Our mission has always been the advancement of law enforcement K-9 professionals and the industry which tirelessly supports our daily operations on the street. From the beginning, we had a vision to bring the sharpest K-9 trainers from across the United States and abroad together under one roof for one powerful training conference. The humble gathering of a couple hundred K-9 handlers has inspired hundreds more to join us and we continue to grow larger each year. From our launch with Police K-9 Magazine to our independent orbit with HITS Training & Consulting, we continue to lead the police K-9 industry from the front. Jeff BarrettWith 24 years of police K-9 experience, Jeff has tracked down every type of violent fugitive imaginable. By far one of the most dangerous conditions we’re faced with today is deploying a police dog to track in a rural/woodland environment. This class examines the mur-ders of Deputy Sheriff Matt Williams and K-9 DiOGi in intricate detail and how their deaths have initiated a national movement toward advanced tactical training for K-9 tracking and woodland operations.

Laz CabreraLazaro “Laz” Cabrera is the training director for Police Service Dogs, Inc. Lazaro became a police K-9 handler in 1998. He is a USPCA six-time police dog regional champion and a four-time police dog nation-al champion. His 14 years as a police dog vendor and trainer have given him the opportunity to train with some of the world’s best dog trainers. For this reason, Laz has developed a passion for the development of young “green” police dogs. The successful future police

K-9 handler will be one who has the knowledge to train a green police dog from “Zero to Hero” using non-conflicting, modern dog training techniques.

Laz will be presenting The Development of a Young Dual Purpose Police Dog.

Ron ClowardRon Cloward retired from the Modesto Police De-partment in August 2011 as a Lieutenant. Ron worked three different police K-9s and was the canine unit sergeant and trainer. When promoted to lieutenant, he remained the trainer and unit commander. Ron lives in Modesto, CA. with his wife of 33 years and his family. He owns his own K-9 training and consulting business, Top Dog Police K-9 Training and Consulting.

Ted DausProsecutor Ted Daus will look at three unique settings in which K-9 handlers may find themselves questioning the legal boundaries of drug sniffs. He will also address the legal limitations and applica-tions of a drug dog for administrative searches inside

a jail or prison. Ted covers the cautionary legalities and limits for providing your local probation officers with drug sniffs of a defendant’s home and the legal pros and cons for not only searching schools, but the best

ways to handle the school’s request, from a legal standpoint. Additionally, Ted will cover many recent U.S. Search & Seizure laws. Ted will be presenting Administrative Searches & Supreme Court Case Law Update as well as 2014 Drug Dog Legal Update.

Dave DornDave has worked in law enforcement for over 16 years. During the past 14 years, he has worked for a sheriff ’s department in the East Bay of California, where he currently handles, trains and supervises as a Sergeant in the K-9 unit. Dave focused most of his training on specializing in detection dog training and handling for patrol and corrections. David is a California POST Certified Canine Team Evaluator, as well as a WSPCA Judge and Certifying Official. Dave currently handles

two working dogs, an explosive detection dog and a narcotic detection dog.

Dave will be presenting two classes: Explosive Detection K-9 Unit- Training &Utilization for the Real World and K-9s in Custody

Cameron FordCameron Ford has been in K-9 for 18 years, first serv-ing as a Military Working Dog Handler and Trainer (USAF). In 1999 Cameron was invited to attend the German police dog handler school (Deinthundefurher schule) in Eckenbach, Germany and is one of a few Americans to have attended this program. Cameron has served as a National and State Patrol/Narcotic/Explosive Instructor as well as trained with a variety of units from Special Forces to foreign Police K-9 units

such as the German Polizei, Dutch Polite, Aruban Polis and the Jordanian Counter Terrorism Unit.

Joey Kretschmer Officer Kretschmer began his career with the Arizona Department of Public Safety in April of 2007. He imme-diately gained an interest in highway interdiction, and began focusing on interdicting drugs and illegal pro-ceeds on the highways of southern Arizona. In October of 2011, he transferred to the DPS Southern K-9 Unit. Officer Kretschmer works with “Gogo”, a 2-year - old German shepherd trained in narcotics detection and patrol. Bill LewisSergeant Bill Lewis II (retired) comes to HITS 2014 as a critical thinker whose forthright and sobering look at some of our most common and reoccurring issues should make us all evaluate how we operate daily. From the perspective of hindsight, we can clearly see the road map to a better, safer and profoundly more effective K-9 industry. By using real world experience and by examining many of the cases that have affected us all, Bill Lewis is able to pattern a better solution to

avoid the trouble that faces us daily in the law enforcement K-9 realm.

