1911 The South poleroald amundsenled the first expedition that reached the geographic south pole in december 1911.

norwegians have always been active outdoor people. our environment is unbelievably beautiful, yet extremely demanding. now and then we have freezing cold, a lot of snow, strong wind, and rain. the extreme weather places high requirements on both clothing and equipment. people have survived the elements here for thousands of years by means of hereditary knowledge and generations of experience. this same experience is the foundation of all Bergans’ products. our technically advanced materials and our constant focus on development and design make survival not only more probable, but also increasingly more comfortable.

practical testing in extreme arctic and antarctic conditions has always been an important part of the continuous develop-ment of our products. polar explorers such as roald amundsen, lincoln ellsworth, and robert scott were among the first to use Bergans backpacks on their expeditions. in more modern times, team Bergans members such as cecilie skog and rune gjeldnes have continued this tradition, using Bergans clothing, tents, and backpacks on their expeditions.

1912 The South polerobert f. scott lost the race to the south pole against roald amundsen and died on the way back, together with his four expedition members.

1914 - 1917 Antarcticaernest henry shackleton led the endurance expedition which failed to cross the continent of antarctica, but nevertheless remains one of the greatest achievements in the heroic age of antarctic exploration.

1922 - 1924 Mount Everestgeneral charles g. Bruce led the second and third British expedi-tions to mount everest in 1922 and 1924.

ole f. Bergans’ brilliant invention of the backpack with frame in 1908 made Bergans a leading supplier of backpacks, a position we have held for more than 100 years.

the invention of the backpack with frame received a great deal of praise, distinction, and international awards. the word “Bergans” became synonymous with “backpack” in many countries (e.g. the usa, the netherlands, and china).

roald amundsen wrote a letter of thanks to Bergans in 1928: “i have on several occasions been using Bergans meis and Knapsack, and it has always served me exceedingly well.”

lincoln ellsworth’s father financed roald amundsen’s expedition to the north pole with the airship Norge. the condition was that his son would participate.

1926 The North polelincoln ellsworth & roald amundsen ellsworth and the crew onboard the air-ship Norge have been credited together with amundsen for being the first to discover the north pole from the air.

1928 - 1930 The South polerichard e. ByrdByrd started his first expedition to antarctica in 1928. the expedition comprised two ships and three air-planes. Byrd and his crew successfully performed a flight to the south pole and back to the base, a feat that put their names in the history books.

1953 Mount Everestsir edmund hillarythe first person to conquer mount everest (8850 m or 29,029 feet above sea level). he climbed mt. everest on 29 may 1953 together with sherpa tenzing norgay.

2000 Arctic Oceanrune gjeldnes & torry larsen in 2000, theirs was the first unsupported expedition to ski across the arctic ocean from siberia to canada via the north pole.

2005 - 2006 The South pole and Mount vinsonrolf Bae, cecilie skog & per henry Borch reached the south pole on 27 december 2005. on the way back, they conquered antarctica’s highest mountain, mount Vinson, at 4,897 meters (16,066 feet). cecilie skog thereby be-came the first woman to have reached the three poles (the north pole, the south pole, and mt. everest), as well as the “seven summits” (the highest mountain on each continent).

2006 “The Longest March”, Antarcticarune gjeldnescarried out the world’s longest unsup-ported expedition by crossing antarc-tica (4,804 km or 2,985 miles) alone.

rune gjeldnes and torry larsen spent 109 days and nights skiing across the arctic ocean, from russia to canada via the north pole.

mt. everest’s approx. 3-km high north face has an average slope of 55°. tormod granheim wrote the book På ski fra Everest (Skiing from Mount Everest) about the expedition.

rune gjeldnes wrote the book På nåde over Antarktis (Beyond the Poles) about the world’s longest ski trek.

2006 Mount Everesttormod granheim & tomas olssonthe feat of being the first to ski down mount everest’s north face was sup-posed to be shared by the two men, but olsson broke a ski on the way down and then fell in a climbing accident. granheim continued skiing and man-aged to find olsson’s body four days later. granheim then organized the first helicopter rescue of its time on the tibetan side of mt. everest.

