how much effort and
commitment some pupils
have put into their books
and we look forward to
celebrating some these at
Speech Day this year.
It was a pleasure to
welcome the Year 3 parents
to a drinks evening on
Tuesday to meet their
children's new tutors and
senior staff in the Prep
school and I look forward
to welcoming Years 6 and 7
parents to the Holmwood

Headmaster
Dear Parents,
The Year 8s have been
completing their
Holmwood House
Certificate assessments this
week. With all of that
behind them, they headed
off to Thorpe Park today
for a day of fun and
frolics! With Saturday
morning off to recover,
they embark upon the
Holmwood House
Challenge Week on
Monday in which they will
be given various challenges
to complete during the
week in their Element
teams. These include a
bushcrafting day, a day at
Mersea Essex Outdoors, a
bridge building task which
results in their creations
being tested to destruction
in an assembly, a £50
challenge to raise as much
money for their Element's
charity at the annual
Summer fete, a quiz and an
ongoing teamwork
challenge. We look for-
ward to seeing which
Element will be presented
with the Hills Challenge
Cup this year. Good Luck!
Members of the S8 class
also presented some of their
Learning Logs to their
parents and senior staff on
Tuesday. It was great to
hear them talk so clearly
and confidently about the
learning process which has
taken place throughout their
course. The range of
subjects covered was
impressive and they all did
very well.
This was followed by our
BBC-style Question Time
Election Special in which I,
a la David Dimbleby,
presented questions to our
panel of political pundits
(S8) as well as answering
questions form the 'studio
audience'. They all did
really well and some really
rose to the challenge.
Year 7s have also had
assessments this week
which go towards their
Holmwood House Certifi-
cate.
We have been reviewing
some examples of pupil
Laetatums this week. It has
been a real pleasure to see

Horse riding
Congratulations to our Holmwood girls in
their riding competition. Their team came
2nd in both classes, one 70cm and Class 2
80/85cm (the top two schools qualify for the
Championship in
October). They were up against Colchester
county High, Chelmer Valley High, New
Hall, Orwell Park, Manningtree and two
teams from Brentwood school. Most other
schools had four in the team (top three
rounds count) so our girls did incredibly
well to qualify.

YEAR 2 VE DAY CELEBR ATIONS. . .
What a super day Year 2 had just before half term! To finish their history topic on World War 2 they celebrated the end of the
war in true VE Day style. Dressed as evacuees, they made gas mask boxes and baked carrot biscuits from a wartime rationing
recipe. Then they were delighted to welcome some grandparents who told them about their experiences growing up in the war.
Mr Came also came in to talk about Theo’s great grandfather and great uncles and their important wartime roles. The afternoon
finished with a jolly tea party accompanied with the children singing wartime songs.
“I liked baking the carrot biscuits. They were nice and crunchy.”
- Skye
“We liked learning how to make bunting best.”
- Lucy and Autumn
“I enjoyed listening to the grandparents. It was very
Interesting.” - Charlie
“I really enjoyed stitching the teddies.” - Daniel M

THE HOLMWOOD HOUSE G ENERAL ELECTION 2017 . . .
The Prep School returned from the half-term break to election madness. All Prep School children had learned about the election,
party politics and policies in PSHCE Citizenship lessons before half-term with Year 7s and 8s also learning about left and right
wing ideology and different voting systems. Bring on election week!
Year 8s, Sam B, Matthew B, Tamunodukoye E, Olivia F, Matthew J, Zeke L, Ben N, Thomas P and Robert W shaped five fake
party identities, masking the five main political parties, between which the Prep School were to choose on Polling Day. They
were keen for the children to focus on ideas and policies rather than voting according to preconceived ideas or parental views.
Years 2 and 3 were also given the opportunity to vote following a presentation about the election to Pre-Prep on Wednesday.
On Tuesday these Year 8s took the role of political pundits in our very own Question Time Election Special, in which Mr
Mitchell relished the chance to be David Dimbleby! The Prep School found the performance inspiring and demonstrated this
with a 93% turn out to vote on Thursday 8 June, along with 23 staff.
Year 4 helped to set up the polling station and Year 5s acted as election officials.

BOARDING AT HOLMWOOD.. .
Page 7 Friday 9 June 2017, Summer Term, Week 6
On Wednesday evening the Year 8 Boarders took a well-earned break for exams and went to the beach at Walton on the Naze
for the evening. They had a fantastic time, flying kites, rock pooling and generally spending time together. They enjoyed seeing
who could spot the most and largest crabs and looking for fossils along the beach.
YEAR 6 LATIN. . .
Page 8 Friday 9 June 2017, Summer Term, Week 6
During our Latin lessons this week, Year 6 have been exploring Roman artefacts and archaeology. Each pair was given an
artefact and were asked to investigate it. They had some quite challenging questions and some innovative ideas.
BUSHCRAFT.. .

because we actually got to sleep
outside! It was great fun with all
