Delve into HistoryThe first evidence of human settlement in the Kirchheim area dates back more than 7000 years ago. In the 13th century Duke Konrad I von Teck granted the town charter. Thereafter, the town experienced a strong upturn. When building work began on the state fortress in 1538, an increasing number of merchants, civil servants and soldiers made their way to Kirchheim. In the Great Fire of 1690, almost all the buildings were reduced to ash and rubble. Many of the half-timbered houses that can still be seen today originate from the subsequent reconstruction period. Kirchheim unter Teck experienced an-other period of prosperity after the establish-ment the wool market. From 1819 onwards, the town was the largest wool trading centre in the Kingdom of Württemberg. The Industrial Revolu-tion led to further economic growth, with many new businesses being founded.

Kornhaus ‘Granary’

The Kornhaus was built in the 16th century in order to stock supplies, mainly grain, for soldiers in the event of a siege of Kirchheim unter Teck state fortress. For the construction of the outside walls local sandstone was used. As a result, the building was only internally destroyed by the great fire of 1690.The Kornhaus was rebuilt to its current appearance by 1696.Today the Kornhaus is home to the Municipal Historical Museum and Municipal Fine Arts Gallery.

Access can be difficult for people with mobility impairment. There is a step to the entrance, however a ramp can be fitted. Day time contact is the Deanery (no 26) for assistance.

The Kornhaus is easily accessible with an external ramp and internal accessible lift and toilet.

The walk’s starting point is Martinskirche, consecrated to Saint Martin of Tour, like many early churches in this area. It is assumed that the church’s origins were a 7th century wooden construction. This was followed by a small stone building that was extended to a three-nave basilica in the 12th century. During the 14th and 15th centuries St Martin’s Church most likely obtained today’s outside appearance.In the Great Town Fire the church was partly destroyed. However, the choir and its vaulting remained intact. The rebuilding of the church after the Great Fire tried to achieve it’s former appearance.

From 1540 to 1909 this building served as a grammar school and was one of the few to survive the Great Town Fire of 1690.In 1836 Max Eyth was born here, his father being the director of the grammar school at the time. Max Eyth was a well known German writer and engineer, who contributed to the development of the first steam plough at John Fowler’s of Leeds, England. Today the house is the seat of the Municipal Literary Museum and of the Kirchheim Tourist Information.

Spital ‘Hospital’The Spital was founded in 1360 by Duke Friedrich von Teck and, thanks to several donation, rapidly grew to be the richest Spital in Württemberg. It was a charitable institution caring for elderly, sick and poor people.The Kirchheim Spital buildings comprised a whole quarter of the town, only two of them remaining to the present day. The main building of the complex dates back to 1692 and is now known as «Spital». It dates back to 1692. After the great Town Fire it served as the interim town hall. Since the 18th century the building has been mainly used for educational purposes. Since 1974 the Volkshochschule (adult education centre) has been based here.

Krautmarkt – Gänsemarkt - Alleenring‘Cabbage Market – Geese Market – Allenring’

The market rights of Kirchheim unter Teck dates back to the 11th century. Different goods were sold at different market places in town. At the beginning of the 19th century the cabbage

market (Krautmarkt) found its place on the edge of the town centre due to the cabbages´ strong odour. Today at the Krautmarkt there is an underground parking garage and the building houses the public library. Next to the Krautmarkt was the Gänsemarkt – geese market, and there were special markets for wood, straw, pottery, cattle, horses, pigs and wool and of course victuals. The Alleenring - a ring road around the town centre - also came into being after the demolition of the town walls. Chestnut trees were planted along the road, thus making Kirchheim unter Teck known as the «Kastanienstadt» (chestnut town).

Stadthalle, Teckcenter und Postplatz‘Municipal Festivity Hall, Teckcenter shopping precinct and Post Office Square’From 1864 to 1975 post office square was Kirchheim station square. Following the demolition of the station buildings the Teckcenter was built to house the municipal festivity hall, a shopping precinct and a large car park.The topic of rail travel is echoed in the abstract artworks on the stairways and in the foyer of the festivity hall.The new station on the edge of today’s town centre was opened in 1975. Kirchheim unter Teck has been part of Stuttgart’s public rail network since 2009.

Fabrikgebäude Otto Ficker‘Otto Ficker Factory Building’

In 1858 Albert Ficker opened a small workshop which his sons developed into a wholesale paper business.In 1894, the Ficker family had a new factory building erected featuring a rail siding that connected the factory with the Kirchheim unter Teck rail station. The architect of the Ficker factory building was Philipp Jakob Manz, a pioneer of industrial architecture, who designed a number of buildings in Kirchheim unter Teck in this era.

