Southern Highland artists will hold their annual Arts Festival in November. Visit local artists who open their doors to art buffs and go to Gallery on Track Gallery in Goulburn for yet another brilliant exhibition and display.
If you have an interest in antiques, be sure to attend the annual Antique Fair in Robertson when Sydney and regional dealers provide a stunning display of antique jewellery, silver ware, glass, linen and furniture for sale.
Campbelltown City will hold the annual Fisher’s Ghost Street Parade as part of the Fisher’s Ghost Festival. Highlights will include fun for kids, carnival rides, fireworks and more!
In the northern Illawarra township of Bulli, in January 2016, the Illawarra Folk Club will hold its annual, award winning, Folk Festival. The event will offer an eclectic mix of music from a variety of cultures and styles.
We have three very special events for those lovers of fine music and theatre; The Southern Highlands Symphony Orchestra will begin another concert series in November and the ever popular Highlands Theatre Group will present RUMORS by Neil Simon. As well, IPAC will offer Music in the Mornings to celebrate the joys of Christmas.
Also in November, the township of Moss Vale will host the St Paul's Community Fair, so go along and support this school and community event offering food, entertainment, games, stalls and lots more. Festival features 170 actsThe 31st Illawarra Folk Festival at Bulli Showground from January 14-17 has a lot to live up to, but organisers are confident that the 2016 festival will be one of the best yet
Last January more than 11,500 music fans flocked to the 30th anniversary festival – a record - and organisers say that this year’s festival line-up will maintain the high standards that have made this one of the biggest folk festivals in the state.
“We’ve got over 170 acts from all over the world and Australia playing in 13 venues over the four days of the festival,” Artistic Director David De Santi said.
“Acclaimed Scottish singer-songwriter Dougie McLean is returning after his very popular appearances at the 2012 festival, while other international acts include The Poozies from the UK and Beth Patterson from the US,” he said.
The Australian artists include: • acclaimed Indigenous singer-songwriter Frank Yamma, a Pitjantjatjara man from central Australia who speaks five languages and sings in English and Pitjantjatjara; • Shane Howard who was the mainstay of 1980s folk-rock group Goanna;
• Neil Murray, who wrote My Island Home; and
• Ami Williamson, the multi-talented daughter of Australian music legend John Williamson.
The festival will also feature poetry, comedy, music workshops and dance, as well as a wide variety of food stalls.
Early bird tickets are available at www.illawarrafolkfestival.com.au

Rumours are spreading, that the Highlands Theatre Group, has every intention of ending this year with a bang.
Under the direction of Ebony Hope, their final production for 2015 will be Neil Simon’s highly acclaimed comedy farce, 'Rumors’.
The time is the late 1980’s. The place is upmarket, Sneden’s Landing just north of New York City, at the comfortable townhouse of Charlie and Myra Brock, who are about to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary with a handful of notably wealthy, self-important guests. As each guest arrives however, they begin to realise that something is terribly wrong.
Charlie, the Deputy Mayor of New York, has accidentally shot himself in the ear and is lying bleeding and unconscious upstairs.
Myra is nowhere to be seen and the food
remains unprepared in the kitchen, by the servants, who have also disappeared.
Has Charlie tried to do away with himself?
Where is Myra? Has she shot through…literally?
Could there be some truth in the rumours about extra marital affairs?
Who knows, but whatever the reasons behind these bizarre events, nothing could rival the elaborate and outrageously funny cover up, that the guests concoct for the Police, in order to avoid a possible scandal.
Highlands Theatre Group presents: Rumors by Neil Simon.

