Dear Washington DC/Metro NEWH members:

The year 2012 represents a truly exciting time for our industry as a whole as well as for our chapter specifically. We are the new Mecca of hospitality—hosting most of the major flags, ownership, and management groups as well as iconic firms from the architecture, design, and construction industries residing within the boundaries of our fortunate chapter. As such, we are laying the groundwork for one of our most successful and exciting years, filled with new programs, initiatives, and fundraisers.

As our membership levels remain one of the highest in the country, we continue striving to organize events that provide tremendous added value. In addition to holding events, the main endeavor of our chapter is to raise funds for the scholarships we award each year to truly deserving students aspiring to enter the hospitality community. Since its inception, the Washington DC/Metro Area Chapter has awarded more than $180,000 in scholarships to local students.

This year, we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of our chartering and will be awarding $20,000 in scholarships funds, bringing our total to more than $200,000.

A tremendous amount of thanks is due to the outgoing board members from 2011 as well as to the returning board members, who have donated their time over the past year and continue to do so. I would also like to extend a warm welcome to some of our first-time board members that will now be heading up a number of committees. If it were not for the dedicated members who contribute their time to the success of the chapter and the industry as a whole, our chapter of the NEWH would not be where it is today.

As always, we welcome any suggestions for ideas, sponsorships, and partnerships throughout the year. If you would like to join a committee or get more involved, please do not hesitate to contact me or another board member with your interest.

In the spirit of networking,

Jason Stock, LEED AP President, NEWH Washington DC Metro Chapter

TIPS: 5 Ways To Do Good In Any Job

In 2009 we, FF&E Logistics, were installing the FF&E at the newly renovated Jefferson Hotel in DC. We received the baby grand piano for the 8th floor Thomas Jefferson suite, we quickly ascertained that the piano would not fit in the elevator, nor could we carry it up the stairs. So, to the inevitable nerve racking option of using a crane to put it in through a window. The day came, a Saturday, a very windy day at that. The crane arrived, a team on the ground organized the wrapping and hooking up whilst another team attended the 8th floor window to watch, and subsequently guide the piano in. The crane started up and the piano began its journey, the wind played its part in wracking our nerves, passers-by stopped to watch, slowly, slowly the crane driver guided the piano towards the window, a little sway here, a little sway there, could we do it? one of our team (yes, Mark Shear, the ever brave Mark Shear) leaned precariously out of the window with a hook to grab the rope and pull the piano to the window's entrance, the wind seemed to escalate, but, undaunted, Mark pulled the piano to the window entrance where more hands cajoled it in, in it came, quickly unwrapped it was set in place, a cheer from the pavement, smiling faces inside the suite. A marvelous feat you say…...Yup, much self congratulation, but that lasted only a few moments until, "what, you're kidding, right?" "Nope, I mean it, I don't really like it in here, let's take it down and put it in the ground floor bar......." Oh well, owner's prerogative

- Steve Shear, FF&E Logistics

Our most memorable moment was....having our booth contents show up 20 minutes before the 2012 NEWH Regional Tradeshow started, getting it completed just in time to have the BEST trade show we've ever had! What incredible attendees! Can't wait to do it again!

- Cindy Andrews, Sunbrite Outdoor Furniture

My most memorable moment was riding around the golf course during the 2011 NEWH Tournament, covering all of the action and meeting the “who’s who” in hospitality! A day I will always remember. The video recap is one of my favorites! http://youtu.be/V4dbVGOmd1g

- Kristyn Ivey, kristynivey.com | portfolioenvy.com

My most memorable moment was when I attended the 2008 HOSPY awards in Las Vegas. I bid on and won the auction for lunch with Interior Design Icon, Roger Thomas! The bid amount of $2,500 went to the NEWH Scholarship fund. We had inspiring conversations and at the end of the meal, Roger picked up the tab! A great moment I will never forget. - Mandy Li, Mandy Li Collection

One of my most memorable moments is when I attended the NEWH Leadership Conference in 2011. I met so many interesting people from all over the country and the key note speakers were fascinating, especially the developer of Milwaukee’s Iron Horse Hotel and personally meeting the CEO of Virgin Hotels, David Cush.

