president's letter

When I moved to Western New York in 2006, I knew winters would be very different from the experiences I had in Cincinnati. I’m grateful that I had seven winters to “practice” before Snowvember and the continuing weather challenges that have confronted the campus into 2015. This edition of the Hilbert College magazine describes the extraordinary leadership of students and staff during the unusual (yes, even for Hamburg!) snow storm in November. For five days over 250 students were confined to the campus along with our maintenance crew, two security officers, and two resident hall staff members. The article features KaShara Jordon, a student cashier in the cafeteria, who stepped up, recruited volunteers, and provided food for those who were captive. We are so proud of all of our students who seized the opportunity to lead during this stressful time. Faculty, likewise, went the extra mile by maximizing the use of Blackboard, the College’s course management system, communicating alternative learning assignments to students when classes were cancelled for the week. It was quite the adventure!

You will find a discussion of Hilbert’s initial preparation for the April 2016 decennial Middle States Association accreditation visit. The Steering Committee has been developing the draft of our self-study as we engage in this important process. Stay tuned in the months ahead for the multiple opportunities to provide input.

Over the next few months, we will be redesigning the Hilbert College website. We intend to profile alumni that have experienced success in a variety of ways that traces back to their Hilbert experience. We know there are countless stories like this from our alumni and friends, and we encourage you to spend a few minutes thinking about a special professor who challenged you to go further than you thought you could go; a class that you took that sparked your interest; an internship or study away experience that deepened your understanding and commitment to the Franciscan values; an organization or athletic team you joined that strengthened your leadership skills. Help us tell your story. Reach out to us at [email protected] so we can share it with a high school student who is considering Hilbert College during their search process. The connection you make from Hilbert to your own success story may be just the inspiration that convinces a prospective student that Hilbert is the right place for them.

Hilbert has always strived to lead each student to a successful outcome. Everything we do is aimed at customizing the experience for each and every student so they will leave here having accomplished not only their own specific objectives, but also having prepared themselves for success throughout their lives.

Thank you for your ongoing support of Hilbert and may we all soon be celebrating the arrival of spring.

Sincerely,

Cynthia A. Zane, Ed.D.President

Ted Pietrzak has been named Interim Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Hilbert College, announced President Cynthia Zane, Ed.D. His appointment, which is structured as a part-time role, is effective through the spring 2015 semester.

Pietrzak has over 25 years of experience in leadership positions in the not-for-profit sector. Since 2010, Pietrzak manages Ted Pietrzak and Associates (TP+A), a specialized consulting firm that serves not-for-profit organizations. Pietrzak had previously served as the Director of the Burchfield Penney Art Center, where he directed and supervised all aspects of the organization. He oversaw the completion of a new 84,000 sq. ft. museum and a successful $36.6 million capital and endowment campaign. The Burchfield Penney Art Center obtained national recognition and Pietrzak increased operating revenue and balanced the annual budgets, which tripled in the new museum.

“With Ted’s more than 25 years of experience in not-for-profit fundraising, we are pleased to have a leader of his ability to serve in the transition as Hilbert’s Interim Vice President for Institutional Advancement,” Zane

said. “His background will be valuable in continuing the College’s increased philanthropic efforts. The institutional advancement department has undergone a transformational change, under Gregg Fort, and now has a strong foundation to build upon.”

“I am thrilled to be joining the Hilbert team,” Pietrzak said. “I hope that my experience with not-for-profit organizations, as well as my consulting work in fundraising will assist Hilbert in reaching its goals and even exceeding them. I look forward to working with the highly-dedicated Institutional Advancement team and my new colleagues across the various College divisions.”

Hilbert College will make a determination of the next steps in seeking a permanent leader for Institutional Advancement following Hilbert’s March 2015 Board of Trustees meeting.

Pietrzak Named Interim VP for Institutional Advancement

A variety of educational, engaging, and entertaining events that illuminate diverse cultures and traditions from around the world, including a presentation by Neil White, author of In the Sanctuary of Outcasts, were planned during Hilbert College’s Cultural Awareness Week celebration being held from October 20-24.

The week focused on how we move from a place of being aware of social justice in our community to a place of action. The opening program unveiled the college’s “Wall of Peace and Inclusivity” on October 20. The exhibit was made up of many unique pieces of cloth either designed or written by faculty, staff and students that expresses each participant’s view of the ways Hilbert comes together as an inclusive community and respects cultural differences. The event began with a welcome by Hilbert President Cynthia Zane, Ed.D., followed by a keynote address by Judge Craig D. Hannah. His presentation addressed “Engaging Community: Creating Change and Equity in the Criminal Justice System.” Following the event, all were welcomed to attend the Multicultural Dinner. It featured a performance by the Caribbean Extravaganza Steel Drum Band.

