Pastor’s Poetry Post-It

Spleen

PASTOR’S LETTER

Dear Friends,

I found the poem of T.S. Eliot below in the New York Review of Books —a lesser know one not included in previous collections. It is all about Sundays. I was drawn in by the last line “On the doorstep of the Absolute.“ For us Catholics it is not about the doorstep but about crossing the threshold into the heavenly banquet. We should never cease to be amazed that we have been invited to sit at the King’s table. Never mind Le Cirque, Per Se or Le Bernadine, we sit down every Sunday to feast on the Absolute—the absolute love, mercy and kindness of a God who sits us at His table to consume the Body and Blood of His Son. The writer Andrew Dubus, father of the even more famous Andre Dubus III, wrote a collection of essays a few years ago entitled Meditations from a Moveable Chair. Among his musing are several essays on the Eucharist—from a crusty, salty Cajun in a wheelchair. In one he writes:

“I am one with all people in pain and joy and passion, one with the physical universe, with Christ, with the timeless dimension of the spirit, which has not past or future but only now; one with God. Me: flawed and foolish me. I drove my car to church and consumed God.

Allow yourself the lavish amazement that we do the same every Sunday—some each day.

In the Lord, Fr. Hugh, OP

60 Millions Refugees in the World Today, A sobering Reality.

+ + + + + Monday, February 29th—March 3rd

Parish Retreat Fr. Rathschmidt, O.F.M. Cap.

Sunday: this satisfied procession of definite Sunday faces; Bonnets, silk hats, and conscious graces In repetition that displaces Your mental self-possession By this unwarranted digression. Evening, lights and tea! Children and cats in the alley; Dejection unable to rally Against this dull conspiracy. And Life, a little bald and gray, Lanquid, fastidious, and bland, Waits, hat and gloves in hand, Punctilious of tie and suit (Somewhat impatient of delay) On the doorstep of the Absolute.

T.S. Eliot (1888-1965)

“I was homeless and you welcomed me.” Mt. 25

There are 60 million refugees in the world today.

What perspective might U.S. Christians have regarding This sobering reality?

How can we respond?

Sr. Arlene Flaherty, OP will give a power point presentation/Q&A on this topic Tuesday, February 23rd

Holy Innocents 7:30pm

Sr. Arlene’s work in conflict areas has brought her to Iraq where she documented the effects of sanctions and conflict on Iraqi children. She presented these finding to the United Nations Human Rights Commission in Geneva, Switzerland where she called for an end to the sanctions and war on the basis that the effects of these were in clear violation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Children. She recently returned from Iraq where she and 2 other US Dominican sisters documented the impact of displacement by ISIS on Iraqi refugees. She has also worked in Jordan, Syria and Lebanon documenting the reality of refugees in these countries displaced by war.

LENTEN EVENTS AT HOLY INNOCENTS

12:15pm Mass – Monday- Friday during Lent.

Stations of the Cross

Fridays after the 12:15pm Mass at Holy Innocents and 7pm at Our Lady of Pompeii.

LENT “FAST AND ABSTINENCE”

During the Season of Lent, the Church urges all the Faithful to reflect a spirit in penance in their daily life through performing acts of fast and abstinence. “Fasting” requires that only one full meal be taken per day. Two other smaller meals may be taken during the day to maintain physical strength, but these two meals together should not equal a full meal in quantity. Fasting obliges all those who have reached the age of 18 and continues to oblige until age 59. Those not specifically obliged to fast are encouraged to join in the discipline of fasting to the extent that they are able. “Abstinence” prohibits individuals from eating meat on a particular day. Abstinence obliges all those who have reached the age of 14 and continues to oblige throughout their entire life. Those not obliged to abstain from eating meat are encouraged to join in this discipline to the extent that they are able.

ASH WEDNESDAY and GOOD FRIDAY are days of fast and abstinence.

FRIDAYS in Lent are days of abstinence.

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME February 7, 2016

First Reading: Isaiah 6:1-2a, 3-8 Isaiah recounts the awe he felt the first time he saw the Lord, who was surrounded by angels. He began to feel despair because he was a man of unclean lips, until an angel touched an ember to his lips and pronounced them clean. The Lord asked who he should send forth, to which Isaiah replied, "Here I am, send me!" Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 Paul reminds the Corinthians that Christ died for us to free us from our sins. He encourages them to remember the importance of Jesus' death and resurrection. He admits that he initially failed to believe, and therefore was very grateful to be called an apostle and preach in the name of Christ. Gospel: Luke 5:1-11 Luke tells of Jesus preaching to a crowd, then joining Peter who was about to end a fruitless day of fishing. He told Peter to lower his net back in, and a great number of fish were caught. Upon seeing this, Peter and his companions, James and John, immediately abandoned their nets to follow Jesus.
