I think if we asked a thousand families whether they have areas of wall space dedicated to family photos, in all shapes and sizes, representing their family members past and present, there would be at least 950 that say they do…… and perhaps the other 50 are undergoing renovations and so they’ve taken them down – for the time being!

As I was recently arranging my own family wall, I got to thinking about the walls of our school and I have to admit, apart from a few pockets here and there, they are quite bare and/or outdated! Couple this with some very interesting information I have been receiving from many students who wish to take time out of the College to follow a passion of theirs, it became obvious that we can learn a lot more about each other through simple text and photographs.

The Faith Family Album initiative aims to promote the activities of our students – the kinds of activities that the College would not necessarily get to hear about. These include hobbies and passions that many of us are invested in and that can lead us to some impressive levels of achievement.

Some examples that have come to light recently are:

• Competitor in Junior National Gridiron events interstate

• Scholarship to study Marine Biology at the University of Tasmania

• Competitor in the SA Athletics Championships in Sydney

• Netball player in the state league squad

• Acceptance into the School of American Ballet (New York)

The Faith Family Album aims to recognise these achievements through the display of photographs of our students in action around the College.

So, as a member of our Community; whether you are that student, or a family member of a student that follows a particular passion which has led to the kinds of achievements listed here, I would love to hear from you. Please email me directly at: [email protected].

Exams for Year 10 and 11 are coming up at the end of this term. Please refer to the Exam Timetables below for dates and times for these exams. These Timetables have already been emailed to the students.

Closer to the date of the Exams there will be a Permission Slip sent home for parents to sign to enable your child to either arrive later in the day if they do not have the first exam or to leave early if they have no more exams for the rest of that day. There will be a supervised room available for quiet study if students do not leave the College.

The Wellbeing Leaders will be running some sessions in preparation for these exams to help the students be better organised and more confident in their approach. Good luck to everyone for the Mid-year Exams.

Year 8 & 9 Verbal CombatOn Monday the 29th May, the Year 8 & 9 students watched a performance by Brainstorm Productions called ‘Verbal Combat.’

Words are powerful, words can hurt and cyber bullying is devastating. ‘Verbal Combat’ followed three friends who learnt that their online words can last forever. The desire to fit in and be liked is strong and when one friend starts to post witty, but mean, rumours to get more online likes, the play takes a cruel twist. All too soon, the posts are wreaking havoc in all their lives and the characters quickly discover that there is no easy way out. Verbal Combat is essential learning that addressed the dire consequences of cyber bullying and highlighted to students that their digital footprints are hard to erase and so are their mistakes.

This performance allowed students an opportunity to connect emotionally to a storyline, which was not only entertaining, but also had a powerful message woven throughout it. At the conclusion of the performance, Brooke and Jack (the Actors) debriefed with the students and allowed questions to be asked. If you have a student in Year 8 or 9 ask them their thoughts on the performance!

Exchange Student Update

Exchanges program at Faith. The first part of the year has seen some activity with student exchanges at Faith. Katherina Gummert arrived in Term 1 from Albert-Schweitzer gymnasium, Germany and this term Faith Year 10 student, Lucy Anderson is getting hosted with Katherina and her family whilst attending school.

This term we have Brianna Daniel (see picture) from Luhi, our sister school in New York. Brianna is currently staying with the Cameron family and Rhea will head to the United States later in the year and attend Luhi. French student, Mathilde Meillassoux (see picture) is part of the Southern Cross Exchange program and is attending Faith for the rest of the term. She is hosted by the Denherders.

Terms 3 & 4 become particularly active with the exchange program. We have 4 students visiting our sister schools in Germany, 1 student visiting Japan and 1 student will be heading to the United States. We will also be hosting 3 students from Germany, 1 from Finland and 1 from France.

Shortly all Year 9 students will hear information about the exchange program and the possibilities they can investigate if they are interested in participating in an exchange. Going on an exchange is an exciting opportunity for students to develop an understanding of another culture, practice their language skills and make new friends.

If your son / daughter shows interest in an exchange program or if would like to know more about what Faith has to offer please don’t hesitate to contact me via phone 85614200 or email [email protected]

Year 8-9 Boys Football ResultTuesday 23 May Balaklava Match ReportThe boys were far too strong for the Balaklava team and worked hard over all four quarters to dominate the game.

It was fantastic to see the year 8 boys contribute significantly to the success of the team given our lower numbers this year. We look forward to the next round to be played against Clare High and the winner of Nuriootpa and Glossop High.

Final Placings:The Girls team finished 7th and the Boys team finished 7th (from 9 schools).

This would normally mean a combined placing of 7th, however, due to some extraordinary results from one of the other schools Faith’s final combined placing was 8th.

With SSSSA’s promotion/relegation system this means that next year the team will compete in the B1 division.

