COURSE OBJECTIVES Use quantitative reasoning to understand, analyze and solve accounting problems. Identify and apply the concepts, conventions and generally accepted accounting principles

underlying financial accounting and reporting. Use basic bookkeeping procedures that apply to a sole proprietorship. Understand and perform the steps in recording payroll for a business. Understand and prepare financial statements for a business. Interact effectively with individuals and groups in an online environment.

CLASS FORMATThis online course sits on the Canvas platform and employs MyAccountingLab (MAL), an online text site. Students must log into the course at least five times a week to follow the assignments and activities.

Online learning requires commitment and self-discipline. Students must focus on the learning objectives.

Student learn efficiently by applying the SQ3R method to retain concepts from the textbook: Survey the learning objectives, the glossary, the exhibits, and the summaries before reading the assignment. Question your understanding. Read a section at a time. Recite by writing your own short summary notes in the book margins. Review your learning by completing the assigned homework exercises.

Use the Discussion assignments to elaborate on what you have learned. Participation and interaction is essential to your online learning experience.

Please use the Homework Discussion Room. You can post any questions there. Learn by answering your classmate’s questions. All questions are welcomed. Others probably share your concerns. Please - do not discuss quiz or exam questions in the discussion room.

TIME COMMITMENTYou will need about the same amount of time each week for this online class as you would need to be successful in an on campus class. It’s crucial that you devote a certain amount of time each week to complete your assignments and stay on schedule. You must participate at least 5 times a week. All assignments, unless otherwise noted, must be submitted by midnight on Sundays – the timeline expires one-hour after midnight. Late homework, while accepted up to one week past the initial deadline, will receive no more than 50% of the score for that homework. Late quizzes and exams are not accepted. If you have extenuating circumstances that may prevent you from completing your assignments on time, please email the instructor to discuss your options. Do not wait to start your assignments. There’s no excuse if you wait until the due date to begin your work. It’s very important to work on your assignments throughout the week.

Homework Assignments: Learning accounting takes practice. Students practice by completing homework assignments and participating in online discussions. All homework assignments are completed in MAL. The assignments match the textbook exercises. These all relate to the Learning Objectives in each chapter. Your work is automatically graded as you complete each problem. You have three attempts to increase your score on each problem.

MAL is a remarkably effective on-line tool. Make use of the "Help Me Solve This” button. Former students have found this extremely helpful. Sometimes, MAL reduces your score for minor errors or rounding issues. Please notify the instructor when this happens. The instructor can adjust the grades to address these anomalies. Remember you are trying to master the course material, not the MAL system.

Late homework, while accepted up to one week past the initial deadline, will receive no more than 50% of the score for that homework.

Class Participation: Today’s business world requires effective communication skills. Class participation activities give you the opportunity to practice this skill. Each week’s class participation activity is detailed on the syllabus’s course schedule.

You will have the opportunity to read several short cases based on a real-world company (Subway). You will apply your growing accounting knowledge to express your insight. You will answer one of the short questions posed at the end of the case. In addition, and sometimes during the same week, you will address an ethical question posed in the textbook at the end of selected chapters. You will complete this activity by “posting” your answer in the appropriate Discussion Forum in MAL. Please “interact” with others by “replying” to their postings.

To meet the requirements, a “discussion post” addresses the assigned question in a meaningful way. A "reply" of two to five complete sentences is sufficient. Alternatively, a thoughtful response to a classmate’s post, commenting or expanding on the post, meets this requirement.

Quizzes: Quizzes will assess your understanding of the fundamental concepts covered in the chapters you study. All quizzes are completed in MAL. Some quizzes use problems that are similar to problems in the book. Others consist multiple-choice questions and must be completed in 20 minutes. You will not have time to look up answers in the textbook during the quiz. So, allocate time before hand to study and prepare for the quizzes. To accommodate those who need more time, the 20-minute quizzes are set to run no more than 60 minutes. The system will provide you with adequate time and announce the “time remaining” in your quiz.

In general, multiple-choice questions can be read and answered within one minute each. These are just a series of True-False responses – pick the one that’s most “True”. Take your time to eliminate some choices, review the alternatives, and choose the best choice.

You will receive a score after submitting the quiz. After the due date, you will be able to review the quiz questions for correct/incorrect answers. Normally, you will have to complete the quiz in one sitting. Allow enough time to complete the quiz before you start the quiz.

Exams: At a more in-depth level than the quizzes, Exams will assess your understanding of the fundamental concepts covered in the chapters you study. They include practical problems similar to homework, as well as multiple-choice questions. You will have 120 minutes to complete an exam, and as with quizzes, adequate study and preparation is required in order to complete the exam within the time limit.

You will receive a score after submitting the exam, but will not be able to review the exam questions for correct/incorrect answers until after the due date. Late exams will not be accepted. Extra Credit: On occasion you may be given the opportunity to earn extra credit. Any extra credit opportunities will be announced in CANVAS and by email, and will be available for a limited time, so regular “class attendance,” in the form of logging on to CANVAS regularly, is required to take advantage of these opportunities.

You can determine an approximation of your decimal grade at any time by comparing your percentage grade shown in MAL.

Grading Conflicts in MAL for Homework, Quizzes, and Exams: MAL employs a very powerful and sensitive grading rubric for each question. The grading provides partial credit for most entries. Occasionally, your “correct” entry may not match the “MAL” answer and you may lose some points. When you feel that the MAL score does not reflect your performance, PLEASE EMAIL YOUR INSTRUCTOR TO DESCRIBE THE DETAILS OF YOUR CLAIM. MAL allows

the instructor to review the scoring of every part of each question. The instructor should be able to explore the details of the grading system and make appropriate corrections.