- Corinne Ritsick, Ritsick Design Associates, LLC

My favorite memories of NEWH would probably be a tie between the tent party at the Virginia Gold Cup in

about 2000 and being two feet away from Tiger Woods at the AT&T National at Congressional CC

about 2009. Great memories! - Kim Swanson, K.D. Swanson and Associates, LLC

We pinged our membership, Facebook and LinkedIn followers to capture their most memorable hospitality moments. Here is what they had to say…

2010 Through some luncheons at the NEWH (I believe it was in VA) a few folks (Corrine R. /Ailene W.) came up with the idea to renovate a section of St-Anns Infant Maternity Ward. The new restroom facilities allow maximum privacy for the younger population of St. Ann’s. Approximately 30 children, from infants to 12 year-olds, will benefit from the newly renovated space—complete with two child-level sinks, two stalls with doors, and space for a full-size, ADA-accessible bathtub and sink. Here’s a link to a release on the renovation. Seeing the children’s smiles the day we cut the ribbon was a definite highlight!  http://www.firstfinish.net/news/first-finish-provides-pro-bono-construction-st-anns

Tamar Marino (pictured above)

L’Academie de CuisineTamar Romero Marino grew up in a small town in Northern New Jersey and always imagined herself eventually working at a magazine or in fashion. While in college, she met a friend whose passion was cooking and agriculture. Tamar's friend recommended that she read Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma, a book that changed the way she thought about food. Tamar started paying attention to what she ate and how food is raised or harvested. Since graduating from college about five years ago she volunteered on organic farms in Catalonia, worked in a restaurant and wrote a food blog, “Basque Fed,” while living in San Sebastian, Spain, and interned at the food magazine, Saveur, in New York City. From 2010-2011, Tamar made the decision to go L'Academie de Cuisine for a certificate in the pastry arts and worked full-time as the pastry assistant to Chef Douglas Hernandez at Bibiana Osteria-Enoteca in Washington, DC. She is currently working as a line cook at Cashion's Eat Place in Adams Morgan and volunteers one day per week in pastry at surrounding DC restaurants.

The mission of the Washington DC Metro Chapter is to bring hospitality professionals and students together to promote excellence and leadership in the industry through education, mentoring, promotion and awareness of sustainable design and building, networking opportunities and the awarding of scholarships.

The pastry pictured above is an Opera Cake, which is a very classic French cake. By definition, it is a layer cake made using almond cake, referred to as Joconde, that is soaked in coffee-flavored simple syrup, and whose layers of cake are separated by alternating layers of coffee-flavored buttercream and chocolate ganache. There is no limit to the number of layers that this cake can have, but it must feature these flavors. Finally, the top of this cake is always covered in a thin layer of chocolate ganache, however the sides of the cake remain untouched.

1. Privacy, Privacy, Privacy. Place the spa in a quiet or serene location, and make the most of any natural views or vistas the site has to offer.

2. Right Place, Right Time. Avoid locating the spa in proximity to other public areas such as the restaurant, meeting rooms or business functions; the journey to and from the spa should be an experience in and of itself.

3. Treat Me Right. Place back-of-house and support spaces near or within the treatment zones, where the guest experience and service-related functions interact but are not seen.

4. Part and Parcel. Design the spa as an integral part of the resort or hotel—a chapter or a continuation of the same story, and not just a luxurious addition or world apart.

5. Soul Immersion. Climate permitting, incorporate outdoor paths that lead from the lockers and lounges to treatment rooms.

6. Sensory Sensation. Use a color palette and materials to stimulate and enlighten the senses as the guests begin their retreat and escape.

7. Mood Maker. Exceptionally appropriate lighting, tranquil water elements, and serene landscaping should work in harmony to create a place of sanctuary.

8. Public-Privacy Protection. Create a clear demarcation pattern for spa guests from locker rooms to treatment areas without crossing highly public spaces.

9. What’s the Hook? In urban settings or locations where the connection to the outdoors is not possible, an iconic, signature element can serve as the draw and allure for the spa.

10. Did You Hear That? While studying your wall, floor, and ceiling assemblies, don’t overlook HVAC systems, lights, and equipment noise. Water features, music, and “white noise” will assist in providing the quiet that the guest will remember.

You may not think that you can control the actions of the company you work for, but there are a few simple ways you can shift the way your employer does business--for the better:

Change the way your company buys “stuff.”

Start with something simple like paper, see if you can find your company a better alternative, and then continue, one purchasing decision at a time.

Make something efficiently good.

Every industry is filled with small design flaws that produce extra waste, that are unnecessary, and that drain energy, time, and resources. Rethink the potential of this waste and repurpose it for good all while making it more efficient.

Be an industry translator.

Every industry has a language, a lexicon, and a way of thinking. You can be a translator. Reach out to a community group that is working to change something in your industry and present yourself as a translator willing to help.

Ask good questions.

It could be as simple as asking a supplier about their labor practices or asking a partner what they are doing to be more environmentally friendly. Ask the question and watch them scramble to find an answer and keep your business.

Get your company to go carbon neutral.

Companies are actually saving money by making processes more efficient and converting buildings to higher standards. Tell your boss and other departments you are interested in pushing this forward in the company. You may end up the hero saving the company money, while doing some good.
