Starting this December 8, the Holy Father has called for a Holy Year of Mercy, with the theme, “Merciful like the Father—Misericordes sicut Pater”. God’s mercy is always available to us, whenever we turn away from our sin and back to the Lord. God’s mercy goes in search of us, like the Good Shepherd seeking His lost sheep. God’s mercy changes us, and makes us merciful, like our Heavenly Father is merciful. So, in the next two bulletin letters, I will map out the Church’s plan for mercy. Which of the corporal and spiritual works of mercy is God calling you to in this Year of Mercy?

How are you going to be merciful like the Father?

Corporal Works of Mercy

Feed the hungry: We know from experience how not eating or not eating the right types of food can really affect every other area of our life. There are many ways that we can feed the hungry. We can donate food to HOPE (see the list in the bulletin about what you can bring based on the first letter of your last name). We can cook a meal for someone we know at work or in our neighborhood who might not have family around, or who may seem lonely.

Give drink to the thirsty: In the desert, we know about the need to drink plenty of water. We have drinking fountains everywhere, which is a blessing in our cities. But maybe we could keep a large package of water bottles in our car and hand them to people on the side of the road who are asking for help. This would be especially helpful to them in the summer, so they don’t have to leave their post.

Clothe the naked: We don’t see people very often who have no clothes, but we know that many people do not have good clothes or shoes to wear. Could we give away some of our clothes? Could we give away clothes that we like, and not just the old stuff? I know that donating clothes that people could wear to job interviews is really helpful for someone who is trying to get back on his feet and wants to look nice.

Shelter the homeless: There are many people who are homeless; we pass them everyday on the street. It may be a safety concern to have a stranger in our homes, especially if we have children. We can donate to homeless shelters, especially ones that really respect the dignity of the people who come there. We can also open our homes in hospitality to young people and students who may be in school far from home. Our homes can become a “home away from home” for them.

Visit the sick: We all know people who are sick, in our families and in our parish. Sickness can be a really isolating experience. Anthanette Donaldson, our facilitator of pastoral care, is always looking for people who want to visit the sick in our parish or to bring them Holy Communion. It may not seem much, but it means the world to people who do not get a lot of visitors.

Visit the imprisoned: Prison ministry is incredibly rewarding for those who are involved in it. I’m not going to make any excuse for anyone. If God is calling you to this ministry, go for it! We can also think of the families of those who are imprisoned. Do we know people who have a family member in jail? How can we be there them in their suffering?

Bury the dead: Very often, people who come to our parish for funerals are far from the Church and may not have practiced the faith in years. Could we find time to attend a funeral, to sing loudly, to say “And with your spirit” and the other responses? Even if we never met the person, he or she is our brother or sister in Christ. It is a great way for us to show our belonging to the Body of Christ.

In Christ,

Celebrate the Birth of our Lord by making a year end gift to Christ the King.

Are you considering a year end gift? Where is your heart called to give? We have received the greatest gift of our Lord and know as His disciples that “Wherever your treasure lies, there your heart will be.” Luke 12:32-48 Share a gift from your heart through your tithe, a gift to the St. Peregrine Cancer Shrine Endowment Fund. See the many options available on the Parish website: www.ctk-catholic.org

VOCATION CHALICE The purpose of the Chalice Program is to encourage families to pray and promote vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life. The consecrated Chalice is a tangible reminder of this special intention for the Church. The Second Vatican Council highlights the responsibility of the laity to pray for and support vocations.

A vocation is a call from the Holy Spirit, a gift from God that is nurtured in prayer. When we pray for vocations, we lift up to our Father those men and women whom He is calling to follow Him in a very special way. We hope that those who bring the cup home will continue to pray daily for vocations. The Vocation Chalice is available to be checked out for up to two weeks.

Sign up forms for the Vocation Chalice can be filled out in the Parish Office, or on the Christ the King website: http://ctk-catholic.org/vocation-chalice/

Perpetual Adoration

Pope Francis has declared a Jubilee Year of Mercy beginning December 8th. Pope Francis has declared that the Holy Doors be opened in Cathedrals around the world. In the Diocese of Phoenix you can make a pilgrimage to our own Cathedral, Saint Simon and Jude, which for us is like what Rome is to the Church. It takes time to plan a meaningful pilgrimage so mark your calendars for February 16-19, 2016 when a Eucharistic Congress will be held at our Cathedral to bring together all parishes from the Diocese in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

In addition to the Hours Chart we have posted, you can go to www.cancershrine.org and then to the Adoration Page and click on the monstrance to see where we need help. There is also a link to the registration form that can be printed and submitted to the Parish Office. Call Dick at (602) 300-8562 or Email: [email protected]

Holiday cleaning? Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona in conjunction with the Knights of Columbus

needs your donations throughout the year, but especially this holiday season. Please

consider placing your donations in the freshly updated donation bin located in our south parking lot. Not only do

your donations benefit those in need, but also Christ the King Church as we raise $.10 per pound of all donations from our location. Do Good. Donate!

Into the Breach Young Men’s Conference Bishop Olmsted’s efforts to call men of the Diocese of Phoenix to greatness certainly includes a call to young men! In fact, this is the crucial time for a young man to begin to step Into the Breach. This conference is offered to all young men of the diocese as a day of encouragement, fellowship and fun. Speakers include Fr. John Parks, former NFL Player Chris Horn and others.

Let us Help You with Your Christmas Shopping — Purchase Gift Cards from the CTK Scrip Program!

Did you know that Christ the King sponsors a Scrip Program whereby you can purchase gift cards (the same gift cards sold at stores and restaurants) and earn FREE money for yourself and CTK!

