• Ethernet card (PCI or PCMCIA) *see below• 3.5” floppy diskette containing Ethernet card device drivers• Ethernet card user’s guide (for future reference, if needed)*(To determine if you have an Ethernet card already, please see Step 1: Checking the Minimum Hardware Requirements).

If you are missing any components, or if any components appear damaged, please contact the Primus DSLTechnical Support department at 1-800-370-0015. You may be directed to the original equipmentmanufacturer, depending on the nature of your call.

Step 2: Connecting the Phone Filters to Your Telephones

A distributed filter, or micro-filter is a small electronic component that fits between your phone line and aregular voice device, such as a phone, a fax, or any device with a regular modem such as a cable box, alarmsystem or digital TV.

When DSL (ADSL or G.Lite) is provided over voice lines, all devices in the house except the DSL modemmust be connected through filters. The filter protects the devices from high frequency noise. They are low-pass filters.

How do the filters help my DSL Internet connection? Do I need them?DSL operates across a wide frequency spectrum and, particularly in ADSL and G.lite implementations, canvary speed downwards in response to noise on the line. There are often no user visible statistics on whetherthis is happening, and the only symptom is poor performance. Checking around the house for possiblesources can sometimes reap the rewards of immediate speed gains. Things such as poor house wiring, longhome phone cable runs (rather than locating the DSL modem as close to the entry point of the line aspossible), or in the case of ADSL, line filters of insufficient quality, line filters being installed backwards, olderfax machines, alarm systems, or poor quality phone extension handsets. Even cordless phones andfluorescent lights should be regarded with suspicion, to eliminate all possible sources of interference.

How to Connect the Phone Filters

How to Install the Desktop FiltersIf you have a phone that sits on a surface, find the desktop filter. If you have a wall-mounted phone, followthe instructions under How to Install the Wall-Mounted Filters.

1. Unplug the telephone cable from the wall jack.2. Plug the desktop filter cable into the wall jack.3. Plug the telephone cable you unplugged from the wall jack back into the jack on the filter.4. Repeat this process for every telephone that you would use regularly and shares the same

phone number as your Primus DSL service.

How to Install the Wall-Mounted Filters (only required for wall-mounted telephones)

1. Remove the wall-mounted telephone from the wall. This usually requires that you slide the phone up (about 1 cm) and then remove it off the wall bracket posts.

2. Unplug the phone cable from the wall jack.

3. On the back of the provided wall filter;• Slide open the gate (to the left)• Lower the phone plug

4. Line up the filter’s phone plug with the wall phone jack, while at the same time inserting the top and bottom openings into the wall jack posts.

5. Lower the wall filter (about 1 cm) until it sits snugly on the wall jack bracket.

6. To lock the wall filter securely in place, lock the gate on the back of the wall filter (on the right side) until it is almost even with the filter.

7. Plug the telephone cord that you removed in Step 2 into the jack on the front of the wall filter.

8. Align the two openings on the back of your phone with the screw posts on the front of the wall filter. Lock the phone in place by sliding it downward.

If you do not need to install an Ethernet card, proceed to Step 4: Connecting the Alcatel Modem to thePhone Line and Computer. Otherwise, proceed to Step 3: Installing the Ethernet Card and its Drivers.

Step 3: Installing the Ethernet Card and its Drivers

• You will need your original Windows CD for this section. • If you have Novell software installed, you will need your Novell diskettes for the installation.

If you have a laptop and ordered a PCMCIA card, please follow the instructions on How to Install anEthernet Card on a Laptop Computer.

