E.O.E.

Notes from the EditorThe sun is shining and the sky is blue - let’s hope this weather keepsup for the holidays and harvestime.

We were really lucky and the rain held off until we were packing awaythe last of the tables and chairs for the fete. Many thanks to everyonewho supported us this year - through lending a hand, manning a stall, making donations and turning up on the day. I hope all the villageclubs managed to make a good few £s for their funds.

Many thanks to Lisa and Mark for letting us use the White Horse as thevenue again. The fete drew a large crowd of all ages; our regularsupporters and many new faces. The children were entertained by thePunch & Judy show and the bowls competition and Bale Race werepopular once more. This year Ben Newton was the victor in the dashfrom the Village Hall to Pub.

One of the draw prizes only had the winner’s name written on the backand no contact details. The prize was won by Ann Rose - please get intouch with Rita on 638208 if this is your prize or you know the winner.

Best wishes and Good Health, Tish

FUNDRAISING FORCANCER RESEARCH UK

In September, I will be trying toaccomplish the Spartan Trifecta toraise money for Cancer Research. The Trifecta is a series of 3 obstacle races of varying length.

The first is called the Sprint at 3 – 4 miles with 15+ obstacles, thesecond the Super at 8 – 10 miles with 20+ obstacles and the final onethe Beast being 12 – 15 miles with 25+ obstacles.

You can find more information about the races and see videos on eitherYouTube or the Spartan race website: www.spartanraceuk.uk

Search YouTube for ‘Spartan Race Cambridge Video 2014’ to see thevideo of last year’s race.

I decided to do this last year when we lost my brother-in-law John verysuddenly to cancer, aged 35. This year I have lost another colleague tothis hideous disease. If I can raise some funds to help put a stop toanother family going through what I have seen my family go throughthis last year, all the training and I imagine the pain to come, wouldhave been worth it.

I have set up a Just Giving page:www.justgiving.com/Graham-Foster2015Trifecta

If you could spare a little for this extremely worthy cause, I wouldappreciate the support. Thank you, Graham Foster

A1120: WOOD ROAD - RECTORY ROAD CROSSROADS

Please do not put advertising boards on the crossroads as this blocks all visibility– very dangerous with traffic coming both ways.

There have been some near accidents and one person killed on this crossroads.

DOG WALKERS - MILL ROAD AREA BEWARE

I have received complaints about DOG FOULING in MILL ROAD, both on theroad and on people’s property - people who want to enjoy living in Badinghamwithout getting dog mess on their shoes etc etc.  The Countryside Code statesTAKE YOUR LITTER OR MESS HOME and don’t discard it in the hedge! It is anOFFENCE under Canine bylaws for a DOG OWNER to allow their dogs to foulin public places. You can get fined £1,000 for this and even court. I urge anyonewho sees this happening, or knows whose dogs they are, to get in touch with meor the Police 101. This does not apply to cats!

Lambros Fish & Kebab HouseDhekelia, Cyprus

I have been to many interesting (and not sointeresting) places around the world. Enjoying food of different cultures. Up until recently, I thought the best fishand chips were to be found in Aldeburgh. But I have revised myopinion, the best fish and chips can be found at the restaurantshown below. If you visit Cyprus, go the few extra miles andtaste the best!

MORNING CHORUS CONCERTOn Sunday, June 28th an appreciativeaudience at the church enjoyed a delightfulconcert by the Morning Chorus ladies’ choir, directed and accompanied by the talentedand effervescent Janet Weston, and withcontributions from their guest baritoneChristopher Parfitt.

The programme was varied but tendedtowards the light-hearted, ranging from the

familiar, such as ‘Alexander’s Ragtime Band’ and ‘Seventy SixTrombones’, to the novel: an amusing version of ‘My Favourite Things’,written to celebrate Julie Andrews’s 60th birthday. Chris charmed uswith such songs as Flanders and Swann’s ‘I’m a G-nu’ and ‘Ol’ ManRiver’. In the final, more serious section, ‘Let There Be Peace on Earth’had a special resonance in the days after the terrorist attacks inTunisia and elsewhere.

