EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH

OF AUGUSTSANTAEGA FIELDS

Santaega Fields has been with The Cypress for the past five years. She works full time as a Dietary Aide in The Preston Health Center. Connie Altmeyer, Santaega’s Supervisor, had this to say in a letter about Santaega. “During the time when I (Connie) was out of the office, Santaega took over the

responsibilities of ensuring supplies were ordered, diet sheet updated, changes were made (sometimes there can be several during the day), and ensuring newadmissions were greeted and preferences obtained. Communicating effectively within the department to see that everything ran smoothly, as well as assisting in making sure there was coverage if someone called out.Santaega handled all of these responsibilities on top of her normal daily duties. She welcomed the challenge and rose to the top to ensure the department didn’t miss a beat in my absence. Santaega always strives to learn all facets of the department even though it is outside her job descriptions and consistently volunteers to take on more responsibility.”

Congratulations Santaega Fields, Employee of the Month of August, 2016.

NOTES FROM HEALTH AND SAFETY

By Jessica HuntGuess what’s coming…Flu Season! And, the Cy-press Clinic is ready, willing and able to protect us.The Cypress Clinic provides the high-dose Flu Vac-cine, the Trivalent, which is 4-times stronger than the standard vaccine. This particular vaccine treats three common Flu strains and is recommended for people over 65 years-of-age. Most vaccines take up to two weeks to become effective, and so the Clinic anticipates beginning shots the last week of September, thereby providing us with maximum coverage during the major part of the Flu season. A flyer will alert us to the exact days for the shots. Stay tuned…

September’s Dimension of WellnessHealth Services Here are some suggestions to prepare yourself for your next ap-pointment with your health care practitioner:

• Make a list of your concerns and prioritize them. Take information with you – bring your medication list includ-ing all over the counter and vitamin supplements that you take, even if you’ve taken them only occasionally.

• Bring your insurance cards as well as the name and number for all other physicians and medical providers that you see.

• Make sure you bring your glasses and hearing aids. Let the doctor and their staff know if you are hard of hearing or have vision difficulties. For example, tell them “My hearing makes it hard to understand everything you are saying. It helps a lot when you speak slowly.”

• Consider bringing a family member or a friend. Your companion can take notes for you, remind you what you wanted to discuss, and help remember what the doctor said.

• Plan to update your doctor. Let him/her know what has happened in your life since your last visit. If you have been to the emergency room, had appointments with specialists, or change in medical status, let your doctor know right away.

• Mention any changes you have noticed in your appetite, weight, sleep, energy, or memory.

• Be honest. It is tempting to say what you think the doctor wants to hear, but this is not in your best interest. The doctor can suggest the best treatment only if you say what is really going on.

• Share any symptoms. Be clear and concise when describ-ing your symptoms. Your description helps the doctor identify the problem. Questions to ask yourself about your symptoms:

o What exactly are my symptoms?o Are the symptoms constant? o Does anything I do make the symptoms better?

Or worse?o When did the symptoms start?o What time of day do they happen? o How long do they last? (Seconds? Days?) o How often do they occur? o Do they seem to be getting worse or better?o What activities do your symptoms prevent you

from doing?

Joke of the Month…YOU THINK ENGLISH IS EASY?

Submitted by Karen BrantI think a retired English teacher was bored...THIS IS GREAT! Read all the way to the end................. This took a lot of work to put together! 1) The bandage was wound around the wound. 2) The farm was used to produce produce. 3) The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse. 4) We must polish the Polish furniture.. 5) He could lead if he would get the lead out. 6) The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert. 7) Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present. 8) A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum. 9) When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes. 10) I did not object to the object. 11) The insurance was invalid for the invalid. 12) There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row. 13) They were too close to the door to close it. 14) The buck does funny things when the does are present. 15) A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line. 16) To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow. 17) The wind was too strong to wind the sail. 18) Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear. 19) I had to subject the subject to a series of tests. 20) How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend? Let’s face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muf-fins weren’t invented in England or French fries in France . Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig. And why is it that writers write but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce and hammers don’t ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn’t the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? Doesn’t it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it? If teachers taught, why didn’t preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats veg-etables, what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell? How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on. English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible. PS. - Why doesn’t ‘Buick’ rhyme with ‘quick’?

If you have not attended before, please feel very welcome to join the class for the fall. Each of the sessions stands alone and their aim is to have an open and free discussion where everyone’s questions can be considered, and ev-eryone’s participation is encouraged, both those who have lots of Biblical knowledge and those who have none!If you would like to join the class, please come and bring your own Bible. If you don’t have one, please call Sue and she will provide one for you. They use a small guide by N.T. Wright to guide their discussions. As the class will be doing only the last six lessons in the Fall, Sue will provide anyone new with a copy of the lessons. Remember - no Biblical knowledge is necessary to be a part of our group! If you are interested, please call Sue Britt, 843-681-7553.

A GOOD-BYE FROM ELEANOR MOORE

Cypress member Eleanor Moore, who had lived in the A building since 2007, decided to join her son and his family in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Years before Eleanor moved to The Cypress her sister, Cira Roche, was a member. Cira was a very talented artist who had a home in The Rookery before moving to The Cypress. Cira loved to sit outside and enjoy the view from her patio. It inspired her to create the oil painting now hanging over the fireplace in The Cypress Club House. The painting was left to Eleanor who now bequeaths it to The Cypress for all to enjoy for years to come. The painting will not only be loved for its beauty, but it will be a fond memory of both those who knew Cira and, of course, Eleanor Moore.

