THE BEGINNING…

It all started in 1976 with the advent of Egypt’s “Era of Openness” as it is called; the era when trade boomed

in Egypt and investments in infrastructure projects underwent unprecedented and explosive growth, financed

by funds and loans from Europe and the US under the country’s Open door Policy. Projects in heavy industries, ranging from telecommunications to waste water, electrical power, cement, oil and gas and

petrochemicals multiplied, creating new market demands and presenting a golden business opportunity for transport and logistics companies of all types.

Keeping in line with its mission and reputation as a pioneer in the transport and logistics industry in Egypt,

EGYTRANS took the lead in serving this new market by establishing a department that specializes in

projects handling in 1980. From the start, the mission of the department was to bring the latest in engineering theory and practice to the logistics process.

The specialized projects handling department evolved since its inception to provide many services, enlarging

EGYTRANS’ business services scope to include conducting route surveys to determine the optimum

transportation routes and methods as well as logistical studies, transportation planning and technical design.

The first project handled was the Abu Sultan Power station which was carried out in cooperation with General

Electric of USA. Afterwards, the specialized projects’ handling team at EGYTRANS carried out the handling of

incoming cargo for the Water Treatment Stations in collaboration with Torin Corporation. Success in these

projects established EGYTRANS as a major projects logistics supplier in Egypt and attracted many clients.

LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIPS WITH CUSTOMERS Because in EGYTRANS, the customer always comes first and the aim is not just to meet but to exceed

customer needs and expectations, EGYTRANS’s customers always come back, and repeat business from

long-term customers is the norm and ultimate goal in EGYTRANS. Examples are:

1. Hitachi Transport: For more than ten years, EGYTRANS has been the main logistics service provider for

Hitachi Transport in Egypt. The collaboration started with the Oyoun Moussa power station project and then expanded to include the Cairo West, Cairo North, Kuraimat and Ain Al-Sokhna power stations and the Maadi

pumping station.

2. Mitsubishi Corporation: The collaboration started in 2004 with the Cairo Metro 2nd phase, then the

Alexandria compost project and afterwards El Atf and Sidi Krir power plants.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT The project department started with 2 specialists but has now grown to include new talents, emphasizing teamwork for attaining the highest standards of professionalism and efficiency in project execution. Today,

the EGYTRANS Projects Department is structured as follows:

BUSINESS PARTNERS ABNORMAL LOAD ENGINEERING

To uphold its standards of excellence, EGYTRANS always chooses to partner with companies who are also

leaders in their fields. This is why it selected ALE in 1995, one of the largest specialized heavy lift transport

companies in the world. ALE has a long and extensive experience of more than 25 years in abnormal load handling. The partnership started with the transport of heavy cargo, mainly equipment, for the Sidi Krir

Polyethylene Plant in Amreya, Alexandria. Since then ALE has provided EGYTRANS with specialized

equipment that would help it handle cargo that weighed hundreds of tons: for example, the Girder which is used to carry heavy units with small volume to spread the weight on a wider transport area, and also the

special Gantry Cranes for temporary storage and installation on foundations. There is also the Nicholas

Hydraulic Low-bed which EGYTRANS uses for the transport of cargo weighing 300 tons and above.

ETAL

Another company born in the wake of the vast expansion in infrastructural investments and projects in Egypt is the Egyptian Transportation and Logistics Company ETAL which was established in 1984 by a consortium

joining EGYTRANS and a group of companies and local businessmen with long experience in the transport

industry. However, due to a conflict in strategies, EGYTRANS exited the consortium and sold its shares in

the early 90’s.

The main goal of the company from the start was the transport of cargo of exceptional weight and dimension. As a result, ETAL gradually accumulated considerable knowledge and expertise in this field and

became the market leader.

Owning a range of heavy transport equipment unmatched by any other heavy lift mover in Egypt, ETAL grew

and developed to be the only company that could cater to hauling heavy and oversized cargo for the projects

industry in Egypt. Therefore, to better position itself in the heavy cargo transport market, EGYTRANS

acquired ETAL in 1998, becoming the sole owner of the company.

