Free Eye Check Up Camp
Women’s Day Celebration
On the occasion of International Women’s Day and second
anniversary of SMC II, a Free Eye check up camp was organized
for Vasuli and nearby villages. For the promotion of the eye camp,
pamphlets were circulated to the Sarpanch of Vasuli, Bhamboli, Warhale
gaon, Savardari and Koregaon villages. They were very pleased with this
event.
The day started by a small inaugural function at 9.30 am at SMC II.
Prominent people were present at the inauguration.
In the camp, a total of 120 patients were examined. Amongst these, 10
patients were diagnosed for cataract (from these 4 were operated free of
cost at Nayan Eye Hospital ), 40 patients were given free spectacles while
57 patients were given free medicines .
The camp was successful and very
helpful to the community. Sarpanch
of villages have requested for another
camp.
We celebrated Women’s day on 10th March with the Chakan
ladies who make news paper bags. The idea to celebrate
this event with these ladies came from the Marriott Hotel.
Marriott Hotel donates us lots of old news papers every month for
this project.
Mr Aniket Madkaikar, Manager Marriott Hotel told us that their staff
wants to celebrate Women’s day with these ladies and they want to
spend some time with them. So we planned the event on 10th March.
The HR manager along with the Marriott staff came
to Vasuli phata village to meet the women. After
the introduction session we briefed them about
the project and gave the background of the
ladies. Some ladies shared their experience
of doing this work and how it helped them to
earn income. The staff wanted to learn how to
make the bags so our ladies showed them the
demonstration of the bags making.
Marriott people also had got lunch
boxes for all of us from Marriott. So
we all had lunch together. After this
we felicitated the Marriott staff.
We also felicitated our ladies as
it was a Women’s day. Overall
it was a fun event and everyone
enjoyed it as it was a short and
sweet event.

FROM FORBES FOUNDATIONSocial Venture Partners
A recent grantee of our Foundation is Social
Venture Partners, Pune chapter.
Social Venture Partners India was established in
2012 in Bangalore, with the focused purpose of creating
sustainable livelihoods; SVP members engage with
NGOs in their own cities, which helps to increase their
societal impact.
In just under two years, SVP Bangalore has over 90
committed partners and in June 2014 the Pune SVP
chapter emerged. “We have over two dozen engaged
partners with their hearts in the right place, a galaxy
of high quality NGOs in the livelihood space to choose
from and with the first three worthy NGOs and their lead
partners identified and the funds beginning to flow to the
benefit of the community, we believe that we are just at
the first or second milestone of a very long journey,” says
Ganesh Natarajan, convenor of the Pune chapter.
Our Foundation was one of the first few to join hands
with SVP; currently SVP Pune has zeroed in on 3 NGOs
in the city to walk shoulder to shoulder with. These
organizations are Jagruti Seva Sanstha, Anjuman-i-
Isalam and Ekansh.
SVP Pune is committed to help scale up the ‘Nurse Aide
Training programme’ wherein high school dropouts from
the city’s slum dwellings will be trained and placed as
Nurse aides in various small and large hospitals in the
city.
JAGRUTI Seva Sanstha has been successfully running
the Nurse Aide programme for 7 years and SVP Pune
has just powered their new programme that began on
November 3, 2014. Jagruti as the name suggests, strives
for ‘awakening’ of the underprivileged towards new
knowledge, better skills, values and attitudes.
Jagruti makes efforts to empower the poor and needy
with education, vocational training and healthcare
with focus on women and children, support education
and self - development programmes for slum children;
surveys of slums reveal that most of the parents are
illiterate and they work as labourers or as household
help.
The rate of school dropouts is very high amongst their
children. Girls, in particular, when they fail at school
examinations, are married off at an early age. Therefore
‘JAGRUTI’ conducts support education classes with no
fees from 1st to 10th standard to arrest school dropouts.
Very bright and needy students receive support for
higher education, including hostel arrangements for girls.
Programmes are conducted for all-round development
of the children to imbibe good values, habits and skills
in them. Jagruti tries to achieve this by providing library
and reading room facilities, conducting hobby classes
arranging educational visits, arranging lectures and
presentations by social workers, scientists and doctors.
The Nurse Aide programme enrolls girls and women of
16 years of age and above with a minimum qualification
of 7th standard. The course has in-classroom training for
three months after which the girls are placed at various
hospitals for an internship of 3 months where they get
to learn the practical aspects of training. They also start
earning as they are then eligible for a stipend. Upon
completion of training, the girls are placed as assistants
to nurses at various medical establishments across the
city.
The same programme will be implemented by Anjuman-
i-Islam as well beginning January 2015. By the end of
the calendar year 2015, SVP hopes to have created
livelihoods in the healthcare segment for over 100 young
women through this programme.

recognized private ITI based in Nigdi. It was a full time course for the youth in the neighbouring villages who have been
dropped out of school. The day was split into theory classes in the morning and practicals post lunch. Total twelve students
from five villages completed the course successfully.
We are hopeful that the students will be gainfully employed soon.

A t our Kasarwadi factory we have cafeteria for our members
where members can come and enjoy the snacks items
whenever they feel hungry. In this cafeteria we have a
counter for our community ladies where they can come and sell
the snacks. There was a demand from our members to have
some home made snacks in the cafeteria. So we started this

them the cutlery to serve the snacks. They bring some delicious and
nutritious snacks which attracts our people to buy from them. We check
the quality and the quantity of the snacks. We also check the cleanliness
of the counter and give instruction to them whenever needed.
They bring variety of snacks specially those snacks which our members don’t get in the canteen
like Thalipeeth, Dhokala, Variety of Parathas etc. In the after noon they bring snacks like Bhel,
