People who see a lot of violence view violence as a way of settling conflicts. People think violence is okay. Watching violence can lead to real life violence. Children exposed to violent shows at a young age may show more aggressive behavior later in life than children who are not exposed. Studies show the negative impact may be worse than violence seen on television, movies, or music.

Bullying All students attend school to receive an education.Unfortunately, some are bullied in the process. There are many ways to stop bullying. A student that is bullied, can become depressed or suicidal. Tips all students can do to prevent bullying at Palmetto Middle School.

Prevention:• Victims and witnesses should tell the bully to stop.• Tell a teacher or a trusted adult.• The victim should ignore the bully.

According to the National Center Against Bullying there are four types of bullying. Physical, Verbal, Relationship, and Cyber.

Four Types or Bullying

Physical: Occurs when the bully hits, punches or physically contacts the victim. Verbal: The bully uses words to offend the victim.Relationship: Occurs when the bully spreads rumors, damages someone's reputation, or purposely ignores the person. Cyber: When the bully insults or spreads rumors on instant messaging or social media.

According to the National Center Against Bullying, people who are bullied are 38% more likely to bring a weapon to school.• Over 160,000 teens are bullied each day.• 37% of cyberbullying goes unreported.• 90% of children in grades 4 through 8 have been bullied.• Bullying can also lead to suicide or homicide.• Bullying victims are 9% more likely to commit suicide • 80% of suicides are caused by bullying.• 71% of teens are bullied in school everyday.• About 3.2 million teens are been bullied yearly.

Cars & Businesses Collide Cars crashing into homes and business are caused by many factors. Those include age of driver, texting, mechanical problems, health of driver and sleepiness.Recently an accident occurred at a Chick-fil-A in Anderson SC.The police reported injuries were minor. The truck entered the Chick-fil-A on East Greenville Street and hit the building crashing through the wall and into Chick-fil-A. A father-son-football-night was being held at the time of the accident. EMS also responded to the scene and said there was no accidents.The driver of the truck accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake and hit the building. Information from WYFF news 4 Chick-Fil-A accidents. Days after the Chick-fil-A accident, a pickup truck collided with a SUV knocking it off the road and into the Arthur Bank in Greenville SC. The SUV caught fire killing the two young boys in the back seat. The children were five and three years old and were passengers in their mother's car. Both children were pronounced dead at the scene. Justin Wilson

Justin Wilson, an IndyCar driver, was 37 years old when he died on August 23, 2015. Wilson died following a car crash that occurred ahead of him at the Pocono Raceway. On lap 179, Wilson was hit by debris from rookie Sage Karam's car. The cone of the car knocked Wilson out which sent him into the wall. Emergency officials rushed Wilson to Lehigh Valley Health Network Cedar Crest Hospital. Wilson went into a coma and passed away the following day. Wilson's family decided to donate his organs. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. They loved him very much and will miss him. Wilson is the second IndyCar driver that has pass away since 2011.

Krabbe Disease Krabbe disease is a rare fatal degenerative disease that affects the system. A degenerative disease is were the symptoms get worse everyday. Illinois, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania have passed laws to test for Krabbe and other diseases at birth. This disease occurs about 1 in 100,000 births. Krabbe can been found in cats, dogs, and dolphins. Infants with this disease are normal at first, but around 3 months they begin to have developmental delays.

Symptoms: • fever• limb stiffness• seizures• feeding problems• vomiting• muscles • weakness• spasticity • deafness• optic nerves enlargement• optic atrophy• blindness• paralysis• problems swallowing

Addison GraceThis beautiful little baby is Mrs. Bolt's daughter. At six months of age she was diagnosed with Krabbe Disease. Her parents noticed that she was not developing like other babies. At her



four month old check up, her doctor ordered a cat scan, a MRI, and blood work. When her results came back they found out she had Krabbe disease.

Due to this illness and the cost of Addie Grace's medical care, people have been raising money to help the family. Can you help? YES! Barrel Racing Barrel racing is a rodeo event. Some arenas are inside, but most events are held outside. In barrel racing the horse and rider complete a clover leaf pattern. The fastest time wins. Even though males compete in the sport, according to ESPN, the event was made for females.

On July 4th 1888, the first rodeo was held in Texas. The first rodeo association was Girls Rodeo Association (GRA). The first pattern used in the early 1930's was a figure 8. Later the pattern changed to a clover leaf pattern because it was more difficult.At the beginning of a Rodeo, the American flag is brought out, and the Star Spangled Banner is sung. Events begin. Barrel racing is normal first. At the beginning of each barrel race the horse and rider enter the arena at top speed. The first barrel is called the money barrel, probably the most difficult barrel in my opinion.

There is more to being in a rodeo than knowing how to ride and jump. The rider has to have a very special bond with the horse. When running barrels, the rider needs to stay as close to the barrel as possible without knocking them over. For every barrel the rider knocks over 5 seconds is added to the time. Sixteen seconds is considered fast, but Chayni Chamberlin, a nine year old girl, finished the barrel pattern in 13.9 seconds in 2015.

