The battle for true equality for LGBT citizens is

advancing on multiple fronts and is arguably the civil rights movement of this century in the United States and around the globe. LGBT Rights Fellows have helped advance that movement in legal, legislative, political and electoral arenas at the local, state and national levels.

Hofstra Law is committed to diversity and supportive of our students’ interest in creating a more fair and just society. With such issues as marriage equality, hate-crime protections, employment discrimination and the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell” all receiving greater attention than ever before, now is the time to seize the opportunity of the Hofstra Law LGBT Rights Fellowship.

Fellowship Key FactsHofstra Law School selects up to three LGBT Rights Fellows each year from students admitted to the entering class. Fellows are chosen based on demonstrated academic ability and experience advocating for LGBT rights before law school. Upon graduation, fellows are expected to commit to helping further LGBT equality. Advocacy may include political activity, providing legal assistance to LGBT social support networks and other forms of social justice work related to LGBT individuals and communities. The fellowship is open to persons of all sexual orientations and gender identities.

Tuition ScholarshipFellows are eligible for up to $20,000 each academic year.

Summer StipendFellows are eligible for up to two $7,500 stipends for summer LGBT rights-related work with nonprofit or government employers.

Annual RenewalFellows are required to maintain a year-end cumulative average within the top 50% of their entering class in their first year, and in subsequent years must maintain a cumulative academic rank within the top 50% of their entire graduating class (i.e., all full-time and part-time students with a common anticipated graduation date). They also must fully participate in program activities and externships.

“I chose Hofstra Law because I wanted a career in LGBT advocacy. The school’s commitment to LGBT rights was obvious: many of my professors were scholars on LGBT rights issues, and nearly all of my classes discussed LGBT rights. The mentoring and training I received as a fellow at Hofstra Law helped me get the job of my dreams at a national LGBT rights organization.”

Patrick Paschall ’10 Policy Advocate, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Washington, D.C.

LGBT Rights Fellows in ActionWhile at Hofstra Law School, LGBT Rights Fellows have made an impact on LGBT equality through a variety of activities. For example, they have:

• advocated for LGBT youth at the Peter Cicchino Youth Project;

• worked for transgender equal rights at the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund;

• drafted anti-discrimination legislation at the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, in Washington, D.C.;

• assisted with marriage equality litigation at the National Center for Lesbian Rights, in San Francisco;

• worked on landmark gay rights cases at Lambda Legal, in New York City;