2008 Great Trango Towerrolf Bae, stein ivar gravdal, Bjarte Bøe & sigurd feldethe second expedition to succeed in reaching the peak of the 6,286-metre-high (20,623 feet) mountain along the so-called “norwegian route”. they spent 27 days on the ascent and 3 days on the descent.

2008 K2rolf Bae, cecilie skog, lars nessa & Øystein stangelandlars nessa became the first norwegian to climb to the top of K2, the world’s second highest mountain on 1 august 2008. cecilie skog was just a little behind him. the joy of the accom-plishment was quickly replaced by deep sorrow when rolf Bae was swept away by an avalanche and lost his life on the way down. a total of 11 climbers and sherpas died on this catastrophic day on K2.

2010 Antarcticacecilie skog & ryan watersthe first expedition to cross antarctica on skis using only their muscle power, without a wind ski sail or other assistance.

the 2008 trango expedition was the first climbing team in history to successfully climb and descend the whole norwegian route up the great trango tower’s eastern wall.

cecilie skog’s exploits as a mountaineer and polar explorer are unparalleled. she has reached both “the three poles” and “seven summits”. no other woman has been able to match cecilie’s achievements.

Europe’s tallest vertical rock faceclimbing up the steepest route on the troll wall in norway is actually one of the most unnatural experiences nature can offer. all in all, very few climbers have tried to climb the troll wall in wintertime. neither had tormod granheim or aleksander gamme, but after they were joined by famous climber andy Kirkpatrick, they just had to try.

on 26 january 2013, the trio reached the top of the “suser gjennom harryland” route. it is 600 meters (1,968 feet) long, and it doesn’t go straight up, but slightly outward. this left the guys hanging in some sections many meters away from the rock face, forcing them to use rope and hooks in order to pull them-selves closer to the rock.

The mountain is approximately 1,750 meters (5,741 feet), 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) of which are vertical cliff.

1. Base layer The inner layer must keep you warm and wick moisture away from your body. The garment should be of 100% Merino wool and fit very close to your body.(Soleie Shirt, Soleie Tights)

2. Midlayer The second layer of clothing should insulate and be suitable for both high and low activity levels. The midlayer can be made from wool or fleece.(Park City Jacket)

3. Outer layer The outer layer must be windproof and breathable. At the same time, it is very useful if the garment is also water-proof. Garments in Dermizax™ represent the best we can offer in shell clothing.(Dynamic Neo Jacket, Rauma Pants)

4. Added insulation Don’t head out on a hike without heat-insulating garments in your pack so you’re ready when the temperature drops.(Deer Hat, Hitra Wool Mitten, Down Light Jacket, Glittertind 55 l)

1590 meters (5,216 feet) above sea level; that’s how much Bergan Castle towers over its sur-roundings. A mountain in Antarctica named after Bergans for the contribution to polar exploration and expeditions in the area.

128,7 km/h (79.54 mph) while skiing backwards meant a world record and a place in the Guinness Book of Records for Anders Backe, jibber on Team Bergans. The record was set on the landing slope of Vikersundbakken on 21 February 2012.

Cecilie’s achievements“The Three poles” – the north pole, the south pole, and mount everest.

“Seven Summits” – the highest mountain on each continent. cecilie and tore sunde-rasmussen are also the only two norwegians to complete both versions of “seven summits”.

The only woman to have both “the three poles” and “seven summits” on her list of achievements.

The first Norwegian woman to climb a mountain over 8,000 meters (26,246 feet).

The second woman in the world to ski to the north pole from the mainland.

The 10th woman in the world to conquer K2.

The polar princesscecilie skog comes from Ålesund and is a trained nurse. she has studied outdoor educa-tion at the college in Volda, has several years of experience as a mountain guide in norway and abroad, and has worked both as a glacier guide and glacier instructor.

