There has been much discussion l a t e l y o n t h e President list-serve about rebranding S i s t e r h o o d t o m a k e i t m ore a p p e a l i n g t o

younger members. Sisterhood is seen as their mothers’ organization. Much of the discussion is about finding alternative names. Sisterhood is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as “a relationship between sisters or a society of women devoting themselves to religious or charitable work.”

It appears to me that Sisterhood is the right name for our group. We try to promote relationship-building between the women of our PJTC community, and we are definitely devoted to the synagogue and supporting its many programs. Yes, my mother was a Sisterhood

member and president at B’nai Tikvah in Westchester, and I proudly joined PJTC Sisterhood in my late twenties when we came to Pasadena. We are reaching out to all members by trying to develop programming that speaks to every age group. Our Rosh Chodesh evenings, Sisterhood Shabbat and various classes are great cross-generational opportunities to get together. We will also be offering some family-oriented programs and events that may be more focused to a particular group, such as our recent Myths of College Acceptance evening.

Please send in your dues now and let your voices be heard as we strive to develop programs of interest and ways to financially support synagogue projects, and continue to provide both spiritual and actual nourishment to PJTC (we still do the onegs on Friday nights whenever needed.)

S h a l o m , P J T C Community!

It has been an honor to meet so many of you in my first few months as your Education Director. I am grateful for your hospitality, patience, and kindness as I get settled. One of my goals is to forge meaningful relationships with as many families as possible to make sure that LBSRS is meeting the needs of our religious school families and the PJTC community as a whole.

One of my favorite pieces of Torah that I like to take out of context can be found in the Babylonian Talmud Brachot 62a:

“It is Torah and I must learn it.” For a good time, check out this quote’s actual context. I use it here to say that I treasure each interaction, no matter how brief, as each meeting gives me insight into PJTC’s values and culture. Every connection I make, whether it is answering an email about religious school

snacks or offering pastoral care during a time of crisis, is an opportunity to learn the Torah of PJTC.

If you have not already done so, please stop by my office and introduce yourself. I always have tea and snacks to share. I look forward to learning with you and from you in the coming years.

The FLAME 3 September 2017

Men’s Club wishes a sweet New Year to all our PJTC family. Men’s Club will again be contributing support for the High Holy Day Shuttle to our outlying parking areas.

Our traditional back-to-school Pancake Breakfast will occur on Sunday, September 10 starting at 9:00 AM. This free Pancake

Breakfast has been our gift to all our school parents and students to start studies on a high note in a celebratory way for more than five years.

On August 6, Fred and Lori Rotenberg hosted the Men’s Club-sponsored USY Pool Party. Fifty USY members, parents, siblings and others enjoyed another very successful event, including a catered meal, swimming and games. This has become an annual tradition of Fred and Lori’s, which one attendee has called “the best example of Off-Site Relational Judaism” she had ever experienced. Fred and Lori, we can’t thank you enough.

Men’s Club enjoyed another outing to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes baseball game on July 15, complete with fireworks. This has been a wonderful family outing for all each year.

We congratulate Enrique Fleishman on his bar mitzvah on August 19, Leo Metivier on his bar mitzvah on August 25, and Audrey Cohen on her upcoming bat mitzvah on September 9. We congratulate all their proud parents as well. Men’s Club is proud to offer each b’nai mitzvah candidate a Yad at the respective Friday night services.

This coming Veterans Day weekend, Men’s Club is looking forward to honoring all our veterans for their service in defending our freedoms and to remember those who lost their lives, on Sunday, November 12. We are planning a wonderful breakfast program and hope to see our veterans and those who wish to honor them attend.

Men’s Club by Ira Blitz, President

As we begin preparations for the High Holy Days, this would be a good time to reflect on our many achievements during the past year.