The proceeds were divided between the church and the village hall, and gratefully received by both. Special thanks must go to Meg Nott, one of three Badingham residents in the choir, who initiated andmasterminded the event: a lovely way to spend a grey and slightlydrizzly summer Sunday afternoon! Dennington CEVCP SchoolCircus Ferrel came to Dennington school for an amazingtwo of days of fun and excitement. Charsfield and Denningtonschools met for workshops where the children learned circusskills such as juggling, tight rope walking, diablo and hula-hooping. Both days ended with a spectacular show.

Quotes from the children:- Jesse: “I loved showing everyone the tricks we hadpractised”; Isobelle: “It was funny when the clown walked the tight ropeholding two peoples’ hands”; Erin:“I liked it when the clown threw water atus”; Robbie: “I loved it when Heather went through the hoop”; William: “Myfavourite part was the man twirling fire”; Jasmin J: “I particularly enjoyedjuggling with the pom poms which seemed to get bigger as you threw them upin the air. I also enjoyed walking around the audience with light sticks”.

Class TopicsRobins – We have been busy learning about transport. Our wooden aero-planes are now finished; please come and see them flying from our class-room ceiling! We enjoyed our trip to the Transport Museum. Highlightsincluded travelling on the train to get there, sitting upstairs in some beautifulopen top trams and holding a fire engine hose.Wrens – Wrens grew a good yield of potatoes but it was not enough to winthe Suffolk competition. Class tests, including Year 2 SATs, have now finished. All the children did really well.Swallows – The highlight of the term has been the visit to London. Swallowsvisited the British Museum where we saw many Ancient Greek artefacts. Thechildren were also fascinated by the Ancient Egyptian mummies! The rivercruise was a real treat as well and we were delighted that we managed to seeTower Bridge open up to let a ship through. The children behaved excellentlythroughout our long day.

Open Farm DayMr and Mrs Rous held an ‘Open Farm Day’ on 7th June. It was very wellattended and the donations from the teas and cakes were very kindly donatedto the school. This was an impressive £328.32! It has been decided to spendthis money on seats and plants around the school grounds to enhance theschool entrance.

HISTORIC FINDS IN BADINGHAM contdThis is a follow up to the June/July issue. An exciting bit of news, one of our Low Street residents hasfound part of old ‘sugar tongs’. It is silver, but needs a good cleanto find out the age and where it was made.  It was found whilstdigging in a flowerbed – I’m thrilled, it’s great news. Two very rare coins were found in Suffolk. The 2,200 year oldsilver pennies, found in two different places by metal detectorists, were sold for £9,240 at Spinks auction house in Bloomsbury, making £3,000 more than expected. Both coins were made in Ipswich by the sameso-called Moneyer, named Wihtred. The Eye penny was made sometime between Circa 795-800 (about 270 yearsbefore the Battle of Hastings), during the region of East Anglian King Eadwald. The Haughley silver penny was a few years older, during the reign of King Offa(757 -796).Thanks to the owner of the silver tongs for showing me.  Keep looking, digging andhappy hunting!SonjaPS I have found a rusty old gate hinge, about 1920s

On Friday 22nd May a sizeable gathering met in the Village Hall for the Annual ParishMeeting. Here are some nuggets of information which I gleaned.

To celebrate the improvements made to the Pocket Park, a Pimms Picnic is beingplanned by the Parish Council for late August. Tim Barber and Mik Bedson havejoined the Council but (at the time of writing) there is a vacancy for anotherCouncillor. Draft Minutes are now published on the website to help you keep youup-to-date with parish matters. Perhaps you could offer help for Badingham’sEmergency Plan or nominate someone for the Shining Star Award, which recognisesthe efforts and activities of young people in the community and celebrates BobFoster’s 42 years of service on the Parish Council.