Hain der Kulturen

In medieval times this was the site of a moated manor house which fell into state ownership in the 15th century. After the dismantling of the house, the site served as the gardens and horse riding facilities of Kirchheim castle. For some time there even was a small Opera House here. In the 20th century it was the site of a building of the teacher’s training college. In 2014 the Hain der Kulturen – «grove of cultures» was opened. There you will find trees that are typical for the countries and regions where the different cultural groups living in Kirchheim unter Teck come from.

Altes Forstamt‘The Old Forestry Office’Before the Great Town Fire this site was the home of the local school. The building was re-constructed following the Great Town Fire of 1690. The half-timbered building was then seat of the ducal winery.Later on the house was the residence of the castle administrator and of other high ranking ducal servants. In the 20th century the state forestry office occupied the building.Since 2006 it has been privately owned.

Schloss‘Castle’

The Dukes Ulrich and Christoph von Württemberg had Kirchheim unter Teck castle build as part of the state fortress between 1538 and 1560.

The Württemberg Dukes used the castle as a base for hunting in the nearby forests, and at times as their residency. Time and again, the castle also served as the residency of widows of the Württemberg ducal family. Famous residents include Franziska von Hohenheim and Duchess Henriette von Württemberg. Especially Duchess Henriette is well remembered in Kirchheim having initiated the town’s hospital and the fire brigade. Today the Castle houses the Castle Museum and a teacher’s training college. Two halls can be rented as a venue for receptions and concerts.

Wachthaus‘Guardhouse’

Up to the beginning 19th century there was a guardhouse at each of the four town gates. This guardhouse is the only one to survive the demolition of the town’s fortifications.In the 20th century the building served as the police station. Since 1975 it has been used as a restaurant. During the summer season, the large beer garden invites you to stop for refreshments.

Altes Haus‘Old House’Erected in front of the upper gate as an inn in 1538 the Altes Haus was one of the largest and most magnificent private buildings of Kirchheim unter Teck.From 1688 it was the seat of the Ducal Forester.In 1902 the town of Kirchheim bought the house and used it as a school building. The present private owner took great care to restore the property with its interesting half-timbered construction.

Rossmarkt‘Horse Market’

The square evolved in 1861 by filling up of the town moat. It was subsequently used as a horse market square, but other markets such as a pottery market and the straw market were held here. A horse statue commemorates the square as being a horse market in the past.In the second half of the 20th century, the square was redesigned and is now used as a car parking area. But also cafés have found their homes here and the square has become a popular meeting point.

Heidenschaft

The Heidenschaft is located in the south- eastern quarter of the town centre. The name “Heidenschaft” goes back to the 16th century and indicates that the inhabitant did not adhere to the Christian belief. It is assumed that up to 1494 Jewish People lived here. However, there are no written or archeological proof. After 1494 Jewish people were not allowed to reside in Württemberg. It was only in the 19th century that Jewish people returned to Kirchheim unter Teck. Up to the present day, many small tradesmen’s houses can be found here, houses with low ceilings, small rooms and only small or no yards around them. In the 2nd half of the 20th century many of these houses were demolished and replaced by modern buildings.

Brandstraße‘Great Fire Lane’In this lane, the Great Town Fire of 1690 started and has ever since been called ‘Brandstraße’. The Fire spread and went on to destroy most of the town centre. Only the choir and the outer walls of St Martin’s Church, the Max-Eyth-Haus, the palace and the thite barn remained undamaged. Today there is just one building at the northern side of the lane housing a bank.A relief at the wall remembers the devastating fire of 1690. The backyard ist called Kunsthöfle and during the summer season open-air concerts take place here.

Marktplatz‘Market Square’

Before the Great Town Fire, the town hall was situated on today’s market square. It was not rebuilt at this site, but moved to the site of the former citizenry’s house (Bürgerhaus). The lot remained vacant up to the present day and is being used as a food market place on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The basin of the fountain dates back to 1776 and is adorned with eight cast iron plates made by the Württemberg state iron foundry at Königsbronn. The plates show the coat of arms of Duke Carl Eugen of Württemberg and one of the town Kirchheim unter Teck on either side. Moreover, there are different allegorical illustrations.

Rathaus‘Town Hall’

The building was erected between 1722 and 1724 on the site of the burned down citizenry’s house. It is one of the finest half-timbered town halls in the country. Just 15 years after municipal administration moved in, the timber framing was deemed old fashioned and was plastered. It was not until the 20th century that the elaborate timber framing was exposed once again. The tower can be climbed during a special guided tour offered by the tourist information office.