Over the year the gallery has hosted over 25 exhibitions and had over 60 artists, makers, designers and crafters involved in the co-op part of the gallery.
It is this unique approach to running a gallery that has proved so successful. Says founder, and local artist Hamish Ta-mé, "each artist contributes a small amount every week to the costs of running the space, in exchange they exhibit and sell their work with minimal commissions". Their location in the busiest shopping area of Bowral has helped as well.
Ta-mé says the choice of a busy commercial space was important, "we strongly believe that art should be a part of everyday life, we are literally next door to a butcher and two doors down from a baker, we did consider calling ourselves the candlestick maker" he says with a laugh.
When asked about the name Ten Thousand Paces, Ta-mé explains that it relates to the distance from the gallery that most of the artists live and work, in turn building their own profile and the regions creative community.
With this same vision of regional identity the gallery has recently added local wines to the mix. "We now stock literally every vineyard in the immediate region, that's more than 30 local vineyards and hundreds of wines" says Ta-mé.
There are wine tastings and education sessions every Thursday from 4-6pm and exhibition openings on the 1st and 3rd Saturday at 2pm. For more information or to get involved contact Hamish on 0428294569 or [email protected]
Ten Thousand Paces Gallery in Bowral has just celebrated its first anniversary.
The Arts Festival celebrates the work of our local community of artists and makers alongside internationally acclaimed talent.

It is the feature event of the Southern Highlands Arts Festival, a time to celebrate and enjoy all of the creative opportunities in the region – galleries, exhibitions, music, theatre, arts shopping and workshops.
The 2015 Art Studio Trail has 38 studios opening their doors and featuring the work of more than 50 artists and makers, including fifteen new studios. Meet the artists, see their

Summer in Wollondilly
20 www.monthlyimag.com.au
Wollondilly is situated on the south western outskirts of Sydney and at the foothills of the Southern Highlands. It is surrounded by spectacular, natural beauty and rural pastures in an area that relies on dairying and mixed farming. It takes in Bargo in the south, Appin and Menangle in the east, Warragamba in the north, Yerranderie Ghost Town and the Burragorang Valley to the west.
Historic Picton was originally called Stonequarry and was in fact a private town in the early 19C. It has a number of notable historic sites; Vault Hill, owned by an early settler Henry Antill, the old courthouse, built in 1864, a Victorian
classical stone post office with an impressive clock tower, dating from 1892, the CBC Bank (now the National Australia Bank) built in 1885, St Mark’s Anglican Church, and Larkin Cottage, one of the oldest surviving buildings in town.
Take in the breathtaking views of the Burragorang Valley, the waters of which are dammed by Warragamba Dam or picnic and BBQ at the Avon, Cordeaux or Nepean Dams.
Among the attractions in Wollondilly are Wirrimbirra, a local wildlife sanctuary and Trainworks, home of Australia’s oldest and largest railway museum.
Wirrimbirra Sanctuary, which is set in 200 acres of bushland, is a National Trust (NSW) property and is located between Bargo and Tahmoor. There are native animals, a native plant nursery, picnic tables and a Gift Shop.
Trainworks in Thirlmere, is a magical place to visit for the enthusiast and the young at heart. Step back in time to an era when everyone travelled by train. There are over 40 locomotives and 80 carriages on display, dating from 1865. As well, there is an exhibition of railway items and memorabilia, a signals display, an authentic fettler’s shed, and a heritage-listed 1880s railway station.

Bowral is famous for its country gardens and fields of tulips in spring. Just 115 km south-west of Sydney, Bowral has always been a fashionable destination for Sydneysiders and day trippers.
A highlight for cricket fans is the International Cricket Hall of Fame. Outdoor sports include fly-fishing on the lake or golf at one of the town’s excellent courses. Bowral Lookout is well worth a visit.
CharmingMittagong & Bowral antiques, jewellery and health and beauty outlets. Indulge the tastebuds in one of the many cafes, restaurants, clubs and coffee houses. Wineries are close by as is the historic village of Berrima and the shopping paradise of Bowral.

