Southern Highland artists will hold their annual Arts Festival in November. Visit local artists who open their doors to art buffs keen to see where they live and create.

If you have an interest in antiques, be sure to attend the annual Antique Fair in Robertson when Sydney and regional dealers provide a stunning display of antique jewellery, silver ware, glass, linen and furniture for sale.

Campbelltown City will hold the annual Fisher’s Ghost Street Parade as part of the Fisher’s Ghost Festival. Highlights include fun for kids, carnival rides, fireworks and more!

There will be thrills and spills early in January 2015, when Picton hosts the annual Picton Rodeo. This event is not just a Rodeo, but offers an event full of entertainment and fun.

In the northern Illawarra township of Bulli, in January 2015, the Illawarra Folk Club will hold its annual, award winning, Folk Festival. The event will offer an eclectic mix of music from a variety of cultures and styles.

The Illawarra Folk Festival will be celebrating its 30th Pearl Anniversary in 2015, and the engine room is full steam ahead with plans for the biggest and best festival yet! The highlight of the festival is certain to be the Friday night costumed Pearl Ball, where the weekend will kick off in style with a fantastically flamboyant concert, and run into the wee hours with gypsy dance bands and a sea shanty session guaranteed to tickle the sternest of swashbucklers!

Other special events include the inaugural fringe street band festival HONK! Oz, an extended program of youth opportunities, a new venue, The Odeon, featuring songwriters circles, our “It’s a Pearler” song and tune writing competition, supported by APRA/AMCOS, and a special 30th anniversary exhibition will also feature.

Set in the spectacular northern Illawarra Escarpment in Bulli Showground, the festival has 13 onsite venues and is a family friendly village. With superb music from 150 international, national and local artists there’s

also a colourful array of international food stalls, craft stalls and the festival bar. You can also camp onsite. There is plenty of carparking and Bulli Train Station is a short walk away so getting there is easy.

Fisher’s Ghost Festival Each November, the legendary Festival of Fisher’s Ghost comes alive in Campbelltown, showcasing the city’s community spirit and vibrancy.

Held over 10 days, from 30 October to 9 November, this year will see the return of the festival’s trademark events, together with the giant carnival and Saturday fireworks spectaculars at Bradbury Oval.

There will be a distinct Japanese flavour to this year’s festival, in celebration of the 30 year anniversary of the Campbelltown-Koshigaya Sister City relationship – one of the longest running in Australia.

The annual Street Parade will reflect this important milestone by encouraging participants and spectators to embrace the Japanese theme, as we welcome a delegation of visitors from Koshigaya to enjoy the festivities that our city has come to know and love.

This year’s Street Fair will be a hive of activity, with a host of street stalls boasting everything from tasty treats to must-have homewares, as well as a fun kids zone in Mawson Park featuring the GymBus, a petting zoo and stage entertainment for the whole family.

The festival also features the ever-popular Craft Exhibition, Fun Run, Art Award, Fisher’s Kids and the award-winning Fisher’s Gig – making it one of Australia’s most diverse and longest running community celebrations for people of all ages.

Steeped in tradition, the festival dates back to 1956, and is named after Frederick Fisher – a local farmer who disappeared under suspicious circumstances and whose ghost became a local legend.

With the warmer months of summer, regular visitors to the Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan, should take advantage of the early access privileges enjoyed by Foundation and Friends of the Garden who have foot and bike access to the Garden from sunrise to sunset throughout the year.

It is at these magical times of the day that the Garden is at its best in the summer time with stunning sunrises and sunsets visible from Sundial Hill, the highest peak in the Garden. Keen walkers and cyclists can enjoy the cool air during the hotter summer months.

The 22nd and 23rd November 2014 will again see the School of Arts Hall at Robertson transformed into an impressive showcase of antiques when dealers from all around the country combine for the Sixth Annual Robertson Antiques and Collectables Fair.

Traditionally the aim of a fair is to cater for all tastes and incomes, from the smallest thimble to a grand Victorian chest. Prices are competitive and the range of items for sale is enormous, enabling customers to view many different dealers all together under one roof, instead of travelling to many different establishments.

