Our final year end math project will be goe-model making and is for both groups.

Geo-model: You are going to build your very own geo-model using whatever shapes you like. You may build a castle, a car, a robot, a dog,...the choice is yours. The rules are as follows:

1. Use at least 5 different shapes or containers. They can be linneal, 2-D or 3-D. AT LEAST 1 needs to be 3-D so you can calculate surface area and volume.

2. Sketch the model first and PLAN.

Today, sketch it out, make a plan, and gather supplies. This is what it should look like today--a drawing with ideas.

Use items from around your house. Kleenex box, ball, paper or make a net and make a box. It’s your project, get creative! There are some ideas shown in tomorrow’s LB entry and you can use those to get your own creative ideas flowing. Of course, you can find ideas on line as well. But I’m hoping you will

NO spamming, or other such silliness.

Then, read the compliments, if any, that get sent to you. Write a response back that is meaningful and shows you read the compliment and that it made you feel good.

Example:

Mrs. Kovacs, I feel very good that you noticed I have a good relationship with my students. I felt like connecting with them was easy as they are all so sweet and easy to love. I hope to take what I learned from making these connections forward with me to whatever new opportunities I have next year. Thank you for letting me know you noticed and think relationships are important too. Ms. Robinson

Do NOT write:

Thank you

Yea I know, I rock

Really? I don’t think I’m good at that.

Compliments for and from classmates are fun to write and read.

4. Hexaflexagon-safety-guide 5. Watch This one is about tacos!! Wow, fun as that is, Vi Hart talks fast and it’s hard to keep up. To really make a hexaflexagon here are some templates (you don’t have to have these but they do help) and some slower directions. Watch How to Make Tri-Hexaflexagon (with Audio) - YouTubeYouTube HexaHexaFlexagon.pdf IF you get a working hexaflexagon, send me and a few of your closest friends along with your homeroom teacher a picture of it. Or video yourself using it and send the clip. ************************** Experts, do this one: search Share your working one if you get it to work.

Today, BUILD your geo-model. Remember the design process. Things may NOT go as planned. Be prepared to adjust, regroup, flex, start again, and so on. No frustration and tears please. This is to be fun!

Today your project will look like this:

Search track and field or Olympics in Epic Books (use codes puk7427or glx8883) Enjoy some track and field and olympic literature during track and field week. Rememer, you have access to epic books all summer.

Think of a compliment for 3 staff people at Lincoln and write an email to thank them. Ideas: Mrs. Little (book check out), Ms Kendall (front office), Ms Wickkland, the cook Mrs. Frogner, a former teacher you had, a specialist, Ms. Gail, Mr. Jim, Mr. Schmidt, etc. I bet you may even get an email back!!

Remember, Everyone likes to be appreciated. WRite them an email telling them what specifically you appreciate about them.

To find their email address go to the school district website, go to the schools tab and click on Lincoln, and then go to staff.

Trash to Treasure Today you will be upcycling an item that you don’t ever use or is “trash” to a newer item with a different purpose. Examples could be creating a pencil holder using an empty paper towel roll. Creating a book bag using a paper bag and duct tape. Creating a car using an empty toilet paper roll and some milk caps. BE CREATIVE. Take a picture and/or explain the process and purpose of your newly created item using trash.

Mine is the colorful one. Oh boy, it’s a little creepier and clown like then I envisioned but….no tears here. Shapes I see: cylinders (2), sphere, cone, pentagon eyes, linneal blue trim on hat, square buttons, rectangular arms and legs. That puts me at 9 diff. shapes.

Search music in Epic Books. (use codes puk7427or glx8883) Enjoy some music literature during music week.

Write a reflection on your year--highs (at least 3) lows ( at least 2) and how you will make adjustments to your own self as a student next year. Share your thoughts with your teacher via your google doc all or in an email. You should write this in your life journal or a note to put on your bedroom bulletin board so you can look at it and remember before you start school next year.

There are choice boards up for Music, Chinese, and Gym. These are located in the specialists section below. Go to these choice boards and choose your activities for today! Involve your family if you want! Get outside for PE when the weather is nice!

Today, put any finishing touches on your geo-model and do the calculations piece. I am looking for a chart with the shapes, linneal, 2-D and 3-D that you see in your model. THen for each one tell what you can about it like area, surface area, perimeter, and volume. IF you know a formula, share it. If you want a column for why you might want to know this, I would LOVE that.

Put this chart on your google math doc. Take a pic of your model and put that there too. Share it with your teachers and a few classmates.

Bock: Review past ixl lessons in grades 4-6 and do the Krypto and Geo lessons in Kovacs’ math.

Robinson: No meeting. Give yourself a grade on your final math project out of 50. Look at the point values for each thing you had to do. Email me what you believe your grade should be and why.

After you grade yourself, spend at least 20 minutes on Scratch. Create something cool and share it with your classmates :)

Kovacs: Math Meeting at 10:00 to share your geo-model project. You can have have it there to show in person. But also, I will be looking for a few people who are willing and want to use the present mode to show their chart and their calculations. You need to be at this meeting but you do NOT need to

Revisit your summer bucket book list and recommendations from fellow explorers and get started! Don’t tell anyone! Don’t share! Shhhhh! Keep it a secret.

Write a plan for your summer. What you hope to do, what you know you will do, etc. Travel, fun, academics like reading log plans, etc.

Share your plan in your evidence of learning all with your teacher[s] and write it in your life journal or diary or a place where will you see it in July so you can reflect--how am I doing?

Share your plan with your parents so they can see what you hope to do. They are the ones who can help you make this happen.