Our outstanding Rabbi Raucher has just started his second year as Senior Rabbi, and our new Education Director, Rabbi Aimee Gerace, joined us in July. Aimee brings with her many years of experience as an educator and administrator, and we’re

very confident that she will improve the quality of our already exceptional Louis B. Silver Religious School. In addition, earlier this year we hired Theresa Brekan as our Operations Manager, taking over for Bruce Applebaum, who retired.

We are currently in the process of beautifying and improving our campus. We’ve removed the overgrown cypress trees that blocked the West side of Wohlmann Hall. We’ve also removed and replaced the pergola in front of the Main Building because of termite damage. These projects were necessary to allow us to paint the exteriors of the Main Building, Wohlmann Hall and the Weizmann Day School Building as well.

The lounge, office suites and hallways in the Main Building have all been painted and re-carpeted. We’re currently in the process of renovating and upgrading the restrooms in the Main Building. This will include new fixtures, countertops, partitions and tile.

Wohlmann Hall is also having a major facelift, including new painted walls, new carpeting, a new ceiling, new windows and doors, a new air conditioning system, and remodeled restrooms.

PJTC has “gone green” with solar panels that were installed on the roof of the Main Building. We expect to realize an annual savings of $14,000 to $20,000 from reduced electrical usage. Under Faith Segal’s exceptional leadership, we recovered from last summer’s “flood” in the Sanctuary. Our insurance coverage enabled us to paint and re-carpet the Sanctuary and refinish the wood floor in the Social Hall at no cost to the Synagogue.

In May, the Board approved a budget for the 2017-18 fiscal year. This budget is essentially the same as last year’s. In order to balance the budget, $240,000 will have to be transferred from the l’Dor v’Dor Endowment Fund.

On behalf of Anita and myself, I’d like to wish you all a Chag Sameach, a Sweet New Year. See you at shul.

NFL Season is upon us. Men's Club football tickets are available for $10 each. Contact [email protected].

Board ReportJuly 2017 Board Report – The Board authorized the re-modeling of the Wohlmann Hall Restrooms, the new l’ Dor v’ Dor Foundation Board was appointed, and Sisterhood let the board know that they are remodeling the gift shop to be called the “Sisterhood Spot”.

August 2017 Board Report - The Solar Installation is almost complete, and the board approved the Green Committee to work with our fundraising committee to brainstorm ideas for sponsorship opportunities. The rabbi reported that the summer Friday night Shabbat Service change was positively received. The following construction projects are now completed: painting of the exterior build-ings, and installation of the new pergola at the main building. Permits were obtained for the main building restrooms, and it is our hope to have them finished by the High Holy Days.

MESSAGE FROM THE KOLLINS

Rabbi Gil and Cindy will be saying good-bye to the PJTC community on their upcoming move to the Fountainview in Reseda in October. They are planning a farewell Kiddush; details to be announced soon.

The Interfaith Study Group celebrates its tenth year in 2017. We meet monthly, usually on the second Sunday, and rotate meetings: PJTC, All Saints Episcopal Church, and the Islamic Center of Southern California.

On Sunday, September 10, from 5:00 to 7:30 PM we will meet at PJTC. We welcome speaker Nancy Steele, D.Env. (Doctor of Environmental Science & Engineering, UCLA), a professional conservationist and environmentalist. Dr. Steele has helped preserve many wilderness areas and is recent past president of Neighborhood Unitarian Universalist Church. Dr. Steele’s topic is “Bringing Our Values to Bear on Today’s World: Healing the Earth and Healing Ourselves.” She will describe her life as a practical scientist, her perspective on current environmental issues, her faith, and what it means to have “respect for the interdependent web of existence of which we are all a part.”

This is our first ISG event for the fall. The one-hour program is followed by a Q & A period, and a vegetarian potluck meal. Please bring something to share, if you can. Coffee, tea, paper goods and cutlery are provided. Contact: Cecilia Fox, c/o PJTC office with any questions.

USY/Kadima

by Cecilia Fox, GSC Member

by Melissa Levy, Youth Director

USY and Kadima are well on their way to another exciting, fun-filled year!