On Tuesday, October 21, author Neil White made two presentations, the first focusing on “Crime and Punishment in a Global World”; and the second he discussed his book, the Hilbert Reads selection, In the Sanctuary of Outcasts. All incoming freshmen were given

a copy of the selected text.A roundtable discussion,

“Reflections of a Hip-Hop Culture: Commercialism vs. Social Consciousness,” was held on Wednesday, October 22. The day concluded with a film viewing of Miss Representation.

Hilbert’s Cultural Awareness Week also featured a Cultural Bazaar with showcases, presentations and performances which took place on Thursday, October 23. The weeklong celebration closed out on Friday, October 24 with a Paintball Tournament in the Hilbert Quad, proceeds supported initiatives from the Disability Services Committee.

Cultural Awareness Week activities were free and open to the public, and were sponsored by Admissions, Academic Services, Campus Ministry, Career Development Center, Center for Excellence in Learning (CEL), Common Ground Club, English Department’s Visiting Artist Series, Hilbert Reads, Honors Program, Human Services and Rehabilitation Services Department, Institutional Advancement, Leadership Development, Multicultural Affairs, Residence Life, Student Activities, and Student Success and Retention.

As you are probably aware, Hilbert College is scheduled for its decennial reaccreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education in 2015-16. Hilbert has done much work already to prepare for this process, including our campus-wide Assessment Boot Camp, under Dr. Ron Eskew's direction. Below are some steps to the Self-Study and Peer Review processes and where Hilbert stands in relation to each area.

SELF-STUDY DESIGN

An Institution scheduled for its decennial evaluation first prepares a Design for Self-Study. Hilbert completed this document in the spring of 2014. At the beginning of June 2014, the self-study design received formal approval from the Middle States Commission and Hilbert's liaison, Dr. Christy Faison. The Design includes the rationale, scope, expected outcomes, questions that it intends to answer during the self-study, participants, and timetable for the self-study process. The self-study is intended to demonstrate how Hilbert meets the 14 standards - known as Characteristics of Excellence - that MSCHE has identified, as well as being in compliance with federal regulations. It also gives Hilbert the opportunity to identify areas for improvement.

THE SELF-STUDY PROCESS

Hilbert has appointed a Steering Committee to lead the self-study process. In addition, working groups that represent the campus community have been formed to study specific aspects of the institution identified in the Design.

The Steering Committee develops a draft report, based on the various reports of the working groups, and organizes campus-wide discussion of the drafts to ensure that input is received from all of the various campus constituencies. These discussions may be held in face-to-face sessions or through the campus intranet or both.

The Steering Committee then prepares a final Self-Study Report, incorporating appropriate comments and perspectives, and the institution disseminates the report according to the Commission’s guidelines.

THE PEER REVIEW PROCESS

The Chair of the evaluation team that will visit Hilbert College in Spring 2016 as part of Hilbert’s decennial reaccreditation has been selected. Sister Candace Introcaso has agreed to Chair the evaluation team. Introcaso is the President of La Roche College in Pittsburgh, Pa. She also recently was the Chair of the evaluation team that visited St. Bonaventure University during their most recent decennial evaluation.

Prior to the full team visit, the Chair makes a preliminary visit to the institution to ensure that it is indeed ready for a team visit, to establish the schedules, to clarify the expectations of both parties, and to ensure that the team receives in advance any basic materials needed to understand the institution and its context.

At the time of the evaluation visit, which will occur in spring 2016, the team conducts numerous interviews with

administrators, faculty, staff, students, trustees, and any other constituents that may be relevant to the self-study. The team members discuss their findings with each other and arrive at a consensus. The Chair writes the team’s report, which the Chair transmits to the Commission and to the institution, and presents a brief to the Commission that summarizes the report and includes the recommendation that the team makes for Commission action.

The Commission delegates to the Committee on Evaluation Reports the in-depth discussion of the institution’s self-study, the team report, the institution’s response to the team report, the Chair’s brief, and any comments by staff. The Committee makes a preliminary determination, which the full Commission then considers, approves, amends, or rejects as specified in the policy statement, “Range of Commission Actions on Accreditation.”

