As we begin the new academic year, I’m reminded of the renewed commitment the Hilbert College community has made to putting student success first. Over the last few years, the faculty and staff have embraced the concept of an engagement model, initially developed by our colleagues at Purdue University, to deliver an educational experience that is student-centered and leads to career and lifelong success.

This edition of the Hilbert Magazine describes several examples of how the model is working. First, a story on my favorite day of the year - commencement. In May we awarded 17 associate, 245 baccalaureate, and 20 master’s degrees with Sister Ann Marie Hudzina, General Minister of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph, offering the commencement address. We honored Dr. Charles Ernst who for 15 years has served as the faculty advisor of the H-Files Student Newspaper and most recently as the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning during his 30+ years of faculty service at Hilbert. It was delightful to also recognize Sister Emily Therese Bloom for her service as a faculty member and more recently for her contributions as a member of the Board of Trustees. As Chairperson Gretchen Wylegala proclaimed Sister Emily is truly a life-long learner, a tireless champion for excellence for higher education, and has inspired students, faculty, staff, and trustees with her commitment to Hilbert College.

We are grateful for the generosity of the participants in our annual golf outing which raised over $100,000 for student scholarships in June. It is vitally important to keep a Hilbert education affordable while minimizing the need for student debt. Your participation in the annual fund and through major gifts is sincerely appreciated and makes a difference in the lives of our students. The Teagle grant we received is also linked to our college affordability and student success goals. The objective is in partnership with St. Bonaventure University, Jamestown Community College, and Erie County Community College to create a seamless transition for transfer students to attend Hilbert after spending a year or two at the community college.

I’d invite you to return to campus for two exciting events this fall. First, is homecoming weekend with the San Damiano Awards presentation on Friday, September 26th. Also, please consider joining the Hilbert Reads program this fall. Our campus community is reading In the Sanctuary of Outcasts and author Neil White will be making a campus presentation on October 21st at 7 p.m. in Swan Auditorium.

Thank you for all that you have done to help Hilbert students be successful. Please come back to visit the campus to an event or to just stop by and reconnect with the faculty and staff that make Hilbert such a special place.

Fr. Greg Jakubowicz, O.F.M. has been named College Chaplain at Hilbert College. He will assist in developing and ensuring the Catholic Franciscan identity and mission of Hilbert and coordinate the life of the Church on campus.

Fr. Greg has spent the last five years as the College Chaplain at Siena College. He is a native of West Seneca, NY. Fr. Greg will also be responsible for coordinating liturgical and sacramental life; encouraging individuals in the development of faith and spiritual growth; guiding the campus community, particularly students, through pastoral counseling; promoting an understanding of Catholic social teachings/social issues and a response through community service; and building a faith community at the College that reaches out to persons of all religious denominations. Fr. Greg will also teach Philosophy 218 – Moral Issues in Contemporary Society and oversee the campus chapel.

In 1997, Fr. Greg joined the Franciscan Friars of Holy Name Province. He professed his first vows in 1999 and professed his solemn vows in 2003. He was ordained to the presbyterate in 2004. His first ministerial assignment after ordination was at his alma mater, St. Bonaventure University, as an Assistant Professor of Business Law. However, after one year Fr. Greg was assigned by his Provincial Minister to be Vocation Director for the Franciscans and moved to New York City. Two years later Fr. Greg was asked to

serve as the Chief Operating Officer of the Washington Theological Union, a Roman Catholic graduate school of theology and ministry in Washington, DC.

He first met the Franciscan Friars of Holy Name Province at South Buffalo’s Bishop Timon High School, his alma mater. Fr. Greg earned his B.A. from St. Bonaventure and then went on to earn his J.D. from SUNY at Buffalo School of Law. He was admitted to practice law in New York State in 1991. Prior to joining the Franciscan Friars, he spent five years working for LexisNexis in Charlottesville, VA.

Serve New York at The Service Collaborative of Western New York has funded an AmeriCorps VISTA position, which will split time at Hilbert College and St. Bonaventure University, with an objective to develop an Office of Veteran Affairs. Serve New York has named Morgan Woodson to the VISTA post.

Woodson is a veteran of the United States Air Force. She served as a Pharmacy Technician at David Grant Medical Center. Woodson was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2010 where she operated a pharmacy and assisted in the air evacuation of injured soldiers. She is currently pursuing her Master of Public Administration degree at Hilbert.

