SAFE AND SECURE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT (Cont…) Another focus is happy greetings when we see each other in the morning. It is delightful to share conversations with happy students as they arrive at school. Thank you to our families who contribute to these friendly greetings. Stay and Play: Many families are continuing to enjoy “Stay & Play” in our early childhood space and in our primary nature play area. Thank you to parents and carers for your supervision at this time. Last week’s ‘Stay & Play’ was reported to be safe and happy! Please continue to refer any unsupervised children to the school office.

POSITIVE PARTNERSHIPS Cross Country: Thank you to Ms Katrina Smith, Ms Alana Nicolle, Ms Tamara Travia, parents, carers and family members who supported our students to prepare for, and complete, the Inter-School Cross-Country event last week. As well as the excitement of our Year 3s running at the inters for the first time, we had many comments about the outstanding, positive behaviour shown by our Years 3-6 team. Thank you to our families, staff and students who strive for high standards of sporting spirit and positive team behaviours every day. Please see below for details of our fantastic results. This was a great team effort by Hilton students. A reminder that our faction sports day will be on Friday 18

th September.

Hilton PS P & C: Thank you to Cath Fitzhardinge, Tammy Vladich and helpers who coordinated the showing of the 2040 movie last Friday evening. As well as the positive messages of practical environmental change, this was a very enjoyable community event, shared by students and families. Thank you to our P&C! P & C Fundraising: Thanks to Mrs Eva Morris who is coordinating the Hilton P & C fund-raising tea towels and tote bags. The students’ art work is looking fantastic! Students and parents are also busy with Year 6 Graduation fundraising activities. Look out for details of refreshments after the Open Classrooms evening on Wednesday 9

th September 2020 and look out

for the Year 6 Cook Book, coming soon!

Many of our proposed classes for 2021 are full, with a waiting list for Kindergarten places in 2021. Your updates will assist our planning for budgets, staffing and class structures.

Coffee pod

art

Every year, over 60 billion single use coffee pods are made, used and disposed of worldwide. The majority of these are made in factories using aluminium, foil and plastic as well as the organic matter (coffee) inside.

Most of the discarded coffee pods end up in landfill or in the ocean, as they are too small to be recycled at the majority of recycling plants. These pods will take anything from 100-500 years to break down. With over 39,000 coffee pods being used every second around the world, and approximately 3,000,000 pods used daily in Australia alone, the amount of waste produced is an extreme environmental concern.

Other than using a very small number of discarded coffee pods for jewellery and art projects, some of the coffee pod manufacturing companies are now addressing the problem through the production of completely compostable coffee capsules, made from bamboo and paper, as well as the introduction of recycling satchels and drop off locations to ensure the coffee pods are

recycled at specialty recycling plants.

The amount of waste produced through the use of coffee pods is a major environmental issue at a global level and hopefully through our art project we can increase awareness and help in the fight against waste.

Room 9 (Year 5) News

Room 9, Year Five wanted to raise awareness about the harm that plastic does to dolphins in the Swan River. We did all the research about them and found out the main causes of their habitat loss and decrease in numbers. We started creating the layout of a dolphin out of bottle tops on two sheets of cardboard, but we later realised that we would have to make it bigger. We added seaweed and filled the dolphins’ body in using plastic bottle top lids. Dolphins in the Swan River area are not thriving and losing their habitat because of human beings behaviour. We have no idea of the impact that we have on these sea creatures if we don’t learn about it. We are not being responsible for the amount of plastic we use and dispose of without thinking. Sometimes we forget to pick up our dog’s business and that is the second greatest cause of algae blooms. Algae blooms affect marine mammals like dolphins by making it harder for them to find food. So, if we really want to change what is happening to our amazing environment, we can educate others about the problem and make sure to use less plastic every day.

It was great fun making this piece of art to make people aware about our Swan River dolphins. Every day students from room 9

would bring in plastic bottles lids to stick on the art work. We all got a turn in designing, placing and sticking the lids on. It was hard because we didn’t always have the right colours to decorate with. In the end, the finishing design was outstanding and it looked fabulous. It was fun making the art as well as writing the background information behind the design. The whole class learnt a lot and got a lot out of it. We found out how to upcycle bottle tops and a lot about what else is affecting our Swan River dolphins.

Interschool Cross Country Carnival 2020 A huge congratulation to our cross country superstars who competed against our local schools at the Interschool Cross Country Carnival last Thursday.

They have been training hard for this event and on the day each student showed determination and represented Hilton Primary School well. They should be proud of achieving their personal best.

Congratulations to our placegetters in Year 4, Lena (2nd

) and Levi (3rd

).

A special morning tea was held the next day, hosted by our thoughtful sports captains to thank all the runners for their training and performance.

Well done to all!

Miss Smith

Rooms 7 & 9 - Science Day On Friday, 21st August we had our Science Day. Room 7 and Room 9 combined to do the experiments. The first experiment I did was in our class. We were making algae water spheres. Ms Travia showed us a video all about them. The small water spheres look like little blobs or bubbles. They are an alternative to plastic water bottles, and were used at a marathon a few years ago. The experiment was really fun but when we tasted them they were horrible. The second session was in Ms Townes class. We had little pallets of sand from different points of the beach. High tide, middle and right near the water. We then looked closely at them to see if there were any bits of rubbish mixed in and crossed them off a chart. The science experiments were really fun and I had an awesome time. By Scarlett, Room 7

P & C News

Hello Hilton Families,

Firstly, thank you for your support on Friday’s movie night, approximately 70 of us enjoyed a night of Dahl, popcorn and hot choccies while watching the amazing 2040 film. As an added bonus we managed to raise approximately $800! A big thanks to Tammy Vladich for coordinating the event and making the delicious Dahl! Thanks also to Emily Furzer, Eva Morris, Martine Pronk, Amanda Hodgson and Lucas Sandor for all your help on the night!

We have a few more fundraising initiatives in the works, you may have seen some emails and flyers about our Jute Bag design competition. The designs on the jute bag will be all about Hilton and what we love about our suburb. This way we foster a sense of pride and love for our location and hopefully raise more funds for our school.

For this we will need as many kids as possible to participate and submit their artwork and 3 words describing 'what they love about Hilton'. Please see the flyer for details and submit your artwork at the front office and send your child’s “3 words” to your class rep.

We have also commenced planning the tea towel fundraiser. Given that our student numbers have increased, this year we will have two separate tea towels (Kindy – Year 1 and Year 2 – Year 6) – please see flyer for details. Please note that orders are open now until THIS Friday 27

th August, so please get in quick to avoid disappointment. A big thanks

to Eva Morris (Kindy mum) for Coordinating both the Jute Bag and tea towel fundraisers – a huge effort!

Cheers