Liam Hokestra is a five year old boy who lives in Michigan. Liam has Miyostatin Deficiency, a rare disorder. Liam has rapid muscle growth and is basically a super human. His strength is unmatched compared to people twice his age. Luckily this disorder only effects skeletal muscle. Liam has ZERO BODY FAT! Because of this,



Liam has to eat three times the protein of an average teen. As Liam has grown he reached milestones quickly. Liam walked at six months. He could do a pull up at age two. By the age of three, Liam already had a six pack. Today at age five, Liam's thighs bulge due to his defined muscles. Liam has this disorder because he was born five months earlier than expected. Sadly his own parents gave him up for adoption. This disorder is a genetic disorder. His parents had a 1 in 100,000 chance of their child having this disorder. This super human specimen still remains a mystery.

Car Accidents & TeensAccording to Edgar Snyder and Associates, in their report, "Teen Car Driver. Car Accidents Statistics", 58% of teenagers today are involved in car accidents. Unfortunately, this causes many injuries and deaths. When teenagers are involved in car accidents it is normally due to: • Use of drugs and alcohol• Drowsy driving• Poor driving skills• Nighttime driving• Driving with teenage passengers• Not wearing a seat belt• Distracting music• Cell phone use About 60% of teenagers are drinking too much and then driving drunk. Drunk driving can lead to going over the speed limit. According to the National Survey on Drugs Use and Health 2013, about 9.9 million teens were taking drugs and driving. As reported by EdgerSnyder "Teen Car Accident Statistics", 12% of teenagers have used their cell phones while driving. Phones distract them from keeping their eyes on the road.

Henry Ford decided to create a car using his last name, the Ford Model-T. Another creation was the famous quad-cycle. Woodmont Lockdown On September 2, 2015, a female student from Woodmont High School was injured off-campus. The following day Woodmont High School was put on modified lockdown. Current and former students were involved in Wednesday's fight. During the fight, shots were fired and the victim was grazed by a bullet. To make sure the school was safe, officials locked down the school and had extra sheriffs deputies at the school. Students stayed inside the building and all

doors were locked. If someone visited the school they had to go through the school office. The police know five people that were involved in the shooting. Four adults were believed to also be involved.

Hurricanes Hurricane Katrina, a level five hurricane, was the most destructive hurricane in history. Eighty percent of the city was flooded due to levee breaks. Levees were built to protect New Orleans from water flooding the city. Levees are ridges of cement that prevent water from flooding certain areas.The levees in New Orleans collapsed during Katrina due to the surge of water from storms. This resulted in the deaths of 986 New Orleans residents.The major cause of death was drowning (40%), injury and trauma (25%), heart conditions (11%).

During heavy rain and high tide, half of Charleston, SC may be up to a foot under water. Charleston is affected or hit by hurricanes every 3.11 years. The next hurricane should hit Charleston in 2017. The last time a hurricane hit Charleston was June 7, 2013, the storm was Hurricane Andrea. The first hurricane to hit Charleston was Spanish Repulse it was in 1686. The storm drove ships onto land destroyed crops. The largest hurricane was Rising Sun. This hurricane produced several storms and floods and damaged ships. Hurricanes

A hurricane is a huge storm, usually 600 miles wide with winds up to 75-200 mph. Hurricanes can stay active for a week and move 10-20 miles per hour in the open ocean. Hurricanes form over warm ocean water, 80 degrees or warmer. They form between 5 to 15 degrees latitude north and south of the equator. The Coriolis Force is needed to create the spin in the Hurricane. Hurricanes become weaker as they approach the equator.

Hurricane season in the Atlantic begins around June 1 and ends November 30. In the Eastern Pacific hurricane season begins around May 15 and ends November 30.

According to nhc.noaa.gov, hurricanes have already been named until 2020. During 1950 to 1952, tropical cyclones of the North Atlantic Ocean were identified by the phonetic alphabet. In 1953, the U.S Weather Bureau switched to women's names. Since 1979 the list has alternated the names of women and men.

UFC Fights People love watching fighting on TV. Some popular fights includes World Wrestling Entertainment, UFC, and Boxing. Most middle school students have probably heard of Rhonda Rousey. Rousey, 28 years old, is probably the most popular UFC female fighter. She is an UFC fighter who can win by a knock out in less than 14 seconds. She is the highest paid UFC and MMA fighter. Rousey has appeared in movies including the Expendables 3, Furious 7, and Mile 22. Male fighters challenge her to fight, but she neverbeen accepts the challenges. She holds the title of Woman's Bantomweight Champion. UFC champions make up to 6 million.

Two famous WWE wrestlers, from Mexico, Rey Mysterio and Perro Aguayo were in a championship title match. Rey Mysterio's drop kick made Aguayos' neck hit the rope breaking his neck in three different places, almost killing his opponent. However, no one knew he was injured, not even Mysterio. Mysterio then used his famous move "6 1 9" on the ropes. Aguayo did not move.