After the acquisition, EGYTRANS carried out the renovation and development of all of ETAL’s transport

equipment and implemented the highest operational health and safety standards in all of its operations.

HISTORY OF PROJECTS Since the acquisition, EGYTRANS and its sister company ETAL, have both become ISO 9001, 14001 and

18001 certified and participated in the transport of more than 70 projects in various fields, the most

important of which are:

1982 SHOUBRA POWER STATION

EGYTRANS was nominated by Toshiba Corporation of Japan to deliver a total of nearly 20,000 FRT including

a 230 ton transformer to the station’s jobsite. This project introduced heavy haulage into the list of

EGYTRANS’s services. It also identified EGYTRANS as an expert in multimodal transport of heavy packages

as the transformer was first carried by ship up to Alexandria port then loaded onto a barge and delivered to the jobsite in Shoubra.

1986 EGYPTIAN PETROCHEMICALS COMPANY

Toyo Engineering Corporation of Japan was the nominated supplier for the Egyptian petrochemical plant in

Amreya, Alexandria, and thus appointed EGYTRANS to perform the local services for a total of 60,000 FRT.

Handling the heavy packages for this project required a study of the possible routes from Alexandria port to the project’s site in Amreya and incorporated the assistance of a qualified consultant in route reclamation and

civil works. Such studies were introduced by EGYTRANS and allowed the successful delivery of these

packages in compliance with the highest safety measures.

1988-1989 DAMANHOUR POWER STATION

Babcock-Wilcox of Canada, Sadelmi and GIE Ansaldo of Italy assigned the handling of this project’s cargo

which consisted of 35,000 FRT to EGYTRANS including heavy packages ranging from 70 to 210 tons in

weight from Alexandria port to the power station’s jobsite.

1990-1991 ASSIUT TRANSFORMER SUBSTATION

EGYTRANS was nominated by Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan to transport numerous heavy transformers

weighing up to 215 tons arriving at Alexandria Port. A floating crane was used to unload the transformers from the vessels onto barges which carried the transformers up to Assiut Jetty and were then loaded onto

low-bed trailers and delivered to the project site. Special Gantry Cranes were used to unload the units at the

Assiut Jetty from the barges and onto the trailers.

1996- 1998 SIDI KRIR PETROCHEMICALS COMPANY SIDPEC PLANTS

Due to the successful completion of the Egyptian Petrochemical Company plant, EGYTRANS was also

appointed by the same supplier to handle the transport of two petrochemical plants in Sidi Krir (ethylene

plant and polyethylene plant). These two projects demanded the use of highly specialized transport

equipment due to the abnormal dimensions and weights of the arriving cargo; thus, EGYTRANS required the

cooperation of ALE to supply the needed equipment.

This project marked EGYTRANS as a professional player in the heavy haulage industry as it incorporated the

delivery of the largest package ever to arrive to Egyptian ports, a fractionator with dimensions of 86m in

length, 5m in width and 5m in height, and a weight of 250 tons from Dekheila port up to the project’s jobsite. In addition, a 275 ton boiler and packages with abnormal dimensions of up to 9.8m in height and a total of

50,000 FRT were also delivered safely to the jobsite.

1996 -2001 CAIRO WASTE WATER PROJECT

EGYTRANS was assigned by local and international suppliers Misr Concrete J.V. of Egypt, Cogelec of UK,

Kier International of UK, Herbert Jones and Fru-Con Construction of USA to handle their supplies for establishing the Cairo Waste Water project phases from year 1996 to 2001. A total of 100,000 FRT of cargo

with abnormal packages were safely delivered by EGYTRANS from Alexandria port to the jobsite.

1999 OYOUN MOUSA SUBSTATION

Marubeni Corporation of Japan nominated EGYTRANS to transport approximately 20,000 FRT of cargo which

included 2 heavy transformers each weighing 260 tons and having dimensions of 7.8m in length, 3.7m in

width and 6.3m in height to the project’s jobsite in Sinai.