The goal of this new position is to create an Office

of Veteran Affairs that will recruit student veterans and increase the number of current services provided to student veterans and their families at Hilbert and St. Bonaventure. The Vista member will coordinate with student admissions to conduct veteran outreach, design and implement veteran specific orientations, increase community awareness, research best practices, and enhance current services offered at both campuses resulting in increased veteran student retention.

By accomplishing this project, Hilbert College and St. Bonaventure University will work to enhance employment opportunities for our veteran community, as more veterans will have access to higher education through these efforts.

Serve New York Funds Veteran Affairs Position For Hilbert

Hilbert College is pleased to announce that President Cynthia Zane has been named to a new steering committee of college and university presidents that will assess the future of independent colleges. The Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) has organized the 22-member panel to develop a plan that encourages independent colleges and universities to revitalize their missions and business models. The project, The Future of Independent Liberal Arts Colleges, is funded by the Lumina Foundation.

With the guidance of the steering committee, the proje ct will explore new approaches to higher education, alternative college business models, and potentially disruptive trends in American society and education along with the traditional characteristics and missions of independent liberal arts colleges that are regarded as essential to their success. The project will provide a new opportunity for CIC members to lead the national conversation about what it means to offer a high-quality education in the 21st century.

“Predictions about the future of higher education by politicians, journalists, and policy analysts often disregard or deride the effectiveness of traditional colleges and universities,” said CIC President Richard Ekman. “CIC, however, has always tried to find an appropriate balance between innovations in higher education that show real promise for the future and the existing features of member institutions that have long demonstrated their value. In this spirit, CIC’s new project will explore the future of independent colleges.”

During its initial meeting—which will convene September 16–17, 2014, in Washington, DC—the steering committee will focus on the development of a research agenda for the coming year. CIC staff and others will then conduct the research and prepare several framing papers based on the steering committee’s guidance. The committee’s second meeting will be devoted to development of an action plan to help CIC member institutions reexamine their missions and long-term strategic plans in intentional ways.

President Zane Named to Steering Committee on the Future of Independent Liberal Arts Colleges

The Teagle Foundation’s Board of Directors has approved a grant of $230,000 to Hilbert College, St. Bonaventure University, Erie Community College, and Jamestown Community College for the project, “A New Structure for General Education.” The grant will be funded over three years.

This collaborative proposal brings together four Western New York institutions for the purpose of revising general education requirements that will help improve learning outcomes and processes for all students, including those who transfer between these institutions. The project seeks to rework the general education curricula to reflect a common set of learning outcomes and create a more coherent experience for all students.

National and regional trends are expected to affect enrollment within institutions of higher learning across Western New York. Consequently, institutions in Western New York must re-think how higher education functions and develop initiatives aimed at collaborative efficiencies.

This initiative will be a faculty-led rethinking of how

learning objectives can help ensure student success. In addition, this innovative partnership between public and private, 2-year and 4-year institutions will be able to serve as a model for additional collaborations.

Phillip Catanese, Sister Marcia Ann Fiutko, FSSJ, and Lorraine Hritcko have been named to the Hilbert College Board of Trustees. Ronald Soluri, Sr. and Ann Swan have had their terms on the Hilbert Board extended.

Phillip Catanese returns to the Hilbert Board, he previously served as a trustee at the college from 2002-10, serving as the Vice Chair from 2008-10 and Secretary from 2003-07. Catanese is Vice President of Corporate Relations at The Buffalo News, having previously worked in various executive capacities in the retail food industry for more than 25 years. Active in the community, Catanese is on the Board for the Olmstead Center for the Visually Impaired and is on the advisory Boards for the Hillside Work Scholarship Program and the WNY Food Bank. He was previously on the Board for Homespace. Catanese received an associate’s degree in business from Bryant & Stratton.

Sister Marcia Ann Fiutko, FSSJ, has been a professed member of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph for 39 years and currently serves on the Leadership Team of her Congregation as Associate General Minister, and also serves as the House Minister for their Motherhouse, Immaculate Conception Convent, located across the street from Hilbert College. She is an active member of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, has served on the boards of Immaculata Academy, Marycrest Manor and Marycrest Heights and, is currently a member of the Buffalo Diocesan Pastoral Council. She served for 25 years in Catholic Education as a teacher, principal, and campus minister at St. Sebastian School in Dearborn Heights, MI, Immaculata Academy in Hamburg, NY, St. Francis High School in Athol Springs, NY, and St. Stanislaus School in Chicopee, MA. Prior to being elected to Congregational leadership, Sister Marcia served for 10 years as pastoral associate at St. Peter’s R.C. Church in Lewiston, NY.

