What is the Study of History all about?History repeats itself. We all know the phrase. But what does it really mean, and why does it matter? History examines the past in order to provide an explanation of the present—how we got where we are and where we are potentially headed.

As a History student, you’ll learn not only about great leaders of the past. You’ll also learn what ordinary people believed and valued—how they lived, worshipped, worked, fought and died. You’ll have the opportunity to take thematic and regional courses in Ancient, Medieval and Modern history from the geographic areas that shaped our world today.

History CoursesThe Department offers a major in History for the 40-course Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Arts and Science (BASc) degree programs. Alternatively, you can choose to do a General Major in the Humanities and select History as one of your three streams. You can also opt for History as your BA major for the Combined BA/BEd or BA/BMgt programs.

The Department also participates in the delivery of Canadian Studies, as well as Urban and Regional Studies. Canadian Studies focuses on developing a deeper appreciation of our Canadian identity and issues across a wide range of disciplines. Urban and Regional Studies focuses on the analysis of the physical, social, economic and political factors that shape our cities and regions.
