Dear Students and Parents:

Welcome to your practicum/internship class. This handbook is designed to address course guidelines and regulations around documentation and requirements necessary to be successful. Please review this with your student and return all of the signature pages to the teacher / coordinator. All signature pages are due NO LATER THAN THURSDAY, AUGUST 29, 2014. Failure to do so may result in removal from the program.

Practicum/Internship opportunities are designed to expose students to real world situations and train them for entry-level positions in the work force. The student’s job must be approved by the coordinator in order for him/her to receive course credit. A training plan will be developed for each student based on the experiences provided by his/her training site.

Students receive instruction in employment, human relation and communication skills. Business concepts are also taught in the work environment. Practicum/Internship programs are divided into three important components, classroom instruction, on-the-job training, and student organization. Opportunities for students to develop leadership and management abilities are also provided through participation in Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSO). Each is an integral part of the overall program and student participation in all three areas is required.

Program Objectives: To assist students in making career choices - This includes exploring today’s job market, getting to know

oneself, and developing an individual career portfolio. To assist students in basic workplace practices - This includes safety, workplace ethics, communication skills,

and professionalism training. To assist students in professional development - This includes work relationship training, leadership skill

development, problem-solving and thinking skill development, technology applications, and time management skill development.

On-the-Job TrainingAccording to the U. S. Department of Labor, most people work to satisfy one or all of three needs. These needs are: Financial responsibility Contribution to society Personal fulfillment

Please know that your campus teacher/coordinator is here to support students through this transition. As part of the program, it is necessary to assist students in transitioning into adulthood; therefore it is expected that students are responsible for their own communication with the teacher/coordinator and job-training supervisor.

2 We provide challenging career pathways for all students utilizing real world practices, evolving skill sets, attitudes and behaviors.

Career Preparation

What is Practicum Education? Learning by doing is considered to be one of the best and most lasting methods of acquiring new knowledge and skills. With this in mind, the business community cooperates with the school in providing this learning experience to students through its practicum/internship programs. This experience offers each student hands-on training in the preferred occupation of the student. The work portion of the program is considered as an extension of the classroom. Not all jobs fit into becoming an approved training station so the student must work with the teacher /coordinator on feasibility of this situation.

What is a training station? A training station is defined as an approved business establishment which employs a career preparation student and provides supervised work experience in accordance with a written training plan. It is only after the teacher/coordinator approves worksite for the student and the training plan is completed, the business becomes an approved education training station.

What is the purpose of a training plan? The training of each student, both in the classroom and on the job, is conducted in accordance with a written training plan developed by the teacher/coordinator together with the employer. It includes skills to be acquired, information to be taught in class, length of training, and wages to be earned. The document used is provided by the Texas Education Agency and current child labor laws must be followed. Specific classroom assignments are noted based on the job position, if necessary.

What is a teacher/coordinator? Practicum programs are led by a teacher/coordinator who monitors the student’s progress at the training station and conducts the class at school. It is the coordinator’s role to keep in close communication with each student’s employer to provide correlated classroom instruction for that student’s specific job requires, as well as to become aware of problem situations which can be remedied. However, because the experience takes place in the business world, students should work hard at recognizing and solving problems on the job. It should be understood that the coordinator does not hire, terminate, promote, or demote students on the job.

Practicum/Internship Program Guidelines

In order for this experience to be effective and beneficial to the student, meet the high school accreditation requirements of the state agency, and comply with federal guidelines, the following rules will be enforced. It is each student’s responsibility to read, become familiar with, and follow the rules and standards in this handbook.

To participate in a CTE Practicum/Internship program:

1. Students must be 16 years of age or older.

2. Enroll in Practicum course for one full academic year.

The following guidelines govern the career preparation program:

1. Students must be employed at an approved training station within two weeks after the first day of school (or entrance into the program) or they will be removed from the program. It is each student’s responsibility to secure a job.

2. All training stations must be approved by the teacher/coordinator.

3. The Employer Contact Verification Sheet is to be completed by any practicum student who is seeking employment upon entering the program or who has lost employment due to no fault of his own (examples--lay-off or cut-back in hours). The student is required to make 3 contacts per day during the first week and 4 contacts per day during the second week. Sheets are to be filled out completely and signed by a manager or supervisor at the place of business. If the form is not properly completed, the student will lose job credit during that time period. Verification sheets are to be submitted with your employee time sheet each week.