Our teen leaders were hard at work planning the fall semester during their weekend-long leadership retreat. Many thanks to Jeff and Anita Landau for hosting part of the retreat weekend.

Thanks also to the PJTC Men’s Club for sponsoring an end-of-summer pool party for USY and Kadima families, and to Fred & Lori Rotenberg for hosting that event. It was a wonderful opportunity for new and seasoned families to mingle and learn about our youth programs.

Our USYers joined other Jewish teens in the SGPV for a joint trip to the beach. Upcoming September/October events include:

Sunday, 9/3: USYers (grades 7-12) from all over SoCal, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico are meeting up at Disneyland.

Sunday, 9/10: Our opening Kadima (grades 4-6) event at PJTC: icebreakers, shooting a Harry Potter-themed video for the High Holy Days, and more.

Tuesday, 9/12: Opening USY Lounge Night, with icebreakers, a life-size game of Hungry Hungry Hippos, ruach, Harry Potter-themed video shoot, and Israel Escape Room.

9/15-17: Our teen leaders will be heading to American Jewish University for Far West USY annual Leadership Training Institute (LTI), where they will train with other Jewish teen leaders from all over the area.

Want up-to-date information about our youth programming? Please contact me at [email protected] and I will add you to our eblasts!

Many of you are aware that my husband Jake and I are expecting our first child in October, so this will be my last article for several months. While I am on maternity leave, our youth groups will be in the capable hands of Alanna Sanford, a PJTC USY alumna who has been working side-by-side with me over the past few months to learn the ropes. She will be available via

[email protected] while I am out. Our Youth Advisor Aaren Heller will also continue to work with our youth until she goes on her own maternity leave about a month after I do! Here’s to the next generation of Jews!

The FLAME 5 September 2017

B'nai MitzvahEnrique Fleischman was called to the torah

for his bar mitzvah on August 19. He was born on July 17, 2004 in Hackensack, New Jersey. He attended the JCC school there until he was four years old, when the family moved to La Canada Flintridge.

Enrique is the older brother of Sara, age 10. He is currently in eighth grade at La Canada Junior High. He has a passion for the entertainment business, and would like to work at Disney when he is older. He is even more passionate about theme parks and traveling. Enrique loves to plan all the family trips and enjoys learning about other cultures very much.

Leo Metivier celebrated his bar mitzvah on August 26. His bio was included in the July/August issue of the FLAME.

Audrey Cohen, daughter of Joshua and Paris and little sister of Ethan and Rebecca, will be called to the Torah on September 9. She is in the eighth grade at La Canada High School and a member of the 7/8 vocal ensemble. Her favorite hobbies are baking, musical theater, cats, and slime.

Audrey is a merit-awarded pianist, a Girl Scout Silver Award recipient, and a member of National Charity League, Glendale, a mother-daughter service organization. She participates in many service projects and recently received an award for outstanding number of service hours. Her various services include making lunches and blankets for the homeless and tutoring kids at Hathaway-Sycamores Learning Lab.

Her bat mitzvah project is to add to and organize the book shelves of the Learning Lab for the students to enjoy. Donations of new and gently used books for school-age kids can be dropped off in the lobby of PJTC. (Thank you.)

14th Annual Daniel Pearl Concert Scheduled for October 19 at 11:00 AM

Weizmann Day School kicked off another exciting school year on August 29. Weizmann is a small, K-8 Jewish day school located here on PJTC’s campus. We are the only Jewish day school between the San Fernando Valley and Las Vegas. We pride ourselves on being a warm,

welcoming, diverse community.Weizmann will be hosting Open Houses for prospective

students at 9:30 AM on October 25, November 29, and December 13. Please join us to learn more about our school.

In addition, we will once again host a free, interfaith concert honoring the memory of Daniel Pearl. This year’s concert is scheduled for 11:00 AM on October 19 at PJTC. Please join us for this special event!