This year we will see School Sports Australia u/16 boys play a 6 match series against Pakistan’s u/16. Bradman Oval will host three 50 over matches, and two T20 matches. The University of Wollongong will be the host for a T20 ‘under lights’ match on Friday 27 November.
All games are free admission to the public, and of course the Bradman Museum and International Cricket Hall of Fame will be open every day from 10am to 5pm for a fascinating
and interactive cricket experience that all the family can enjoy.
There will be two legendary Bradman Residential cricket camps held again these school holidays. Tailored for young player’s aged between 11 and 17 years, the camps offer full board for 6 days and 5 nights
Our program runs both day and evening sessions and includes fun ways to learn game tactics, sportsmanship and technique. The professional coaches specifically focus on developing every player’s knowledge of how to adapt their game when transitioning from playing on hard surfaces to turf pitches. There is no better place to learn the game than on the same ground as Don Bradman.
This would make a fabulous present and opportunity for any budding young player. Visit
www.bradman.com.au for further details.

The 21st and 22nd November 2015 will again see the School of Arts Hall at Robertson transformed into an impressive showcase of antiques when dealers from all around the country combine for the Seventh Annual Robertson Antiques and Collectables Fair.
Traditionally the aim of a fair is to cater for all tastes and incomes, from the smallest thimble to a grand Victorian chest. Prices are competitive and the range of items for sale is enormous, enabling customers to view many different dealers all together under one roof, instead of travelling to many different establishments.
Georgian and Victorian jewellery, English and European porcelain, silver, glass, linen, lamps, collectables and furniture, both rustic and traditional will be displayed with great care and pride, the dealers themselves endeavouring to supply as much information as possible to help the collector.
The Robertson Antiques Fair will be a bonanza for the village with a great number of tourists visiting the fair and also visiting many local attractions such as our three local waterfalls, the Illawarra Fly treetop walk, the Robertson Heritage Railway Station Gallery , the Village
Woodworks that also incorporates the Robertson Guild art and craft display.
After your visit to the Antiques Fair there is still plenty to do in the village such as browsing through the many shops selling antiques, arts and crafts, paintings, books, foodstuffs and local produce. Also why not visit one of the many cafes for morning/afternoon tea or lunch.
Events like the fair are important to the School of Arts Committee who rely on income from these functions to maintain the hall. During the fair the ladies from the hall committee will be serving light lunches and morning/afternoon teas.
The Robertson Antiques Fair will be open to the public from 9am until 5pm on Saturday 21st November and from 10am until 4pm on Sunday 22nd November. Admission is $7 for adults and includes a lucky door prize ticket. Accompanied children are free. There is plenty of parking nearby and wheelchair access into the hall.
The Robertson School of Arts is situated on the Illawarra Highway at Robertson, right in the centre of the village.
For further information please call Mick Dalton on mobile 0428 446 534.

Moss Vale is central to Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attractions and only a short drive away.
The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an effort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes.
Some buildings date to the 1860s - 1890s, the Old Post Office. The Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of the 19C architecture.
The Moss Vale area was once occupied by the Gundangara people, though they had
DelightfulMoss Vale & Bundanoondisappeared by the 1870s, partly due to the loss of their hunting land to European settlers.
Moss Vale holds a large part of the Southern Highlands Industry - as well as being a minor centre for agriculture, many light and medium industries are found in and around Moss Vale.

Bundanoon. Early industries in the district included timber milling, sandstone quarrying and farming. Today Bundanoon retains many of its early 20C buildings and has a 'yesteryear' charm about it.
Bundanoon has its share of interesting craft shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, nurseries and picnic areas.
You can hire a bike, walk through nearby Morton National Park, enjoy picnic spots, native flowers and birds and see kangaroos and wallabies at dusk on the edge of town.
Take a walk to "Glow Worm Glen" and discover how the Glow Worms live and glow.
Bundanoon is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks; most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys. Probably the most visited lookout is the one overlooking the Grand Canyon 3km from the town centre.

