EXECUTIVE CORNER

Well, it’s official: The holidays are upon us!

This time of year always presents a chance to reflect and wonder about

many things; for example, how did we get here so fast? We can also take stock and think about how the past year shaped us. What was good? What did we celebrate? What road blocks did

life challenge us with, and what are we grateful for?

Personally, I am thankful for my family and the dear friends I have made throughout my life. These relationships are timeless and always fill me with happiness when I think about the memories that we share. Another relationship I deeply cherish is my history with Pond. Next year will mark my 27th year with the company, and every year I am excited to welcome new faces to our family.

As you know, one of our company’s core values is to give back to the community, and we do this in many ways. Our employees generously donate to the Wounded Warrior Project, and your contributions are matched by the firm. We also give back through volunteerism and mentoring others within professional associations. We all play an important part in keeping the core values of the firm vibrant and at the forefront of our interactions with clients and friends. I enjoy learning about some of the individual commitments that Pond employees have to selfless acts of kindness. For some, this level of commitment is staggering.

For example, Chris Jenkins commits every year to organize Pond’s CANstruction entry. While it exhibits our design and engineering prowess, the competition literally provides tons of food for the Atlanta Community Food Bank, so those with so little can have food on their table in the winter months. Pond’s commitment to CANstruction is deeply rooted in our company culture; from the staff competitions, to the team that donates time to build the sculpture each year… Hundreds of people benefit from your collective generosity!Through years of hard work and dedication, Jim Turner has earned the position of Skilled Supervisor for Habitat for Humanity. Jim organizes teams of people and together, they

build homes where families can begin and nurture their own holiday memories and traditions.

And if we didn’t think George Fragulis was busy enough managing projects and welcoming his third daughter, he also volunteers for Engineers Without Borders. This organization puts great minds to work on some of the most pressing issues around the world; things we take for granted like water, sanitation and power.

Just this week, Tyler Neal sent an invitation to all of us to volunteer with Pride for Parents. This program provides parents who are struggling with making ends meet an opportunity to provide holiday gifts for their children at a greatly reduced cost. Being able to do so gives these parents a sense of pride and ownership, and their kids experience the joy of opening a brand new present that’s just for them.

Mark Susa and his family donate their time to Wreaths Across America and lay holiday wreaths for fallen soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. This gracious act provides families across America the comfort of knowing their loved ones who sacrificed everything are not forgotten. Last year they laid 7 wreaths for Pond employees’ family members, and will participate again this year on December 12.

Maybe climbing on roofs or stacking rows of canned goods isn’t your way of choice to give back to the community; however, think about how you CAN make a difference this holiday season, large or small. Throw an extra dollar or two in the Salvation Army red kettle as you shop; donate some old towels to your local Humane Society; or, Toys for Tots is always a great opportunity to share some holiday joy!

Most importantly, count your blessings. Be thankful for your family, friends, health, and the fact that you work with a great family who believes that the “Spirit of Giving” is universal. n

Happy Holidays!

Tony Parker, President

POND GEOSPATIALA more efficient & accurate management of existing infrastructure.

Geospatial technology refers to equipment and methodology u s e d i n v i s u a l i z a t i o n ,

measurement and analysis of earth’s features and human societies. This typically includes utilization of systems such as GPS (Global Positioning System), Remote Sensing and GIS (Geographic Information Systems). These systems are great tools individually, but together they provide a powerful, efficient and unique solution to everyday challenges.

GPS is a global satellite navigation system that provides the exact location, velocity, and time information 24 hours a day. This system of 24 GPS Satellites was developed by the United States government and became fully functional just 20 years ago in 1995. This technology has greatly expanded the capabilities of public and private industries to accurately locate their assets.

Remote Sensing is the acquisition of information about an object without having to physically make contact with the object. This provides an efficient manner of data collection when on-site observation is not feasible. More specifically in the realm of geospatial

technology, remote sensing refers to the use of aerial sensor technologies to detect and classify the landscape of the earth (atmospheric, surface and ocean). This includes products such as aerial imagery and LiDAR. These datasets identify the topology, layout of the physical environment, in which assets are located.

GIS lets us visualize, question, analyze and interpret geographically located data to understand relationships, patterns, and trends within the data. GIS allows users to display many different kinds of data on one map (such as elevation, electrical utilities, street data and buildings). This display of information enables users to analyze their options and make prompt and informed decisions.

GIS allows users to display many different kinds of data on one map (such as elevation, electrical utilities, street data and buildings).

The current fiscal climate of our country dictates a need to do more with less, while still preparing for the future. Pond is

uniquely qualified to provide geospatial technology-based applications for more efficient and accurate management of existing infrastructure. These efforts, accompanied with sound planning ingenuities in both short-term and long-term, allow our clients to envision the future now.

Pond Geospatial integrates the use of GPS, Remote Sensing Techniques and GIS to acquire and develop a foundation of vertical and horizontal infrastructure data for all projects.