Although the team was a little disappointed with the final placing, it does not diminish the many outstanding individual performances and the fact that we are all very proud of there efforts.

It also gives a great incentive for students to join the quest for promotion in 2018!

Well done to all the students involved for their effort and commitment to being involved in the team.

Particular thanks must go to a number of students who put their hand up to fill in events due to injuries and illness of other students.

Thank you to the 3 students who volunteered to assist with Faith’s formal officiating duties on the day:

Track Recorders – Rachael Matthews, Tilly Hadden, Holly Cook.

Thank you to all the parents and caregivers that travelled to support the team. Your support is much appreciated.

A big thank you also goes to the PE staff for their hard work in organising the team and officiating on the day.

Vetamorphus Retreat

One of the components of Veta Morphus is attending multiple retreats throughout the year. The second retreat took us down to the CBD where we dedicated a weekend to learning about serving others.

The main highlight for us as a group was Saturday morning. We visited the City Salvos where we learned about the very important work they do for their city, offering people a wide variety of services. We decided that we wanted to help out with the incredible work that the Salvos do, specifically their ‘Do unto others’ program. Every Saturday and Wednesday night the City Salvos welcomes approximately 200 people for a dinner, a selection of free groceries and Karaoke.

We went to Rundle Mall and bought 20 bags of pasta, 10kg of mince and 7 blankets. We then cooked up a bolognaise sauce which the Salvos would have served at ‘Do unto others’ on Wednesday night. We also set up the small grocery store with many fresh vegetables and other foods for people to take home.

Overall the experience was very rewarding and our eyes have been opened to the importance of serving at places like the City Salvos.

Students Ethan Hewitt Year 12, and Declan Malone Year 10 recently represented South Australia for this national tournament held at Runaway Bay Sports Super Centre in Queensland.

Facing tough competition the South Australian side was thrilled to notch up a win against the All Stars (ACT & TAS).

‘As a team we outperformed our expectations. … we also showed that we can stand up against these bigger league teams who have a much larger pool of players to choose from’. Ethan explained.

‘This experience was amazing and I made so many friends which I will have forever. It was amazing to be able to take a sport which I only started a few years ago when I was on an exchange program in America and be able to represent my state. It was also fantastic to compare the competition from both experiences’.

Both players were selected from their clubs to participate in the state training squad. From there they were chosen for the starting team.

‘It was a great experience and anyone what wants to try gridiron should contact me’. Declan Malone.

Congratulations Ethan and Declan.

University visits to the Year 12’s So far this year, the Year 12’s have had presentations from the University of Adelaide and Flinders University. These presentations are an important part of schooling as they enable students to explore pathways beyond school.

The presenters explain the courses on offer, alternative courses, transferring from one course to another, the dual pathways with TAFE, travelling overseas as part of your degree, students services, scholarships, accommodation and the many clubs they have on offer.

At the end of each presentation, the presenter offers students a one on one opportunity to ask questions or small group discussions. They also bring all of their brochures for each faculty and services provided by the universities. These brochures are also available in the Future Pathways office. Students appreciated the opportunity to ask individual questions and seek further clarification on courses and pathways.

We would like to thank Eli and May from Adelaide University and Sarah from Flinders University for their informative and valuable presentations.

Cassie and I engaged with the children as we made our puppet play with some funny looking characters, which the children loved. We also had a memory match game

(or Gedächtnisabgleich in German) where you had to match the picture of the character with its name. The kids loved this activity and enjoyed the play character “Hairy the Fairy.” Cassie and I were extremely pleased with how the children interacted with us and we are so glad they enjoyed it!

Emma Ames, Year 8 German student.

On Wednesday the 24th May, we visited Reception to Year 2 students that attend Tanunda Lutheran School. Each group

performed their puppet play to a variety of students in many different ways. Some of us showed a video but some of us did the plays live. Overall the children enjoyed the performance. I wish we could have stayed for longer to perform to the students!

Year 8 German Class visits Tanunda Lutheran SchoolExcitement and laughter filled the air on Wednesday 24th May as the Reception to Year 2 students from Tanunda Lutheran School were treated to an afternoon of entertainment in German. Our Year 8 students delivered creative and innovative performances through multimedia, live puppetry and card games to practice their German skills. A visit was also made to Good Shepherd Lutheran on Thursday 25th May.

CSI at Faith CampusLast Wednesday we welcomed over one hundred Year 6 and 7 students from Redeemer Lutheran School to familiarise themselves with a High School environment. The theme of the day was CSI not crime scene investigation…. but College Scene Investigation. Students were given an insight into College life by participating in two lessons of their choice, a tour of the College ‘with a difference’ and a BBQ lunch cooked by the College leaders. It was wonderful to see our current students interacting with our visitors during recess and lunch breaks and seeing the students’ eyes light up as they investigated the range of College facilities.