Referees knew something was wrong. Mysterio and doctors ran to check out Aguayo. Mysterio fold his hands to pray for Aguayo as the doctors put Aguayo into an ambulance. Fans were shocked as they looked on. Doctors pronounced



Aguayo dead in a local hospital. Later at Aguayo funeral, Mysterio stood beside Aguayo's casket the entire service. Aguayo's family talked to Mysterio and forgave him for the accident in the rink. The family did not press charges.

Mickey Mouse

Let's go back to November 19,1928. A child is sitting in front of a TV when suddenly a character appears. "Who is this character?" Well, it's none other than the wonderful Mickey Mouse.

Mickey Mouse really began as the Lucky Rabbit, Oswald. Oswald had a big round white face, a big button nose, flappy black ears, and a smiling face. He was an instant hit and Disney made a series of "shorts" (short cartoons) including: Poor Papa,Trolley Troubles, Oh Teacher, The Mechanical Cow, Great Guns, All Wet The Ocean Hop, and The Bankers Daughter.

When Disney met with Universal to discuss Oswald and how well he was doing, Walt was told to think of something new. Universal had sold Oswald's contract to another company along with Oswald's design team.

Disney then designed a character thatpopped into his head. He named the character Mortimer Mouse. Disney's wife did not like the name so he changed the name to Mickey.

Currently, the future for Mickey Mouse is not bright! According to Empire En News,The Walt Disney Company is planing to cut Mickey Mouse from his contract. The Walt Disney company is planing to make a movie about Mickey where Mickey Mouse will die.

Over the past 86 years Mickey Mouse has made countless memories and inspired millions of people around the world. Each year 52 million people visit Disneyland and DisneyWorld. According to Temporarily Tourist.com, 53,000 people visit DisneyWorld and Disneyland per day.

Sinkholes Florida, "sinkhole alley", is known for sinkholes. Another word for sinkhole is Cenote. Somewhere around 3,400 sinkholes form each year in Florida. In February 2013, a sinkhole formed under Jeff Bush's bed while he was sleeping. Bush's brother was in the house at the time of the incident. When he noticed his brother was screaming for help, he tried to rescue him. However, Bush did not survive the incident and his furniture was never recovered. On August 20, 2015 that same sinkhole which had been filled in, opened up to 20 feet in diameter. Sinkholes have no external drainage and can be up to a few feet to 1-100 acres wide. Sinkholes form mostly in the states of Texas, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Missouri.Sinkholes form when water collects under ground. The water cause the ground to soften up and break away. There are two types of ways sinkholes collapse. 1. Cover - Collapse - the ground under the surface creates a hole. The surface collapses where there was already a hole. 2. Dissolution Sinkhole - the ground caves in creating a crater in the ground. Sinkholes can be so large in diameter that they can swallow entire houses. Caverns can form underground as the rock dissolves. Sinkholes form slowly or in seconds! The ground that sinkholes form on is mostly made up of limestone and other kinds of rock.

Crybaby Bridge Crybaby Bridge was built in 1919. The bridge was built to connect two counties. The legend states a woman tossed her baby off the bridge. killing the baby instantly. Today people believe if you go to Crybaby Bridge, drive to the middle of the bridge, get out of your car, and say the words cry baby cry, a woman will appear. Some say they can hear a baby crying in the water below. Only the bravest people should test this theory.

Derek Jeter Derek Jeter was born on June 26, 1974 in Pequannock, New Jersey. His mother was an accountant and his dad was a substance abuse counselor. He was the oldest of two children. Jeter played shortstop for Kalamazoo High School because he wanted to play baseball for the New York Yankees. In 1992 at 18 years of age, he was drafted right out of high school. Jeter reminds me of myself when I was younger . As a child everyone told Jeter he would never play Major League Baseball. As a student his teacher told him to write about what he wanted to be when he grew up. Jeter wrote that he wanted to play for the New York Yankees. When his teacher returned the paper everyone received a 100 except him because the teacher said it wasn't a reasonable idea. Interestingly, Derek Jeter became the starting Shortstop for the New York Yankees,

That story reminds me of myself when I was younger. Everyone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I would tell them I wanted to play in the Major Leagues. Like Derek Jeter, they are telling me I will never play in the Major Leagues. I want to prove everyone wrong.

VIRTUAL TECH CAN HELP SOLVE PTSD New researchers at livescience.com suggest that virtual reality video games (Tetris, Full Spectrum Warrior, and many others) can help veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). A new virtual reality program has helped PTSD in 16 out of 20 soldiers. Some soldiers played video games during down time in the military and others continued gaming after their tour was over.

At livescience.com they used exposure therapy. Researchers tried to figure out soldiers problems by trying to replay their experiences using video games.The way to reenact the experience is by putting the soldier in a combat environment on a video game. This works best within four hours of the traumatic experience. If this works correctly, the symptoms of PTSD will slowly disappear. Sometimes if they do not receive treatment or go through treatment and it fails, they may commit suicide.

The very first video game used for exposure therapy was a game called "Total Spectrum Warrior ." As of July 16, 2015, a new study shows that playing Tetris can help PTSD. Playing Tetris by itself does not work as well to reduce PTSD.