Good news from the Police report, in the period 1 May 14 to 30 Apr 15, there were7 recorded crimes in Badingham. This is down from a figure of 15 crimes in theprevious year and compares favourably to our neighbours. The crimes were definedas: 2 Thefts, 2 Public Disorder incidents and one each of Assault, Criminal Damage(Vehicle) and Domestic Incident.

Our District Councillor explained that Suffolk Coastal is made up of 124,600 proper-ties and 5,730 businesses. By merging services with Waveney, Suffolk Coastal hopeto save £10m – driving down costs while maintaining essential services. The Councilplans to move into their new HQ in late 2016. Councillor Stephen Burroughes waspleased to report that the efficiencies will help keep down the cost of Council Tax,which has now been frozen for five years. One of his responsibilities on the CountyCouncil involves improving the lives of children. There are 700 children in care inSuffolk. He also told us that school transport is under review and the Council isdriving through change to ensure all children have a good education. The Councilcontinues to invest in broadband with the aim of 100% superfast coverage by 2020and a 10 year plan to have speeds of 100Mb.

Rob explained how work is being carried out to make the Pocket Park safer andmore enjoyable for everyone with a nest swing about to be installed, plans to makethe pond safer and to revert parts to a wildflower meadow.

Dennington School was pleased to receive a ‘Good’ OFSTED grading which recog-nised the positive impact of its partnership with Charsfield Primary and one govern-ing body. The school has enjoyed taking part in sporting events in Debenham andFramlingham. School clubs include Bible, Spanish and Football. The children enjoyreading to Mrs Rous’ PAT dog Eider, a popular visitor.Sam explained that the six members of the Village Hall Committee hope to securefunding to make a good space for all users. Support from fund-raising events is muchappreciated. .../...

The weather, atmosphere and setting were perfect for the Badingham CommunityCouncil’s 2014 fete and, despite the need for umbrellas, the Village Picnic witnessedplenty of fun and laughter. Pauline also told us how funds have been spent - onelectrical costs for the defibrillator, outside lighting for the Village Hall, Christmasbiscuits and the Easter Egg Hunt.

The community gardens, oil syndicate, Tuesday Teas and Badingham Bees areamongst the activities enjoyed by Enterprise Badingham. More hands are sought totackle new projects which might include a Village Shop and Community Market.

Joan took us back 69 years to when Badingham Women’s Institute was first formed;an essential social and educational platform for ladies in the village who werecollected by coach for the meetings. The WI remains at the heart of the communityand continues to enjoy a rich programme of visits, guided walks, speakers and socials.

Maypole continues to be great fun and membership is growing with ever popularevents such as the car treasure hunt and summer BBQ plus lively monthly meetings.Gillian told us that all ladies are given a warm welcome with new members joiningfrom other villages.

In the past year, St John’s Church had hosted a WWI exhibition and service, a talk byRoy Tricker, Harvest Festival & BBQ and the Crib Service had again presented achurch full of people of all ages. The Christmas Sale, Beetle Drive and Carol Singing inthe White Horse had also been well attended. Ann thanked the volunteers who keepthe church spick and span both inside and out.

Playschool has enjoyed a busy twelve months, providing a first class service for localchildren. They provide care, with regular outings and activity days, for 20 familieswith children leading into four local primary schools.

For her Neighbourhood Watch report, Sonja told us that there are 228 properties inBadingham, of which 15 had changed hands in the past year, and 10 are holidayhomes. Theft of heating oil and garden implements are matters of concern while dogmess and parking by the White Horse are other issues which have been raised.

Meg told us that the Garden Club is thriving with 14 members meeting on the firstThursday of the month in each other’s gardens. Two outings – Wingfield House andWickham Hall – had been organised and the club now takes care of the raised bedsand pots by the Village Hall and will be happy to plant more along the side. The Book Club hopes to recommence later in the Summer, after a few missed monthsfor one reason or another. Edward explained how the studying a topic, rather than asingle book, introduces a broad range of books to other members and makes for amost pleasant social occasion. The Village Quiz raises between £60 - £85 for local charities when it takes place onthe first Tuesday of the month, October to July. Ian thanked the quiz masters, supporters and Lisa and Mark for allowing use of the White Horse.

