PLATE HEAT EXCHANGER
ConstructionCorrosion resistant thin plates of stainlesssteel, titanium etc., are pressformed into heattransfer plates. A sealgasket is attached ontoeach plate. These plates are suspended fromguide bar and bolted together between a fixedframe and a movable frame. Constant spacingbetween the plates allow the fluid to flowthrough. The inlet and outlet connections arefixed onto either the fixed frame or the mov-able frame.
Heat transfer platesEach heat transfer plate is corrugatedto various patterns to increase itsstrength and heat transfer area.Furthermore, the corrugation createshigh turbulence and thereby achievehigh heat transfer coefficient. The plateis provided with passage hole on eachcorner. Each plate is tight-sealed witha gasket fitted in its peripheral groove.
Flow channelThe plates are divided into A-plate and B-plate, and a passage is formed be-tween these plates. The high temperature fluid flows alternately and in the op-posite direction of the other fluid. Thus high efficient transfer of heat isachieved through these plates.A-plate when reversed would become B-plate. As such only one type of platecan be used as A-plate and B-plate for most models.

High performanceThe overall heat transfer co-efficient (U-value) ranges from4,000 to 9,000 W(m2C) in water application, since the platecorrugation provides high turbulent flow. This is one of the rea-sons why plate heat exchanger is so high heat transfer coeffi-cient. In addition, this turbulent flow also acts to prevent scalesfrom the plate surface.
Less installation spaceThe lightweight and compact construction reduces the instal-lation space and the weight to 1/4 and 1/3 of shell & tube heatexchanger respectively. In addition, lightweight and thin heat-ing plate with less liquidhold facilitates the installation work. The plate heat exchanger can be disassembled for cleaningwithout piping work, while the shell & tube heat needs a addi-tional space for drawing out the tube bundle.
Prevention of liquid inter-mixingSpecial consideration is taken into the gasket so as to protectit from direct attack by liquid. Furthermore, the gasket is ofdouble-seal type so as to permit liquid draining outside theexchanger even in a case of liquid leak caused by its deterio-ration.
Easy change of performanceAccording to change of the treating capacity, the heat transfersurface area can be incremented/de-cremented by unscrew-ing the plate clamping bolts and increasing or reducing thenumber of plates.
Steam available as heat sourceThe use of synthetic rubber gasket of special compositionpermits to use steam as heat source, i.e operating tempera-ture range up to 180C maximum.
Two fluids temperaturedifference up to its extremely closeThe construction which permits heat exchanging in perfectcounter-current flow with very high heat transfer efficiencymakes it possible to utilize the difference between hot fluidand cold fluid up to 1C and less.(Refer to P.19 SUPER HIGH NTU PLATE.)
Since developed in 1953, HISAKA Plate Heat Exchangers have been widely used in almost all industrial fields due to the compactdesign and the high heat transfer efficiency. We can offer a wide range of standard heat exchanges from 0.18m2 up to 2,500m2 in total heat transfer area to meet the diversi-fied and individual needs.

PLATE GASKET
FRAME
The plates are specially selected from various patterns so as to achieve optimum area and cost effective heat exchanger for eachunit. These plates can be classified into three patterns, namely.
1. Herringbone pattern such as LX-, UX-, RX-, and SX-2. Wash board pattern such as EX-, and FX-3. Special wave pattern such as GX-, and YX-
1. Herringbone patternThe herringbone design in LX series has corrugations with pitch which is rough and deep. In SX series, the pitch is fine and shal-low, hence LX series are used in application where low NTU is required, and SX series are best suited for high NTU application.
UX/RX-type is in between LX type and SX type.
1. Versatile gasketPlate Heat Exchanger is used in almost all process industries, assuch the gaskets are specifically selected based on the operatingcondition. A wide range of gaskets are available such as NBR,EPDM, IIR, FPM, Silicon, etc.
Special Hisaka (S-1) glue shall be applied for bonding
NTU of 1.5 and less is generally referred to as low NTU, and 3.0 and above is considered as high NTU

2. Wash board patternAs this type of plate has less metal to metal contact, it is nor-mally applied to fluid containing fibers or sludge. FX type ismainly used in the food industry, whereas EX type is usedmore conventional application.
3. Special patternGX type is developed for the heat transfer of fluid containingmuch slurry, YX type is used exclusively for vapor condensa-tion. Please refer to the specific details later.
2. Bond free gasket Slit In typeThese plate gaskets do not need adhesive. The slit in gasket is es-pecially recommended for those applications where frequent re-placement of the gasket is required. Further, without the adhesives, adhesive odor is reduced. This slit in type gasket is suitable for Foodapplication.
3. PTFE cushion gasket (TCG)Through our own development, HISAKA has pioneered PTFE cush-ion gaskets for the Plate Heat Exchanger. It is normally used in ap-plications where conventional synthetic rubber would have
limitations due to the corrosiveness of the fluid being handled. Withthis new development, the Plate Heat Exchangers can be applied inmuch wider field than before due to the chemical resistance and thedurability of PTFE.
Special double adhesive tape shall be applied for bonding
Features1. Excellent chemical resistance against most chemical especially
organic solvent.
2. Due to the elastic core of the TCG gasket, it does not require
strong tightening torque during the assembly of the unit. Thus reducing the
risks of plate deformation due to over tightening.
3. TCG gasket can be used for one side only, if the non-corrosive
fluid is running in the other side where conventional gasket can be used.