This so-called 'regional' accreditation is the most important seal of approval for colleges and universities, as it allows for student aid, such as Pell grants, as well as other types of government assistance. It also assures that Hilbert College credits are accepted by other schools for transfer or graduate admissions.

Student Activities while at Hilbert: SIFE

Current Occupation and Employer: Marketing Manager, Rosina Food Products, Inc.

Areas of Interest: Marketing and Sales Support

Favorite Hilbert Memory: SIFE activities

Favorite Hilbert Faculty or Staff: Mr. Heraty and Mr. Roland

My Hilbert education prepared me for: Life! Being able to handle whatever is thrown at me with confidence.

I use the skills, perspectives, and knowledge I gathered at Hilbert every day at work and at home.

Hilbert College introduced the Hawks Under 40 in 2013 to honor four Hilbert graduates under the age of 40 years old. This year's honorees are Andrea Corigliano,Thomas Doody, Michael Shriver II, and Heather Smith. The honorees were selected because they have made an impact in business, community, research, artistic, leadership, educational, and/or philanthropic endeavors and have demonstrated a commitment to maintaining a lifelong relationship with Hilbert College.

HAWKS UNDER 40

Corigliano, Andrea

Andrea CoriglianoGraduation Year: 2010Major: Business

Student Activities while at Hilbert: SIFECurrent Occupation and Employer: Senior Financial Advisor, Merrill LynchAreas of Interest: investments, budgeting, financial planning, hiking and running, My family! (my two daughters - age 4 and 3 - are my pride and joy), non-profit work, Buffalo sports Civic/Professional/Service Leadership: Pat Tillman Foundation, Phoenix Zoo, Big Brother Big Sisters, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Ride for Roswell

Favorite Hilbert Memory: Too many to pick just one….Hilbert turned me from a shy introvert into a confident extrovert, leader and scholar. From sports, to student government, to classroom studies, there is so much opportunity to get involved at Hilbert. You just have to seize the opportunity and take advantage of it. Professor Roland and Professor Heraty remain idols, mentors and friends to this day, and I will never be able to thank them enough. The PEOPLE (classmates, faculty and staff) made the experience complete for me, and provided an education that went far beyond textbooks.Favorite Hilbert Faculty or Staff: Mr. Heraty and Mr. Roland

My Hilbert education prepared me for: Perseverance. The small class sizes put you in the spotlight…meaning there is no place to hide when assignments are due, or you don’t want to play a vocal role. There were plenty of classes (Roland, Heraty, D’Amico, Bernstein) where I didn’t necessarily come prepared, but quickly learned that you were going to take your lumps if you didn’t. You have to fight through failures, take advantage of help when its offered, and be flexible enough to consider other points of view if/when your own just isn’t getting it done. This is the same with life on so many levels…you go into the job market overconfident. You’ll get knocked down more than a few times, and your ‘dreams’ may get sidetracked. It’s how you pick yourself up and respond from there that matters. Hilbert helped prepare me for that.

I use the skills, perspectives, and knowledge I gathered at Hilbert to (hopefully) better the lives of the people I come in contact with…even if it is in just some small way. Pax et bonum!

Chairman and co-founder of the Hilbert College Young Presidents Society. 2010 Hilbert College Service Award.

Favorite Hilbert Memory: My favorite memory was when our SIFE class traveled to the Catholic Charities of Buffalo Refugee Assistance Program. For several weeks during my senior year, we held classroom sessions for the refugees on topics ranging from economics to finance. The experience was humbling however beneficial to both the students and myself.Favorite Hilbert Faculty or Staff: Professor Pat Heraty and Professor Dan Roland

My Hilbert education prepared me for: All aspects of what I do today. Most importantly, my experience at Hilbert gave me a strong sense of confidence. My role at Ingram Micro requires interaction and communication with dozens of people each day, without the challenges I faced at Hilbert I would have struggled with this transition.

At Hilbert, I learned to look at the bigger picture. Hilbert not only provided me with a sound business sense, it instilled strong values and leadership skills that I use daily. Several of my former professors mentored me and forced me to think big in life, not only professionally but personally. I carried this philosophy over to my career by fostering relationships, thinking independently and being an example of leadership. Thinking positive and doing everything you can will take you further than you expect!

