The Bulletin January 2010 Volume 6 Issue 5 HOLLAND CENTRAL SCHOOL www.holland.wnyric.org Dear Holland Community: I would like to thank you for your continuous support to the school district and the children of this community. You prove everyday how much you value children and their education. The district has been requested by the Erie County Health Department to host a H1N1 clinic on January 9, 2010. The clinic will be held at the Holland Middle School on Route 16. Parents who have signed and returned the survey requesting an inoculation for their children need to follow this schedule. Last Names from : A-L 8:00 a.m.— 9:30 a.m. M-P 9:30 a.m.—11:00 a.m. Q-Z 11:00 a.m.—12:30.p.m. Community Members All Ages: From 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Erie County Health Department has opened up the flu shot clinic to all residents so that now are all eligible for H1N1 inoculation. The New York State Governor and legislators have made this school year a very difficult one financially. As of this writing the Governor has announced a reduction in the December State Aid payments to schools, a reduction in the Star aid that schools receive, totaling about a quarter million dollars. The Stimulus funds for 2010-11 have been used to offset the $4.1 billion dollar deficit this year. In light of these possibilities, the district has made financial adjustments, slowing or freezing purchasing, staff conferences, and using the district fund balance to offset this possible loss in state funding. New York State Education department has changed the date of the School Annual Election and Budget vote from Tuesday, May 18, 2010 to Tuesday, May 11, 2010. Erie County will require all schools to use the new voting machines, which will require a new format and location inside the high school auditorium to provide the voters a secure area to record their votes and then scan the sheets. Ms. Linda Poplewski, District Clerk, will be updating the Budget calendar and publicize the changes to the voting location in January and February so that all residents are informed of these changes. Candidates for the Board Education will have to turn in their petitions on Monday, April 12, 2010, 30 days prior to the Budget and election vote. Any questions, please contact the District Clerk, Linda Poplewski at 537-8202. After my five months in the district, I offer a report of some of the accomplishments made during this time by the Board of Education, the Interim Superintendent, the Administration, Teachers, and Support Staff. These items are listed on page 2. As the Christmas and New Year Holidays quickly approach, I offer my personal wishes to all for a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year for 2010. Hope to see you next year. Sincerely, David F. Kurzawa

Parents, Families & Community Members of H.O. Brumsted Elementary,

Can you believe it is already December? With win-ter and the flu season already hitting Western New York, it is very important to know we have and will continue to work at keeping all of our students and staff healthy. We continue to reinforce hand washing and have installed new hand sanitizers in high traffic areas that do not have access to sinks. On the follow-ing page, you will find our “Fever Policy”; previously sent home. I would ask that you continue to adhere to the policy in order to assist us in combating the flu. Information regarding H1N1 vaccines from Erie County via the school district was mailed to all fami-lies. P lease read it carefully and follow all advised recommendations.

With report cards going home on December 15th, I encourage you to take this time to review your child’s progress to date. Remember, this is a snapshot of the entire school year. If you have any questions or con-cerns, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.

Students will be off from school December 24th through January 3rd, returning on January 4th, 2010.

As always, parental involvement in and out of the classroom is encouraged! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me or stop into say hello. My door is always open.

Finally, if I don’t see you before Winter Recess, please have a safe and enjoyable Holiday Season and Happy New Year with your family and friends.

Don’t forget to enter our school in the “Weather Word of the Day” Contest. Simply visit the Elemen-tary School Website and click on “Weather Word of the Day”. The “Weather Word” is posted here daily and we have provided a link to the C hannel 2 website.

Page 7 MIDDLE SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD For the 15th year, students at Holland Middle School, under the direction of Mrs. Newell and Student Government, participated in Operation Christmas Child. Sponsored by Samaritan's Purse, an international hu-manitarian organization headed by Franklin Graham and based in North Carolina, this project's goal is to provide a gift-filled shoebox for children around the world. Last year, Operation Christmas Child delivered more than 8 million shoeboxes to children in the United States and in coun-tries throughout the world, who are suffering from the effects of war, natural disasters, and poverty. Each homeroom was asked to fill a shoebox for either a boy or girl of a certain age category with items such as toys, school supplies,

hygiene items, candy, flashlights, and small articles of clothing such as socks and hats. These boxes were then gift wrapped, collected, and taken to an area church. From there, the shoe-boxes were shipped to North Carolina before being distributed to the children.

