MISSION STATEMENT Holy Family Catholic Church is a spiritually and socially active parish. Rooted in the Word of God and nourished by the Eucharist, we cele-brate the life of our Lord Jesus Christ by proclaiming the Good News and providing spiritual growth, support and service with love. Founded by Italian immigrants a century ago, today our parish continues the tradition of extending a loving, caring and affirming welcome to all who join us as we Continue Our Journey of Faith.

Easter Sunday C-2019 April 21 My brothers and sisters in the Lord!

This is the day the Lord has made…Let us be glad and rejoice! Alleluia…Alleluia!!! As we enter into this day, how would you react if you were one of the women arriving at the tomb on Easter Sunday morning, prepared to complete the ritual anointing of Jesus’ body, but instead found the tomb empty? Would you immediately conclude that Jesus had risen from the dead? Would you automatically race back into Jerusalem, bursting with joy and longing to break the news to the apostles? The chances are far more likely that you would be shocked, probably distraught, and would not know what to think or do. Although you knew Jesus personally, it would not occur to you to think

that His broken body could come back to life. Resurrection would be totally outside your experience or expectations. On Easter Sunday morning, the women found an empty tomb. They were confused and scared. They asked themselves what had happened. How could a dead body move? Amidst the horror of the crucifixion, they had forgotten Jesus’ promise of the resurrection. Suddenly, the darkness disappeared and two figures dressed in brilliant clothing, stood before them. To the terrified women’s amazement, the angels told them that Jesus had risen. They did not know what to say or think or do. How could it be that Jesus was alive? They had seen His body. They had come to anoint Him. It took time for the angels’ message to sink in. Jesus had surely risen from the dead! He was alive! The good news had to be passed on immediately to the apostles and so the women became the first missionaries of the resurrection. Somehow, we imagine that Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and those with them instantaneously believed the angels and ran excitedly to apostles to share this incredible news. Yet that would not have been normal behavior. Their uncertainty did not mean that they rejected the angel’s message, only that they did not understand it. In our own lives the impact of good news often takes a while to sink in before we burst out in joyful eagerness to share it with others. The splendor and glory of the resurrection dawned on the followers of Jesus in easy stages. May we experience, like them, the sheer joy of the Risen Christ. Fr. Mauro, Fr. Francesco, our entire staff and I, wish you a Joyous and Blessed Easter Season…Buona Pasqua…Maligayang Pasko ng Pagkabuhay! Peace, Fr. Joe

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Over the centuries, the Church has demonstrated a wonderful ability to adopt a culture’s favorite symbols and customs and assign them new meaning. Easter eggs have a

very ancient pedigree: nature’s perfect package, emblem of new life, dyed and decorated and given as gifts in ancient Egypt, Rome, China, and Persia. Just as the long hard winter is over, the egg bursts with promise of life and nourishment. Long ago, Christians came to see the egg not as a symbol of spring’s rebirth, but of ours, and as a sign of Christ’s tomb. A Polish legend says that Mary, in compassion for the soldiers at the cross, gave them eggs, but that her tears stained their shells with brilliant color. Legends have their origin in tales told around a hearth, but they often contain a profound truth. The idea of Mary, the first Christian, engaged in a merciful act of forgiveness and tenderness even in the shadow of the cross, describes the age old wish that Christ “Easter in us.”

Happy Easter! Or as most other languages prefer: Blessed Pasch—Passover! Pasqua, Pascua, Páscoa, Pâques! Israel’s Passover through the Red Sea to the Promised Land! Jesus’ Passover through the Cross to resurrection! Our catechumens’ Passover

last night, and ours once upon a time, through Baptism’s waters to our family’s Eucharist! Welcome, everybody! As someone once said of the Catholic Church, “Here comes everybody!” So in this Jubilee of Mercy, we make our own Saint John Chrysostom’s Easter welcome from fourteen hundred years ago: “Let everyone enjoy this radiant feast! You who fasted from Lent’s beginning, and you who didn’t fast at all, rejoice! The table’s richly set! Come, take from it, everybody, no worries, no embarrassment! All of you, taste the banquet of faith! Enjoy the feast of forgiveness! Let no one grieve for having sinned again and again: pardon has risen from the tomb!” Happy Easter! Blessed Pasch! Welcome, everybody!

Notes from the Social Concerns Committee... 1. You can help our Holy Family Food Pantry anytime by having a "mini" food drive among family/friends. We don't recommend going to people you don't know, especially if younger people are involved, but just a jar of peanut butter or box of cereal, or can of soup is appreciated. (And we feed people all year long, not just during Lent!)

2. Holy Family Social Concerns is joining St. Mary's Social Concerns in sponsoring an Earth Day event at the Nutley ShopRite on Tuesday, April 23, 2019. Volunteers will be handing out free reusable bags to shoppers from 10:00 - 1:00 and 5:00 - 8:00. We are looking for volunteers for a one-hour stint. If you are interested, contact Bruce Segall

at [email protected] re: The Earth Day Project, and tell him what time you can do it. (If you are looking for a service project for Confirmation or school, this is a great volunteer opportunity!)

We are proud of our committee and all the work we are able to accomplish. • January is “Respect Life” month and we work alongside the Knights of Columbus with a bus trip to Washington to “Walk for

Life” • February we present bags of goodies to veterans in hospitals and homes in our area. We work with the Rosary Society praying a

rosary for each and every veteran! • For Easter, we give gift bags to the youngster’s in the Clara Maas children’s ward. • In May, we host a “Baby Shower” for mothers who have chosen life for their babies. Once again, we work alongside the K of C

who host the Baby Bottle Boomerang project. • Twice a year we host a Soap Drive for the Missionary Sisters of Charity’s shelter in Newark. • We host a Parish Food Pantry and every Saturday we provide groceries to many families in our area, referred to us by the

Nutley Family Service Bureau. We also provide food baskets, donated from several community organizations, during November for Thanksgiving.

• At Christmas, we celebrate with a “Parish Giving Tree.” We provide gifts for children in need, the elderly, special young adults and many local families.

We love having new members and always welcome newcomers. Call Cheryl Malone, Chairperson: 973-667-8957 if you have questions.

Parishioners currently utilizing WeShare electronic giving must discontinue using that company and enroll with ParishGiving.

This is mandatory. We have tried to make the transition as seamless as possible. First, go to our website (www.holyfamilynutley.org) and click on the link to ParishGiving. You can then establish your account and set up your annual donations in a matter of minutes. Then sign into your account on WeShare and print out all your year-to-date donations for 2018 tax filing purposes as ParishGiving can only provide a statement for donations made through them. At that point, call WeShare at 800-950-9952 and tell them to cancel your donations going forward and e-mail a confirmation of the cancellation to you. And that’s it - - you’re good to go! For those new to the service, simply click on the link on the website and establish your account. It’s that easy.