Shriver II, Michael

Mike ShriverGraduation Year: 2011Major: Business

Post Hilbert education: Master of Business Administration, St. Bonaventure University

Student Activities while at Hilbert: President Phi Beta Lambda, Secretary of SIFE/Enactus, volunteer with the Catholic Charities Refugee Relocation Program, recipient of Humanitarian Award and Academic Achievement AwardCurrent Occupation and Employer: Associate Marketing Manager, Ivoclar Vivadent, Inc.Areas of Interest: Traveling, scuba diving, running, classic literature, animal rescue, medical product development and marketingCivic/Professional/Service Leadership: Founding member of the Hilbert College Young President’s Society, Thrive Community Outreach Leader, The Chapel at Crosspoint

Favorite Hilbert Memory: I have so many wonderful memories at Hilbert! From the SIFE team being stuck on a plane with the Russian hockey team to the Taste the World event where the refugees we worked with modeled their traditional garb and provided a taste of their homeland delicacies. There was always something fun going on. Being on campus still feels like coming home, and Hilbert will always be very dear to me.Favorite Hilbert Faculty or Staff: Pat Heraty. Professor Heraty was my advisor during my entire nine year tenure as a non-traditional student. Selling medical devices full-time and attending night classes was very demanding, and I could always (and still do) count on him to encourage and challenge me to push myself academically, professionally, and personally.

My Hilbert education prepared me for: I can truly say (from any available soapbox) that Hilbert had a very large part in molding me into the person that I am today and preparing me for the life I envisioned as a teenager. From the smallest details of learning proper business meeting etiquette to developing entire marketing plans, nothing was missed in preparing me for my new career in corporate product marketing. I saw where I wanted to be and my professors helped develop and execute a plan to get me there.

As a student you never realize how much you really will use everything you learn, and how applicable and necessary it is when you get a job in your field. I still refer back to some of Dr. Floss’ research methods, and all of the business books Professor Heraty had us read are being read by the top companies in my field. Coming into an organization with the ability to immediately “speak the language” is invaluable to employers and I am thankful for all that I learned at Hilbert.

snowvember storm

It started snowing on the night of November 17th, a Monday, and it seemingly did not stop until Saturday, November 22nd. The result was a debilitating lake effect snow storm that sat, hovered over Hamburg, NY and Hilbert College unleashing over 80 inches of snow on the campus. Unable to keep up with the non-stop snow fall led to travel bans and the areas hit by the snow were brought to a halt.

Resident students sat incapacitated by the copious amount of snow. Unable to leave, security, residence life, and maintenance staff planning for the usual overnight shift remained on campus for 96 hours! TRAPPED!

The untimely and devastating storm turned into a tremendous opportunity for leadership, teamwork, and fellowship on the campus of Hilbert College. Not only did the maintenance, residence life, and security staff work tirelessly to keep the campus and students safe and the buildings operational, but many students stepped up in

incredible ways. With the rest of the dining services staff stranded off

campus, student worker KaShara Jordon was the lone staff member on campus to feed the snow bound resident students. With a group of volunteers from the men’s lacrosse team, including Brenden Deady, Nathaniel Hyman, David Santana, and Bill Moleins, KaShara and her makeshift crew kept students fed for two days. Although the normal variety of options was not as plentiful, food supply was never a concern for those stuck on campus.

With the help of Walter Iwanenko, Dean of Adult and Graduate Studies, dining services staff were able to make it to campus. Walter made arrangements with local police to use his large SUV to transport two dining hall employees from Lackawanna to Hamburg. They spent the next 57 hours on campus keeping all the students fed.

Campus Safety officers and maintenance staff were also

SN WVEMBER2014

2014-15 13

on campus around the clock, trying their best to keep up with snow removal while also checking on roofs, computer systems, and the safety of the campus.

Assistant Director of Residence Life Erin Ackerman and Resident Director Nina Pierino, who both live in the residence halls, also went above and beyond during the storm. They organized the resident assistants to shovel

emergency exits to keep them clear, as well as to plan events for the students, remove trash from the buildings, and keep students informed of the situation.

When the travel ban was finally lifted on Saturday, students joined in with College President, Dr. Cynthia Zane, to shovel out all the cars. Independent contractors were brought in over the weekend for snow removal in order to allow the College to get back to business as usual by Monday.

The stories of snow-bound campus fun continue to be discussed today. There is one tale of a student who had never built a snowman, so she ventured across the street to the Franciscan Sisters of St. Jospeh Motherhouse and constructed her very first snowman with the help of the sisters.

Before leaving for winter break, all resident students received a t-shirt - 'I Survived Snowvember 2014!'