Berrima is a historic village offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environment. It is a favourite destination for Sydneysiders, Illawarra and Canberra residents and has exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food.
Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. It is located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River. In the 19thC, the township was destined to become the main town of the Southern Highlands, but when the railway line was built through Moss Vale in the 1860s, it faded to a sleepy village.
The first Europeans to investigate the area
were sent by the colonial governor, Governor Hunter. With a water supply provided by the nearby Wingecarribee River, a town plan, in the manner of an English village, was laid out by Robert Hoddle. Few substantial houses were built, although by the 1850s sturdy Anglican and Catholic churches replaced the original wattle and daub versions. Licensed since 1834, the Surveyor-General Inn, in the centre of town, is the longest licensed hotel in NSW.
By the 1960s, the preservation of old Georgian buildings became of national importance to our heritage, so the entire village of Berrima was declared a historic village by the National Trust.
The most interesting period in the history of Berrima is perhaps when it became an internment camp for enemy aliens and POWs during WW1. This complete story can be found at Berrima District Museum as well as many other local history stories. After visiting the Museum (located on the right at the southern end of the village opposite the park) take the Berrima River Walk to understand the impact of the POWs had on the town.
Berrima is said to be a word from the language of the Dharawal people meaning ‘Black Swan’. The Dharawal were displaced in the area by farming and grazing interests and were rarely seen by the 1870s.

Robertson is the lushest of the Southern Highlands landscapes and is renowned for its rich volcanic soil in which potatoes are grown for the NSW market. Potatoes were the first crops planted in Robertson when a large parcel of land was cleared in the mid 19C. It could be said that this was due to the prevalence of landholders with an Irish background.
Robertson’s development followed the usual pattern of rural towns with churches, cricket and football teams, schools, school of arts and agricultural societies.
Macquarie Pass, linking the Highlands to
the coast was such a brilliant spectacle that Robertson soon became the eastern gateway to the Highlands. Local businessmen, eager to capitalise on the town’s potential, brought the attractions of the area to general attention; the waterfalls, gorges and lush countryside.
Each October, the Robertson Railway Station Gardens are ablaze with the most spectacular display of flowering waratahs in NSW. Visitors can stroll through the gardens any time and purchase a bunch from the Fettlers Shed.
The building known as ‘The Cheese Factory’ is a ‘must see’ in Robertson as it now houses a collection of shops offering cheese, gifts, craft, collectables and a cafe.
The Illawarra Fly turns exploring the cliff tops into a great adventure with treetop walkways, a soaring tower, a Zipline and sweeping coastal vistas from Port Kembla to Kiama.
The village is delighful but as well is an ideal base from which to explore a spectacular hinterland; it is recognized as the “green heart” of the Southern Highlands. It is a great place to use as a base when exploring the Highlands, close to national parks and half way between the coast and plains. It is within easy reach of delightful towns which are all great places to wander, stop for something to eat and browse through little shops and galleries.

OPEN 5 DAYS (CLOSED TUE, WED) 9.30 - 5.00 26 HODDLE ST ROBERTSON - 02 4885 2521
Following the closure of their Antique Centre in Sydney, Bill and Nadine, the new owners of Robertson Recollections, then began to look for a new site for their shop.
They were long drawn to the Southern Highlands as they often holidayed in the area, so when they heard that Dion and Mickii wanted to sell Robertson Recollections it seemed worth following up.
As they walked in the door of Robertson Recollections, they felt they were home. Dion and Bill shook hands and the work began.
As Dion and Mickii had the place well stocked, they had to put a lot of stock from their Sydney centre into storage.
Moving in at the beginning of winter was a bit of a shock, but they have fallen in love with Robertson. So much so that they have purchased the old hardware store across the highway, which will open about Christmas with something to compliment the Antique Shop. They are enjoying the shop, moving new items in weekly. Come on in and say hello!

Fitzroy Falls, in Morton National Park, offers scenery on a grand scale. Waterfalls, wildflowers, native animals, sandstone cliffs, lush rainforest gullies and sweeping views of the escarpment are all good reasons for visitors to include this area in a tour of the Southern Highlands.

The Fitzroy Falls Visitor Centre is open seven days and provides a range of information on Morton National Park and other places to visit in the area. Tourist information, maps, interpretative displays, souvenirs, local craft, annual Parks Passes and Discovery Tours (prior booking required) are available.
