Community Swimming Pools

Lancaster City Council operates and manages three community pools at Carnforth, Hornby and Heysham. The pools are open for public swimming throughout the year and offer courses in lifesaving, water safety and snorkelling in addition to children’s swimming lessons, fun sessions and exciting children’s parties.

April 2011 ProgrammeCome and join Lancaster City Council for two weeks of activities that areguaranteed to keep you busy during the Easter holiday.

Spring is upon us and what better way to spend your Easter holiday than dashing outdoors andtaking part in one of our exciting activities on offer in the Lancaster and Morecambe area?You’ll never be stuck for something to do with over 40 activities specially selected for youngpeople and if the weather doesn’t turn out great, many of our activities are based indoors.

Why not join us for some of our regular favouritesincluding skiing at Pendle Ski Club, mountain boarding atSedgwick and the ever popular wet and dry days at SaltAyre Sports Centre. For budding adventurers, we have anew range of outdoor activities that are sure to bepopular including wildlife detecting, a survival day atWarton Crag and taking on the challenging obstaclecourse and king swing at YMCA Lakeside.

Whatever you decide to try this holiday, you’re sure tohave lots of fun, make new friends and have a trulymemorable experience.

Workshops for under 8 year oldsThroughout our brochure you will find an increasednumber of workshops for 4 to 7 year olds.

PLEASE NOTE: A responsible adult must stay on siteduring any workshop for children under 8 years old.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE: Parents are expected to take part with their child in some workshops.

General Workshops The details for all our workshops can be found in this brochure. Please note that eachworkshop has different requirements e.g. age, specific clothing, venues vary andtransport is sometimes provided. So please see each workshop individually. Pleasealso note that due to some workshops being outdoors they are weather dependantand can be cancelled on the day. Booking InformationBookings can be taken in four ways:

• In person (from Monday 21 March)

• By post (from Monday 21 March)

• By phone (from Monday 21 March)

1. To book and pay in person

Bookings with cash payments can be made in person by visiting Salt Ayre Sports Centre

between 7am and 9pm Monday to Friday, or between 9am and 6pm Saturday and Sunday.

Be sure to have a fully completed booking form for each applicant and your payment.

2. To book and pay by postal application (no cash, cheques only)

1. Cheques are the only means of payment when applying by post.

2. Firstly, fully complete a booking form (you will find two forms at the centre pages of

this booklet). Use only one form per person.

3. Calculate the cost of the activities booked.

4. Across your cheque, write in words “An amount not to exceed £...”

5. Make the cheque payable to Lancaster City Council and sign the cheque.

We will write in the final amount and advise you of the amount when forwarding your tickets.

6. Make sure you have signed and dated the declaration.

This system reduces the number of cheques that may have to be returned to customers, due to

the unavailability of some activities when booking. For example:

3 activities at £6 each = £18

Only two activities available, amount due = £12

Complete the process by placing your cheque(s) and booking form(s) in an envelope and send

All applicants for the Holiday Activity Programme will require a parent or guardian declaration.

This will be done during your booking.

Additional InformationActivity information - We strongly advise that all participants wear suitable clothing for the

activity that they are due to take part in. Information about suitable clothing or requirements

for each session can be found in pages 11 to 17.

Disabled access - Where possible, we use premises which are fully accessible. If you would like

more information, please do not hesitate to contact Leisure Development on (01524) 582854.

Enquiries and further details - The Holiday Activity Programme Office is based at:

Passport to Leisure holders - If your child has or is included on a Passport to Leisure card, they are

entitled to £1 discount per activity.

To obtain extra brochures or for general enquiries, please contact the Holiday Activity Programme

the council’s website at www.lancaster.gov.uk/holidayprogramme.

The programme is correct at the time of going to print. However, the organisers reserve the right to make changes. Participationin all the activities is entirely at the participant’s own risk. Lancaster City Council regrets that under no circumstances can refundsbe given, unless the council cancels the activity due to minimum numbers or any unforeseen circumstances.

Activ8

Activ8 is an exciting four day programme where you can try out new games and activities, learn

sports skills and make friends in a fun and safe environment. Each day starts with a brief introduction

to the day’s activities and then it’s off to the pool for Salt Ayre’s famous fun and floats session until

lunchtime. Please note that lunch is not provided but you can take advantage of our excellent food at

our Fresh Ayre café. After lunch it’s into the main sports hall for an afternoon of sporting activity

including football, Danish long ball, kwik cricket, hockey and dodgeball as well as many other fun

indoor games.

