Welcome

Michael took up his post as Chief Executive of ABRSM on 1 January 2015.

He was formerly the Chief Executive of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and before that had served as Director, Culture, at the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, with responsibility in the senior civil service for cultural policy, including music education.

From 2001 to 2008, Michael was Chief Executive of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and acted as Associate Cultural Director for Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture in 2008 having led the partnership between the major cultural organisations in the City. He is currently a Board member of the Birmingham Royal Ballet.

It is an enormous privilege to be given this opportunity to celebrate the excellence of the musicians attending and performing in today’s High Scorers’ Concert. Inspiring achievement in music is central to our mission and I should like to say, on behalf of ABRSM, a huge thank you to the parents and teachers who have encouraged and supported these musicians towards today’s performances.

At ABRSM we strive to support all those who are involved in developing musical standards. This High Scorers’ Concert represents the highest standards of musicianship and the audience here today are experiencing first-hand the quality that has been attained by those who have done so well in their exams. The support that ABRSM offers lies behind these performances; the publications, support for teachers and sharing information with parents. We strive to continuously improve standards and support, but at the heart of

everything we do should be music. This is why it is fitting that the performances today celebrate not just learning, but the power that music has to encourage, inspire and delight.

It is my pleasure to be able to welcome you to this year’s High Scorers’ Concert series and to join with you in celebrating your success in your ABRSM exams. These concerts are always a highlight of the ABRSM calendar and provide an invaluable opportunity for musicians to perform on stage. This achievement is a tribute to your hard work and to the support and guidance you have received from your teachers. My warmest congratulations to you and very best wishes for the future.

High scores in ABRSM exams are only awarded to candidates who have demonstrated all-round musical achievement, and this special event is the culmination of all your committed hard work towards reaching this impressive standard.

Congratulations to everyone celebrating such well-earned success today; you can feel truly proud of yourself, knowing that ABRSM exams are international benchmarks of musical achievement.

ABRSM - High Scorers’ Concert 2017 03

ABRSM has helped many talents to achieve their dreams to be well-versed in the music industry and indirectly contributing to the positive growth of music in Malaysia. These days, we can see the importance of music in one’s life and how it affects people. When words fail, music speaks to the hearts of many.

Examinations Syndicate believes that the success of ABRSM in Malaysia has significant impact on our vision towards becoming a world class assessment leader by 2020 and it is really a privilege to be working with ABRSM for over 60 amazing years! Thus, hats off to all performers and music teachers for this remarkable feat! All the best and have a blast!

Dr. ‘Aliah Ahmad ShahDirector of Examinations Examinations Syndicate Ministry of Education Malaysia

Examinations Syndicate would like to extend its congratulations to ABRSM for being able to hold this prestigious High Scorers’ Concert for all the amazing talents chosen in Malaysia.

Supporting Music Education across Malaysia

It has been another exciting year for ABRSM in Malaysia and this series of 11 High Scorers’ Concerts is an example of our outreach across the country, providing and supporting music making opportunities. This year we were happy to sponsor a number of different initiatives and music education projects.

Malaysian Choral Eisteddfod – National Choir Competition 2017Organised by the Young Choral Academy, this competition is a platform for choirs all over Malaysia to come together with the aim of developing higher choral singing standards. This year’s competition was held in July in Petaling Jaya, with a total of 44 choirs taking part and performances of a very high standard. There were primary and secondary categories, with each choir presenting at least one choral arrangement of a Malaysian song.

1st International Dalcroze ConferenceThis four-day conference was the first of its kind in Malaysia, bringing together international presenters and teachers from across the region to discover Dalcroze eurhythmics. This was a fantastic opportunity for teachers to develop their musicianship skills and find ways to improve their own teaching, with new, creative and fun ideas to apply in their practice. This took place at the Marriott Hotel in Putrajaya and was organised by the Malaysian Youth Orchestra Foundation (MYOF).

Ryan Lewis Malaysia National Consultant

Welcome to our annual High Scorers’ Concert and congratulations to all the musicians who have been selected to perform. The purpose of these concerts is not just for these musicians to share and celebrate their success, but also to give them an opportunity to play in front of an audience and further develop their performance skills; something which goes beyond just the exam experience.

04 ABRSM - High Scorers’ Concert 2017

Malaysian Wind Music Prize 2017This prize is a successful and unique initiative, organised by Kojereeds, which has been going since 2014. The project aims to provide opportunities and professional development to wind players across Malaysia. Not only does it offer performance platforms, but also serves to promote and support the learning of wind instruments to a high level. This is achieved through audience exposure during the recital tour and educational projects in schools, which also form part of the outreach work. This year’s winner was oboist, Alyssa Yam.