Georgian and Victorian jewellery, English and European porcelain, silver, glass, linen, lamps, collectables and furniture, both rustic and traditional will be displayed with great care and pride, the dealers themselves endeavouring to supply as much information as possible to help the collector.

The Robertson Antiques Fair will be a bonanza for the village with a great number of tourists visiting the fair and also visiting many local attractions such as our three local waterfalls, the Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk, the Robertson Heritage Railway Station Gallery , the Village Woodworks that also incorporates the

Robertson Guild art and craft display.

After your visit to the Antiques Fair there is still plenty to do in the village such as browsing through the many shops selling antiques, arts and crafts, paintings, books, foodstuffs and local produce. Also, why not visit one of the many cafes for morning/afternoon tea or lunch.

Events like the fair are important to the School of Arts Committee who rely on income from these functions to maintain the hall. During the fair the ladies from the hall committee will be serving light lunches and morning/afternoon teas.

The Robertson Antiques Fair will be open to the public from 9am until 5pm on Saturday 22nd November and from 10am until 4pm on Sunday 23rd November. Admission is $6 for adults and includes a lucky door prize ticket. Accompanied children are free. There is plenty of parking nearby and wheelchair access into the hall.

The Robertson School of Arts is situated on the Illawarra Highway at Robertson, right in the centre of the village.

Wollondilly

Wollondilly, is situated on the south western outskirts of Sydney and at the foothills of the Southern Highlands. It is surrounded by spectacular, natural beauty and rural pastures in an area that relies on dairying and mixed farming. It takes in Bargo in the south, Appin and Menangle in the east, Warragamba in the north, Yerranderie Ghost Town and the Burragorang Valley to the west.

Historic Picton was originally called Stonequarry and was in fact a private town in the early 19C. It has a number of notable historic sites; Vault Hill, owned by an early settler Henry Antill, the old courthouse, built in 1864, a Victorian classical stone post office with an impressive clock tower, dating from 1892, the CBC Bank (now the National Australia Bank) built in 1885, St Mark’s Anglican Church, and Larkin Cottage, one of the oldest surviving buildings in town.

Take in the breathtaking views of the Burragorang Valley, the waters of which are

dammed by Warragamba Dam or picnic and BBQ at the Avon, Cordeaux or Nepean Dams.

Among the attractions in Wollondilly are Wirrimbirra, a local wildlife sanctuary and Trainworks, home of Australia’s oldest and largest railway museum.

Wirrimbirra Sanctuary, which is set in 200 acres of bushland, is a National Trust (NSW) property and is located between Bargo and Tahmoor. There are native animals, a native plant nursery, picnic tables and a Gift Shop.

Trainworks in Thirlmere is a magical place to visit for the enthusiast and the young at heart. Step back in time to an era when everyone travelled by train. There are over 40 locomotives and 80 carriages on display, dating from 1865. As well, there is an exhibition of railway items and memorabilia, a signals display, an authentic fettler’s shed, and a heritage-listed 1880s railway station.

Lake Alexandra Reserve Park & Garden Lake Alexandra in Mittagong Township is a man - made lake, originally a dam, which was constructed to provide a reliable supply of water to operate the works for the Fitzroy Bessemer Steel and Hematite Coal Company in the 19C. A park - like reserve surrounds the lake and an abundance of birdlife live on the water and shores. Undercover BBQ and playground facilities are on site as the area has recently undergone a revamp.

Women’s cricket will be celebrated at the Bradman Centre this November, with plenty to see in the museum, and out on beautiful Bradman Oval.

The Australian women’s cricket team - the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars – will be in action against the West Indies in two One Day International matches at Bradman Oval on 16 and 18 November. The World Champions will be out to prove why they are the number one ranked team in the world and will be expecting a tough contest against the athletic and powerful West Indies side.

Why not grab a picnic basket from the Bradman Centre’s Stumps Café and relax under one of the shady trees around the oval, feasting on freshly cooked gourmet treats while watching world-class cricket.

