i think this is a hard time of the year! Maybe you do too? We have had an easier winter (by Minnesota standards!) but it was still very chilly last night. so, what to do to beat the winter blues?

The saint paul public library is a great go-to for late winter/early spring activities.

My personal favorites for children and youth:

• parents and caregivers of young children will enjoy attending our baby, preschool, and family storytimes. storytimes foster emerging literacy in our youngest customers!

• storytimes in chinese, hmong, Karen, oromo, and somali are popular.

• older kids and their families will enjoy programs such as saturday live! at George latimer central library and funZone! at dayton’s bluff library.

• pawpals brings trained dogs to some of our libraries where reading seems easier if a friendly dog is by your side!

• i encourage teens to check out the createch studio, which offers technology, sewing, drawing, and anime workshops.

• and homework can be less stressful if you have help! homework centers are located at six of our locations.

My personal favorites for adults:

• seven of our locations have dynamic book clubs which welcome new members. or maybe you are already in a book club? We have hundreds of book club in a bag sets with 10 copies of a book available for check out.

• open labs are for people who want to practice computer skills, write résumés, or look for jobs. Theone-to-onehelpatOpenLabsisterrific!

• Tax help does not sound like winter fun, but it is a winter necessity! highly trained aarp volunteers are ready to help you.

i hope that this winter brings you to the saint paul PublicLibrarywhereyoucanfindyourpersonalfavorites among the many services we provide.

THE ROSE ENSEMBLE DISCUSSION & DEMONSTRATION:

The Hutchinson Family SingersMonday, April 20, 7 p.m.Merriam Park Library

COMMEMORATE THE CIVIL WAR IN A UNIQUE WAY with this lecture and demonstration from The Rose Ensemble. Learn the stories told through the music, travels and political actions of a family of 19th-century American superstars, The Hutchinson Family Singers (founders of the city of Hutchinson, Minnesota), a group of pro-Emancipation traveling musicians as famous in their time as P.T. Barnum. One of the unheralded aspects of the Hutchinson

Family Singers--and certain forms of 1840s abolitionism in general--was the cultivation of interracial friendship and social protest. The Hutchinsons were noted and decried for their

performances to interracial audiences, and The Rose’s new research in antislavery music will provide a unique opportunity to hit the 19th-century campaign trail with such figures as Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.

“Private Violence” Monday, March 30, 6:30 p.m.Merriam Park Library“Private Violence” explores a simple but deeply disturbing fact of American life: the most dangerous place for a woman in America is her own home. Every day in the U.S., at least four women are murdered by abusive (and often, ex-) partners. Through the eyes of two survivors we witness the complex reality of intimate partner violence – a world locked behind closed doors with our silence, our laws and our lack of understanding.