Adler-Apotheke‘Eagle Pharmacy’

The pharmacy is just one example of the town’s many exposed timber framed houses.Ever since 1690, when the house was rebuilt after the Great Town fire, it has been used as a pharmacy. In the 19th century the pharmacy was named Adler-Apotheke (Eagle Pharmacy).The now bricked-up round arched doors on Widerholtstraße were once the entrances to the extensive arched cellars used to store wine grown in the local wine yards up to 1905.

Stiftshaus‘Noble Womens’ Convent’In the 15th century this building belonged to the Adelberg monastery and was used as a basis for the monastery’s trading and fiscal business in town. After 1690 it was rebuild with the striking baroque façade we still see today. The living rooms were adorned with splendid stucco ceilings also in the baroque style. From the 17th century up to 1845 the building served as a home to unmarried women of the families of the Kocher Reichsritterschaft (Kocher Imperial Knights). Today it is privately owned.

Vogthaus‘The Bailiff’s Residence’

When the building was first erected in 1543, parts of the town walls were used for its construction. This is also the only site where remnants of the old town wall can still be found. For the greater part of time up to 1732 this building served as Kirchheim unter Teck bailiff’s seat. However, it was owned at times by the state, the town and different bailiffs themselves. From 1852 to 1964 a convent for elderly widowed and unmarried ladies had its home here.Today the building houses the Familienbildungs- stätte (center for family education). The gardens were newly laid out in 2008 featuring wooden fencing to remember its former usage as a kitchen garden.

The building is wheelchair accessible, as are the toilets, but only during opening hours. There is a accessible toilet on the ground floor.

Bastion beim Kloster‘Bastion by the Nunnery’The bastion at the north eastern side of the old town centre was part of the town’s fortifications from the 16th century.The town wall was 3.5 km long and was given additional protection by four town gates and eight bastions. The vast platform served as an artillery base. Today the Bastion hosts cultural and political events.

Katholische Kirche St. Ulrich‘St Ulrich Roman Catholic Church’

After the Reformation, Württemberg and thus Kirchheim unter Teck was protestant area.As a result of the industrialization more and more Roman Catholic people settled in Kirchheim unter Teck. In 1876 they were allocated the former castle chapel for services. In 1907 they were able to have their own church built. It was consecrated to St Ulrich in 1908. The brick construction reflects Romanesque and early French styles.

Ehemaliges Dominikanerinnen-Kloster ‘Former Dominican Nunnery’

Founded by Duke Konrad I. von Teck in 1235, the Dominican Nunnery of Kirchheim unter Teck was situated outside the town walls on today’s Alleenstraße and north of it. The once affluent nunnery was shut down after the Reformation. When in 1539 the town fortifications were built, the convent church and a number of convent buildings were dismantled. Barbara Gonzaga the first Duchess of Württemberg is believed to have been buried in the convent’s church. On the site of the former nunnery we find today the local tax authorities. The impressive half-timbered building dates from 1626 and was then the seat of the property’s administration (Klosterhofmeisterei).

Alter Friedhof mit Friedhofskapelle ‘Old Cemetery and Cemetery Chapel’With the construction of the town fortification in the 16th century St Martin’s Church cemetery was moved outside the town center. In the 19th and 20th centuries the cemetery was extended again and again. The cemetery chapel was erected in 1903 with the help of a donation from Kirchheim born Jakob Friedrich Schöllkopf who emigrated to the US and had made his fortune there.

Freihof

The name of the Freihof has its origins in the tax exemption of the owners’ of this manor house. In front of the town’s Lower Gate the buildings of the Freihof can be identified as a separate entity up to the present day. In the centre of the complex is the Schlössle (little palace) dating back to the 13th century. Today it is home to the music school. The Freihof also houses a primary school, a newly built secondary school and the municipal archive.

Dekanat‘The Deanery’The grand half-timbered building was erected in 1692 following the Great Fire. Interestingly, the building’s northern wall is also part of the town wall.In the 19th century the building underwent extensive renovation and now accomo-dates the administration of the Kirchheim unter Teck Protestant deanery.

Diakonat - Altes Pfarrhaus ‘The Old Rectory’

The rectory was built after the Great Town Fire of 1690 for the deacon of St Martin’s Church. Subsequent to the separation of the functions of dean and Protestant town minister it became the rectory. Today, only the Albert Knapp Saal, a hall on the ground floor is used by the Protestant Parish. The building’s upper floors are home to the finance department and town treasury.