3a. How to Install an Ethernet Card on a Desktop PC

CAUTION: HAZARDImportant note: The installation of an Ethernet Card requires the removal of the computer case and theinsertion of the Ethernet Card into the computer’s motherboard. As such, there is a risk of electricalhazard/shock. Primus recommends that Step 3 be done by a qualified technician. The following instructionsare provided for you at your own risk. Primus Canada shall not be held liable, directly or indirectly, for anyproperty damages or injuries which may occur by reason of the improper installation of the Ethernet Cardherein. It is best to ground yourself before working inside the PC or handling components. An easy way to dothis is to touch the metal case of the power supply when it is plugged in. Also, leave the PC plugged in while

you are working on it, and turn off the Hard Power Switch at the back of the PC/Power Supply. The Hard PowerSwitch should have indicators labeled as “I” (On) or “O” (Off) on it. Some systems may not have a Hard PowerSwitch. If this seems to be the case, it is best to ground yourself by touching the power supply, and then unplugthe system, to avoid electrical shock. Do not alter the Voltage selector located at the back of the power supply;leave it set at 110 or 115. As long as you don’t rub your feet on the carpet, you should remain grounded forsome time at this point. Static is not your friend, so avoid it. Do not touch chips with your fingers, even oneson circuit boards. Processors and static (cache) memory chips are particularly sensitive to static discharge. Keepcomponents in their original packaging until you are ready to use them.

Your computer may differ from the pictures shown here. For details specific to your computer, please see thedocumentation provided with your computer, or contact the original distributor/manufacturer.

You will need a screwdriver to complete the following steps.1. Shut down your computer and shut off the Hard Power Switch at the back of the PC/Power

Supply, leaving the PC plugged in while you are working on it. (Please refer to the paragraph labeled CAUTION: HAZARD for full instructions before moving on to Step 2.)

2. Ground yourself to reduce the possibility of electrostatic discharges damaging sensitive components inside your computer. Touch the power supply with both of your hands. You can also use an electrostatic grounding strap attached to your wrist, if you have one available. The power supply is the large metal block that connects to the power cord at the back of your computer.

3. Open up your computer case (typically by removing the corner screws at the back and then removing the cover). If you do not know how to proceed with this, please consult your computer manual.

4. Your Setup Kit will come with an Ethernet card as shown right. Caution! When handling the Ethernet card, do not touch the gold contacts(small stripes) on the bottom, or the chips (the small black wafers) on the card. This can lead to unnecessary component damage.

5. Find a spare PCI slot on your computer’s motherboard that matches the pins on your card. If you have ISA and PCI slots, be aware that the PCI slots are the smaller ones. They are most often a lighter color than ISA slots are, and are always shorter than ISA slots, as a point of reference. If you are unsure as to which slots are PCI slots, please refer to your computer’s documentation, or contact the original distributor/manufacturer for more information.

6. You must now prepare to insert the Ethernet card into your system. This requires that an open slot in the back of your computer case be available, so that the mounting bracket on the Ethernet card has a place to sit. If necessary, you may have to slide, unscrew, or snap out an existing slot cover to make room for the Ethernet card’s mounting bracket.

7. Insert your Ethernet card gently into the empty slot, keeping the card straight, with equal force across the

5

Page 6: High Speed Internet Services Installation Manual

card. Apply firm pressure to seat the card into the slot. You may need to rock the card back and forth slightly to get it to go in. Do not force the card in or press it to the point where the motherboard is flexing significantly. If you need to, support the motherboard manually with one hand while you push with the other, being careful not to touch any exposed chips on the motherboard. Be absolutely sure you are inserting the card into the right slot, as excess pressure may damage both the Ethernet card and the slot. Also be sure that the mounting bracket on the Ethernet card is sliding into the exposed slot on the back of the case properly.

8. Fasten the Ethernet card in place, inserting a screw in the hole provided. The screw-hole should line up well with the mounting bracket’s screw notch. You may have toshift the card slightly, to be sure it is being mounted as straight as possible. If you removed a screw in Step 6 to remove a slot cover, feel free to use that screw. If youdid not remove a screw in that step, you will have to provide your own; your computer may have come with additional screws when you received it.

9. Double-check installation: ensure that the card is securely in its slot. The card may move from side to side very slightly when wiggled but should not be loose. Make sure that the card is not interfering with anything else in the case. Make sure that the card is inserted far enough into the expansion slot, but do not apply excess force to the card. Improper seating will hinder the card from being detected, due to poor contact.