“i rediscovered outdoor life in my teens, when i came back home from a year abroad. the mountains were punching holes into the sky and i wanted to pay them a visit. my visits grew more and more frequent. together with a sense of achievement and curiosity, along came the dreams.”

cecilie skog’s accomplishments as a mountain climber and polar explorer are unparalleled, and she does what she does for pure love of nature. in addition to expeditions where she has distinguished herself as “the first” or “the only one”, she is always involved in a trip. she either hikes along greenland’s ice cap, travels to the shetland islands in a Viking boat, or walks in the fields outside the town.

U.S. Outdoor Magazine named the Bergans frame number 11 in a list of the 100 most impor-tant outdoor inventions of all time in 2012.

Photo: Morten Delbæk

100 years of carrying comfortBergans has a long history as an innovative producer, and the whole thing started with the invention of the backpack with frame in 1908. ole f. Bergans’ brilliant invention made the Bergans brand a leading supplier of backpacks, a position we have held for more than 100 years.

as early as 1911, polar explorers such as roald amundsen, robert f. scott, ernest shackleton, and wilhelm filchner were equipped with Bergans backpacks. this very quickly helped make our backpacks world famous, and they soon became the natural choice for many expeditions in the 20th century.

the invention of the backpack with frame received a great deal of praise, distinction, and international awards. the word “Bergans” became synonymous with “backpack” in many countries (e.g. the usa, the netherlands, and china).

Glittertind 70 / 55 l – The pack with an innovative and award-winning carrying system

when you walk, your body makes lots of different movements all at the same time. the unique spine carrying system ensures that the pack follows all of your body’s contradictory movements simultaneously. a double helix-shaped frame in spring steel is the core element of the spine carrying system. what is unique in the design is that the hips and the shoulders can move freely, independently of each other.

Twisting – in addition to the upward and downward movement of hips and shoulders, they also go forwards and backwards when you walk. your shoulders then move in the opposite direction, which leads to a twisting of your torso. the helix-shaped spring steel frame does not prevent natural movement, but twists along with your body.

Lateral flexion – the helical frame allows the carrying system to bend both ways and shape it-self according to the body’s natural movements.

Shock absorption – the helical structure works like a shock-absorbing spring during walking.

Stability – the greater the movement, the greater the resistance of the spring frame. the range of movement is limited to prevent instabil-ity. you can also brace the system by tightening the shoulder straps and the hip belt.

Alpinist – Maximum comfort on hikes with full packour most robust long trip backpack has been completely redesigned without affecting its unbeatable carrying features. for several years now, the qss carrying system has been the trend setter in the development of larger ana-tomical backpacks. the fifth generation qss is lighter, better, and more comfortable than ever.

the pack is spacious and made to handle heavy loads. the load is distributed through shock absorbers which help minimize the strain on the spine and knees. the main compartment can be split into two separate compartments with a fabric divider that can be closed using a zipper. the bottom half of the main compartment can be easily accessed through the large front opening. the top lid can be raised and the side pockets’ volume can be expanded. the detachable side pockets can also be assembled into a practical day pack.

1 lateral stiffener stabilizing the load and providing freedom of motion for your head and neck.

2 the composite stays prevent the backpack from becoming cylindrical when packed, ensuring that the load will be placed as close to the body as possible. this promotes correct posture and prevents imbalance. it also ensures opti-mum weight transfer from the backpack to the entire carrying system.

3 patented adjustment buckle. enables separate adjustment of left and right shoulder straps. this makes it possible to adjust for misalignments in the individual user’s back.

4 stabilizing straps on the hip belt improve stability by pulling the pack closer to your body.

5 the weight is transferred by means of shock absorbers that reduce the strain, particularly on the spine and knees, when carrying heavy loads. the shock absorbers give the anatomical frame flexibility which prevents movement in the hips, back and shoulders from being impeded or locked due to the backpack’s design. they also control/limit the flexibility in the hip belt, which prevents instability in the backpack at high activity levels.

6 stepless, adjustable stabilizing straps between the top of the pack and the shoulder harness.

7 anatomically shaped harness that follows the angle of your shoulders. the shoulder harness has three layers; one layer of soft foam against the shoulder for optimum carrying comfort, stiffer foam in the middle, and finally a reinforcing plate to distribute the load.

