FAZtor’s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Thank you again for your support for the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. Looking at the list of parishes that have and have not completed their assess- ment and those that exceeded their goal, it made me proud of our parish. I already received a check of $2,465 as the reimbursement or the surplus of our goal that we have exceeded. We will use this money for the repair of our church doors. This may not be enough but it certainly helps. We welcome our Catholic students, especially our Holy Name school children, this Sunday at the 9:30AM Mass for the opening of Catholic Schools Week, which usually begins the last Sunday in Janu-ary. This year it is January 29th to February 5th. Catholic Schools Week is an annual national celebra-tion of the important role that Catholic elementary and secondary schools across the country play in provid-ing a value-added education for America’s young peo-ple. I can still feel the heartache of the 49ers loss to the NY Giants. I am not here to memorialize that de-feat or to add insult to injury. I just have some reflec-tions on that day, that rainy Sunday. I said to myself, “rain or shine” they play! But is it “rain or shine” we pray? Then I came across another reflection that I would simply entitle: “Isn’t it funny?” Isn't it funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world's going to hell. Isn't it funny how someone can say 'I believe in God' but still follows the ways of the devil (who, by the way, also 'believes' in God). Isn't it funny how you can send a thousand jokes through e-mail and they spread like wildfire, but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing? Isn't it funny how I can be more worried about what other people think of me than what God thinks of me? Why is it so hard to tell the truth but yet so easy to tell a lie? Why are we so sleepy in church but right when the sermon is over, we suddenly wake up? Why is it so easy to delete a Godly e-mail, but yet we forward all of the nasty ones? Yes, God loves us all, but He favors "fruits of the spirit" over "religious nuts!"

“Working for God does not pay much, but His retire-ment plan is out of this world.”

HOLY NAME SCHOOL Celebrates Catholic Schools Week

January 30th-February 3rd The theme for Catholic Schools Week 2012 is: “Catholic Schools: Faith. Academics. Service.” The theme expresses three priorities that make Catholic schools stand apart from other educational institutions. Children are taught faith – not just the basics of Christi-anity, but how to have a relationship with God. Aca-demics, which in Catholic schools are held to very high standards, help each child reach his or her poten-tial. Service, the giving of one’s time and effort to help others, is taught both as an expression of faith and good citizenship. “ It is the responsibility of the entire Catho-lic community—bishops, priests, deacons, religious, and laity—to continue to strive towards the goal of making our Catholic elementary and secondary schools availa-ble, accessible, and affordable to all Catholic parents and their children, including those who are poor and middle class. California’s 569 Catholic elementary and 114 Cath-olic high schools currently have more than 214,000 stu-dents enrolled.

WHOSE AUTHORITY? A man stands on your front doorstep, holding a Bible: “Good afternoon. May I share a few words of Christian truth with you?” “Sure. Where do you get this truth?” “From the Bible, of course.” “That’s your authority? The Bible?”

“Yes, it’s the only authority for Christians.” “Can you prove that from the Bible?” “What do you mean?” “I mean I don’t believe the Bible claims to be the sole rule of faith. Please show me where the Bible claims such a status for itself.” Sometimes the conversation goes more like this: “Good afternoon. May I share a few words of Christian truth with you?” “No, I’m a Catholic.” The door closes. Many door-to-door proselytizers have good intentions. They want to convert you to the “truth”—as they see it. From their perspective, the Bible is the sole authority for the Christian faith. Some are taught that Catholics are prohibited from reading the Bible or know nothing about the scriptures. However, not only do we have full access to the Bible, but we hear segments of it proclaimed every time we celebrate Mass. In today’s first reading God gives Moses the right to speak with divine authority to the people of Israel. In today’s readings Jesus and Moses are recognized as speaking and acting with the authority of God. Both Jesus and Moses acted as a bridge between the people and God. For us the scriptures are a bridge for God’s truth, but so are the sacraments and the lived ex-perience of the Church—what we call Tradition. It is part of our responsibility as disciples of Jesus to learn from the scriptures, to listen attentively at Mass, to read scrip-ture prayerfully for ourselves, and to learn more about the Bible through reading, studying, and learning with others.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Forty days after Christmas, this week’s ancient feast of the Presentation of the Lord is an extension of the shining days of Christ’s coming into the depths of winter. This is the day when, for a thousand years, the Church has blessed a year’s supply of candles. In many places, a procession forms outside the church. The core memory is of Simeon and Anna’s meeting with the infant Jesus and his parents outside the tem-ple on the fortieth day after the child’s birth, and the delight of going to the table of the Lord for the Eucha-rist, a foretaste of our final meeting with Christ. For some Christians, today is known as “The Meeting,” suggesting not only the encounter in the temple, but also our assembly at the Lord’s table and our longing for the kingdom. One story suggests that the commotion made by so many candle-bearing, hymn-singing faithful in the wintry fields of Germany on their joyful way to Mass stirred the badger from hibernation to examine this promise of springtime. The interrupted nap of the groundhog is amazingly linked to the light of Christ driving away the shadows of the world’s darkness. This beautiful feast only rare-ly falls on a Sunday. What better reason could there be for candles at dinner tonight? —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