Jim Lochridge and Marian TaylorFor the month of September we are featuring two very gifted artists.JIM LOCHRIDGE: Cypress Member, Jim Lochridge began Oil Painting after retiring in 1988. He and his wife Dorothy lived in Latin America and Spain for many years before returning to Cleveland. Jim started painting as a hobby while in Spain where they spent many Winters before retiring and building a house in Hilton Head Plantation. Jim never had an art lesson, but learned basic oil painting from a book written by a well-known Spanish artist. Jim and Dorothy have been members of The Cypress for four years.MARIAN TAYLOR: Marian Taylor, a native of West Virginia was an Art Major at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia and a Commercial Art Major at Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida. She studied at workshops from Barbara Nechis, Judy Betts, Frank Webb, Bridget Austin, Nita Engle, Irving Shapiro, Wary Whyte, Joyce Na-gel, Don Theodore and former Cypress Member, Tom Ratliffe. Marian began serious painting in Watercolor when she moved to Hilton Head in 1993. She was juried into the Hilton Head Art League show in 1998. CYPRESS DISPLAYWe will continue our display

through SeptemberPeter Rohr’s Hand-Carved Wooden Boxes and Bowls

Peter Rohr’s interest in wood-working started back at his high school in Fort Lee, New Jersey, which had a terrific woodshop and teacher. The desk he still uses in his den here at The Cypress was made during those early days. There was some contin-ued woodworking during his career with Exxon, but it really was renewed when he retired to Hilton Head. Peter purchased a

wood turning lathe from a neighbor in Sea Pines along with his turning tools and guidance. The lathe was set up in the garage and over several years turned out lots of bowls of all shapes and sizes. Wood from the U.S., Central and South America were utilized, mainly Walnut, Cherry, Cedar, Mahogany, Poplar, Purpleheart, and Teak. These bowls are from the collection at his home in The Cypress and some have been put to use.In anticipation of moving to The Cypress, Peter shipped his lathe and all the cutting tools to his son in Pennsylvania. When he moved to The Cypress in 2008, he soon renewed his woodworking interest by purchasing a “Dovetail Jig” and starting to create small decorative wooden boxes with corner Dovetail or Corner joints. Some boxes are made of exotic woods such as Black or White Ebony, Zebrawood, Brazilian Cherry, Cocobolo, in addition to the U.S. sources such as Cedar, Basswood and Oak. The local lumber yards have some of the U.S. wood supplies available, and for overseas wood sources one uses various suppliers through catalogues or the internet. For special occa-sions, Peter gives some boxes to family members, but many or most fill the shelves in his den.Peter welcomes all to stop by at his casual garage/shop to see “works in progress.” Not much room for tools and wood supplies, but small wooden boxes are the answer for now.Be sure to stop by the Display Case in The Cypress Clubhouse Lobby to view this very creative exhibit.

Jerry Darnell’s Alice in Wonderland Needlepoint Pillows

This month Jerry Darnell will be displaying his handmade needle-point pillows. They depict the illustrations from the original book “Alice in Wonderland.” It was illustrated by Sir John Ten-niel, and his original drawings are held in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Recently the Museum worked with Ehrman Tapestry to create needlepoint designs of four

main characters from the story of the Prince of Hearts stealing the tarts. The four designs are the Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter, Alice, and the White Rabbit.

New Books in the Library for September

Black WidowBy Daniel SilvaBoth in regular and large print.Bestselling author Daniel Silva delivers another spellbinding international thriller—one that finds the legendary Gabriel Allon grappling with an ISIS mastermind.Gabriel Allon, the art restorer, spy, and assassin described as the most compelling fictional creation “since Ian Fleming put down his martini and invented James Bond” (Rocky Mountain News), is poised to become the chief of Israel’s secret intelligence service. But on the eve of his promotion, events conspire to lure him into the field for one final operation. ISIS has detonated a massive bomb in the Marais district of Paris, and a desperate French gov-ernment wants Gabriel to eliminate the man responsible before he can strike again.Acclaimed novelist Daniel Silva has thrilled, entertained and educated readers with eighteen thoughtful and gripping spy novels featuring a diverse cast of compelling characters and ingenious plots that have taken them around the globe and back—from the United States to Europe, Russia to the Middle East. From its shocking opening to its explosive denouement in Washington, D.C., The Black Widow reveals itself as Silva’s most timely and powerful novel yet. Following the success of his smash hit The English Spy, this electrifying thriller showcases Silva’s consum-mate skill and brilliant imagination, and is sure to be a must read for his multitude of current and future fans.

Me Before YouBy Jojo Moyes Louisa Clark is an ordinary girl living an exceedingly ordi-nary life—steady boyfriend, close family—who has barely been farther afield than their tiny village. She takes a badly needed job working for ex–Master of the Universe Will Traynor, who is wheelchair bound after an accident. Will has always lived a huge life—big deals, extreme sports, worldwide travel—and now he’s pretty sure he cannot live the way he is. Will is acerbic, moody, bossy—but Lou refuses to treat him with kid gloves, and soon his happiness means more to her than she expected. When she learns that Will has shocking plans of his own, she sets out to show him that life is still worth living. A Love Story for this generation and perfect for fans of John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars, Me Before You brings to life two people who couldn’t have less in common—a heartbreakingly romantic novel that asks, What do you do when making the person you love happy also means breaking your own heart?
