MAY 2018
MONTH OF MAY May has a potpourri of events so there is definitely something for everyone. From concerts, shows, lectures, shopping events, pet parade, tours, dinners, lunches, historic sites and wellness events-we have you covered. Make sure to read over the newsletter well this month!
DISPLAY CASE For the month of May, we will feature our own Cypress Members. Pictures of members from different stages in their life will be displayed with a number. YOU have to guess who it is! Answer forms will be available at the Activities Desk. Once you are finished, turn in to Suzanne. A prize will be given to the person with the most correct answers. If you would like to display a collection or items, see Suzanne in Activities!
INTERNET/ART GALLERY DISPLAY Chuck P Duvall, MD is a retired practicing internist from the Washington, D. C. area. His grandmother and mother were part time artists but he never picked up the brush until retiring in October of 1999. He had a close friend and mentor who encouraged his painting and critiqued early works but has had no formal lessons or training. Work is on board often with a mix of oil or acrylic with landscapes, often from trips, as the preferred subject matter. Posted scenes are varied, from Mt. Cook in the Alps of the South Island of NZ to the Rocky Mountain National Park in CO. Also pictured is an Irish cottage, marsh scenes in fall and spring, and beach scenes. Photographs are of weather in the Serengeti and Greek Isles.
Connie Rathman is also our featured artist in the Gallery this month. A fractured ankle 20 years ago led her to a wonderful new world of color, paint, brushes, canvases and trips to Europe. There she took in the sights and painted. Over the years, she had studied under a variety of terrific artists. Check out their art and more about Chuck and Connie in the Internet/Art Gallery. If you are interested in displaying your art, please contact Annie Coughlin or Elaine Thomas.
ACTIVITIES CANCELLATION POLICYIf you sign up to go to an event outside of The Cypress that requires a ticket, you are responsible for the cost of the ticket once it has been ordered. If you cancel, you will be billed for the price of the ticket unless it can be resold to someone else. Thank you for understanding.

2 The Cypress of Hilton Head
Off the Tee by Estelle Roberts Go figure! April 14th was an absolutely gorgeous day but yet we had the worst performance event in recent memory. Our first 8:45am early starting time did go well. One player withdrew because of illness and two didn’t show. That left eight, two nice foursomes. The scores were 35 and 37 and not one player drove the green on the Par 3! I am loath to mention the winners preferring instead to name the 8 participants who were great to play with: George Carmody, Joyce Weidenkopf, Bob Petersen, Ed Deutsch, Warren Smith, Betsy Pehrson, Lou Mahoney and Estelle Roberts. Peggy Peirce was excused form providing her usual goodies. She is saving them for next month which will be her last as our Lemonade/Ginger Snap Lady. She is a hard act to follow but anyone living on the course willing to take the JOB???!!! Please Note: Beginning next month, we will meet in the lounge at 8:45am with play at 9am!!

New Books in the Library for May“The Great Alone” by Kristen HannahErnt Allbright, a former POW, comes home from the Vietnam war a changed and volatile man. When he loses yet another job, he makes an impulsive decision: he will move his family north, to Alaska, where they will live off the grid in America’s last true frontier. Thirteen-year-old Leni, a girl coming of age in a tumultuous time, caught in the riptide of her parents’ passionate, stormy relationship, dares to hope that a new land will lead to a better future for her family. She is desperate for a place to belong. Her mother, Cora, will do anything and go anywhere for the man she loves, even if means following him into the unknown. At first, Alaska seems to be the answer to their prayers. In a wild, remote corner of the state, they find a fiercely independent community of strong men and even stronger women. The long, sunlit days and the generosity of the locals make up for the Allbrights’ lack of preparation and dwindling resources. But as winter approaches and darkness descends on Alaska, Ernt’s fragile mental state deteriorates and the family begins to fracture. Soon the perils outside pale in comparison to threats from within. In their small cabin, covered in snow, blanketed in eighteen hours of night, Leni and her mother learn the terrible truth: they are on their own. In the wild, there is no one to save them but themselves.
“Little Fires Everywhere” by Celeste NgLittle Fires Everywhere is the latest novel from bestelling author, Celeste Ng. Set in Shaker Heights, Ohio, Little Fires Everywhere tells the story of Elena Richardson, a woman who thrives on structure and rules, and her family. When Mia Warren, an artist who has been living a nomadic lifestyle as a single mother with her daughter, Pearl, arrives in town, it threatens everything that Mrs. Richardson has known. Slowly, Mia becomes the enemy of Mrs. Richardson. Meanwhile, in another part of town, close friends of the Richardsons have adopted a Chinese-American baby, which results in a custody battle. When a fire breaks out in the Richardson home, the town is buzzing with their ideas on who the suspect is. Please Note** The newspapers in the Library are there for all Members to enjoy. Therefore, it is requested that newspapers not be removed from the Library. Newspapers are kept for one week on shelves under the New Books before being discarded. They too should not be removed from the Library. By remaining in the Library the newspapers can be enjoyed by all Cypress Members.**The family of Thomas Whelan would like to thank Cypress members and the staff for the helpfulness, kindness, love and compassion after Tom’s death. We have learned again what a great place Cypress is with this outpouring of encouragement and friendship. Thank you to each and every one.