Lorraine Hritcko (Ritz-koh) is currently Director, Global Software Sales at Conning in Hartford, Conn. Her career journey began after earning her MBA at Binghamton University in 1986 and she was recruited by Aetna in Hartford, CT where she began a three-year executive development program with a focus on human resources. At the conclusion of the program, Hritcko was promoted to the head of human resources for the Corporate Communications Division, which included

public relations, speech writing, graphic design, a state-of-the-art television studio, and a 200-person print shop. She followed that with promotions to human resources for the Investment Division and head of communications for the Investment Division. Hritcko managed communications with external rating agencies and with the Investment Committee of the Board of Directors on Aetna's investment performance during the financial crisis of the late 1980s - early 90s. In 1998, she was promoted to the Y2K Project for Aetna International, which had 26 businesses in 18 countries, where she travelled significantly, logging 800,000 miles in 18 months. In 2000, Hritcko was promoted to the position of Chief of Staff for both the Chairman and CEO/President of Aetna International. After leaving Aetna, she was hired by the Insurance Division of SunGard, where she spent eight years working throughout North America, Europe, South America and Asia. Prior to her start at Conning in March 2011, she spent three years at Towers Watson. Hritcko is a 1981 graduate of Hilbert’s paralegal studies program.

Ronald Soluri, Sr. has served many years on the Hilbert College Board of Trustees and served as Chair of the board’s audit/finance committee. Soluri is the Managing Director of Freed Maxick, CPAs P.C. Freed ranks number one in Buffalo Business First’s list of Buffalo CPA firms, and is in the top 100 firms nationally. Soluri’s primary responsibility is management of the Firm’s four offices in Buffalo, Rochester, Batavia and Syracuse, as well as various consulting, accounting, and auditing engagements. He has 41 years of experience in accounting and taxation including acquisitions, sales, and contract negotiations.

A community leader in many civic activities in the Western New York area and a longtime teacher in the Buffalo Public Schools, Ann Swan serves as executive director of the William E. and Ann L. Swan Foundation. Swan served as chairperson of Hilbert’s board from 2010-13. She has been affiliated with Hilbert’s board since 2004 and has chaired the executive committee twice, as well as served as chair and vice chair of the student affairs committee, and was a member of the institutional advancement committee. Swan received the President’s Medal, one of the college’s highest honors, at Hilbert’s 51st annual commencement ceremony in 2012.

More than 60 Hilbert College alumni, faculty, and staff competed in the Run the ‘Burg for Autism at J.P. Fitzgerald’s in Hamburg, NY on June 7.

The 5k run/walk, now in its fourth year, has generated net proceeds of over $250,000 for the Autistic Services and SS. Peter & Paul Parents Guild.

Buffalo Bills play-by-play announcer, John Murphy, served at the post-race event emcee.

NEWS & NOTES LEADERSHIP TRAINING CAMP SPEAKERS

Dr. Beth Triplett, Vice President for Enrollment Management at Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa and Sergio Rodriguez, former candidate for Mayor of the City of Buffalo and current President of Los Tainos Senior Citizens Center in Buffalo, New York served as Keynote Speakers for the Leadership Training Camp held at Hilbert College on May 12 & 13. Dr. Triplett focused her presentation on commitment, responsibility and accountability and how it relates to leadership. Rodriguez discussed how understanding cultures and diversity has a direct effect on building communities.

Hilbert College held its 53rd annual commencement ceremony on May 10 and nearly 285 graduates rejoiced in receiving their degrees.

Commencement speaker Sister Ann Marie Hudzina, general minister of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph, urged the Class of 2014, “Choose to be a leader who seeks to touch the heart of the world. Choose to be a leader that impacts the world for the good.”

“Let your vision be your north

star,” Sr. Ann Marie said. “Let your vision give direction to all your relationships and undertakings.”

“Be a leader who demonstrates commitment,” Sr. Ann Marie said. “Be committed to being the best person you can be and honoring the obligations you have assumed. Be committed to making the world a better place for others.”

Hilbert President Cynthia Zane, Ed.D., presented the President’s Medal to Hilbert Professor and

Director of the Center for Excellence in Learning, Dr. Charles Ernst.