The spirit of the Christmas season was celebrated with festive favorites at a special holiday pops concert performed by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra on Tuesday, Dec. 2 in Hilbert College’s William E. Swan Auditorium. The holiday concert was conducted by Paul Ferington, and featured soloists Karen D’Angelo, soprano, and Loren Silvertrust, violin.

As a way to say ‘Thank You,’ Hilbert College donated 50 tickets to the Town of Hamburg to be distributed to the town’s first responders and to those who worked tirelessly to clear the town’s roads following November’s lake effect snow storm. Hilbert also donated tickets to students and staff at the school that made extraordinary efforts while snowed in on our campus.

“We want our community to know we deeply appreciate their servant leadership and it does not go unnoticed,” Hilbert president Cynthia Zane said.

The BPO Holiday Pops has become a popular tradition in celebrating the holiday season at Hilbert College.

The weekend kicked off with the Ninth Annual San Damiano Awards Reception, which was paired with The Classic Evening featuring antique cars from the collection of Dan Gernatt. The festivities concluded Saturday night with a free concert in the Hafner Recreation Center Gymnasium featuring up-and-coming country artist Aubrie Sellers.

Other events over the weekend included, the Blue, Black, and White Affair Dinner; alumni games for softball, baseball, and men’s lacrosse; a Hawks’ tailgate with free hamburgers, hot dogs, sausage and more during the women’s and men’s soccer games; and a kids’ interactive games area with a bounce house and a dunk tank.

This year’s San Damiano Award recipients are Hilbert professor Sandra Augustine, alumna Maureen English ’83, current student Colin Howard ‘15, alumna Lauren Lukasiewicz ’12, former trustee Paul Weaver (posthumously), and Athletics Hall of Fame Inductees, alumna Amanda McHale ’08 and alum Jacob Opala ’04. 2014 San Damiano Award Winners

Page 20: Hilbert College Magazine Fall/Winter 2014-15

Hilbert junior Kylie Reinholz, the individual winner at the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship meet, was named as the conference's 2014 Women's Cross Country Runner of the Year. This marks back-to-back years that the Orchard Park native has been recognized on the short-list of awards given by the AMCC. Reinholz became Hilbert's first AMCC champion in cross country (individual honor or team award) as the first woman across the finish line in the 6K race at the AMCC Championships held at Franciscan University. Reinholz set a personal best the AMCC Championship with a time of 24:21. Reinholz opened her 2014 season with a 12th place finish at the Penn State Behrend Invitational crossing the finish line 20:16.9. She then, unfortunately, missed almost two weeks of training as she was recovering from a car accident. But once she

returned to the racing trails and pinned the competition number on her jersey, the second-year runner took three 1st place finishes: Meghan Memorial, Oct 4; duel match vs Bradford, Oct 9 and the AMCC Championship, Nov. 1. Reinholz place third in the CCOC race and broke the 20-minute mark for the first time in her career (19:36.2) Oct 18th at the Seneca Lake State Park in Geneva.

The men's basketball team helped clean and feed the community this year as well. While assisting the Criminal Justice Club's annual Adopt-a-Highway Program, four Hawks dressed in orange reflective vests and removed trash and other debris along South Park Avenue. This marked the CJ club's 22nd year in a row giving back to the community and working to keep it a cleaner place to live.

The Hawks basketball team further assisted the Buffalo City Mission by raising funds during their annual Tip-Off Tournament. The Hilbert captains presented a $150 check to the downtown shelter on behalf of the team and that donation will be used to serve 70 hot meals to those in need.

And the Hawks Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) was busy in the fall months planning and executing fundraising events for the Western New York Special Olympics.

20 SAAC members and their advisors (Kelly Starchok and Greg Peri) braved the cold waters of Lake Erie when they joined the Polar Plunge "Freezing for a Reason" cause on December 6th, which marked the fourth year the group found their courage at Woodlawn State Beach Park.

Besides the financial donations/sponsorships each of the athletes and advisors secured, the SAAC group also raised money the good old fashion way. The club sold 50/50 split club tickets, sold 'snowballs' for a chance to win an Ipod shuffle and hosted a pie-throwing booth. A total of almost six hunderd dollars was donated to the Western New York Special Olympics.

athletics news

Belonging to an athletic team and working together to reach common goals with other student-athletes is a wonderful experience. But volunteering and giving back to the community has been a rewarding opportunity that several Hilbert College athletic teams have taken advantage of this academic year.