It’s going to be a great fun packed four days, so why not get your holidays off to rip roaring start and

enrol on Activ8?

Adapted bike session NEW!

Our adapted bike session is ideal for children who have a disability or struggle to ride a conventional

bike. Enjoy the experience and thrill of cycling on our tricycles, side-by-side and wheelchair bikes

along our outdoor track. In poor weather, this session will take place in Salt Ayre’s main sports hall.

Archery

If you fancy becoming the next Robin Hood, why not come along and try your hand at archery? We

will teach you all the skills needed to hit the board every time. You will take part in team games,

individual games, scoring games and balloon popping. This course is ideal for beginners.

Beacon Fell orienteering

Experience the great outdoors with this fun and friendly orienteering session within the boundaries of

Beacon Fell National Park. With the skills you are taught in the morning you’ll be able to tackle the

harder course in the afternoon and find your own way around this beautiful woodland park. There

will be a free ‘Egg-cellent’ prize for everyone taking part.

Be a zoo keeper NEW!

Have you got what it takes to become a zoo keeper for the day? Working with our zoo keepers at

Williamson Park you will learn how to look after animals, help feed them and get the Butterfly House

ready for opening. Are you brave enough to handle some of our mini-beasts? This will be a great

morning for anyone interested in animals.

Cheerleading

Do you want to get into something totally different and have a great time whilst doing it? Then look

no further, cheerleading is for you. These classes are fun; they encourage team work and cater for all

ranges of abilities. Pom dances, stunting and gymnastics are just some of the skills you will learn. If

you find yourself enjoying the session and wish to continue after the April half term then you can join

the Bay Stormers who train weekly at Salt Ayre Sports Centre, so why not give it a try?

Dodgeball

You’ve seen the movie, now come down to Salt Ayre and try this crazy sport for yourself. This fun

session will teach you all the skills you need to take part in a series of dodgeball games. The sport

will test your co-ordination, movement and balance. So why not come along, learn a new sport and

have a fast and fantastic time?

Early learner’s trampolining

If you’re getting bored of doing the same old thing during the holidays, then bounce your way to fun

this holiday with this popular trampoline session. Trampolining is a great way to learn new skills and

keep active, so come along and join in the fun.

Easter egg treasure hunt NEW!

Can you solve the clues, put together the puzzle and discover where the treasure is hidden? If you

fancy a challenge then come on down to Williamson Park and take part in our new Easter egg

treasure hunt.

Football frenzy

Our popular football frenzy session is always game for a laugh. This morning activity is a great way to

learn new skills, play some fun football games and take part in a very special football tournament.

The session will be lead by FA qualified Morecambe FC Football coaches and will take place outside

on an Astro-Turf pitch. Please bring a waterproof jacket and a drink.

I’m a child… get me out of here!

You have seen the TV programme now experience the show for real! Experience bush tucker trials

and all the excitement that comes with it. If you’re up for a challenge and a laugh this is the activity

for you.

Indoor tennis

Ideal for beginners, this indoor tennis session introduces you to the basics of tennis including

forehand, backhand and volleying. The session will end with a small competition to give you the

chance to put your new skills to the test.

Junior wildlife detective NEW!

Discover the insects and mini-beasts of Williamson Park and explore the undergrowth to reveal the

habitats in which creatures live. What lurks in the woodland? What creatures only come out at night?

Find the answers to these questions and more on this fascinating wildlife detective session.

Karate

Karate training consists of punching, kicking and blocking techniques perfected over centuries for self-

defence and physical development. Join us for a typical karate training session involving warm up,

basic combinations, partner work, practice of form (kata) and physical exercises such as stretching. A

great introduction to this ancient martial art.

King swing / obstacle course NEW!

Swing through the trees like Tarzan and become the king or queen of the jungle with our king swing

and obstacle course on the banks of Lake Windermere.

This session begins with the famous king swing: a giant swing that swings you though the trees at an

awesome height and speed. When you catch your breath, it’s time to test your climbing, jumping,

sprinting and crawling ability with our fun obstacle course. The session will be run by the YMCA

Lakeland centre’s qualified and experienced instructors.