The President’s Medal, one of Hilbert College’s highest honors, recognizes faculty, staff and board trustees for extraordinary commitment and service to higher education, and for exemplifying Franciscan values. Ernst has been a faculty member at Hilbert College since 1981. During that time, he has served in many capacities, including Chair of the Arts and

Ernst Receives President’s Medal

Sciences department. Throughout his career, he has worked tirelessly to enrich the life of the College, most visibly through his supervision of the campus newspaper, The H-Files, for the past 15 years. He has also overseen the production of the college’s literary magazine, Hilbert Horizons, and in past years, organized annual trips to the Stratford Shakespeare Festival and coordinated a campus lecture series.

President Zane also bestowed the Hilbert College Medal upon Ronald J. Soluri, Sr. and Sister Emily Therese Bloom, FSSJ. The Hilbert College Medal is presented to those “who embody Franciscan values, demonstrate excellence in their profession or career, and excellence in community service.”

Soluri has served many years on the Hilbert College Board of Trustees and served as Chair of the board’s audit and finance committee. Sr. Emily Therese Bloom, FSSJ has been a tireless champion for excellence in higher education and for Hilbert College. Sr. Emily Therese is the Director of Ministry for the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph. She was previously FSSJ Associate General Minister from 1990-94 and again from 1998-2002. She served on the Hilbert College Board of Trustees from 1999-2006 and from 2011-14. She has also served on the Immaculata Academy Board of Trustees. Sr. Emily Therese has an extensive background as a counselor in substance abuse and addiction. She has served as Executive Director for the Allegany Council on Alcoholism & Substance Abuse and at Boys Hope of Florida, Inc. She was a Supervisor of Allegany Council’s Clinic Director of the Outpatient Program, the Residence Manager, and Prevention Education Coordinator. She was appointed by the Governor’s State Interagency Committee for the Health Education and Services Network as an Advisory Council Member, serving Region I. She was also appointed by the Director of New York State Division of Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse to serve on “The Task Force on Alcohol

the Gateway Drug.”Zane also presented an honorary

doctorate of humane letters to Sr. Ann Marie Hudzina, FSSJ.

President Zane conferred master’s degrees, to Hilbert’s second cohort of graduate students, in addition to four- and two-year degrees to graduates in the Class of 2014.

• Sister Mary Edwina Bogel Award to an outstanding female graduate in recognition of her character, intellectual achievement and devoted service to fellow students and the college. Presented to Samantha Sieg

• John Kissel Man of the Year Award to an outstanding male student in recognition of his character, intellectual progress, organizational ability, and participation in activities and programs. Presented to Joseph Pernick

Hilbert College's 53rd Annual Commencement on Saturday, May 10, 2014 was streamed live on the internet. It was the first time in Hilbert’s history that the commencement ceremony was available for live online viewing. It was also archived and available for future viewing. The ceremony was streamed using Boxcast technology (also used by our athletics department to stream athletic events). Did you miss commencement? 2014 scholarship golf tournament

The 24th Annual Hilbert College Scholarship Golf Tournament was Monday, June 23 at Orchard Park Country Club and was Hilbert’s most successful golf tournament in its 24-year history with net proceeds donated exceeding $100,000 for the first time.

Thanks to the leadership of the golf tournament chair, Ann Swan, Executive Director of the William E. and Ann L. Swan Foundation, and primary sponsors: NOCO, GEICO, Goya, Ingram Micro, and West Herr Automotive Group, direct

scholarship support over the last two years from the tournament has grown by over $25,000. This event has raised over $1.1 million over its history.

All of the money raised at the golf tournament goes to scholarships for deserving students which helps to keep Hilbert College the most affordable four-year, private college in Western New York.

Hilbert President Cynthia Zane addressed the nearly 200 golfers and guests. “Thanks to the generous support that our golf

tournament has received this year,” she said, “we will be able to continue to provide Hilbert students with the scholarships they deserve and help to decrease their burden.”

Many people visit India to see interesting sights such as the Taj Mahal in Agra or the Golden Temple at Amritsar. Others go to learn about Indian culture and life. However, there are parts of India which most tourists don’t see. In March of 2013, Ryan Lamb ’12 chose the road less travelled to the unseen India. He served as executive assistant to the president with Operation ASHA after graduating from Hilbert College.