2002– 2004 LNG DAMIETTA

This was the first LNG natural gas liquefaction plant in Damietta and the largest in Egypt, owned and operated by the Spanish Egyptian Company (SEGAS).The construction of the plant, located North West of the

port of Damietta on the Mediterranean, began in September 2001 and was completed at the end of October

2004. This project was a challenge for EGYTRANS as it contained unprecedented volumes of cargo

simultaneously arriving to Damietta port. Assigned by MW Kellogg of UK, EGYTRANS had to coordinate and

handle approximately 3 chartered vessels per week with a total of 160,000 FRT during the project which included numerous heavy packages weighing up to 240 tons a package.

2004 - 2005 NUBARIYA POWER STATION

At the end of 2004, EGYTRANS was nominated by Siemens of Germany to handle the local logistics of

supplies arriving for the Nubariya Power Station. EGYTRANS successfully delivered large volumes of cargo

including 4 turbines (305 tons each) and 4 generators (300 tons each) to the project’s jobsite. Such haulage

required highly specialized studies to widen existing roads on the route and build new roads as a by-pass to overcome waterways and weak bridges along the way.

After the successful accomplishment of the above deliveries, EGYTRANS was appointed by STF of Italy in

collaboration with Dafara of Italy to handle the cargo for the extension, Nubariya III Plant, at the end of 2008

and beginning of 2009. Large volumes of pipes were delivered to a local site to be manufactured and assembled into 240 heavy harps which were then delivered to the Nubariya jobsite. Two heavy drums

weighing up to 160 tons were also safely delivered to the jobsite.

2004 ELNG IDKU PROJECT

This project is one of the largest gas condensation stations in Egypt until this day. As assigned by Bechtel of

US, volumes of 100,000 FRT were delivered by EGYTRANS for the 2 trains with large volumes of heavy lifts

(each LNG plant consists of one or more trains to compress natural gas into liquefied natural gas). 200 heavy

packages with weights up to 200 tons were safely delivered to the site in Idku, 50 km east of Alexandria.

2004 CAIRO METRO PROJECT

The Cairo Metro is the only full-fledged metro system in Africa. At the beginning, the system consisted of two

operational lines carrying around 700 million passengers a year. EGYTRANS successfully transported 80

wagons for the Cairo Metro Line 2 supplied by Mitsubishi of Japan, which connected Shoubra El Kheima to

Cairo University and then extended to Giza. It was the first line in history to have a tunnel going under the Nile.

2005 CAIRO NORTH POWER STATION

At the beginning of 2005, General Electric collaborated with EGYTRANS to deliver 18,000 FRT of cargo

which included 2 turbines 280 tons each, 2 generators 220 tons each and a boiler of 230 tons to the jobsite.

The route studies prepared by EGYTRANS demanded the repair and strengthening of 21 bridges along the

route from the port to the site.

Due to the heavy weight of the turbines and the capacity limitation of roads and bridges, EGYTRANS

requested ALE to supply the Girder for the safe haulage of the heavy packages, and this was the first time

such highly sophisticated transport equipment was used in Egypt.

2005-2006 NEW TALKHA POWER STATION

Siemens was nominated as a supplier of the electric equipment and assigned the logistics for the required

cargo to EGYTRANS. Huge volumes of cargo were received including two 305 ton generators, two 310 ton

turbines and 199 ton transformers with heights up to 5.15m.

Such packages required EGYTRANS to carry out route surveys and reclamation works to the roads and

bridges along the route from Damietta port to the site to overcome the abnormal dimensions and weights of

the cargo. An example of such works was digging 1 m under two bridges, Sherbeen Bridge and Farskor bridge.

2007 SUKARI GOLDEN MINE PROJECT

The Sukari gold project is located in the eastern desert of Egypt, approximately 23km South-West of Marsa

Alam, a coastal town near the Red Sea. It is recognized as Egypt's first large-scale gold mine. During the last

quarter of 2007, an agreement was made between EGYTRANS and the Pharaoh Gold Mines Company to

transport large volumes of break bulk, containers and four heavy motors 12meters long, 4 meters wide and 4

meters high and weighing 85 tons each from Alexandria port to the mine site in Marsa Alam.

