  • THE ROSARY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARYPOPE SAINT JOHN PAUL II on the occasion of the 24th Anniversary of his election as Supreme Pontiff just seventeen years ago issued an Apostolic Letter entitled THE ROSARY OF THE VIRGIN MARY. The entire letter is a deep meditation of the Rosary, and encourages all to pray the Rosary as a contemplation of the Face of Christ. In the letter, the Holy Father made some significant changes: 1. The Holy Father added FIVE

NEW MYSTERIES to the Rosary, to encourage us to meditate more deeply on the Gospels and the Face of Christ.

    2. He has called these mysteries the MYSTERIES OF LIGHT, or the LUMINOUS MYSTERIES. They are intended to fill in the gap between the Incarnation and the Death and Resurrection of Jesus - they are the time of His Public Ministry.

The FIVE LUMINOUS MYSTERIES ARE: 1. The Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan 2. The Wedding at Cana 3. Proclamation of the Kingdom and Call to

Conversion 4. The Transfiguration 5. The Institution of the Eucharist

    3. To assist us in our daily recitation of the Rosary, the Holy Father suggested a change in the daily system:

Mondays the Joyful Mysteries Tuesdays the Sorrowful Mysteries Wednesdays the Glorious Mysteries Thursdays the Luminous Mysteries Friday the Sorrowful Mysteries Saturdays the Joyful Mysteries Sundays the Glorious Mysteries In Pompei in Italy, there is a beautiful shrine dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. This Shrine was built at the encouragement of Blessed Bartolo Longo, whom, in his letter, the Pope calls the "Apostle of the Rosary". The Pope visited the Shrine in 2003 at the closing of the Year of the Rosary. The Pope's letter concludes with a quote from Blessed Bartolo: ``O Blessed Rosary of Mary, sweet chain which unites us to God, bond of love which unites us to the angels, tower of salvation against the assaults of hell, safe port in our universal shipwreck, we will never abandon you. You will be our comfort in the hour of death: yours our final kiss as life ebbs away. And the last words from our lips will be your sweet name, O Queen of the Rosary of Pompei, O dearest Mother, O Refuge of Sinners, O Sovereign Consoler of the Afflicted. May you be everywhere blessed, today and always, on earth and in heaven.'' !