Ryan studied political science at Hilbert and was impacted the most by his advisor Dr. Andrew Kolin. Ryan credits Dr. Kolin with helping him to think critically and see the world at more than just face value. He also encouraged Ryan to see that he truly wanted to make an impact in the world and make a difference in people’s lives. This, along with the courses he took at Hilbert, such as, civil liberties and human rights, is what ultimately led him to accept a job working with Operation ASHA.

Operation ASHA is a non-profit agency based in New Delhi that provides medical treatment for tuberculosis (TB) for affected people living in the slums and rural areas of India and Cambodia. Ryan was able to have this opportunity through an Indian friend who knew he wanted to do something for others. He was then able to meet and arrange his service term with the president of Operation ASHA when she was in Buffalo. He moved to New Delhi where he stayed with a native for 11 months.

One of Ryan’s duties was to take reporters and government officials to the ASHA clinics, located in the slums, where TB patients can go for their daily medicine and regimens. He showed them how the clinics work and the process by which patients receive treatment. “I met with the Finance Minister of India and was also fortunate enough to meet some other high ranking people,” Ryan said.

The most surprising thing to Ryan during his time spent there was the conditions in which the Indians

lived. “The poverty, it’s unreal. These slums are like the size of towns,” Lamb said. “These people live in shanty cardboard box houses and it’s really sad.” With the way India’s caste system is set up it does not allow for poor citizens to be able to get out of poverty. Ryan had to learn to adjust his own lifestyle while living in New Delhi which gave him a new appreciation for basics, like clean water. “The amenities were like a luxury,” he said. “You couldn’t drink water out of the tap. A lot of the living there was really difficult.”

Ryan’s experience in India added a whole new dimension to his life. “I enjoyed experiencing first- hand helping out people and making a difference rather than just sitting at home thinking about how I would like to get involved with something like that. It’s actually going out and doing it. I was able to travel quite a bit. I was all over India and I went to Thailand, Dubai, and Nepal,” he explained. “It really impacted me and it’s a life- changing experience that’s for sure. You get to see the world in a whole different way.”

Although no longer living in India, Ryan continues to keep ties with Operation ASHA. He hopes to get involved with some non-profit programs in Buffalo, NY. His goal for the future is to travel and live overseas investing his time helping others.

Hilbert College will be hosting a week's worth of events leading up to Homecoming/Alumni Weekend on September 26-27, 2014.

We have many exciting activities planned throughout the week which kicks off with parent’s weekend. There will also be Buffalo Laboratory Theater’s performance of Gidion’s Knot in Swan Auditorium, various residential life activities, athletic events, and Fall Fest that week.

Alumni are invited to attend the ninth annual San Damiano Awards reception & Classic Evening event as part of the formal night for current and former trustees, faculty and staff, and alumni on Friday, September 26th from 5:30-8:30pm. The Athletics Department at Hilbert College, under the leadership of John Czarnecki, is pleased to announce the recent hiring of Katelyn Faas as the new head coach for the women's lacrosse program.

Czarnecki said, "Katelyn's skills, passion, and potential stood out amongst the strong candidate pool for this position. A National Champion during her playing days at Maryland, Katelyn is an up-and-coming lacrosse coach that we are now fortunate enough to call a member of our Hilbert Athletics team. I look forward to working with her in her administrative capacity as well as watching her bring our women's lacrosse team to the next level."

Faas will use her previous experiences both as a player and as a graduate assistant coach, to mold the Hawks lacrosse program into winners. "I know the sacrifices a college athlete has to make in order to be successful, just as I understand the commitment a college coach must make to their players and program. With my determination, drive and passion for the game, I look forward to taking the program to the next level."

Faas, a Rochester, NY native, brings a winning attitude to Hilbert. She was a super-senior at the University of Maryland when the Terps won the Division I National Championship in 2010. The two previous seasons, Maryland finished as one of the top teams in the country, making it to the Final Four in 2009 and Elite Eight in 2008. Faas red-shirted her fourth year due to an ACL injury in 2009 and battled back physically to contribute to the program's national championship in 2010.

Faas attended St. Bonaventure University her first two years after high school (2005-06, 06-07) and then made a tough decision to change her academic field of study which led to the transfer to Maryland and the ACC league. Even in Olean, the attacker was a dominating athlete on the field. She earned several post-season honors from the Atlantic 10 conference: Offensive Player of the Year (2007), All Rookie Team (2006), 1st Team All-Conference

At the conclusion of her athletic career, Faas moved to the sidelines and accepted a Sport Administration Graduate Assistantship at Canisius College (Buffalo, NY) and served as an assistant coach in the women's lacrosse program during her two-year assignment. While there, the Griffs won back-to-back Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships and moved on into the NCAA tourney, something Faas was familiar with as a player.