Farming CalendarHarvest has started in Badingham with viners collecting lorry loads of shelledpeas ready for your freezer. Now the first crops for the combine harvester areturning: barley, oilseed rape, wheat and then beans. Different sieves are usedin the combine according to the size of the seed or grain being harvested.

The tractors and trailers you saw rattling past the pub on the day of the fetewere collecting green crops harvested for anerobic digesters - biogas energy. The weather was kind for haymaking - always a gamble. The grass was mowntwo days after the fete. And turned... and turned... and turned until it was fitfor baling.

Dad is quite intrigued by David and Michael Clarke’s hairy wheat. It looks agood, thick crop. There’s a lot of ‘over the hedge farming’ that takes place.Dad has been quite embarrassed by one field of beans which was rather toopopular with the pigeons and pheasants . At least the beans growing aroundthe edges have shot up and are hiding the bare patches. These are ‘tic beans’which are harvested when dried and, depending on their quality, might besold to to feed racing pigeons or for human consumption in north Africancountries, where they will grind the beans into a paste before using them intheir recipes.

Dr Dan Poulter MPMember of Parliamentfor Central Suffolk and North Ipswich

High speed broadband is one of the mostimportant issues affecting the lives ofpeople living in rural Suffolk both in theirbusinesses and at home. I am alwaysbeing contacted by Suffolk residents whoexpress their frustration with theunreliability and slow speed of broadbandservices. As a result, I secured a keydebate in Parliament this week.

I was joined in the debate by my Suffolkparliamentary colleagues in thanking EdVaizey, the Minister for Culture and theDigital Economy, for the part he hasplayed in the work already done on theroll-out of superfast broadband. Suffolkhas received £12m from the Governmentand a further grant of £15m from theDept of Culture, Media and Sport and hasled the way nationally to deliver fasterbroadband to very rural areas. However, there is still much more to be done and Iasked the Minister for his support inensuring BT works with, and complimentsthe work of, the County Council’s BetterBroadband for Sufolk programme, whoshould be commended for the work thatthey have already done.

The poor performance of BT, which hasbeen slow to prioritise coverage of areaswith poor broadband coverage, has beenholding back the delivery of superfastbroadband. In instances where the BetterBroadband for Suffolk team could exceedtimescales and other contractual parame-ters and deliver faster, BT has been limit-ing the delivery and this has been to thedetriment of residents in Suffolk who

have not received broadband in thetimely manner they should expect.

Farming and agriculture are the backboneof our rural economy but farmers havetold me that they do not have theinfrastructure connections to enable fastenough broadband to comply with onlineGovernment services, such as the newCommon Agricultural Policy InformationService which requires our farmers tosubmit all information online. Poor broad-band service is also affecting their abilityto innovate and use new farm technologyand meet with other regulation such asVAT, vehicle tax and animal tagging.

I made it clear to the Minister that it isessential that the roll-out of superfastbroadband must be linked with bettermobile phone technology and improvedmobile reception in our area. The lack ofreliable mobile phone signal impacts onday to day business, welfare and safetyissues.

I shall continue to push the Governmentfor more funding and support to deliversuperfast broadband for all residents ofSuffolk, especially the 5% of residentsthat live in very rural Suffolk. I asked theMinister for his support to avoid creatinga ‘digital divide’. I was pleased to hearfrom the Minister that he will investigatethe behaviour of BT in its delivery ofsuperfast broadband to ensure that theyhelp to accelerate the roll-out rather thanact as a handbrake. The Minister alsoagreed to update me on the outcomes ofhis investigations in the autumn and I willof course keep my constituents updatedin my efforts to ensure that every home, farm, business, school and shop receivesimproved broadband services.