This year, Holland Middle School students created 53 shoeboxes! These shoe-boxes will not only bring Christmas joy to children throughout the world but also helped our students learn a valuable lesson in giving.

7th grade Mexican Christmas Fiestas

Mrs. Herráez’s 7th grade Spanish classes were busy before the holidays making piñatas for their annual Mexican Christmas celebration. These paper maché creations were beautifully crafted and decorated with an assortment of colored tissue paper and other interesting accessories. This year’s 7th graders’ imaginations soared to their highest levels ever! These in-cluded a phoenix, a dolphin, a dragon, Garfield, Mickey Mouse, Woodstock, bumble bees, birds, fish, pigs, maracas, Christmas ornaments and several monsters. Many of the piñatas were displayed in the lobby and enjoyed by students, parents and guests. Others were filled with candy and broken during the “fiestas” held in class. This annual tradition once again proved to be a colorful and culturally-meaningful experience for all.

Page 8 MIDDLE SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS FRENCH STUDENTS FLIP CRÊPES AT THE SAVVY GOURMET!

On November 13th, Mrs. Miller’s seventh grade French students visited the Savvy Gourmet in Buffalo for a cooking demonstration and lunch. Chef Jacqueline Frost first demonstrated how to make a traditional French balsamic vinaigrette for their salads. Then she moved on to create a delicious “Beurre Blanc” which was a rich but-ter sauce used as a topping for the crêpes. The highlight of the event was being called up to flip crêpes! Stu-

dents skillfully mastered the art of flipping crêpes very quickly! Dessert crêpes were also served with Intelligentsia French Pressed (coffee), and Orangina to drink.

MIDDLE SCHOOL TALENT REVUE 2010 TRY-OUTS Try-outs for Talent Revue 2010 will take place on Wednesday, January 6. Students in grades 5 to 8 are invited to participate in this annual event. This is a wonderful opportunity for our Middle School students to experience first-hand what it takes to put on a show such as this. The discipline, practice and cooperation

needed to successfully perform in front of one’s peers, family and the community are skills and abilities that are valuable throughout a lifetime. This year’s show is on Friday, March 5 in the Middle School auditorium and we hope it will be the best yet! Mrs. Herráez looks forward to working with our talented Middle School students in preparation for this exciting night!

Page 9 HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE ▪ At the High School we have implemented a Peer Tutoring Center after school in the high school library. The Center is open to all students in Grades 3-12 to re-ceive extra help with their academics. High School students involved in our Peer Tutoring course and students involved in the National Honor Society have been trained and are providing the tutoring services. Debbie Tatar is the Program Su-pervisor, Elizabeth Langford is the Middle School Supervisor, and Mary Balling is the Elementary Supervisor. If you are interested in having your child participate in this program, please contact one of the previously named supervisors or the high school guidance office at 537-8215. ▪ District wide we are organizing the ESchool Parent Portal. The Parent Portal pro-vides you with 24/7 access to your child’s academic information. With a parent portal account, you may log on at any time to view information regarding your child’s schedule, grades and attendance. Our goal is to have the Portal up and running by second semester. You will be receiving an informational flyer with in-structions on setting up your account. At the high school, we will mail the flyer with interim reports on December 23rd. ▪ The end of the first semester is near. Please encourage your students to stay focused on their academics. The third quarter, fourth quarter, and final exam con-sist of 60% of the final average grade, so please do not give up. There are plenty of opportunities for extra help; including After School Academic Program, Extra-Curricular Intervention Program, Peer Tutoring Program, as well as Academic Inter-vention Services through the Academic Center, Math Labs and English Labs. Please take advantage of these programs; they are designed to help your child achieve success in school. Happy New Year!

A message from Holland Schools SRO Trooper Jeff De-Pasquale……………………. The students, staff and community of Holland should be com-mended for their efforts in a recent charitable fund-raiser to bene-fit athletes that participate in the Special Olympics in New York State. On Sunday, December 6th at 12 noon, 29 brave souls, consisting of students and staff -clad only in swim suits and a towel - braved the freezing, wind whipped air and frigged waters of Lake Erie and participated in the 3rd annual WNY Polar Plunge. The event was held at Hamburg Beach and was attended by approximately 800 “plungers” from around the area. The Holland Central Schools team won the “Largest High School Team” award and raised nearly $1,800 for this great cause. Holland’s participation was done with short notice, so the fact that Holland Schools won this award and raised that amount of money speaks volumes about the Holland community and the generosity of the staff, students and resi-dents of Holland.