In order to achieve a firm baseline of information for planning and design initiatives, Pond Geospatial integrates the use of GPS, Remote Sensing Techniques and GIS to acquire and develop a foundation of vertical and horizontal infrastructure data for all projects. These data sources are standardized and incorporated into spatial analysis and stand-alone application systems to best support, grow and visualize our clients’ future goals. Pond Geospatial provides the following services:

New England!Pond Blitzes

(No, not the Patriots, the region!)

Over the past 20 years, Pond has worked across the country providing support to

our National Guard clients, with the vast majority of that work being centered around our presence in the Southeast US. Over the past few years, we’ve built upon that solid geographic footing and are now performing more and more work in “geographically dispersed” areas of the country, with ongoing projects ranging from Anchorage, AK to Jacksonville, FL and from Southern Arizona to Portsmouth, NH. This past summer saw an influx of new client/project locations for work with the National Guard in the New England region, and with that work comes some exciting opportunities for Pond project team members to enjoy some

of the iconic regional places, foods, and cultural activities of the northeast. Some highlights of the projects we’re working in the region include:

Burlington, VT 3 projects valued at $33.9M supporting their upcoming F-35 Lightning II aircraft conversion

Pease ANGB, NH 6 projects valued at $29.8M supporting their conversion to the KC-46A Pegasus air refueling aircraft

Quonset ANGB, RI 7 projects valued at $31.2M supporting their C-130J aircraft operations

Barnes ANGB, MA 3 projects valued at $13.0M supporting their F-15 Eagle fighter operations and air sovereignty alert mission

Hancock Field, NY 1 project valued at $700k supporting their MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aerial vehicle attach mission

Stewart, NY; Bradley, CT; and Otis ANGB, MA 3 projects valued at $550k supporting their Installation Development Plans for C-17, C-130, and Air Operations Center missions

So if you happen to find yourself assigned to one of these project teams, try to take some time to enjoy the unique “local” opportunities as you support the National Guard in Advancing their Mission! n

Our favorite success stories are those where an underdog competitor that has little

chance of success, and against all

odds finds a way to victory. A story that illustrates this is “The Greatest Game Ever Played.” Francis Ouimet is a poor boy who competes against the golfing legend Harry Varden, and others during the 1913 US Open Championship. The competition was rife with adversity, challenges, and failures, but at the end of the day, Mr. Ouimet was crowned the champion, worthy of the respect to be considered among the best in the game. This story has striking similarities to the business challenges that Pond faces as we compete with some of the largest, and well-known names.

As we strive to achieve the goal of 520 by 2020, we are reminded that Pond is also an organization with a history of success, and a future that is up to us to create. We are a team that values integrity, exceeding client expectations, and individual passion! These organizational traits are also the very building blocks that serve as the foundation of our health and safety practice, and much of it happens “behind the scenes.”

Safety behind the scenes begins when we accept it as part of our organizational identity, and becomes a personal responsibility for ourselves and those we work with. Developing a culture of safety interdependence does not happen by accident, no pun intended, it is the result of the efforts of many employees, beginning with a commitment from our Company leadership that is embraced throughout the organization. Safety excellence is initiated with the belief that all injuries and accidents can be prevented by

focusing on proactive safety actions, long before the projects are staffed and mobilized.

Proactive organization actions are not new to Pond, as they are common tools associated with executing our quality and profitability models. Now they will become the new norm as we look to brand Pond safety as a business discriminator within our industry. Here are some of the more popular proactive safety actions:

Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA)/Job Safety Analysis (JSA) based Accident Prevention Plans/Health & Safety Plans We develop profitability plans, quality plans, flight plans, blueprints, and hiring plans. Our safety success should be planned for also.

Share your Stories If we all share our stories during the planning stage, our effectiveness is increased and we can reliably protect our employees from recognized hazards as well as from the hazards associated with unexpected changing conditions. Start meetings with a safety story and ask openended questions to engage the team.

Employee Empowerment We all have the authority to stop an action before it results in an injury. We will be successful when we make injury prevention a personal goal.

Set Zero Injury & Accident Goals Make participation a priority by establishing personal, project, and office operational health and safety goals. “I will not get injured and I will not let it happen to those I work with.”

Employee Training Train employees to recognize hazards and how to implement safety controls. Train them on the importance of safety observations

and stop work authority. Show them the organization and personal benefits of injury and accident prevention. Host monthly health and safety training modules that are relevant to their current work tasks.

Orientation & Buddy Program Provide a specific health and safety orientation for the job they will be performing. Partner them with a leader who is willing to help the new employee to become successful, with a focus on health and safety excellence. This typically results in positive relationships, where they will help each other to remain safe and injury free.

Subcontractor Due Diligence Select team subcontractors who value employee safety in the same manner as the Pond team.

