Like last week’s story of the Good Samaritan, the image of
Martha and Mary welcoming Jesus to their home is very
well known. How the two sisters respond to Jesus when
he comes to visit gives us all so much to reflect upon
because we can all understand how both Mary and
Martha decide to act. I don’t think that St. Luke included
this episode in his Gospel to challenge us to be more “God-
like” in our daily activities, as was the case last week, but
to invite us to reflect more deeply on our personal attitude
and disposition while doing the “right” thing.
Of the two sisters, culturally speaking, Martha was the
one doing not only what was expected but going the extra
mile as well. In Jesus’ time and place, hospitality to guests
and strangers was perhaps the most valued activity
anyone should engage. We see hospitality exercised with
vigor and enthusiasm in our first reading with Abraham
and Sarah going to extremes to welcome the three
unknown travelers. Martha was equally busied with the
work of traditional hospitality when Jesus came to her
home. One could argue that poor Martha had to work
harder than most because her sister Mary was of zero help
to her. I can easily relate to Martha’s frustration as she
went to Jesus, asking him to chastise her sister for leaving
her all alone with the chore of welcoming. Mary was fully
aware of the importance of hospitality within her culture
and knew full well her responsibility. Martha had a point,
but Mary wasn’t in the wrong either.
Jesus is always calling people to a deeper understanding
and complete relationship with God throughout the
Gospels. All of the healings and miracles serve the highest
good; full and everlasting communion with God the
Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Mary must
have been blessed that day when Jesus came to her home
because she somehow became aware of a more profound
way of expressing hospitality. She was able to give her
whole being- her very essence- to the Lord. In Jesus’
presence, Mary allowed herself to be nourished by the
living word he spoke. She didn’t forget nor abandon her
responsibility to formal hospitality as dictated by her
tradition- she knew that well- but she didn’t allow that
duty to keep her from Jesus.

Both sisters are Saints. Each has its best moments in
scripture. Today, in Luke’s gospel, Mary teaches us the
importance of showing inner hospitality to Jesus in our
lives. John’s gospel will remind us of the incredible faith
and strength of Martha when her brother Lazarus dies and
poor Mary couldn’t even come out of the house to
welcome Jesus. There is a little bit of Martha and a little
bit of Mary in each of us. Mary wasn’t better than Martha
any more than Martha was better than Mary at the death
of their brother. We will all be faced with opportunities
that will demand that we beyond what is typically
expected of us. Let us pray that we may discover the way
we can best be ourselves in the presence of our Lord.
Peace.
Fr Peter

Paz.
P. Pedro