Learn to swim week

Learn to swim this holiday with an exclusive five day course at Carnforth Swimming Pool. This course

is ideal for non-swimmers who want to gain confidence in the water, learn propulsion and buoyancy.

Marvellous mini beasts NEW!

Calling all mini beast hunters! Come and explore the amazing mini beasts that live within the grounds

of Williamson Park. This session will be followed by a tour of the mini beast area with one of our zoo

keepers.

Mini Olympics

Do you fancy being the next Olympic champion? If so, this could be your first step in achieving a gold

medal in the future. Your all-round athletic skills will be tested during this two hour training session of

action-packed events including long jump, javelin, shot putt, 100m sprint and relay.

Morecambe Football Club – coaching and ground tour NEW!

Come along to the brand new Globe Arena, the home of Morecambe Football Club. This amazing

session will include a tour of the Globe Arena, a chance to meet the players and manager and a

coaching session on the new outdoor Astro-Turf training pitches. The coaching will be delivered by

Morecambe Football Club’s own fully qualified coaches. If you’re a fan of the Shrimps, this is the

course for you!

Mountain biking skills NEW!

Pedal, jump and hop on down to Salt Ayre Sports Centre to learn the techniques needed to tackle the

hardest mountain biking routes in the Lake District. Your bike skills will be challenged with some fast

downhill, drastic drop-offs and some berms. After learning the skills you will take part in some fun

and exciting races. Bikes are included on the day.

Mountain boarding – surf the turf

Welcome to the exciting world of mountain boarding, a thrilling blend of surfing, skateboarding,

mountain biking and snowboarding. All equipment is provided for this three hour session where you

will be given expert tuition on the board and plenty of time to practice your new found skills.

Multi-skills

Our multi-skills session is for anyone wanting some serious sporty fun! Why not spend a morning

playing lots of different games that can be enjoyed by all? This session is not competitive and is a

great way of making friends, enjoying yourself and having a jolly good time. Parent /guardians can

join in, watch or get a well-earned hot drink in the café. All coaches are competent, qualified and

experienced in teaching keystage 1.

Orienteering

Come along to this fun and friendly session to explore Williamson Park whilst learning new skills.

Racing cycling NEW!

Are you the next Mark Cavendish or Bradley Wiggins? Test out your skills at the Salt Ayre Sports

Centre cycling track: the home of Lancashire cycling. You will be taking part in an exciting training

session with British Cycling qualified coaches and this will be followed by a series of races. Bike hire is

included in this session.

Skiing

Fly down the dry-ski slope at Pendle Ski Club and learn how to turn, race and most importantly stop.

This session is lead by the club’s own expert instructors and is ideal for beginners.

Snorkelling NEW!

A chance to learn how to use the mask and snorkel you bought on holiday! Learn basic snorkelling

techniques and then practice your new skills in some fun underwater games. If you do not have your

own snorkel you can borrow ours.

Survival day NEW!

Are you the next Bear Grylls? Join our day long expedition into the wilderness of Warton Crag and

explore the beauty of this barren countryside. On our great adventure you will learn how to build

shelters, cook food in the wild and take part in a treasure hunt. You will also learn the skills to make

a bow and arrow and a Red Indian throwing stick. Please bring warm clothing, hat, gloves and a

waterproof jacket and a packed lunch.

Survival skills

Calling all adventurers! Learn how to survive in the wild with this introduction to survival skills. This

session will teach you the basics of survival: what to take on an expedition, how to build bivouac shelters,

campfires and cook in the wild. Please bring warm clothing, hat, gloves and a waterproof jacket.

Trampolining

A fantastic introduction to trampolining! Fly through the air on this challenging session; it’s great for

gaining confidence, learning new skills and meeting new friends.

Wet and dry day

A totally brilliant day not to be missed at Salt Ayre Sports Centre. Starting with a brief introduction

about the day’s activities, it’s off to the pool for our famous fun and floats session until lunchtime.

Please note that lunch is not provided but you can take advantage of our excellent food at our Fresh

Ayre café. After lunch it’s into the main sports hall for an afternoon of sporting fun and mayhem.

Included in this action packed afternoon will be dodgeball, football and Danish long ball. All in all, a

great day of fun.
