SAVE THE DATE for State 4-H Rec Lab

This year 4-H Rec Lab is going to be in Joliet, Montana, on April 8-10, 2016. The theme is

“Reach for the Stars”.

State 4-H Rec Lab is for youth who were 13 or older as of October 1, 2015. This is an

opportunity to learn leadership skills, new projects, have fun and bring back lots of ideas to

their county and club.

The Planning Committee is looking for workshop proposals. Both teen and adult presenters

are welcome. Proposals are due by Friday, December 4, 2015. If you have an idea for a

workshop, please let the office know and we can get you the necessary forms to be submitted.

Who knew pumpkins could taste so scrumptious! Twelve youth members from various clubs attended the Pumpkin Palooza workshop and tasted many different pumpkin recipes. The recipes included pumpkin pie, cinnamon pumpkin swirl bread, pumpkin soup and the delicious pumpkin roll. We played pin the stem on the pumpkin, crafted pumpkins from old canning rings and made chef hats to remind us about food safety! The attendees also learned how to select and cook a pumpkin for use in a recipe, food safety, and health facts including the large source of Vitamin A and that the name pumpkin originated from “pepon” - the Greek word for “large melon.”

4-H: The Youth Development Program of MSU Extension

This year due to interest from one 4-H member in particular, Hill County is piloting a miniature beef program. The miniature beef project will have the same requirements as the full sized beef project. They will enroll as a market beef member, complete a level in the beef project book and the animal record. They will sell as a market livestock project through the Great Northern Fair Livestock Sale. The carcass will be graded according to steer of merit standards set by Montana Stockgrowers Association however, due to the smaller weight they will not be eligible for steer of merit but will participate in the Big Sky Carcass fund.

There will be a few restrictions to the project this year for those that choose to participate. Due to the initial piloting phase of the project there is a limit placed of 5 miniature beef slots available for the current 4-H year. This is based on a first come first serve basis, currently there is one slot still open for the miniature beef program. The requirements to participate in the first year of this project include: -Member and parents are required to notify the Extension Office -Member in good standing (books are up to date and completed) -Member is expected to actively promote the miniature beef project through public speaking engagements (newspaper article, radio ads, and one-on-one presentations) -Attend at least three meetings with the Extension Agent regarding miniature beef consumer education and public speaking -Members and parents will sign an agreement to the above terms

Market potential for the miniature beef is surprisingly similar to full sized beef following the same fluctuations in price. Per beef extension educator in Wyoming that has done market research described the market as the breeders expecting a higher price for what they consider a niche product but the buyers are not willing to pay premium prices. The buyer is purchasing the same quality beef experience but a more appropriate sized steak (dietary recommendations per USDA for one serving of beef for a steak is equivalent to a deck of cards).

This is an exciting opportunity for the youth of Hill County to increase their knowledge of consumer education and public speaking skills. The goal of the pilot program is to educate the public and buyers of the miniature beef potential and benefits which in turn will allow the project to grow by the 2016-2017 4-H year.

If you are interested in the miniature beef project there is still one slot available. Please contact the Extension Office for more information at (406) 265-5481 x 233.

A Tennessee Walking Horse Breeder, Walkers on Water, is donating a four month old registered

Tennessee Walking filly to a 4-H member. The breeder is willing to donate a filly to a member that

will participate in the Colt to Maturity project. The only requirement is that the youth write an essay

in 1,000 words or less outlining their experience with horses (even if they have not had an

experience with horses), what the goals will be for this filly, and how they will be achieved. Eboni,

four month old filly, should mature at 15.1 hands. She is versatility bred as her dam competed at

shows and is now a trail horse and her dam is a working ranch horse. Deadline for the essay is

December 1st and completed essays or any questions can be emailed to [email protected].

Who can be in 4-H? How Do I Join? Any youth who is 5 years old on October 1st may join a 4-H Cloverbud group. Cloverbuds is a non-competitive educa-tional program for youth ages 5 to 8 years of age and is the ONLY project they can enroll in. Youth age 8 on October 1st may join a regular 4-H club as a full member who can enroll in several different projects. They join a local 4-H Club that meets 6 to 12 times a year and pick at least one project. Projects range from traditional projects such as cooking to swine to bicycle to pocket pets. The 4-H year begins on October 1st each year and enrollment is ongoing throughout the year. Some activities do have enrollment deadline dates to take part in. Call the Hill County Extension Office and they can help you find a club and be-come a member today.