Daniel Pearl was an accomplished journalist, ultimately holding the position of South Asia Bureau Chief for The Wall Street Journal. Pearl was murdered by Pakistani terrorists in early 2002. Throughout his life, Daniel Pearl was passionate about music. In late 2002, Daniel’s family invited people everywhere to dedicate a musical event on the day that Daniel would have turned 39 years old: October 10, 2002. Since that time, the event – Daniel Pearl World Music Days – has grown to include over 13,000 events in 140 countries.

Weizmann will host New Horizon Muslim School and St. Marks Christian School in a musical program. It is a beautiful sight to see children from the three Abrahamic faiths on the stage singing songs of peace and hope. Please make it a point to join us this year!

Weizmann’s Mission: to provide an enriching education, rooted in Jewish traditions and values, which fosters critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, character and compassion. To schedule a tour of our school, inquire about the school, or make a donation, please call the office at (626) 797-0204 or visit www.weizmann.net.

Rabbi Raucher's article continued from page 1

reconciliation so that we can restore that which has been lost? Professor David R. Blumenthal, author of Facing the Abusing

God, teaches us how to commit ourselves to teshuvah through his interpretation of two of our most sacred maxims. “How do you love your neighbor as yourself?” He says, “By allowing yourself to be silenced by your neighbor’s pain, a silence of awe and of openness. And by not allowing yourself to be silenced by your neighbor’s pain, by speech which is powerful and comforting.” He continues, “And how do you love the Lord your God, with all your heart? By allowing yourself to be silenced by the presence of God, a silence of amazement and of receptivity. And by not allowing yourself to be silenced by God, by speech which is strong and just.”

All we may need in order to make teshuvah happen are our natural abilities of: compassion and strength. Compassion to try to understand the pain we may have caused another person. And strength to help us accept what we have done and to make it right. In turn these attributes will allow us to love our neighbors as ourselves, and to love God with all of our heart.

May we all have a year full of compassion and strength.

A VIEW FROM CALIFORNIARESISTING THREATS TO OUR DEMOCRACY & MOVING FORWARD:

Maria Elena Durazo epitomizes the phrase “Si se puede–Yes we can.” For over 30 years, she has championed workers’ rights, fought for civil rights and marriage equality, led campaigns for a healthier environment, and moved tens of thousands of Californians to take action. Called “the single most influential individual in Los Angeles politics” by the L.A. Times, Durazo became UNITE HERE’s General Vice President for Immigration, Civil Rights, and Diversity in 2014. In February of 2017, she was elected Vice-Chair of the Democratic National Committee, and was also recently named Vice Chair of

LA 2024, the city’s Olympic committee.

Join us for a vital discussion on how people living in California can resist and move forward against current threats to our democracy.

Solar Panels are on the Roof! After more than four years of diligent work, PJTC can

proudly announce the installation of solar panels on the roof of the main building, including Galpert Sanctuary. Though not visible from the street, the solar array features 166 panels and is expected to produce over 95,000 kilowatt hours of energy each year, supplying almost 100% of the energy needs of the main building on the PJTC campus. The system is expected to pay for itself in nine years through savings in electricity costs. In the process, over the life of this system, over 2,800 tons of carbon dioxide will be eliminated from our carbon footprint.

In completing this solar project, PJTC demonstrates the following core Jewish values:

Tikkun Olam – we are obligated to repair, protect and preserve the physical world.

Shomrei Adamah – we must be guardians and diligent caretakers of the earth.

L’dor V’dor – generations came before us; generations will come after us. We are obligated to our children and our children’s children to address environmental challenges that confront us all.

With the installation of solar, PJTC achieves several goals, including reducing our monthly operating expenses, lowering our carbon footprint from electrical power consumption, joining other faith communities in a broader effort to protect our world for future generations, and finally, setting an example of effective social action for our children and our entire congregation.

This solar panel project was a cooperative venture. The Green Committee worked with the Board of Directors, PJTC members who lent their professional expertise, and the always-essential facilities and staff personnel of PJTC. We appreciate the efforts of everyone who made this project come to fruition!