Faas gained teaching and coaching experiences even while in college as an undergraduate. She worked numerous lacrosse camps either as a director or counselor since 2008 and most recently served as the head coach for the Hamburg Junior Varsity team (2014).

With her new full-time position at Hilbert College, Faas will be responsible for all facets of a Division III lacrosse program. She will also support other administrators in the Hawks' athletic department coordinating all transportation needs for the 13 athletic programs and serve as the primary administrator for the summer camps.

Faas graduated from the University Of Maryland with a bachelors of arts degree in kinesiology in 2010. She picked up a master in sport administration from Canisius College in 2013 and served as an adjunct professor at Canisius teaching a Sport and Recreation Law class in 2013.

Most recently Faas was employed as Fitness Professional at Omega Health and Wellness in Buffalo.

John Czarnecki, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Hilbert College, announced Matt Glowacki as the next head coach for the Hilbert baseball team. Glowacki returns for his fourth season with the program, having served as one of the Hawks' assistant coaches since arriving on campus in 2011. "Matt has been a part of the Hilbert baseball program for the past three years and has demonstrated the characteristics that we look for in our coaches," said Czarnecki. "He has shown a high level of passion and understanding of the game that will make him a great head coach at the collegiate level." As an assistant coach, Glowacki served as the team's hitting specialist. He helped lead the Hawks to a respectable .280 team batting average over the past three seasons combined. Glowacki was given additional duties and responsibilities from his former head coach, James Pernick Jr. who retired in May, and those experiences have prepared him for this next step professionally. Glowacki is ready to go and work a lot harder as the manager of his first collegiate program. "My goal from day one will be to get better each and every day. "Be better than I was yesterday" will be the motto for our baseball team and program. I'm really happy to be here, it's something that I've been thinking about for a long time," said Glowacki. Czarnecki continued, "I look forward to watching him grow even more and lead the Hilbert baseball team into a successful future."

During the summer months, Glowacki serves as a head coach in the Rochester Collegiate Baseball League (RCBL), which is a premiere summer league for the best college baseball players in the area. Prior to joining the Hawks in 2011, Glowacki spent two years directing his alma mater, Niagara Catholic High School (Niagara Falls, NY) baseball team where he served as the head coach in 2010 and assistant coach in 2009. In 2011, Glowacki spent one season at St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute (Kenmore, NY) and helped the Marauders to a league-best .329 team batting average. Glowacki has also managed premiere showcase and elite summer baseball teams the past several years and earned many championships, tournaments and one New York state title to his name. Glowacki graduated with his bachelor's degree in sports management from Medaille College (2010) and a master's degree in physical education/sports psychology from Canisius College in 2013.

John Czarnecki is pleased to announce the recent hiring of Liam Friedman as Hilbert College's new head golf coach. Friedman, an Assistant Golf Professional at the Orchard Park Country Club, will lead the 2014 Hawks golf program when they open their season in late August. "We are all excited to welcome Liam and his organizational, teaching and management abilities," said Czarnecki. "Our current student-athletes and future recruits will benefit from Liam's impressive collegiate experiences and his current responsibilities that go hand-in-hand with building a competitive golf program." Since 2011, Friedman has been at the Orchard Park Country Club (OPCC) managing all aspects of the pro shop operations and well as organizing junior camps, leagues, tournament operations and lessons. Previously, he performed similar duties at the River Oaks Golf Club in Grand Island, NY (2010). During the winter months, when not in Western New York at the OPCC, Friedman travels to South Florida and plays on various professional mini-tours, and gives instruction to many professionals and amateurs. Friedman finished his collegiate career as the #3 ranked individual player in NCAA Division III (Golfstat, 2010). He led his Methodist University men's golf team to a NCAA

Division III national #1 ranking as his Monarchs claimed the 2010 National Championship. Individually, Friedman was named as a 1st Team All-Conference (USA South), 1st Team All-Tournament (USA South Conference) and a 1st Team All-Region player. One year after graduating from the Fayetteville, NC institution, Friedman became the 2011 Western New York PGA Champion and qualified for the 2012 National PGA Club Professional Championship. Friedman will take his own playing ability, and teaching abilities acquired from his years in the game and studying from great teachers such as PGA Tour instructors, Mario Bevilacqua, Jeffry Smith, and Joseph Mayo to form his coaching style. The Lackawanna, NY native graduated with a bachelor of science degree in business administration and a concentration in PGA golf management in 2010.