To coincide with the matches, from November 14 there will be an extensive women’s cricket exhibition in the Bradman Museum. Covering pioneer players to our T20 champions, the exhibition will honour all the talented women that make cricket such an exciting and engaging sport. The exhibition will run until February.

The Bradman Museum and International Cricket Hall of Fame houses match-used objects from Trumper to Tendulkar, including English player Michael Carberry’s broken bat from the 5th Test in Sydney in January 2014. There is also over 100 hours of exclusive player interviews, in addition to comprehensive live match footage.

The Museum connects with all ages, incorporating interactive displays with fascinating exhibits that hold the interest of even the non-cricket tragics. It has fully accessible facilities, caters for pre-booked guided groups and school excursions, and is a great day out for the whole family, with a café, and a park and playground right next door.

The Arts Festival is an annual month long event held each November which celebrates the work of our local community of artists and makers alongside internationally acclaimed talent.

The Southern Highlands Art Studio Trail, a once a year opportunity to see beyond the studio door of some of our local artists, is on again over the first two weekends of November. The Art Studio Trail is the feature event of the Southern Highlands Arts Festival, a time to celebrate and enjoy all of the creative opportunities in the region – galleries, exhibitions, music, theatre, arts shopping and workshops.

The 2014 Art Studio Trail is one of the most comprehensive to date, with 26 studios opening their doors featuring the work of

more than 50 artists and makers and including ten new studios. Visitors will be able to meet the artists, see their work in the place it was created and purchase directly from the studio door. The artists participating in the trail include professional as well as emerging artists practising in many forms of art-making including painting, sculpture, aboriginal art, ceramics, jewellery, fibre art, botanical art, woodwork, fine furniture, textiles, photography, mosaics, painted tiles, printmaking and art conservation.

The orchard will be open for EITHER nectarine or peach picking on Saturdays & Sundays in November from 8 November, 9.30am to 2.00pm each day. You will be transported into the different picking areas by a tractor with a people-mover trailer!

Moss Vale & BerrimaMoss Vale, the Shire CapitalMoss Vale is central to Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attractions and only a short drive away.

The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an effort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes.

Some buildings date to the 1860s - 1890s, the Old Post Office. The Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of the 19C architecture.

The Moss Vale area was once occupied by the Gundangara people, though they had disappeared by the 1870s, partly due to the loss of their hunting land to European settlers.

Moss Vale holds a large part of the Southern Highlands Industry - as well as being a minor centre for agriculture, many light and medium industries are found in and around Moss Vale.

Leighton Gardens, in the centre of town, is a ‘must visit’ with displays of flowers and shrubs in Spring and Autumn.

Berrima Today, Berrima is a historic village offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environment. It is a favourite destination for Sydneysiders and Illawarra and Canberra residents and has exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food.

Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. It is located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River. In the 19thC, the township was destined to become the main town of the Southern Highlands, but when the railway line was built through Moss Vale in the 1860s, it faded to a sleepy village.

The first Europeans to investigate the area were sent by the colonial governor, Governor Hunter. With a water supply provided by the nearby Wingecarribee River, a town plan, in the manner of an English village, was laid out by Robert Hoddle.

by the 1850s sturdy Anglican and Catholic churches replaced the original wattle and daub versions. Licensed since 1834, the Surveyor-General Inn, in the centre of town, is the longest licensed hotel in NSW.

By the 1960s, the preservation of old Georgian buildings became of national importance to our heritage, so the entire village of Berrima was declared a historic village by the National Trust.

The most interesting period in the history of Berrima is perhaps when it became an internment camp for enemy aliens and POWs during WW1. The Courthouse Museum and Berrima Gaol are still two impressive sandstone buildings which every visitor must see. Until a few years ago the gaol was still used as a prison.

Berrima is said to be a word from the language of the Dharawal people meaning ‘Black Swan’. The Dharawal were displaced in the area by farming and grazing interests and were rarely seen by the 1870s.