10. Check to make sure that you have not left anything inside the computer (screws, screwdriver, slot cover, etc.). Leave the computer case off, until you are sure things are installed correctly. If you feel better with the case on when powering up your system, at least leave the case unscrewed for now, in case you have to go back into the system.

11. Turn on the Hard Power Switch at the back of the PC/Power Supply, if applicable.

12. Power your computer on again with the front power switch.

13.Verify that the Ethernet card is working: you should see a green light on your Ethernet card (on the back of your computer) when your computer is on. If you see the green light, you may put the case back on (and/or fasten the screws) at this point. If you do not see the green light, shut down your computer. Disconnect the power and open up the case again. Check the installation. If the Ethernet card is firmly in place, and the light is not on when the computer is on, call Primus DSL Technical Support at: 1-800-370-0015.

To start setting up your Ethernet software, proceed to Section 3c: How to Install the Ethernet Card Drivers.

3b. How to Install an Ethernet Card on a Laptop Computer

1. Turn off your laptop.

2. Insert the Ethernet card into an empty PCMCIA (PC Card) slot, with the label face up, as shown. Gently slide the card allthe way in, until it comes to a complete stop. If the card does not lock into place inside the computer, you may be insertingit with the wrong side facing upwards.

What is the Internet? The Internet is a large global network of hundreds of thousands of private and government computers, which are permanently connected to each other. By “logging on” to the Internet, you are connecting yourcomputer to this network and are then able to send or receive information. When you “log off”, yourcomputer is disconnected from the Internet.

What is the World Wide Web?The World Wide Web (WWW or Web) is the most popular part of the Internet. The World Wide Web is acollection of millions of hypertext (HTML) documents stored on thousands of Web servers throughout theworld. These documents (Web pages) can include text, graphics, animation, sound and video which conveyinformation “interactively”.

You can move from one web page to another by clicking on a hyperlink. When the mouse cursor passesover text or a graphic that is a hyperlink, the cursor turns into the pointing hand icon. Clicking on ahyperlink will take you to another web page.

How is the Web Organized?Because the Web is a worldwide phenomenon, no one body or government controls it. There is no central“repository” that organizes Web pages; instead, search engines and Web directories are available to findinformation.

What is a Web Browser?A Web browser is a program used to access and display content located on the World Wide Web. A Webbrowser uses the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) to make requests of Web servers throughout the Webon behalf of the user.

Which Web Browser Should I Use?Primus Canada provides customers with a version of Internet Explorer that has been pre-configured to makeit easier to connect to the Internet. As a result, we recommend that first-time users make use of thiscustomized version. However, Primus servers are compatible with all web browsers including NetscapeCommunicator.

We encourage customers to set their Home Page to http://www.primustel.ca. This will enable you to receive up-to-date information regarding new services, improvements and contests offered by Primus.

Search Button

The Search button allows you to find information on the Internet. It provides access to Search Engines and Web Directories that look for documents containing the exact words entered into the text query box.

To search, type words or phrases into the text query box and click the button next to it to submit yourquery. The results are shown on a new page with links to the Web pages that most closely match your query.

Troubleshooting

1. How do I send a fax with the DSL modem?A DSL modem is not able to connect to fax machines and can’t send or receive faxes. However, you can send and receive faxes over the Internet by using an Internet fax service. Alternatively, you can keep your old fax modem and use it only for faxing.

2. What do the different lights on the DSL modem mean?

3. When I start Internet Explorer, I always see a dialog box that asks me if I want to "Work Offline" or "Try Again". I’m already connected to Primus when I see this and "Try Again" always gets me where I was going. Why is this?

Fix #1Run the IE5 repair tool and reboot. If you are unsure as to how to do this, please call our Technical Support department for further information.

Fix #21. If you still get the error message, reboot in DOS mode, and change directory to C:\Windows\System .2. Rename the three files associated with the System Event Notification Service. These files are named

Sens.dll, Sensapi.dll and Senscfg.dll and must be renamed as .old files (ex: Sens.old).3. Type exit to reboot.