2007 MISR BENI SUEF II CEMENT FACTORY PROJECT

This project was an extension of the Beni Suef Factory constructed in late 2000, which was also handled by

EGYTRANS with Fuller of USA. The new project’s scope was to construct 2 cement mills for the second

clinker production line. In collaboration with Polysius of USA, around 15,000 FRT of cargo were delivered including a 136 ton cement mill 11.95 m in length, 6.41m in width and 6.61m in height.

2007 – 2008 EGYPTIAN LINEAR ALKYL BENZENE COMPANY ELAB PROJECT

This project was handled by EGYTRANS in Collaboration with Woojin- GS of Japan. 100,000 FRT of cargo including heavy packages up to 200 tons were delivered and installed on their foundations at ELAB Plant

located in Wadi Al Kamar, South-West of Alexandria.

2008 PETROJET MAADIYA PROJECT

This project was the first of its kind to be executed in Egypt as it required the multimodal transport of 2 huge control units with dimensions 18m in length, 9m in width and 12m in height. The 2 units weighing 195 tons

each were delivered by sea up to Alexandria port, then loaded by EGYTRANS on barges to be delivered to

Maadiya port in collaboration with Agility of UK, Enppi and Petrojet.

2008 -2009 EL-ATF AND SIDI KRIR POWER STATIONS

These projects were successfully executed by EGYTRANS in collaboration with Ansaldo Energia and Aprile of

Italy and Global Logistics of Japan. These projects incorporated delivering similar cargo supplied by Mitsubishi

Heavy Industries and Toyota-Tsusho of Japan to the two power plant sites. Heavy abnormal packages

including a 390 ton Gas turbine, with dimensions 14m in length, 6m in width and 6m in height, and a 290 ton generator stator with dimensions 13.9m in length, 4.6m in width and 5m in height were safely delivered to

each jobsite.

Reinforcing four bridges; Tabiya, Maadiya, Mahmoudia and Saafan bridges, along the route using the state of the art Bridges Isolation technique, never before applied in Egypt, was the biggest challenge for the two

projects. The bridges were isolated with the use of barges equipped with hydraulic jacking systems to pass

on the weight of the heavy packages from the bridges to the water, reducing their deflection to the minimum of 3 mms. Before effecting the transportation, 2 dynamic tests were made to insure the safety of the

operation.

2008 -2009 CAIRO WEST POWER STATION

In March 2008, EGYTRANS signed a contract with Sumitomo Corporation and Babcock Hitachi Industries

Ltd. to handle 48,000 FRT of their supplies arriving at Alexandria and Port Said ports. This project included delivering two oversized drums, 202 tons each, to the project’s jobsite.

2009 SOKHNA CEMENT FACTORY PROJECT

This project was handled by EGYTRANS for El-Sewedy Cement to deliver containers and over-dimensional

cargo to El-Sewedy factory in Ain El-Sokhna. Cargo of approximately 15,000 FRT including a 132 ton cement

mill were delivered safely to the jobsite.

2009 ZAAFARANA WINDMILL FARMS PROJECT

The Zaafarana Wind Farm was the first wind farm in Egypt to produce green energy. Gamesa and Proyectos

of Spain assigned EGYTRANS to deliver 360 over-dimensional complete wind mill components including

blades, hubs and nacelles (which transmit motion to the blades) to the project’s site in Zaafarana.

2009 KURAIMAT SOLAR POWER PLANT

This project was executed in collaboration with Iberdrola of Spain. Three modules of weights up to 180 tons, a 135 ton steam turbine, a 110 ton generator and two transformers were among the heavy packages

delivered to Kuraimat jobsite. With this project, EGYTRANS managed to establish itself as a leading logistics

service provider to the promising new and renewable energy industry in Egypt.

2010 ABU QIR POWER PLANT

EGYTRANS signed a contract with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan in November 2010 to transport a

total project volume of 23,000 FRT to the project jobsite in Abu Qir, Alexandria until October 2011. So far, 8

condenser shells of abnormal dimensions up to 6.9m in height and 45 tons in weight and 2 heaters of 65 tons

each have been delivered safely to the station to the client’s satisfaction. Also for the same project,

EGYTRANS was assigned by LG of Korea to transport approximately 4,000 FRT within the project’s duration.

3 heavy skids weighing up to 92 tons have already been delivered safely to the project’s site.