8 conically shaped hip belt. padded with soft foam against the hip for maximum comfort and stiffer foam on the other side to ensure that the weight is distrib-uted evenly.

TENTS

“Helium Dome is extremely stable in windy conditions and is easy to pitch. The tent weighs next to nothing. I took it with me on my 1,800 km (1,118 mile) trip across the Antarctic.”

Cecilie Skog, adventurer and polar princess in Team Bergans

Photo: Fredrik Schenholm, Cecilie Skog

“Wiglo™ LT4 has been my favorite on a variety of trips. The tent is quick and easy to set up. The good support and storm flaps make it extremely stable in windy conditions and even in minor storms. It has enough room for four people with full winter backpacks. If you need to keep the warmth in, you just need to close the inner tent at the top and, in par-ticular, to lower it down. These openings are good on a warm summer day as they provide ventilation. To make a long story short, this is a terrific tent I’ve been happy with.”

Rune Gjeldnes, adventurer and polar explorer in Team Bergans

The room with the best viewanyone carrying their house on their back can choose the view they want to wake up to on the following day. as a manufacturer and devel-oper of tents, our job is to ensure that the tent is easy to set up and pack and that it weighs as little as possible on your way to the next lookout point. we develop solutions that ensure that you wake up rested, dry, and all set for a new day in your Bergans tent.

Down sleeping bagsdown is a superior insulator per weight and is therefore used for light bags. down is also softer and more comfortable to lie in and wicks moisture away from the body more effectively than synthetic fiber. down easily compresses for packing and takes up less space. the disadvan-tage is that wet down loses its loft and thereby its ability to insulate.

Synthetic fiber sleeping bagssynthetic fiber is heavier but cheaper than down. synthetic fiber sleep-ing bags contain a lot of air, which will cause heat loss. the advantage is that synthetic fiber tolerates more moisture without a corresponding re-duction in insulation capacity than down sleeping bags and can also be wet longer without getting ruined. a synthetic bag is the better choice for regular use in a harsh environment where you cannot regularly dry the bag.

Details & functions

1. filled channel around the opening (except on compact bags)2. heat retention collar as standard on all winter and 3-season bags. 3. inside pocket in all sleeping bags for safe storage of passport, money, and travel documents (not children’s bag).4. sturdy, full-length two-way zipper with insulation flap inside the bag. allows ventilation both at the top and bottom. 5. foot box with extra insulation.

The Birkebeiners as a group and a political party were origi-nally extremely poor. To retain the heat during the winter, they wore shoes made of birch bark, which gave them the name “birkebeiner” (birch legs).

Photo: Fredrik Schenholm, Morten Delbæk

The Birkebeinersnorwegian painter Knud Bergslien painted his famous painting, the Birkebeiners, in 1869. it shows the young heir to the throne håkon håkonsson, who in 1206 was escorted to nidaros by two Birkebeiners, torstein skjevla and skjervald skrukka. pursued by the rival Baglers, they escaped in a storm in order to rescue the child who would later become norway’s king.

Bergans secured the rights to the motif in 1945 and registered it as its brand.

The painting has subsequently been stylized as the logo now used on Bergans’ products.

ALLy CANOE

Page 49: Highlights Spring / Summer 2013

49

The Ally folding canoe has be-come a natural first choice for expeditions all over the world.

For expeditions – large and smallwhen you paddle, you experience the environ-ment in new ways. you glide calmly and effort-lessly across the landscape. forest animals don’t shy away from you the way they normally do. paddling can therefore be perceived as the ideal form of peace of mind.

some paddlers also seek the thrill of tackling waterfalls and rapids. it is then that you can really feel the enormous forces of the water on your body. you must then rely on your own skills and that the boat holds. it’s hard to prevent the canoe from receiving rough treatment and from hitting a stone hard here and there.

the ally canoe has a flexible structure that absorbs impacts and shocks. it can’t sink. the strong pVc skin is both sewn and welded and has an extra reinforced bottom. an ally canoe can be simply stowed in a pack bag and carried on your back. you can even take it on the plane as ordinary baggage.

up THE WORLD’S GREATEST vERTICAL DROp

on the morning of 5 june 2008, Bjarte Bø, stein-ivar gravdal, sigurd felde, and rolf Bae were finally able to take off their climbing harnesses. they were the first climbing team in history to successfully climb and descend the whole norwegian route on the great trango tower’s east face.