Steve HearthSteve is a 13-year veteran of the Polk County Sheriff ’s Office in Lakeland, Fla. and in his 18th year of law enforcement. Steve is a Florida Department of Law Enforcement certified K-9 Trainer and Evaluator, and a Level 1 National Trainer for the USPCA. He has previ-ously taught for Canine Development Group and the Kenneth C. Thompson Institute of Public Safety. Steve is a current member of USPCA and NAPWDA and works the Belgian Malinois that he raised from a puppy

who is trained in patrol and narcotics detection.

Mark HinesMark Hines is internationally recognized as the KONG Company’s behavior and training specialist. In his role with the KONG Company over the past 10 years, Mark has worked with veterinarians, behaviorists, breeders, shelters and a wide variety of trainers. He also provides training and consultation for law enforcement and mili-tary K-9 units.

Chris JakubinChris Jakubin was part of the Military Working Dog Program for over 28 years. Today, Chris is the head trainer for Ruidoso Malinois where he is training Nar-cotic/Explosive detector dogs for civilian and govern-ment agencies and on the seminar circuit where he is instructing classes in patrol and detection work.

Steven LoweSteve Lowe has spent the past 17 years of his career mastering his K-9 skills. Steve is a nationally rec-ognized K-9 trainer and certifying official with the NPCA and is the past president of the Arizona Law Enforcement Canine Association. Steve’s expertise in K-9 training has been diversified into various K-9 disciplines, including narcotics, explosives, curren-cy, weapons and cellphone detection. Steve has been instrumental in assisting correctional programs that

incorporate service dogs into strike and tactical teams for patrol, handler protection and cell extractions.

Rob LukasonRob became a Border Patrol agent in 1996.In 2004, Lukason transferred to the Tucson, Ariz., Border Patrol sector where he was selected to be the sector’s canine coordinator and is responsible for the training and certification of the Tucson sector’s 80 de-tection canine teams. In 2006, Lukason was promoted to a staff position at CCEP.

Jeff MeyerJeff Meyer is a 24-year veteran of the Denver Police Department. He has been a K-9 handler for over 17 years and has extensive experience working in a large metropolitan police agency. He has conducted more than 1,000 area searches for suspects which resulted in hundreds of apprehensions.

Jeff began Police K-9 Magazine in 2005.

Ray NeelyRay is currently a Senior Special Agent assigned to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) National Canine Division as a project officer, instructor and K-9 handler. Ray was one of the founding members of ATF’s original Canine Operations Branch in 1997. Since that time, he has traveled to over 30 states in support of major investigations, special events and dignitary protection details.

Alexis Newman, DVMAfter graduating from Iowa State University in 1998, Dr. Newman completed her year-long surgical and emergency internship at the California Animal Hospital in West Los Angeles. She practiced emergency and critical care medicine in referral hospitals for 15 years, and also served as medical director for 5 years, before starting her own business.

Ken PavlickKen Pavlick has over 30 years of experience in handling, training and judging police dogs in almost every facet (patrol, swat, explosive, narcotic, SAR) His K-9 background ranges from training and supervising a 27-dog section in the U.S. Air Force to handling a patrol/narcotic detection canine for Riverside County Sheriff ’s Office. He built the Canyon County (Idaho) Sheriff ’s Office K-9 unit from one dog to 15 teams.

Aaron PetermanOfficer Aaron Peterman is a 16-year veteran of the Lakeland, Fla. Police Department. Aaron’s experience includes working as a SWAT operator and in the street crimes unit conducting narcotics investigations as well as operating in an undercover capacity. In 2006, Aaron became a handler of a dual-certified patrol/narcotics canine.

Aaron will be presenting Tactical Police Decoy

Grant RiederSergeant Grant Rieder is the Canine Unit Supervisor and Canine Trainer. With over 17 years of related experience in this specialized area of policing, Sgt. Rieder is responsible for the basic training of the General Service Dog (GSD) and detector dogs as-signed to him. In addition he conducted basic certi-fication, monthly upkeep and annual re-certification training for all WRPS dog teams as well as for canine teams from Guelph, Hamilton and West Grey Police.

Grand will be presenting Hard Surface Tracking.

Mike RitlandMike Ritland has trained hundreds of working dogs and specializes in protection dog training, military dog training, police dog training and guard dog training. Prior to founding Trikos International, Mike was a multi-purpose K-9 trainer for U.S. Navy SEAL Teams. He served 12 years active duty as a U.S. Navy SEAL and is a disabled combat veteran.

Brad SmithBrad Smith retired from the West Covina Police De-partment in southern California in June 2010 after 30 years of service.