Newsletters/Blogs Develop routine team communications that provides insight into current safety trends, emerging safety challenges, and the safety achievements of others.

These are just a few behind the scene actions that are accomplished by many Pond employees, who are dedicated to injury prevention and the success of Pond.

I want to thank each of you for recognizing that your safety is only a small part of the bigger picture, but has a tremendous positive impact on everything Pond does. One person can make a difference, and you are doing it!Well done team! n

The Landscape Architects and Transportation Planners from the Norcross Transportation Community Development group developed the ACTivate Gwinnett Place master plan that charts a path for economic redevelopment to Gwinnett County’s suburban retail center into the County’s central business district and mixed-use community.

In the mid-2000s, when Gwinnett Place Mall began to lose retail anchors, some developers floated the idea of adding

residential towers to the district. Then the worst real estate downturn the region has faced in more than 20 years squashed any lingering ambitions to bring more mixed-use development to the Gwinnett Place district. Despite the economic hardship, district leaders continued to study ideas that could help the area adapt as retailers moved out of malls to more urban, street-level concepts, and more suburban companies relocated to more city-centric locales.

Building upon their 2012 Livable Centers Initiative study, ACTivate Gwinnett Place identifies catalyst projects for investment to improve transportation, connectivity and livability. With input from area property owners, local business interests, civic leaders, Gwinnett County leadership and GPCID board members, Pond’s master plan identifies an infrastructure framework that invites mixed-used developments, creates greater connectivity between commercial centers and enhances public green space. Five catalyst infrastructure projects frame Pond’s overall Master Plan and will determine the future livability, connectivity, and redevelopment potential of the area. They include: a Grand Promenade serving as a linear pedestrian spine of connectivity, activity, and greenspace; an iconic bike and pedestrian bridge; a signalized, circular roadway around an 8 acre park; improved regional stormwater detention pond; and an improved multi-modal Transit Center.

Fall/Winter 2015 | 11

LivabilityTo move away from an auto-centric existence to a pedestrian and bike friendly urban fabric, the Master Plan proposes the conversion of multiple-lane roads without sidewalks into complete streets with bike lanes, and dominant pedestrian ways.

Enhanced sidewalks are proposed along both streets along with landscaping and street lighting. In the long range, livability will improve when the intersection of Satellite Boulevard and Pleasant Hill Road accommodates increased traffic that will come with future growth. Again addressing both a technical and service need, the Master Plan proposes this intersection improvement take the form of a circular, signalized roadway, the interior of which could provide for a signature nine-acre open space/urban park.

ConnectivityThe plan’s key elements include a “grand promenade” trail network, an iconic bike and pedestrian bridge connecting with

McDaniel Farm Park, intersection and roadway improvements, and stormwater management solutions that can also serve as a public amenity. The Grand Promenade will serve as “the spine” that connects and supports all the subsequent catalyst projects. This promenade serves as a path for both pedestrians and bicyclists moving through the area. The width will vary from sometimes a narrow urban pedestrian way to upwards of 100’ and will be lined with public spaces for gatherings and different activities that reflect the diversity of Gwinnett County.

Another connectivity-related catalyst project, a 1,500 foot iconic pedestrian and bicycle bridge, is proposed to span over Satellite Boulevard and link McDaniel Farm Park and the study area. The bridge is designed to be a bold statement of the commitment to the vision of the Gwinnett Place area. The length of the bridge is meant to make walking or biking over a large distance feasible at a comfortable slope, and an enjoyable and memorable experience through engaging design. A

second connection to McDaniel Farm Park from Commerce Avenue is also proposed from Satellite Place offices that will allow users to visit the park along a multi-use path.

RedevelopmentAny investment in quality open space can be considered as an investment to spur redevelopment. The best investment addresses both technical needs and services. The Master Plan proposes a stormwater management solution that can also serve as a public amenity. Specifically the Master Plan improving the current regional detention pond between Gwinnett Place Drive and Venture Parkway. Expanding the current footprint of the pond not only aids in reducing unfettered runoff volume from the mostly impervious coverage of the site, but could also benefit the area by providing a passive park and wildlife habitat amenity, in this currently asphalt dominant district. n

Berckmans Road Augusta, GA

Safety Improvements Widening & Relocation

AUGUSTA/RICHMOND COUNTY

Pond is PM and Engineer for safety improvement and realignment of Berckmans Road.

This project consists of the design of a 1.8 mile roadway improvement and realignment. The project will widen the southern half of this road to three lanes and will realign the northern section connecting Berckmans Road to Alexander Road at Washington Avenue.

This design will involve extensive coordination with wetlands, historic resources, and community stakeholders. The design will accommodate the needs of through traffic, as well as local neighborhoods. It will include facilities for pedestrian and bicycle traffic, and will accommodate heavy traffic volumes and pedestrian crossing needs associated with special golf events. Pond is performing the traffic analysis and leading design work on this project.