4. Students must provide their own reliable transportation to and from the training station. In the past, students have had problems relying on parents or friends to drive them to and from the job. If this causes a conflict with your employment, your grade will suffer. Be sure to have reliable transportation.

5. Because the training station is an extension of the school day, all the school rules and regulations apply while on the job.

4 We provide challenging career pathways for all students utilizing real world practices, evolving skill sets, attitudes and behaviors.

Page 5: HOLD HARMLESS - STUDENT · Web viewIt is each student’s responsibility to read, become familiar with, and follow the rules and standards in this handbook. To participate in a CTE

6. Students are not permitted to change training stations without the teacher/coordinator’s approval. A job change request form should be submitted to the teacher/coordinator for consideration. Since career preparation is a training program, students are expected to stay in the same training station in which they have been placed.

7. Any student who quits a job at an approved training station without prior written approval of the teacher/coordinator will receive a grade of a 0 for the work portion of the nine-week grading period.

8. Any student who resigns from a job with the teacher/coordinator’s approval or is terminated unjustifiably will be given two weeks, to secure another approved training station. During this two week period, the student must complete an Employer Contact Verification form.

9. Disruptive behavior , poor work habits, or poor attitude in the classroom may result in immediate dismissal from the program

10. Dismissal from a training station for insubordination, refusal to work, poor work habits, or poor attitude on the job will result in:

a. A grade of 0 for the work portion of the nine week grading period and removal from the program.

b. A discipline referral to the assigned assistant principal for failure to comply with assigned rules.

11. If a student is fired from the job for dishonesty, theft, or immoral conduct , the following consequences will occur:

a. A grade of 0 for the work portion of the nine- week grading period.b. Removal from program.

12. Students dismissed from a training station must notify the teacher/coordinator no later than the class period following the dismissal notification.

13. If the student misses school for any reason, the student must call or email the teacher/coordinator with explanation for absence by 9 a.m. Students must leave a message if the teacher/coordinator is not available.

13. On the day that a student is absent from any class (excluding school approved trips), the student is not allowed to report to work. The only exception is when a student has a

documented doctor or dentist appointment, court appearance, funeral, etc. approved in advance by the teacher/coordinator.

14. Students unable to work temporarily because of medical reasons, documented by a doctor’s note, will be assigned alternate class work. However, students on homebound instruction are not eligible to receive CTE contact hours.

15. Grades will be calculated as follows:1/2 – Classroom daily activities1/4 – Classroom major grades1/4 - Work portion

16. Students should dress in an acceptable manner both in school and at the training station. Students must also uphold business policies and standards in conduct and personal hygiene.

17. All Fort Bend ISD policies concerning student’s behavior will be enforced while students are attending program functions.

18. Parents are encouraged to communicate with the teacher/coordinator concerning problems encountered by the student at the training station rather than talking directly with the employer.

19. CTSO participation is an integral part of the career preparation class. Therefore, all members of the class should take an active role in the designated CTSO.

20. Students are required to attend the employer appreciation banquet with their employers as their guest. Student will be required to pay for self and employer unless needed amount is acquired through fundraising.

21. All CTE practicum/intern students are required to work at their training station until the last day of school to receive credit for the course.

22. A student who is dropped from a CTE Practicum program cannot be enrolled in another CTE Practicum program that same school year.

23. Students should have a professional attitude and be loyal to their employer.

24. Students must be employed a minimum of 15 hours per week for three credits and 10 hours for 2 credits. Students are required to work a minimum of five hours Monday - Friday. The additional hours may be worked any day of the week.

25. On altered schedule days, students are required to make arrangements in advance with their training stations to accommodate the altered school schedule.

26. Students assigned to ISS will remain in ISS until the end of the school day; they will not be excused for work.

27. Early release students are not to remain on campus during release hours unless accompanied by a teacher or sponsor. Leave the building immediately at your release time. Please carry release card or schedule with you at all times.

28. Separate your work life from your personal life. While at work, don’t gossip or complain. When at work, be productive. If you are not productive, your employer loses and you will be replaced. You were hired because they need someone who they can count on to work.

Questions and Answers

Why does the teacher have anything to do with my job if I got the job and have had it for a long time? You are receiving three credits of school work by being a part of the CTE Practicum program. If you weren’t at work, you would be at school. Therefore, your job is a vital part of your schedule, and all school rules and standards must be followed. One of these rules is that your teacher/coordinator make contact with your training station supervisor at least six times during the school year, more if necessary, to assess how you are doing in the program.