Even in the same series, the heat transfer characteristic is different due to plate pattern angle. Accute angle is suited to high NTU,while obtuse angle to low NTU. When the plates corrugated in accute and obtuse angles can be mixed together in a unit, inter-mediate thermal characteristics can be achieved.

JUMBO PLATE HEAT EXCHANGER
Advantages by using HISAKA Jumbo Plate Heat Exchanger
Mega plants and complex, required for total higher optimization, have been internationally planning and constructing.A great number of large size Plate Heat Exchangers are applied for the effective Central Cooling System (CCS) to facilitate thoseenergy consumption and efficiency.
Comparison in the size of Plate Heat ExchangersBoth Tubular and Plate Heat Exchangers are available for CCS, but Plate Heat Exchanger brings much more advantages.HISAKA Jumbo Plate Heat Exchanger has more benefits than other conventional large size plate heat exchanger ;
Less number of units due to largest connection size even in the same duty. Less heat transfer area by more pressure drop available for heat transfer.
These major benefits assist less installation space and works, maintenance works and initial cost saving for the equip-
ment itself as well as piping, pumps, valves and instruments.
HISAKA Jumbo Plate Heat Exchanger Series
UX-100/UX-130500mm (20) diameter plate porthole and connection can accept the max. 5000m3/h flow rate. Particularly, its unique plate patternis allowed to use seawater sufficiently and make high thermal and pressure-resistance, therefore it is most suitable for the largestsize of Central Cooling System.
RX-90The height is designed as per the particular restriction in the buildings (for HVAC) and/or in the maritime shipments (for Central
Cooler or LO Cooler). Also, max. 3200m3/h flow rate can be handled by 400mm (16) diameter plate porthole and connection.
UX-90Max. 2000m3/h flow rate is possible to pass through by 350mm (14) diameter plate porthole and connection. It has the same de-sign concept as UX-100/UX-130 and it is most suitable for the largest size of Central Cooling System as well as the wide range ofapplications such as heater, cooler, heat recovery etc.
SX-90350mm (14) diameter plate porthole and connection can help to handle the max. 2000m3/h flow rate. Plate design has very finepitch to meet high pressure-resistance and high thermal length (high heat recovery) for HVAC or heat recovery of process liquids.
Central Cooling System (CCS)Central cooling system is an excellent system
for cooling the fresh water circulating in theplant by means of seawater and/or low qualitywater.Fresh water is circulating in the closed loop. This cooling system will be free from cloggingand fouling, and also made in inexpensive ma-terial. Accordingly, fouling, clogging and corro-sion are managed only in CCS, then thissystem will offer economical maintenance andtotal operation cost saving.

Plate CondenserHISAKA developed the plate for exclusive application to vaporcondensing in large volume. HISAKA plate type condenser oflightweight and compact construction has the heat transferperformance of 2 to 3 times as high as the conventional shell& tube heat exchanger and, in addition, their required installa-tion space and weight are respectively 1/2 to 1/3 of shell &tube heat exchanger. Corrosion resistant material such asstainless steel, titanium, High Nickel alloy, etc. are selectivelyavailable as the plate material.
YX-80 SeriesAdvantages1. Heat transfer coefficient is about 2 times as high as that of
shell & tube heat exchanger. The condensing surface is al-ways secured and the heat transfer coefficient is improvedbecause condensate is immediately drained out.
2. To achieve muchless vapor pressure drop than the con-ventional plate type, special consideration is taken in com-bination of the vapor side plates and the cooling water sideplates.
3. Cooling water consumption is about half for shell & tubeheat exchanger.
4. The use of TCG gasket on the vapor and cooling media ex-
pands the application to wide field.
5. Easy cleaning and inspection of plates.
6. Easy change of the condensing capacity by increasing orreducing the number of plates.
7. Because of inlet and outlet connections at same side, YX-80 can be applied to not only an total condenser but also topartial condenser.

SUPER HIGH NTU PLATE
SX-SeriesFor DHC duty in HVAC application, since the secondary water is transferred to long distance through pipes and fittings in the cir-culation loop between plate heat exchanger and Air-conditioning units, smaller flow rate allows to use smaller size of pumps, pipes and fittings, which makes great saving on building initial cost, as well as pump running cost (lower electricity consumption).Consequently, the smaller flow rate makes large temperature change for secondary water. Automatically, this duty becomes highNTU.The following shows the difference in required circulating secondary flow rate and NTU for the duty of 1000RT. Therefore SX-Series is well-suited for high NTU HVAC applications. For another feature, SX-Series stands for high pressure operation even big difference oprating pressure between hot side andcold side. This is advantageous for heat exchange in skyscraper.
Smaller flow rate makes high NTU dutyLarger flow rate makes low NTU duty
Single Pass benefitsSX-Series realizes Single Pass design which brings bellow benefits.Single Pass allows to arrange all inlet and outlet connection at fixed frame only.
Simple piping Easy disassembling and assembling Capacity change without modification of piping