The Illawarra Porcelain Artist Society- NSW will hold its annual Exhibition and Sale on 15 & 16 November at The Old CourtHouse, Belmore Basin, Wollongong. Saturday 9am-5pm and Sunday 9am-4pm. Entry is free.

The Illawarra Society is working towards a magnificent display of works for this 25th annual Exhibition.

The aim of the society is to promote excellence in porcelain art through the developement of skills and processes with the spirit of common purpose and friendship. This is achieved through bi-monthly meetings, workshops and art weekends, giving our members the knowledge to develop their skills and enhance their painting. We are fortunate in the Illawarra to have teachers who are recognised at State, Australia and world wide levels.

The exhibition will see a cross section of members artwork, in both traditional and contemporary styles. This will be a display of radiant, colourful individual designs to whet the appetite of the observer and will be an ideal time to collect that one-off Christmas gift for loved ones.

Hand painted porcelain today reflects

traditional and contemporary creations, often of themes inspired by nature, cultures and the artists own interpretation.

As well as a wide range of subjects within the exhibition of artists work, a special section “Orientalism” has inspired many artists to create works from Islamic designs, ancient Chinese blue & white ware and much more. This section has given the artists a range of countries and styles to gather inspiration from such as Japan, Russia, Morocco, Turkey, China, India and Malaysia.

Bundanoon Bundanoon is said to be a "place of deep gullies". Early industries in the district included timber milling, sandstone quarrying and farming. Today Bundanoon retains many of its early 20C buildings and has a 'yesteryear' charm about it.

Bundanoon has its share of interesting craft shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, nurseries and picnic areas.

You can hire a bike, walk through nearby Morton National Park, enjoy picnic spots, native

flowers and birds and see kangaroos and wallabies at dusk on the edge of town.

Take a walk to "Glow Worm Glen" and discover how the Glow Worms live and glow. Bundanoon is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks; most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys.

Probably the most visited lookout is the one overlooking the Grand Canyon 3km from the town centre.

RobertsonRobertson is the lushest of the Southern Highlands landscapes and is renowned for its rich volcanic soil in which potatoes are grown for the NSW market.

Potatoes were the first crops planted in Robertson when a large parcel of land was cleared in the mid 19C. It could be said that this was due to the prevalence of landholders with an Irish background.

Robertson’s development followed the usual pattern of rural towns with churches, cricket and football teams, schools, school of arts and agricultural societies.

Macquarie Pass, linking the Highlands to the coast was such a brilliant spectacle that Robertson soon became the eastern gateway to the Highlands. Local businessmen, eager to capitalise on the town’s potential, brought the attractions of the area to general attention; the waterfalls, gorges and lush countryside.

The village is worth visiting both for itself, and as an ideal base to explore a spectacular

hinterland; it is recognized as the “green heart” of the Southern Highlands on account of its superb rural scenery. The building known as ‘The Cheese Factory’ is a ‘must see’ in Robertson as it now houses a collection of shops offering cheese, gifts, craft, collectables and a cafe.

The Illawarra Fly turns exploring the cliff tops into a great adventure with treetop walkways, a soaring tower, and sweeping coastal vistas from Port Kembla to Kiama.

Robertson is a great place to use as a base when exploring the Highlands, close to national parks and half way between the coast and plains. The town is within easy reach of the surrounding towns of Berrima, Bowral, Bundanoon, Fitzroy Falls, Mittagong, Moss Vale and Sutton Forest, all great places to wander, stop for something to eat and browse through the unique little shops and galleries.

Fitzroy Falls, in Morton National Park, offers scenery on a grand scale. Waterfalls, wildflowers, native animals, sandstone cliffs, lush rainforest gullies and sweeping views of the escarpment are all good reasons for visitors to include this area in a tour of the Southern Highlands.

There are several walks to choose from: a timber boardwalk to the falls or a 7km walk into a rainforest gully.

