IntroductionThe Instructor’s Manual for Modern Database Management, 11th edition provides chapter-by-chapter support for the classroom instructor, along with the Web site materials for Instructors and Students. Faculty-specific materials are available on the password-protected section of the Instructor Resource Center and student-oriented materials are available on the textbook companion Web site. The desired Web site resources may be accessed by selecting the related link at www.pearsonhighered.com/hoffer. A Quick Guide that outlines the available resources accompanying the textbook is printed inside the front cover of the textbook and is also available for download from the companion Web site.

The Web site resources provide substantial support to the topics covered in the textbook and are very valuable learning aids for both instructors and students. Two different physical database implementations for the Pine Valley Furniture Company (PVFC) case study (that accompanies all full-text printed chapters) are provided as part of the Web site resources. A simplified version with limited data, BookPVFC, is provided to illustrate SQL commands covered in Chapters 6 and 7 of the textbook. A more complete version with expanded structure and data, BigPVFC, is provided to facilitate the completion of Problems and Exercises in Chapters 6 and 7. Each version of the database is available in MS-Access, Oracle script, and comma-delimited formats, and the simplified version (BookPVFC) is also available as an SQL Server script. Additionally, instructors are welcome to access both PVFC databases at the Teradata University Network and Teradata Student Network resources, in addition to other production-sized sample databases, in support of database topical instruction with the Modern Database Management, 11th edition textbook adoption. The case study databases provide ready access to hands-on practice and exploration for database implementation and SQL topics.

The student-oriented materials hosted on the textbook companion Web site include the full-text chapters 12–14 of the textbook, data and documentation files for the PVFC case study, links to all the Web resources mentioned in the text, glossaries, additional topical materials, downloadable version of the Quick Guide to resources with embedded hyperlinks, and Camtasia video tutorials that supplement selected chapters with content on more difficult concepts and helpful hints.

The faculty-specific materials include this Instructor’s Manual, PowerPoint slides, Test Item Files, data and documentation files for the PVFC case study, additional topical materials, Image Library files, Errata document (detailing any issues found after printing of the textbook), and the TestGen testbank files.

Each chapter in the Instructor’s Manual includes the following aids:

Graphics in the Instructor’s Manual

Appendix A covers several commonly used modeling tools used to depict entity-relationship and other data modeling formalisms. The majority of the Instructor’s Manual solutions to chapter Review Questions/Problems and Exercises were created using the SmartDraw drawing tool (see www.smartdraw.com for more details), in order to depict the data models according to textbook notational convention requirements and to focus on the logical data modeling requirements. The Visio drawing tool was used to produce the images when required by the specific end-of-chapter material, and to produce the object-oriented class diagrams. In order to support cross-platform usage of the Instructor’s Manual files, all diagrams were converted to Graphic Interchange Format (.gif) prior to inclusion in the Instructor’s Manual chapters.