Page 51: Highlights Spring / Summer 2013

51

This is rock face climbing Mountain climbing on large granite rock faces that are several hundred meters tall and that place special requirements on equipment, technique, and climbers.

During expeditions, climbers can spend a month on the rock face without ever setting foot on flat ground.

Climbers work in two two-man teams. the first team leads the way up the cliff and attaches protection, while team number two hoists all food and equipment that is required en route.

Overnights are carried out in “portaledges”; a combination of hammock and tent secured to the vertical rock face.

The Trango Towers are situated in northeastern Pakistan and are part of the Himalaya mountain range.

Great Trango Towerthe climbing team spent a month on the cliff, lost ten kilos each, and finished by rappelling without rest for 28 hours. this was the second expedition ever to succeed in reaching the peak of the 6,286-metre-high (20,623 feet) mountain along the so-called “norwegian route”.

the east face of the great trango tower consists of two pillars set on top of each other and sepa-rated only by a narrow, snow-covered ledge. the lower colossus alone is more than 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) high. the world’s tallest rock face is completed by an additional 500 vertical meters (1,640 feet) of smooth and partially overhanging granite.

The 1340 meters (4,396 feet) of nearly vertical rock face are considered to be the world’s greatest drop.

cotton/polyester epic®

EPIC® is a windproof and extremely water-repellent cotton material with outstanding breathability. The cotton fibers are encapsulated in a silicone barrier that reduces the material’s moisture-absorbing prop-erties. This contributes to greater durability and breathability, reduces heat losses and drying time, and increases the material’s dirt-repellent properties. The process does not produce any waste products.

Before the time of modern shell jackets, cotton was the most common material in mountain jackets. Cotton is comfortable and durable. Mixing cotton and polyester fibers also signifi-cantly improves the garment’s durability and service life.

Bergans’ products in cotton/polyester have good wicking ability and feel dry even at high activity levels. Try one and you will understand why this is so many people’s favorite garment for hiking in clear and good weather.

fleece technical wool

Fleece wicks moisture away from the body and ensures effective insulation, thereby keeping you dry longer. Garments in fleece work well both as an insulating middle layer under a shell jacket and as a separate outer garment on days when it is not so cold. Suitable for most activities, regardless of their intensity, and easy and practical to pack.

Polartec® is a well-known quality supplier of fleece materials.

Technical wool is a mixture of traditional wool and modern technical fibers. The material is developed to further improve wool’s first class quality. The advantage is the material’s ability to regulate temperature and wick moisture away from the body, something that is of decisive importance when it is cold outside.

Pontetorto® Ecosystem and Tecnowool® are famous brands of technical wool.

tactel® organic cotton

Tactel® fiber is three times as strong, twice as soft, and 20% lighter than natural fibers and most other fibers. Tactel® fiber has good breathability and dries eight times as fast as cotton.

Cotton is durable and extremely comfortable. Organically cultivated cotton takes much better care of the environment and of those cultivating the cotton. No mineral fertilizers, genetically modified organisms, or hazardous and contaminating pesticides are used in the production of the cotton. Garments become even stronger and more elastic in combination with elastane (Spandex).

cottonfleece

Fleece wicks moisture away from the body and ensures effective insulation, thereby keeping you dry longer. Garments in fleece work well both as an insulating middle layer under a shell jacket and as a separate outer garment on days when it is not so cold. Suitable for most activities, regardless of their intensity, and easy and practical to pack.

technical wool

Cotton is durable and extremely comfortable. Organically cultivat-ed cotton takes much better care of the environment and of those cultivating the cotton. No mineral fertilizers, genetically modified organisms, or hazardous and contaminating pesticides are used in the production of the cotton. Garments become even stronger and more elastic in combination with elastane (Spandex).