Goulburn

With three open gardens on display, the first weekend in November is the prime time to visit for garden admirers and green thumbs alike. Two private gardens opening especially for the weekend include ‘Oatlands’ on Boxers Creek Road, and ‘Kentgrove’ on Gorman Road. Set on the grounds of a homestead built in the 1850s, ‘Kentgrove’ garden is focused around sustainability. Featuring techniques such as energy and water reduction, reuse and recycling as well as organic food growing to make this heritage designed garden a 21st century model.

Riversdale, a historic family home, is a regularly open attraction. Brimming with an old-world charm the Georgian cottage surrounded by splendid flowering gardens is the perfect spot to enjoy the spring sun.

Standing sentinel over the City is the Goulburn War Memorial and Museum on Rocky Hill. Built by public subscription in 1924, the War

Memorial is a lasting tribute to the gallant men of the Goulburn District who served in WWI. The War Memorial is a square tower of stone conglomerate and concrete. It stands at a height of 20 metres above the top of Rocky Hill. Inside the tower is a tablet inscribed with the names of those who enlisted from this district and a lookout gallery that provides spectacular views over the city of Goulburn and its surrounding environment.

Whilst at the Memorial, visit the Museum in the adjacent cottage, which houses a valuable collection of artefacts allocated to the city of Goulburn after World War I including; personal items used by soldiers, memorabilia and medals. The local history room displays Goulburn’s association with, and contribution to the two World Wars. Each object tells a unique story, of survival, mateship and the history of warfare. After recent renovations earlier this year, Goulburn’s war memorial is a must-visit.

Steel Gardens: Wollongong Women’s Stories is a community cultural collaboration and is on display until 16 November. Diverse groups of Wollongong women come together to share their stories and creatively explore what it means to live in an industrial region undergoing radical change.

Murrimul ll includes painting, weaving, ceramics, photography and shellwork by local and nationally significant Aboriginal artists. This collection exhibition explores the relationship to land, personal histories and provides an insight into a traditional way of life. On show until 1 February 2015

THE SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS CHRISTMAS FAIR 13 & 14 December. Southern Highland Wines, Oldbury Road, Sutton Forest. Up to 200 high quality craft and produce stalls, with stallholders and artisans coming from as far away as the Hunter Valley, Sydney, Canberra, and the far South Coast. This Fair will provide an ideal opportunity for visitors to purchase unique and handcrafted Christmas presents and gifts from the 1000s of products on offer at this exciting annual Christmas Fair. Drive through our stunning Highlands landscape The Southern Highlands is scattered with delightful villages like Robertson, Bundanoon and Burrawang; they are perfect destinations for a lazy afternoon outing.

Whether you are visiting or reside in the Southern Highlands, one of our lovely villages will only be a short drive away, offering an opportunity to enjoy coffee by a fireside or a glass of one our superb regional wines.

You might consider the following route for something different:• Begin at Fitzroy Falls, in the Morton National Park. The NPWS Visitor Centre, has toilets and a café. Take a walk on one of the walking tracks to a stunning waterfall or lookout, enjoy a picnic and admire the flora and fauna displays in the Visitor Centre!

• Leave Fitzroy Falls, turn left into Nowra Rd, turn left again into Myra Vale Rd and travel across country to Wildes Meadow and then to Burrawang via Wildes Meadow Rd & Church St. Burrawang has a lovely country pub where you can enjoy wonderful country hospitality .

• From here, head back along Wildes Meadow Rd and Myra Vale Rd. (13.5 kilometre drive)

to Belmore Falls. The Falls are located in the Morton National Park, and there are walking tracks and picnic facilities.

• After Belmore Falls travel towards Robertson via Pearsons Lane and the Illawarra Hwy. Visit Robertson Nature Reserve which is a 5 hectares of unique rainforest and a 750m walk. In the town of Robertson, you can visit specialty shops, cafes, the Old Cheese Factory which houses a gift shop, homewares and a country cafe. Stay a while and enjoy a devonshire tea.

• When you leave Robertson, you can then travel down Jamberoo Pass where you can enter the Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk or travel further to Minnamurra Rainforest. Here you will find an abundance of wildlife, birdlife and Minamurra Falls. Take a walk to the Falls or head back into the Highlands.
