Following up a 2011 presentation on "Asynchronous/Synchronous Learning in Online STEM Courses" I have been engaged in

two parallel strands of research:

1. developing and measuring the impact of guided, interactive exercises with step-by-step instant feedback on both

student "attendance" and outcomes for difficult topics in online STEM courses (goal to determine if this technique is

effective, especially as it is expensive to implement)

2. creating learning modules with differing modalities (text, audio, video, interactive code, etc.) and tracking self-selected

student "attendance" and its impact on outcomes (determine what techniques students will actually use and their

relative effectiveness)
