When the need for a high performance filtration system is present, Whittier Filtration has the design experience to select the proper parameters and operatingguidelines to achieve the results desired.
CONVENTIONAL DOWNFLOW MEDIA FILTERS
For extremely effective solids removal at flow rates upto 5 gallons per minute per square foot (GPM/ft2) theConventional Downflow media filter offers an economicalsolution. Media beds can be sand, sand/anthracite,garnet/anthracite or anthracite depending on the service application.
Typical installations use vertical vessels with headerlateral distributors or a strainer plate design. Horizontalunits are also offered for larger flow rates for economy incost and space. Most installations require the use of airscour for cleaning the media when applications have difficult solids to remove.
This design is well suited for water treatment applica-tions such as removal of turbidity, softening processes precipitates, oxidized iron and manganese, and following aclarifier. This filter can be constructed of alloy materials foruse in mining and corrosive applications such as copperelectrolyte in solvent extraction/electrowinning circuits.
HIGH RATE DOWNFLOW, HRD
The HRD sand filter offers high-performance filtrationand is used in difficult process applications. The flux rate istypically 5-20 gallons per minute per square foot (GPM/ft2)and utilizes a proven distribution design to enable excellent hydraulic coverage during high-rate operation.The media bed is similar to the conventional filter exceptthat the high velocity can drive the solids deeper into themedia bed and achieve higher solids loading and extendedrun cycles.

These filters can be used for filtration of seawater forinjection systems, produced water, refinery waste water,steel mill caster water and severe applications where oil orsticky solids are present. Systems are fully automated anduse materials of construction required for the application.Piping can be carbon steel, coated, stainless steel or FRP asrequired. Air scour blowers and backwash pump systemsare provided for proper cleaning of the media.
We offer full automation with instrumentation packages to control the system to meet custom specifications. Typically flow balancing controls areemployed on high rate systems with multiple filters anddifferential pressure instruments are used to monitor the performance.