The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) today announced the 2013-14 NABC Honors Court team. Ryan Brewster and Trevor Stark, juniors on the Hilbert College men's basketball team, joined 893 other student-athletes from 335 colleges and universities across the country to earn the NABC Honors Court distinction. The NABC recognized male collegiate basketball student-athletes who excelled academically as they tapped into their talents off the court while in the classroom. In order to be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria. They must be a junior or senior and a varsity player while earning a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher. Ryan Brewster (Corning, NY) is a Business Administration major and carries a 3.52 cumulative gpa while chipping in 3 points and

3 rebounds in the 27 games played this season. Trevor Stark (Queens, NY) carries a 3.42 cumulative gpa in the Communications Marketing field. Stark was also named as an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) 1st Team All-Conference player while leading Hilbert in scoring (17.1), free throw percentage (82.5%) and assists (4.7) in addition to grabbing almost two steals per game. This spring, Stark was also named to the Jewish Sports Review Men's College Basketball All-American First-Team. Both Hawks were recognized by the AMCC as Individual Academic Peak Performers and as Academic All-Conference team members during the 2013-14 year. Brewster and Stark were inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma National Athlete Honor Society in May.

Individual fundamental skills and improved physical strength are off-season goals for most college athletes. But earlier this summer, Hilbert College's Harlie Decker was focused on representing the USA women's lacrosse program as she was exposed to different cultures and international competition when she traveled to Europe for 10 days. Decker was nominated for the team by Erin Robson, the head coach for the Hilbert women's lacrosse program the last two seasons. Decker joined her two USA coaches and fifteen other Division II and III collegiate athletes at JFK Airport before they flew to Berlin, Germany on June 20th. Upon their arrival in Berlin, the USA squad's schedule allowed two days of sightseeing before they played their first game against Germany the second evening. Decker and her teammates shutout Germany winning 22-0 and were pumped for the rest of their games. The team took a train to Prague in the Czech Republic and prepared for their longest tournament schedule. The three-day agenda was Decker's favorite because Prague was such a beautiful place to visit and the games they played were very competitive. On day one, USA beat a Czech Republic team, comprised of older, more experienced players, 10-7, before they easily defeated the Czech Republic's U19 National team, 11-3. On the second day

of the tournament, USA lost two games, both by one goal, to a team from Great Britain and yet another Czech Republic team. Even with the losses, USA sill held a first seed in their group of play. On the final day of competition, the USA team played for third place. Decker and her teammates held on for a 9-8 victory and were able to return to the states with an overall 4-2 record and a third place trophy. Decker said this opportunity was 'hands down' the best time of her life. "It was such an honor to wear a jersey that read USA on the front," Decker said.

Cleo Alexander '70 recently visited the Hilbert campus, which she noted has changed dramatically since she attended classes.

"In the spring, I loved to look out the windows at the beautiful, blossoming trees," Cleo remembered. "It was so peaceful and relaxing."

Cleo studied library science during her time at Hilbert and she fondly remembers Sister Tiburtia. "She was a mentor and a friend to me. Everybody loved Sr. Tiburtia because she was always so happy and pleasant."

Cleo still supports the mission of Hilbert with an annual gift and she recalls that all of the professors were always friendly and helpful. "If you ever needed a helping hand, they were always there for you."

After graduating from Hilbert, Cleo worked for 25 years as a library technician at the Educational Opportunity Center, University at Buffalo.

Hilbert’s McGrath Library opened in 1969. Sister Tiburtia Gorecki, FSSJ, founded and designed the library. Using carts borrowed from a local grocery store, Sister Tiburtia and other sisters moved approximately 40,000 books from the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse to the new library. The process took one week. Later that year, Cardinal Karol Wojtyla blessed Hilbert’s Polish literature collection. He would go on to be named Pope John Paul II. He was Pope from October 16, 1978 until his death on April 2, 2005. Pope John Paul II was named Time Magazine’s Person of the Year in 1994. He was canonized in April 2014 and is also known as Saint John Paul II.
