TEACHING FOR ENGAGEMENT, OPPORTUNITY AND SUCCESS

PRINCIPAL’S PERSONAL MESSAGE

Principal Report – Newsletter Week 6 Term 3 2018

It has been a very busy few weeks with staff and students working closely together to ensure that learning is the key focus in all classrooms. As I walk around the school during class time, I am impressed with the level of engagement of the majority of the students. It is concerning for me to see, however, that there are some students who take the opportunity to disrupt the learning of others in the class through negative and off task behaviour. I have spoken to students about the fact that all students have the Right to get an education here at Corrimal HS, but that they all have a Responsibility to ensure that they allow others in the school to get the education that they want. I ask that all students take the time to reflect on their own personal learning journey and look at how they interact with others in the classroom. If they need to make changes to the way they behave in class, it is important that they begin this process, so that they can maximise their own learning and minimise their impact on others.

With the cold weather still upon us, we are still finding that a number of students are coming to school out of uniform. While it is understandable that there are circumstances which sometimes prevent students from wearing full uniform, it is imperative that students make the effort to do this every day. It is a valuable life skill which will prepare them for time in the workforce where they are told to comply with uniform requirements, as well as the other benefits of developing a stronger sense of pride, connectedness and belonging to the school community. I again encourage parents to engage in the conversation with their children about the importance of uniform and to contact the school if there are any particular issues which are preventing your child from wearing their correct uniform every day.

Once again, there have been many additional activities taking place thanks to the hard work of our teaching and support staff. I was pleased to see the organisation and support for the recent Year 10 Subject Selection information evening. This is a critical time for students where they get to make the decisions about their pattern of study to prepare them for their post school pathways. There have been many conversations around the best fit for each student and the school will continue to work closely with students to ensure that we provide courses which best represent the needs of our students.

I was impressed with the organisation, work ethic and products provided by the Year 12 students who recently held their pancake and milkshake fundraiser. Students worked tirelessly in the lead up to the day and supported each other to ensure that they were able to cater for the needs of the masses through the day. The pancake stack and milkshake I received were of a high standard and definitely hit the mark for me. Well done to all students involved.

It was fantastic to see the CHS Cougar Cup teams coming away with the overall victory against Woonona HS to be able to bring home the trophy for the 3rd year in a row. All reports indicate that the students were very well behaved and played well as a team to ensure they came away with the victory. The junior team really stood out in their new playing kit and a huge thanks go out to all people involved in the design and purchase of the gear. Thank you especially to the Corrimal Cougars Rugby League Club for their support of our students.

Congratulations also goes out to our Debating and Public Speaking teams for outstanding performances over the past couple of weeks. The Debating team enjoyed a trip down to Gerringong after being named Champions and once again represented the school with pride and

integrity. Outstanding performances also by our students at the Public Speaking Tournament recently held at Holy Spirit College Bellambi. Well done and congratulations to all students involved. It was great to be able to host over 100 Year 5 students from our CoS feeder schools yesterday as they enjoyed the ‘Year 7 Taster Day’. A well organised event by the CHS Transition team, ably supported by many staff and student helpers. Speaking to many of the students during their break, it was evident that all students really enjoyed the day with activities ranging from cooking to STEM to PE to Industrial Arts, History, English and more. Thank you to all of the teachers from the Primary schools for their support and a huge congratulations to all of the Primary students who attended for their outstanding behaviour and participation in the activities. I look forward to the opportunity to see these students again in Year 6 and then as CHS students in 2020. Further great news… This year, Corrimal High School will be participating as a school in the Spring Into Corrimal Grand Parade on Sunday, 9 September. We will be joining our CoS Primary Schools and we ask students to meet us at 9:30am in Short Street. The parade will begin at 10:00am and progress through Corrimal, concluding at Collins Street (around 10:30am). Students are required to wear full school uniform on the day. We are looking forward to proudly joining our Community of Schools, as we parade with the many other organisations, on a very special day for the Corrimal Community. Please encourage your child to be a part of this as we look to further develop our school within the community. Finally, this week I am very excited to be commencing my visits to our CoS Primary schools to start talking to them about their journey to High School and what Corrimal HS can offer them as we move towards the future. YEAR 10 TO 11

SUBJECT SELECTION

On Monday August 13, the staff at Corrimal High School held the 2018 Year 10 to 11 Subject Selection Evening. Students, along with parents and carers, received vital information from their Year Adviser, Careers Adviser and Faculty Teachers to assist with selecting subject to study in the 2019 Preliminary course.

Please remember, subject selection forms need to be submitted to the Careers Adviser, along with USI forms.

ENGAGE 2518

Corrimal High Students involved in the Engage 2518 program have been attending TAFE campuses each Friday and familiarising themselves with many industries. The intent is to expose the students to industries by undertaking small projects or gain hand-on experience, so they can identify a passion for a particular workplace sector. Students enjoy the opportunity and have indicated they are far more likely to engage in further training at TAFE in the future as a result. Along with this, the Engage 2518 group were granted a donation of building materials from Bunnings Bellambi. The group were able to build a huge multi-functional table to use in front of the Community Café. Corrimal High students from the Engage 2518 cohort were involved with the construction and the intent is for community members to use the table as a place to meet & socialise, undertake art & craft projects, or just to enjoy a cappuccino from the Young Beans Café. The Engage 2518 cohort will also use the table to build on employability and life skills. We hope it serves to engage the community of Bellambi.