Euroasia Strings Competition and Piano Festivals 2017The Euroasia Strings Competition and Festival continues to go from strength to strength, giving budding string players across Malaysia the chance to compete, as well as exposing them to high levels of performance. Also incorporated were three piano festivals in Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru and Kuching. As recipients of the ABRSM Patron’s Prize 2017, the Euroasia Association of Performing Arts also used the funding to conduct a number of educational workshops for students and teachers across the country.

Johor Bahru Classical Music Festival 2017Now in its 3rd year, the festival took audiences on a journey to experience classical music that transcends generations, soundscapes and cultures. The concerts featured local and international artists, including the Siam Sinfonietta from Thailand. There were also educational workshops, including the art of violin making and an insightful presentation on John Williams’ soundtrack to the film Star Wars (with costumes, lightsabers and all!). Something for everyone, this was another successful and well-curated classical music festival in JB.

In addition, we sponsored many other festivals, competitions, and educational projects across Malaysia this year, including the Malaysia Percussion Festival (Kuala Lumpur), the 24th KK Music and Dance Festival, and the Ipoh Music Festival.

We organised over 20 teacher support workshops, examiner Q&A sessions and more recently, a full day seminar with our Chief Examiner, John Holmes, presenting on the new ARSM performance diploma. The seminar was attended by nearly 300 teachers and there was even a cake to cut; celebrating a successful 1st year of ARSM exams in Malaysia!

Altogether, it has been a pleasure collaborating with so many passionate, dedicated, and innovative organisations in 2017. We look forward to another action-packed year in 2018, but for now we hope you enjoy our High Scorers’ Concert. Again, many congratulations to all the high scoring candidates and in particular a special thank you to their teachers, who have worked hard behind the scenes to support their students’ development and prepare them for the concert today.

“It gives you somewhere to aim for. If you’ve done Grade 8, it’s a nice bridge to DipABRSM. ”Member of the Junior DepartmentRoyal Academy of Music

Having finished my Grade 8 Singing Exam and knowing that I would be waiting for a while before taking the Diploma, the ARSM exam served as a great opportunity to essentially “warm-up” and bridge the gap of these two exams. Being able to focus on just the performance aspect made it more like I was preparing my own recital rather than an exam, which poses different challenges but I believe was an essential step in my growth and journey to becoming a professional musician. I would definitely encourage any other musicians in a similar situation after their Grade 8 to take the ARSM exam! All the best!

I chose ARSM because it was a pure performance examination. I also enjoyed the freedom of choosing my own pieces. The examination experience was great, with a friendly examiner, peaceful environment and good piano to match. There were certainly challenges, as ARSM boasts quite a challenging repertoire. To anyone who is thinking of taking this examination, I personally recommend it. It acts as a post-grade 8 examination, and as preparation for higher level diploma examinations, but I would suggest you make sufficient time in your daily life to practice and train for this examination as, like all exams, it requires dedication and hard-work to achieve.

ARSM Diplomas in MalaysiaWe were happy to celebrate 1 year of ARSM diploma exams in Malaysia in 2017. With nearly 100 candidates across the country taking our newest assessment, we caught up with some of the highest scoring ARSM diploma candidates to find out about their exam experience.

08 ABRSM - High Scorers’ Concert 2017

My love and passion for music are the heartbeats of my life and taking the ARSM diploma exam has expanded my performance skills substantially. Choosing the right repertoires for the exam was not exactly an easy task as I enjoyed playing all the pieces that I learned. I settled on pieces that I truly enjoyed mastering and I challenged myself on the technically demanding pieces. I found the comments from the examiner extremely encouraging and motivating, as it gave me a different perspective and ideas on how to progress further! To all aspiring violinists, if you are hoping to attain an ARSM diploma, work at it and set your goals. Tell a story with your program and playing. Nothing is impossible with hard work!

Mohd. Khalid Bin Reduan Kuching, Sarawak ARSM Violin

Honestly, the fifteen year old me chose ARSM because it meant writing programme notes was not required. Little did I know my intentions would bring me new memories that I will forever cherish! Mostly, preparations initially consisted of frustrations and numerous bananas (my favourite fruit). Even so, the satisfaction of successfully performing the recital, not to mention the unexpected results was not only worth it, but a complete blessing.

Thankfully, my examiner was friendly and welcoming, so this helped me feel a little more confident. If you happen to be considering the ARSM, go for it – work hard but have fun at the same time!