CTK sells gift cards for grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, movie theaters, department stores, online retailers and more! Rebates are generated when you purchase Scrip because CTK buys the gift cards at a discount, and then sells them to you at face value. The difference, or “rebate,” is then split 50/50 with you!

The CTK Scrip Program keeps an on-hand inventory of gift cards for immediate purchase for about 80 of our best-selling retailers. These are our "ScripToGo" cards and can be purchased from the Scrip Cart after mass.

Visit our new website at www.ctkscrip.weebly.com for all the details about the CTK Scrip Program and how you

can earn FREE money just by “Changing How You Shop!”

CATHOLIC EDUCATION ARIZONA

As members of the Christ the King Catholic community, we are keepers of the faith. As residents of the state of Arizona, we are taxpayers.

Jesus said, “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” (Matthew 22:21)

Our taxes belong to AZ but our children belong to God. Redirecting your tax dollars toward a Catholic education does both!

Parents send their children to Catholic schools because they prepare students to know, love and serve God and to become productive citizens. They know our school promotes high academic standards in a safe, disciplined and nurturing environment. There is a cost for Catholic School. But many families receive tuition assistance (even full funding) with the help of Arizona tax credits.

Arizona taxpayers have the option to designate our school to redirect their taxes through returned state tuition organizations like Catholic Education Arizona.

AZ tax credits make sense! In order to fund state tuition programs, we need taxpayers like you to simply get more information. For more information visit www.CatholicEducationArizona.org or call the school office at 480-844-4480. You have been hearing a lot about Catholic Education Arizona, now is the time— just do it!

ENTRANCE ANTIPHON Cf. Is 45: 8 Drop down dew from above, you heavens, and let the clouds rain down the Just One; let the earth be opened and bring forth a Savior.

O COME, DIVINE MESSIAH M. l'abbé (Simon-Joseph) Pellegrin, Translated by Sister Mary of St. Philip Adapted by Jarrod Townsend

O come, divine Messiah! The world in silence waits the day When hope shall sing its triumph, and sadness flee away.

Sweet Savior haste; come, come to earth, Dispel the night and show thy face, and bid us hail the dawn of grace. O come, divine Messiah! The world in silence waits the day When hope shall sing its triumph, and sadness flee away.

You’ll come in peace and meekness, And lowly will your cradle be; All veiled in human weakness thy majesty we’ll see.

O Thou, whom nations sigh for, whom seer and prophet long foretold, Wilt break the captive fetters; redeem the long-lost fold.

HAIL MARY/GENTLE WOMAN Carey Landry © 1975 NALR

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blest is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of death. Amen.

Gentle woman, quiet light, morning star, so strong and bright. Gentle Mother, peaceful dove, teach us wisdom, teach us love.

You were chosen by the Father; you were chosen for the Son. You were chosen from all women and for woman shining one.

Blessed are you among women. Blest in turn all women, too. Blessed they with peaceful spirits. Blessed they with gentle hearts.

O COME, O COME EMMANUEL Traditional

O come, O come Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel, That mourns in lonely exile here, until the Son of God appear.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to Thee, O Israel!

O come, Thou Wisdom, from on high, who ord'rest all things mightily. To us the path of knowledge show, and teach us in her ways to go.

O come, Thou Dayspring from on high, and cheer us by Thy drawing nigh. Disperse the gloomy clouds of night, and death's dark shadow put to flight.

O come, Desire of nations bind in one the hearts of humankind; O bid our sad divisions cease, and be for us our King of Peace.

COMMUNION ANTIPHON Is 7: 14 Behold, a Virgin shall conceive and bear a son; and his name will be called Emmanuel.

HOLY IS HIS NAME John Michael Talbot © 1980 Birdwing/Cherry Lane

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord And my spirit exalts in God my Savior. For He has looked with mercy on my lowliness And my name will be forever exalted. For the mighty God has done great things for me and His mercy will reach from age to age.

And Holy, Holy, Holy, is His name.

He has mercy in ev'ry generation. He has revealed His power and His glory. He has cast down the mighty in their arrogance. And has lifted up the meek and the lowly. He has come to help His servant Israel. He remembers His promise to our Fathers

WAIT FOR THE LORD Jacques Berthier © 1984 GIA

Wait for the Lord, whose day is near Wait for the Lord: be strong, take heart!

CANTICLE OF THE TURNING Composer: Irish Traditional "Star of the County Down" Arr. by Rory Cooney Lyricist: Rory Cooney Based on Luke 1:46-58 © 1990 GIA Publications, Inc My soul cries out with a joyful shout that the God of my heart is great, and my spirit sings of the wondrous things that you bring to the ones who wait. You fixed your sight on your servant's plight, and my weakness you did not spurn, so from east to west shall your name be blessed. Could the world be about to turn.

My heart shall sing of the day you bring. Let the fires of your justice burn. Wipe away all tears, for the dawn draws near, and the world is about to turn. Though I am small, my God, my all, you work great things in me, and your mercy will last from the depths of the past to the end of the age to be. Your very name puts the proud to shame, and to those who would for you yearn, you will show your might, put the strong to flight, for the world is about to turn.

From the halls of pow'r to the fortress tow'r, not a stone will be left on stone. Let the king beware for your justice tears ev'ry tyrant from his throne. The hungry poor shall weep no more, for the food they can never earn: There are tables spread, ev'ry mouth be fed, for the world is about to turn.

Though the nations rage from age to age, we remember who holds us fast: God's mercy must deliver us from the conqueror's crushing grasp. This saving word that our forebears heard is the promise which holds us bound, 'til the spear and rod can be crushed by God, who is turning the world around.