COUGARS CUP 2018

On August 16, Corrimal High School students participated in the 3rd Annual Cougar’s Cup (Corrimal HS vs Woonona HS) held on the senior field at Robert Ziems Park. This annual competition showcases three teams – U14s Boys, Opens Girls and Opens Boys – with the overall victory going to the school with the most accumulated points overall after all three games. The U14s performed spectacularly in the opening match. A great defensive line along with some outstanding offensive performances by our young students helped lead Corrimal High School to a solid 16-4 victory. The Opens Girls match followed with some strong running from our Corrimal High School squad. While the lead changed several times throughout the progression of the match, the toughness of our girls resulted in 32-28 point win. The Opens Boys were last to play and were quickly on the defensive as Woonona High School made some great early line breaks. The boys, not to be out done, and after a little inspirational half time rev up by the coaches, put points on the board. Unfortunately, they were not able to win the game, however, a last 30 second kick from Brendon Tiere and an amazing catch by Arlyn Connelly resulted in the extra points needed to walk away with the Cougar’s Cup Trophy for the third year in a row. Great effort by all players, the outstanding spectators, coaches Mr Luskan, Mr Mulder and Mr Wellings and coordinator Mr Foster.

KEEPING IT LOCAL

Corrimal High School would like to thank the Junior and Senior Corrimal Cougars Rugby League Club for their generous sponsorship which has allowed Corrimal High School to purchase a new set of football jerseys. We would also like to thank Ms Lani Balzan for her beautiful Indigenous artwork donated to the school to be included on the jerseys. Corrimal High School has a large percentage of indigenous students and we would like to acknowledge the Wodi Wodi people of the Dharawal Nation for allowing us to play this great game on their land.

SCIENCE WEEK 2018

Ms Temples Year 9 and Year 7 Classes have been working together during Science week. Students in Year 7 have been enjoying special Science Week activities in their science classes presented to them by several enthusiastic students in Year 9. Year 9 students lead lesson activities which included making walking water, elephant’s toothpaste, slime and lava lamps. Science week runs from 11th to the 19th of August and is a great opportunity for students to ignite a curiosity in Science that may one day make them the “Game Changers and Change Makers” the theme of this year’s celebrations.

TEACHING FOR ENGAGEMENT, OPPORTUNITY AND SUCCESS

AIME 2018

On Friday 17th August I had the privilege of escorting five Indigenous students from Corrimal High School to the University of Wollongong. Kaylem Connolly, Teleah Williams and Jean Fuller of Year 10, and Arlyn Connolly and Bunyarra Robinson of Year 9 had a fantastic day of participating in a variety of different activities. The student’s positive attitude throughout the day was appreciated by the tutors and their interaction with their peers from other schools and the tutors was to be admired. All of the students should be extremely pleased of the way they conducted themselves, and as a teacher at Corrimal High they did the school proud.

SPECTACULAR ACHIEVEMENT

Fletcher McFarlane is a perfect example of the old saying "hard work pays off" even in sport. Last year as a student at Corrimal High, Fletcher was recognised during the Combined Boys high school senior tournament which gave him the opportunity to trial with Sydney FC. With approval from the Wollongong Wolves Fletcher trained with Sydney half a dozen times to prove his commitment and ability. This is the same tournament that Fletcher was selected for at the age of 14 to represent as a student of the school. Being selected made him the youngest ever to be selected as a player of the senior squad.

TEACHING FOR ENGAGEMENT, OPPORTUNITY AND SUCCESS

Fletcher was offered a position with the under 18's for this season which he has thoroughly enjoyed. The season has been very successful thus far securing the minor premiership. Fletcher was also part of the Sydney FC un17s team that went to Netherlands to play in the most recognised under 17 club tournament in the world and they came up against the likes of PSG, Ajax and Sporting Lisbon in the 'future cup'. Fletchers outstanding efforts over the 2018 NPL1 season rewarded him with an invitation to join the under 20's Sydney FC squad for the 2019 NPL1 Season.

FAREWELL Farewell Fiona and Milo. Those cute calves had to say good bye to all the pats and cuddles last Friday as they returned to their home on a dairy farm in the Southern Highlands. They were picked up by their owners Jane and Grant Sherborne who kindly loan us two adorable calves each year. They have been returned fatter and more confident than when they arrived as 3-week-old calves. The Cows Create Careers initiative is a great way to introduce students to careers in agriculture, particularly the dairy industry. Preparing milk formula, hand feeding and taking growth measurements twice-a-day has been confidently undertaken by the agriculture students and interested students who will hopefully be inspired by the experience.

Congratulations to Corrimal High School who participated in the NSW CHS Boys Softball Knockout in Newcastle on Tuesday August 28 and Wednesday August 29. The team performed exceptionally throughout the competition against the best schools across the state. They learnt a lot from these experiences and in their final match they had a comprehensive victory over MacIntyre High School. Well done to all those students who participated as they represented their school with pride and were excellent role models for Corrimal High and the South Coast region. Thank you to Mr Roger for his support in getting the team to Newcastle, Mr Abbott for the time he devoted in coaching the team to the South Coast final and finally to Mr Sullivan for giving up his time to assist the team over the two days. Well done boys and I look forward to another successful year next year.

One of the new initiatives that I have started since arriving at Corrimal High School is our Foyer

Featured Artist Program. This provides students with the opportunity to have their artwork

displayed in the foyer of the school. This month, the Foyer Featured Artists were: Riham Al Jnedi

and Siham Al Jnedi.

FOYER FEATURED ARTIST – SIHAM AL JENDI – ‘AL PETRA, JORDAN’ ACRYLIC PAINT ON CANVAS

This painting is inspired by Siham’s best friend Rahaf. This is an image of Rahaf on her Year 12 School excursion.

FOYER FEATURED ARTIST – RIHAM AL JENDI – ‘LILLY GIRL’ GOUACHE PAINT ON CANVAS

This painting is inspired by the decorative design ideas of the Parisian Art Deco artists who loved the curving shapes of nature. Riham has loved the opportunity at CHS to develop her painting and design skills.
