Township Manager Letter
Hello fellow residents. First, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all who participated in our fall events. It is equally important to thank those who made these events happen. Amongst those events were the Fall Festival, which included pumpkin carving, hay rides, and scarecrow making. The Children’s Fishing Derby was a resounding success. The folks that attended were treated to some great fishing and fellowship between residents. We certainly hope that the “Grand Finale” of the summer events held on September 25, 2015 met your expectations. The movie was great and fireworks were spectacular!
As your focus turns to the New Year, we hope to be a part of your New Year’s resolutions. Whether it is to attend some more functions, or volunteer to make this community better in 2016, we welcome you and your family. We also encourage your suggestions on new events that you would like the township to sponsor. Our Supervisors have made it a point to encourage that input.
This past year we built upon some events that were previously created for you, our residents. The Board of Supervisors has continued support of the activities for seniors and our Summer Arts and Recreation Camp has paid dividends. We have seen growth in attendance at both the camp and senior events. This year
we also started “Parents Night Out,” which allows parents to drop their children off at the Township building to watch a movie,
play games, and have dinner, while parents enjoy some time with each other.
We hope to see you at our upcoming events, which include the Holiday Express Train Ride and the Holiday Tree Lighting event. Happy Holidays!
Jeff Seagraves, township manager
Photos of the 2015 Fishing Derby and the 2015 Fall
Festival by Dave Milowicki.
My fellow Supervisors and I would like to take this opportunity to share with you some information and comments.
We had a great day at the Annual Fish Derby, little colder than we would have wanted but the “bite was on!” Special thanks to those who helped with stocking the stream and also helping out the day of the event. Congratulations to our winners! First prize went to Daniel Wethey with second awarded to James Chobany and third to Lauren Czymek. Once again our annual Fall Festival was a great success! Thanks to all of our participants who made this a memorable year, many pumpkins were carved, scare crows made, and cider consumed. I would like to thank our Township staff and the Park and Recreation Board for all of their hard work putting the event together. We still have things happening around town. Please check our calendar of events; we look forward to seeing you there.
We look forward to working with Rustin High School again this year for our Junior
Supervisor Program. We are in our fourth year and are excited to keeping this going for many more to come. We are always open to suggestions on working with our future leaders; feel free to share them with us.
If you have any interest is serving on one of our boards or commissions please contact either myself, JP, Sheri, or a member of our staff with a letter of interest and also let us know what interests you may have. Our township is blessed with great volunteers, not only the ones who serve on the boards and commissions, but the ones who help out at all of our events. Join our family of volunteers; it will be a rewarding experience.
With winter around the corner, please stay safe on the roadways. We work hard making sure that the roads are clear, if you see an area of concern, please let us know. In closing, have a nice winter, and we will see you around town!
Jim Raith, Chairman board of supervisors

New Year’s Resolutions• Improve education: improve grades, get
a better education, learn something new (such as a foreign language or musical instrument), study often, read more books, improve talents.
• Improve self: become more organized, reduce stress, be less grumpy, manage time, be more independent, watch less television, play fewer sitting-down video games.
• Take a trip.• Volunteer to help others, use civic
virtue, give to charity, volunteer to work part-time in a charity organization.
• Get along better with people, improve social skills, enhance social intelligence.
• Make new friends.• Spend quality time with family members.• Settle down, get engaged/get married,
have kids.• Pray more, be more spiritual.• Be more involved in sports or
different activities.
A New Year’s resolution is a tradition in which a person makes a promise to do an act of self-improvement beginning on New Year’s Day. The success rate is not very high. Most people set unattainable goals and sadly, fail. You are more likely to succeed if you share your resolutions and goals with your family and friends. Whatever you choose; set achievable objectives. Enjoy the process and most importantly be fulfilled by your progress. Popular New Year’s Resolutions
• Improve physical well-being: eat healthy food, lose weight, exercise more, eat better, drink less alcohol, quit smoking, stop biting nails.
• Improve mental well-being: think positive, laugh more often, enjoy life.
• Improve finances: get out of debt, save money, make small investments.
• Improve career: perform better at current job, get a better job, establish own business.

Have you ever looked at the Thornbury
Township seal or logo? Refer to the map in the
center of our Thornbury township seal and find the two yellow lines crossing the green field. On the left is the West Branch Chester Creek which pauses briefly at the dam in Brinton Lake, and on the right is the East Branch Chester which runs close to the railroad. The branches
join downstream into the mainstream Chester Creek which continues to join the Delaware River in Chester. While the nearby Crum & Ridley Creeks are designated High Quality, Cold Water Fishery (HQ-CWF) by the state and get special protections, the East Branch of Chester Creek is under much more pressure and is designated a Trout Stocking Fishery. This is not as favorable as it sounds; basically the trout have to be stocked because they have an unfavorable
environment. The CRC and the USGS (United States Geological Survey) have been keeping stream quality records as far back as 1970 on our local creeks. While the annual survey data is by the USGS, the remainder of the data is collected by citizen volunteers. Most of the observations and problem reports are done by citizens like you. The Thornbury EAC is beginning an investigation and survey of the available data to assure that stream quality is not being degraded.
Environmental Advisory Committee
Historic Resource Properties (HRP’s)Yearly our Commission gathers in-depth research on several HRPs. HRP #58 the John Cheyney House, HRP #53 the Star Tavern and HRP #72 the John Cheyney Log Tenant Farmstead were chosen for 2015. These three properties received their start 292 years ago, with the purchase of 1500 acres on January 16, 1724 by John and Thomas Cheyney. Today that acreage encompasses areas surrounding Locksley, Station, Creek, Cheyney, College Hill Tanguy and Street Roads. When the Cheyney brothers arrived they were witness to what we believe is our oldest HRP #006; The Sarum Farmstead. In 1724 Sarum had been nestled in and was well established at its present location for 35 to 40 years. In 1724 flocks of passenger pigeons darkened the sky, one flock described as being one mile wide and 300 miles long, took 14 hours to pass. Bears and wolves were occasionally seen, deer and wild turkeys were plentiful and Indians were somewhat numerous. William Penn had been dead for five
years and Independence Hall would be built seven years later. It was eight years before George Washington was born and 53 years before the Battle of Brandywine. Coal would not be used for fuel for another 68 years. Fourteen years after the brothers’ arrival Ben Franklin would organize the first fire company. Mail passed between Philadelphia and New York once a fortnight. Times have certainly changed.
Colonial Pennsylvania PlantationWe encourage you to visit this history rich farm in Edgemont. You will find yourself returning for more. Learn more at www.colonialplantation.org.