If you still get the error message after trying these two steps, please contact out Technical Support team at 1-800-370-0015.

4. I would like to turn off the advertisements at the bottom of Outlook Express. How do I do this?

Open Outlook Express, and from the top menu, click on View, and then Layout. Clear the checkmark inthe selection marked Info Pane. Click OK, and the banner should be gone.

5. I have an email account with a previous Internet provider and still like to receive certain mail there. How do I configure the account in Outlook Express to work through my Primus DSL connection?

Open Outlook Express, click Tools, and then Accounts. Click the Mail tab across the top, and then selectthe account you would like to use with your Primus Canada DSL connection. Click Properties on the right and then click the Servers tab across the top. In the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) box, delete what’s there and type in smtp.primus.ca. Click OK and then click Close. From now on, you should be able to Send and Receive mail with this account.

Glossary

Backbone: On the Internet or other wide area networks, a backbone is a set of paths that local or regionalnetworks connect to for long-distance interconnection. The connection points are known as network nodesor telecommunication data switching exchanges.

Bandwidth: Generally speaking, bandwidth is directly proportional to the amount of data transmitted orreceived per unit time. In a qualitative sense, bandwidth is proportional to the complexity of the data for agiven level of system performance. For example, it takes more bandwidth to download a photograph in onesecond than it takes to download a page of text in one second. Large sound files, computer programs, andanimated videos require still more bandwidth for acceptable system performance. Virtual reality (VR) andfull-length three-dimensional audio/visual presentations require the most bandwidth of all.

Bit (binary digit): A bit is the smallest unit of data in a computer. A bit has a single binary value, either 0 or 1.

CO (Central Office): A Central Office is the local telephone company facility to which subscriber home andbusiness lines are connected on what is called a local loop. The central office has switching equipment thatcan switch calls locally or to long-distance carrier phone offices.

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line): DSL is a technology for bringing high-bandwidth information to homesand small businesses over ordinary copper telephone lines. xDSL refers to different variations of DSL, suchas ADSL, HDSL and RADSL. Assuming your home or small business is close enough to a telephonecompany’s Central Office that offers DSL service, you may be able to receive data at rates up to 6.1megabits (millions of bits) per second (of a theoretical 8.448 megabits per second), enabling continuoustransmission of motion video, audio and even 3-D effects. More typically, individual connections will providefrom 1.544 Mbps to 512 Kbps downstream and about 128 Kbps upstream. A DSL line can carry both dataand voice signals and the data part of the line is continuously connected.

DSLAM: A Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer is a network device, usually at a telephonecompany’s central office, that receives signals from multiple customer DSL connections and puts the signalson a high-speed backbone line using multiplexing techniques.

Ethernet: Ethernet is the most widely installed local area network technology. An Ethernet LAN typicallyuses coaxial cable or special grades of twisted pair wires. The most commonly installed Ethernet systems arecalled 10BASE-T and provide transmission speeds up to 10 Mbps.

Internet: The Internet, sometimes called simply “the Net,” is a worldwide system of computer networks - anetwork of networks in which users at any one computer can, if they have permission, get information fromany other computer (and sometimes talk directly to users at other computers).

Kbps: Kbps stands for thousands of bits per second or kilobits per second and is a measure of bandwidth(the amount of data that can flow in a given time) on a data transmission medium.

Local Loop: In telephony terminology, a local loop is the wired connection from a telephone company’scentral office in a locality to its customers’ telephones at homes and businesses. This connection is usuallymade on a pair of copper wires called twisted pair.

Mbps: Mbps stands for millions of bits per second or megabits per second and is a measure of bandwidth(the amount of data that can flow in a given time) on a data transmission medium.

PPPoE: Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet is a proposal specifying how a host personal computer (PC)interacts with a broadband modem (a DSL modem, for example) to achieve access to the growing numberof High Speed data networks.
