Sunnydale among the best for adding value Sunnydale Community College is among specialist schools and academies from across the country to have gained national recognition for their work adding value to their students' achieve- ments at GCSE. A total of 469 schools na- tionally have received a commendation from the Specialist Schools and Acad- emies Trust. Their achieve- ment was marked at a celebratory event on March 16th in Central London. The schools, including Sunnydale, achieved high value-added scores in their GCSE results in 2010. Value-added scores show the progress students in a school make between their test results at age 11 and 16 using the Jesson value-add- ed measure (JVA), devel- oped by educational expert Professor David Jesson. Elizabeth Reid, Chief Ex- ecutive of the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust, said, “Congratula- tions to all the schools and academies that have added value to their students' achievements. "Successful schools under- stand the value of data, such as these value-added scores, in helping to ensure all young people perform to the very best of their ability. The value-added measures show how schools make a difference and raise achievement above expec- tations.” She added, "These results show the commitment and hard work of teachers and students in schools across the country. They demon- strate the power of high ex- pectations, good teaching and the ambition for every young person to get the qualifications they need to have the best possible choices of career or educa- tion in later life." Every school invited to the celebration achieved 12 points or more on the JVA scale for five or more GCSEs at grade A*-C and/or five or more GCSEs at grade A*-C including English and maths. Timothy Hackworth pupils have been learning about energy efficiency and saving money by using energy wisely. The school council gave a presentation to pupils on work they have done with Sam Jackson from Durham County Council about the school's use of energy and what more can be done to improve energy consump- tion. Sam said, “Timothy Hack- worth is the most energy efficient school I have visited so far but the children think that they can improve even more!" Mrs Anne Dockray, Head Teacher said, “The messages that the children gave us are for adults and children alike. All the staff are prepared to receive a "BUSTED!" card if children catch them leaving lights and computers on when the room is empty! It was a great reminder that young and old have a responsibili- ty to save energy whenever possible.” Teachers are BUSTED! Grants available The Shildon Youth Council has launched their ‘Commu- nity Chest’ grant scheme. They aim to provide money to local groups who provide services for children, young people and families in the Shildon area. The maximum grant is £75 and all applica- tions will be reviewed by the young people of Shildon Youth Council. Application forms are available from www.shildonyouth.co.uk or by emailing council@shildo- nyouth.co.uk. The Mayor of Shildon Gareth Howe had a busy weekend officiated in two very special wedding an-niversaries. The first Diamond cel-ebration was for Alan and Anne Kirtley from Garbutt Street, who were married on St. Patrick's Day on 17th March 1951 at the Primitive Chapel, where the Co-op is now.Alan, 82, was born in Church Street and attended St. John's School with his twin brother Sid.Eight two year-old Anne is also a local girl. She lived in Walter Street and attended the Council School and Close House School. After leaving school Alan started at Wilson's Forge in Bishop Auckland as an apprentice moulder. When he was 18 years-old he was conscripted into the Army. In late 1948 he started at Toledo Woodhead Springs in Aycliffe Trading Estate working on the factory floor, later becoming a su-pervisor. He was also the factory’s First Aid officer for 34 years. He later worked at Aycliffe Hospital as a Nursing Assistant for around eight years.Anne worked at West Auckland Clothing factory until she was married. After the family came along

she became caretaker of Garbutt Street Method-ist Chapel and was also a warden for houses in the Sunnydale area. The sprightly couple met at Shildon Hippodrome picture house in 1943, where they were childhood sweet-hearts.The have moved home several times throughout their marriage and are cur-rently living in the same street where Alan was born. They have three sons, John, Paul and Melvin, as well as seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Both Alan and Anne were keen supporters of Shildon Football Club. For around ten years Alan was the trainer/physio and Anne helped out in the kitchen. The couple often attend Elm Road Club where they play bingo. Alan was on the club committee for 18 years. They spent their very special day surrounded by family and friends and in the evening they went for a celebratory meal at the Civic Hall with their family.Anne said one of the secrets of their long and happy marriage is that they never go to bed without saying goodnight to each other.

Matt and Muriel Emmerson also celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniver-sary at the weekend. Sixty years ago on Saturday 19th March the lovely couple were wed at St. Mark’s Church in Eldon, after they met and fell in love at Bath’s Hall Dance in Darlington. They both lived separately in Darlington before they were married but moved in together on Ruby Street, Shildon after they tied the knot.Matt started working at the tender age of 14 as a French polisher and cabinet maker at James & Co Furniture Dealers in Darlington, before enlist-ing in the Army at 18. After his service he worked as a joiner for Stephenson’s Construction in Bishop Auckland, before later becoming general foreman where he worked for 30 years until he retired.Muriel started off work as a hairdresser in Darlington, before later becoming a swimming instructor at Kelloe School for over 20

years. They lived on Ruby Street for 25 years, before moving in 1981 to their current home on Byerley Road. They have two boys, Graham and John, five grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. They love spending time with their family. As hobbies they enjoyed their dancing, especially at the Civic when it first opened. Matt liked to

potter in the garden while Muriel took her steady hand to arts and crafts. She has created many wonders in icing and cake decorating in her time and also enjoyed knitting and sewing. They held an open day at home on Saturday for family and friends to visit and join in the celebrations. The close family then enjoyed a meal together at Walworth Castle on Sunday.

Shildon couples share 120 years of marriage!

Alan and Anne Kirtley with the Mayor of Shildon, Council-lor Gareth Howe, on their special day.

Councillor Gareth Howe brought Muriel and Matt a beautiful bouquet of flowers.

Shildon bowlers take down British Isles Championships

As a result of their success in the All England Over 60s Fours Championships last year, four men from Shildon Bowls Club have beaten all comers to take down the British Isles Over 60s Fours Championship held at Stanley Indoor Bowls Club.Brian Hutchinson, Jimmy Maddison, Kenny Peters

and skipper Billy ‘The Shildon Assassin’ Maddison were drawn to play Ireland in the semi-final, a game which they won 20 shots to 13, pitching them in the showdown match against Wales. It was a rout in the final, the Shildon lads winning 25 shots to 5, to be crowned British Isles

Champions. The four men are extreme-ly proud of their achieve-ments, which is magnified even more so with the fact that Shildon’s 3 rink club is comparatively very small compared to most 6 to 8 rink clubs that enjoy success in these competi-tions.