Since this is an elective class, will we have much homework? This class is just like any other class. There may be unfinished work to complete, a new assignment to do, notebooks to assemble, projects to do, tests to study for, etc. There is homework if the teacher sees the need for it.This class is like any other academic class. You will receive three credits for it. The grade comes from your performance on the job and in the classroom. The class will consist of daily work, individual and group work, major grades, projects, tests, and many other activities.

Can you get me the job I want?No one can get you a job. You must sell yourself. The teacher/coordinator will provide you with “leads.” Many times the teacher or the reputation of the program will have a major influence, but you must meet the standards of the particular business. The teacher will take into consideration your interest and try to find “leads” that match them, although this depends on the availability of jobs in particular fields.

How much money can I make?Making money is not the purpose of the CTE Practicum program, but a benefit of it. The major purpose is the learning experience.

How can the CTSO benefit me?The CTSO can be helpful in many ways. It allows the student to be a part of a group with social activities. It also gives the student a chance to compete at regional, state, and national levels. Winning at these competitive events can be helpful on resumes and scholarship applications. Being active in CTSO provides you with leadership skills and gives you the opportunity to meet others interested in the business field.

What if my hours get cut below the hours required?

Page 10: HOLD HARMLESS - STUDENT · Web viewIt is each student’s responsibility to read, become familiar with, and follow the rules and standards in this handbook. To participate in a CTE

The first thing to do is to consult with your teacher/coordinator. If this situation continues, you will have to get another job or be required to work un-paid training hours at your campus or one designated by your teacher/coordinator. A student is responsible for completing the total number of hours required within a semester.

What if I get laid off at work?If you are laid off for reasons beyond your control, it will not be held against your grade, but there will be a time limit to get a new job. During this time, the Employer Contact Verification Sheet must be completed on a daily basis.

What can I get out of this class? You will learn all about a specific occupation in class and get hands-on training and experience at your training station. It is a way to build your resume, earn money, and participate in additional activities which will assist you in qualifying for scholarships.

Why is the employer appreciation banquet important?Your employers have worked all year to train you in marketable skills. They have also taken time to cooperate with the school in its requirements in the program. Therefore, it is good public relations to recognize the efforts that your employer has put forth on your behalf.

Why can’t I quit my job if I find one that pays more money?Your employer hired you in good faith for the school year, and you should fulfill your obligation. If there are circumstances that bring about a job change, the change must be handled properly with the assistance and approval of your teacher/coordinator.

How will teachers know if I am at work and not at school? The teacher will personally check each absence with the appropriate employers.

Can you get me a job close enough to home so that I can walk? No. It is a requirement of this program that you have your own transportation to and from work.

What if I feel my rating from my employer is unfair? You should discuss your ratings with your employer to find out how you can improve your performance.

What if I want to go somewhere over the winter holidays or spring break, but my employer wants me to work? You must get permission well in advance in order to give the employer time to cover your absence. Do not just take off without permission. Employers will usually work with you if you cooperate with them.

Page 11: HOLD HARMLESS - STUDENT · Web viewIt is each student’s responsibility to read, become familiar with, and follow the rules and standards in this handbook. To participate in a CTE

How should I dress on the job?You should dress professionally for your specific job. Varying occupations and job settings require different types of dress. You should ask your employer for guidelines and observe them in that business.

I really need the last two weeks of school for graduation and senior activities. Can I quit my job then? No, you are getting credit for working, too. In the event that you have previously earned the required number of hours at your job site, you may submit a two-week resignation notice the last two weeks of school. In the event that your employer choses to let you go immediately, you will be released from your job without negative recourse. A two-week resignation may not be given prior to the last two weeks of class.

What types of jobs meet the requirements for training-stations?For students on a paid training plan, pay must be received in the form of a check or direct deposit. Students must have documentation of all payments received. A student must work at a place of business where federal taxes are properly withheld. There MUST be a legal paper trail for the job. Jobs that require students to drive are not permissible.

Can I work for my family? It is not considered best practice for a student to work for a family member. If a student works in a family business, they must be held to the same standards of other employees and the specific job functions must meet the standards of the practicum/internship program. Legally documented time on the job and pay are a requirement of this program.

Can I work in someone’s home? No. A training station may not be located in someone’s home or on a personal residence property.

Are there any restrictions on types of jobs?Students may not partake in the selling of tobacco or alcohol products. If a student works in a restaurant, they may not serve alcohol.

15. Family or friends are not to visit the student on their jobs at any time, especially boyfriends and girlfriends.
