Farewell to Sue Bell On Monday evening, we held a surprise farewell for DMSC staff member, Mrs Sue Bell. Staff travelled by bus to the Jeparit tennis courts where we enjoyed some great food, company and a little tennis. Sue was thrilled with the venue choice, describing the Jeparit Tennis Club as, “My favourite place on earth!” Sue joined the DSMC staff in 2006, taking on the role as librarian and classroom assistant. Sue’s supreme organisational skills and empathy were both evident in these fields, however she truly shined when she took over the operations in our Science Lab. Sue is widely regarded as a leader in her field, with Lab Techs from other schools seeking out her wise counsel. We have long known how fortunate we were to have someone of Sue’s calibre supporting our Science teachers and she will be sorely missed. Sue has also been a driving force behind our Staff Association, ensuring all are included in a wide range of fun activities. From organising the end of year staff function to running our monthly quizzes, Sue has played a key role in ensuring that our staff continue to be one of the most cohesive that I – and all of us – have ever worked in. In her farewell speech, Sue mentioned how she has absolutely loved her time at DMSC and how she feels fortunate to have worked here. We share those sentiments with Sue and it is at times like this that we are reminded of how lucky we are. On behalf of the DMSC community, I would like to thank Sue for her many and varied contributions to the school. We wish she and Gary our most sincere best wishes as they look to new challenges and adventures in the future. We know she will relish her “Granny” duties and having more time to share with those she loves. Good-bye and good luck Sue! Staff Professional Learning Tomorrow, April 5, all of our teaching staff will be participating in a professional learning day in Rainbow. This is the second day of some training we commenced last year and staff are looking forward to it. It is essential for staff to continue with their learning, as it enables us to deliver the best possible programs for our students. Anzac Day Once again, DMSC will host the Dimboola RSL’s Anzac Service. There will be a dawn service at 6.00am in front of the Memorial Building, with the longer service and march at 9.00am. Those wishing to march should assemble at the school gates at 8.30am. (Please see flyer later in the newsletter.) There will be a free breakfast for those who attend the dawn service, served at the DMSC canteen at 6.30am. Happy Holidays Term One is now complete for students and there have been many highlights throughout the first 10 weeks. While I know staff and students are tired, I hope that time is taken to reflect on what has been accomplished in Term One. For the students who know that they still have room for improvement, I look forward to seeing an improved effort right from the start of next term. For the vast majority of students who worked very well in Term One, congratulations on your efforts and keep up the good work. I would like to thank the hard-working staff of DMSC – both teaching and educational support. They are all very committed to our wonderful school and continue to strive to deliver the best possible outcomes for our students. Happy holidays to all members of our school community and I hope Easter is happy time in your families. Please remember that we start Term Two on TUESDAY April 23. Anne Gawith Principal

Isaaia Hollingsworth Role in school? I am playing a role as bus captain within the school.

Why did you choose to nominate for this role? I have been on the bus since Grade 4, and felt that it is my time to join a leadership role with the buses. I have experience with leadership roles as well. What do you hope to achieve in this role? I hope to achieve an attendance of 100% for the bus as well as the school. Highlight of your time at DMSC so far? There have been so many highlights but one that stands out the most is attending the school sports and versing some challenging competitors that are in them. Favourite subject and why? I really enjoy History and learning the interesting events that have happened throughout. In History, I’m learning about the gruesome events in the French Revolution. Advice for younger students:

Study early on.

Don’t stress. Hopes for the future? (Study/Career/Travel/etc?) I hope to become involved in Pastoral care when I’m older as I like going to church every Sunday. Favourite pastime: Video games, playing with pets and going to church. Favourite food: Lasagne Favourite animal: Cheetah

…………………………………………………………………………….

Hayley Brooker Role in school? Vice-Captain for Horsham small bus.

Why did you choose to nominate for this role? I was asked and I panicked! What do you hope to achieve in this role? I don’t think there’s much to achieve in this role apart from making sure the younger students behave. Highlight of your time at DMSC so far? My highlight would have to be meeting one of my best friends, had I not enrolled at DMSC, I would never have met her. Favourite subject and why? Art, because I am able to create things from my imagination and there are no boundaries.

Hayley continued… Advice for younger students: Research the requirements for your desired career or university course, I thought I would have to do VCE to get into university, but the course requirements allowed me to do VCAL instead. Hopes for the future? (Study/Career/Travel/etc?) I want to study at a Melbourne university and get my Bachelor of Visual Arts. Melbourne is also where I hope to move and work as an artist. Favourite pastime: My favourite pastime is drawing and creating novels in my mind. Favourite food: Roast Chicken and roast vegetables. Favourite animal: I like Koalas because they sleep for majority of the day and eat leaves that are otherwise poisonous to other animals. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Year 11 Movie Reviews… Rouge One (M)

Rogue One is a film that was released in 2016 and was directed by Gareth

Edwards. It follows the story of a female protagonist named Jyn Erso

(played by Felicity Jones) and her story for finding her dad. During her

time trying to find her dad, the Rebels find her and recruit her, as her dad

was the one behind creating the Death Star. After his death on Eadu, Jyn

Erso demands that her and the Rebels infiltrate Scarrif to retrieve the

plans of the Death Star. They all disagree, however, a small amount of

them agree, and sneak into Scariff. They successfully beam the plans back

up to the ship, but all of the Rogue One heroes perish after either getting

killed by troopers or dying from the Death Star. The movie ends with

Darth Vader showing his power and slaughtering Rebels to get the plans

back. The rebels only just escape with the plans, and the credits roll. This

was a great Star Wars film and it showed the audience how the events of

Star Wars IV: A New Hope was possible.

I rate it: 9.5/10

Die Hard with a Vengeance (M)

The film Die Hard with a Vengeance, directed by John McTiernan was an overall entertaining movie, clashing action and comedy together perfectly. This film stars actor Bruce Willis who was the main character as detective John McClane, and his equally famous sidekick Samuel L. Jackson, who plays the role of Zeus, a black person who believes all white people are racist. While these two stars shone and made the film not only a rollercoaster of action, they also managed to give everyone a kick with laughter. Their engagements with other actors are also what made the movie as good as it is. The plotline is intense, having people on the edges of their seats when something horrific is about to happen, only to be prevented at the last second. The film was well directed, not wasting time on pointless dialogue, and instead spending more of it providing an interesting viewing experience. For those who believe that they can usually guess what occurs throughout the movie, it does have a stereotypical ending with the ‘good guys’ winning, but also it has many twists and turns that surprise everyone. After thoroughly analysing this film, I would rate it a 7/10 stars, as it makes for an overall entertaining experience. It is extremely well directed, giving it the high score, and the entertainment part is very high, just not flawless. I would recommend this film to anybody who enjoys action blockbusters and like to laugh at comedy, no matter the age, there is humour included in the film that anyone can enjoy.