Technical wool is a mixture of traditional wool and modern technical fibers. The material is developed to further improve wool’s first class quality. The advantage is the material’s ability to regulate temperature and wick moisture away from the body, something that is of decisive importance when it is cold outside. Pontetorto® Ecosystem is a famous brand of technical wool.

BACKpACKS

spine carrying system

The Spine carrying system has enabled us to ensure that the backpack follows all of your body’s contradictory movements simultaneously. A double helix-shaped frame in spring steel is the core element of the Spine carrying system. What is unique about this design is that the carrying system is fastened to the backpack at the center of the back panel, whilst the hips and the shoulders can move freely – the carrying system quite simply moves just like your own spine.

quattro staBiliZing system

For many years, the QSS carrying system has set the standard for the world’s most advanced backpacks. The fifth generation QSS is lighter, better, and more comfortable than ever. The QSS carrying system has several designs that are patent-protected.

hexagon carrying system

The Hexagon carrying system increases your freedom of movement, even when you’re carrying heavy loads. The hip belt has been designed to enable the hips to move more easily in rough terrain while keeping the backpack stable and comfortable.

Anyone carrying their house on their back can choose the view they want to wake up to the next day. As a manufacturer and developer of tents, our job is to ensure that the tent is easy to set up and pack and that it weighs as little as possible on your way to the next view point.

The tunnel tent is the most common design used in Norway. It is simple, functional, has generous baggage space, and is often lightweight in relation to its size. This is a very simple design that offers generous space and potential for low weight. Given its good ventilation and storm flaps, it can work well as a year-round tent.

The dome tent has a more robust design, with poles that cross each other diagonally. Most commonly there are 2 to 4 poles which provide a number of crossing points and higher stability. This design is frequently chosen for extreme conditions, e.g. in the Polar Regions or in the mountains.

down sleeping Bags sleeping Bags – details & functionssynthetic fiBer sleeping Bags

Down is a superior insulator per weight and is therefore used for light bags. Down is also softer and more comfort-able to lie in and wicks moisture away from the body more effectively than synthetic fiber. Down easily compresses for packing and takes up less space. The disadvantage is that wet down loses its loft and thereby its ability to insulate.

• Filled channel around the opening (except on compact bags) • Heat retention collar as standard on all winter and 3-season bags. • Inside pocket in all sleeping bags for safe storage of belongings (not children’s bag). • Sturdy, full-length two-way zipper with insulation flap inside the bag. Allows ventilation both at the top and bottom. • Foot box with extra insulation.

Synthetic fiber is heavier but cheaper than down. Synthetic fiber sleeping bags contain a lot of air, which will cause heat loss. The advantage is that synthetic fiber tolerates more moisture without a corresponding reduction in insulation capacity than down sleeping bags and can also be wet long-er without getting ruined. A synthetic bag is the better choice for regular use in a harsh environment where you cannot regularly dry the bag.

In order to get a good canoe, it is important to make your choice based on the canoe’s area of application and your skills.

Ally has divided its canoes into two main categories.

Allround canoes have a slightly arched keel line and arched, high stems. They offer good stability and load capacity and are perfect for trips and expeditions. They are easy to maneuver in rivers and rapids, but also work well as flat water travel canoes.

Flat water canoes are designed for speed and directional stability. They have a straight keel line and straight, pointed, and low stems. They glide extremely fast in the water without any noticeable drift due to side wind. Beginners will need some time to adjust, but if the paddling is primarily in still and flat water, they will derive a lot of pleasure from a flat water canoe.

First summer towards the North Pole

in the summer of 2011, cecilie skog and rune gjeldnes, experienced polar explorers in team Bergans, set out to be the first people to reach the melting north pole in the summer. the sleigh was replaced by a canoe, and their hope was to be able to paddle the greater part of the 1,000 km (621 mile) long trip.

cecilie and rune took five video cameras that for the first time documented an expedition in an arctic that was just about to thaw. this resulted in the fantastic nrK film Første sommer mot Nordpolen (First Summer towards the North Pole) which is available in its entirety on nrK’s net tV.