The women's soccer program traveled to Rochester, NY in late September and helped raise awareness and financial support for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The Hawks attempted to spread awareness and prevention methods related to bullying with their special game-day balloon release prior to the kick-off against Thiel College September 20th. And they are still trying to create a world without suicide. The team closed the month of September as participants in the Out of the Darkness Community Walk in Genesee Valley State Park. The Hawks contributed to the almost 70 thousand dollars raised in the one-day walk.

On a cool, but dry Sunday in October, the men's and women's cross country runners directed traffic and encouraged runners/walkers who took part in the fifth annual Lou Reuter Memorial Scholarship Run. The Hawks found ways to keep the competitors engaged and safe during the 5K race dedicated to the memory of an enthusiastic teacher, coach and member of the Kenmore Town of Tonawanda Board of Education who served as a life-long mentor to many students and athletes a like.

The Hawks men's soccer team returned to Delaware Park in Buffalo September 7th and participated in their second Dash for Diversity walk which supports the National Federation for Just Communities. The $125 Hilbert donation helped to fund events that promote diversity through events, workshops and education.

Twice this year, once in November and again in February, the Hawks' baseball team showed their enthusiasm for working at Special Olympics Bowling Tournaments. The Hawks helped in a variety of ways by encouraging, guiding and coaching the athletes as they bowled for a few hours at the Thruway Lanes in Cheektowaga.

Hilbert's Ryan Ratajczak grabbed a spot on the All Conference Third Team which marked the second consecutive year the senior from Orchard Park was recognized for his talents on the greens. Ryan Ratajczak in his third year of collegiate competition averaged 82 strokes through five tournaments and led the Hawks all season. His best round of golf was actually at the AMCC championships where he fired back-to-back 79's

to claim a 7th place finish in the nine-team tourney. The Business Administration major secured his second All-Conference honor (2nd Team, 2013) on the links after previously earning the same honors in men's volleyball in 2013 and 2014.

Senior Matt Hamister was recognized by the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference coaches who voted him to the Second Team All-Conference. In only his third year of collegiate competition, the Orchard Park native ranked 4th in goals (13), 4th in shots on goal (30) and 5th in points (30) in the AMCC final statistics and earned a repeat spot in All-Conference voting. Hamister, a third-teamer in 2013, helped to drive the Hawks' offense (4-12-1, 2-7 AMCC) this season and along the way broke a few Hilbert College records which have been on the books for at least 10 years. He set new Individual season records in: Points (30), Points Per Game (1.76), Goals (13), Goals Per Game (.76), Shots on Goal (30), Shots Per Game (1.76). He currently trails the All-Time Leading

Scorer (recently inducted Hall of Famer, Jacob Opala) by 24 points, 7 goals, and 3 shots (all numbers to tie the record). Hamister became the Hilbert All-Time leader after two seasons in Hamburg in Goals Per Game (.64), Game-Winning Goals (4), Shots on Goal (58), Shots on Goal per game (1.76).

New to the Hilbert community and already making a lasting impression, Hilbert College Chaplain, Fr. Greg Jakubowicz, O.F.M. officiates a weekly mass at Hilbert's St. Clare Chapel and he held a 'room blessing' for resident students at the beginning of the Fall '14 semester. He also hosted the “Blessing of Brains” celebration to give students a chance to take a break from studying and relax before the week of finals at the end of the semester. Fr. Greg performed an individual imposition of hands on each student’s head as they were given the blessing.

HILBERT CHAPLAIN, FR. GREG, LEAVES MEMORABLE IMPRESSION ON CAMPUS

IN MEMORY OF DAVID MICHALCZAK || 1953- 2015 || David Michalczak began working at Hilbert in January 1971 at 17 years old. Dave's loyalty and dedication was clear throughout his 44 years at Hilbert. He was on campus during both the Blizzard of '77 and the Snowvember Storm this past November, for which he received a Commendation from the Board of Trustees and a Hilbert STAR Award. A testament to Dave's longevity and loyalty to Hilbert, he was one of a very few to be employed during all three Presidents' tenures. "Dave's pride in his work was always apparent in his time here," President Cynthia Zane said. "It was evident that Dave cared deeply about Hilbert and he will be missed by the entire campus community." "Dave was a very unassuming person whose talents with respect to maintenance were probably unknown to most of the campus community unless one 'caught him in the act' of repairing something that went awry in one’s classroom or office," Sr. Edmunette Paczesny, President Emerita, said. "He was very loyal to Hilbert; and during many of those 44 years of his service to the College was seen in the early hours of the morning in the winter plowing the roadways and parking lots. Even now when I see the amber lights above the truck on snow-laden roads from across the street, I think of him."
