PRINCIPAL’S NOTES:

LORI P. WIMBUSH Greetings Titan family,

As we come to the close of our first nine weeks, students are settling into academic routines and participating in a range of activities, both in and out of school. We are focusing on opportunities that help students make appropriate decisions. HVHS administration is asking parents to join us in educating students about the negative effects of alcohol and drug use and the seriousness of the consequences that are implemented when substances are used. Red Ribbon week will begin October 23rd. Our Prevention Club is gearing up for activities that raise awareness about destructive behaviors. We believe that through the opportunities and education we provide, and by advocating for our students to make good decisions, we can work collectively with our parents and community members to promote our children’s safety and well-being.

In continuing to engage our parents, families, and community members, and being new to the Titan family, I am excited to organize our coming fall Titan 21 Night. HVHS has established a wonderful tradition with these public exhibition nights. Fall Titan 21 Night will be on November 15th, from 6:30 - 8:30 pm. I cannot wait to see what projects and innovations the students have in store for us, and I hope to see you all there!

IMPORTANT ATTENDANCE INFORMATION The Commonwealth of Virginia requires public schools to maintain attendance records for all students. Compulsory attendance is required for children “who will have reached their fifth birthday on or before September 30 of any school year and who has not passed the eighteenth birthday” as noted in the Code of Virginia (§22.1-254).

Regular school attendance is critical to a student’s success in school; therefore, if a student does not attend school regularly, he/she may not be successful.

The information below will help us keep accurate attendance records for your child.

Tardy to School. All students should be in their classes or designated areas by 8:20 am. A student arriving late to school must report directly to the Attendance Office. The student should have a written note stating the cause of their tardiness. An “appointment” excuse should come directly from a doctor, dentist, court, etc. Since Roanoke County provides bus transportation to school, car issues are not an excused tardy. Students must arrive to school by 11:35am to participate in ANY afternoon school activities.

Tardy to Class. Attendance is taken at the beginning of each block. If your child arrives to any block after the tardy bell, he/she must report to the Attendance Office for a pass to class. If a student arrives unexcused, parents will get an email through our tardy sweep program.

Absences. We must account for all absences. Parents should call 562-3900, ext 22008 to notify the Attendance Office of their child’s absence. Please leave a message on voicemail, if necessary, stating the student’s name and reason for absence. The Attendance Office will attempt to contact by phone each absentee’s parent/guardian who has not notified the school. If no contact has been made, the absence will be marked as unexcused. Excused absences include doctor or dentist appointments, personal illness or illness in the family, death in the family, involuntary court appearance, or college visit. Please send appropriate documentation: note from doctor/dentist office, court, college, etc.

Priors. A “prior” is needed for planned absences from school for an extended period of time (family trips, surgery, and the like). A parent/guardian must send in a note at least one week prior to the absence stating the dates and reason for absence. The student will have each teacher sign the form and then return it to the Attendance Office for approval from Principal Wimbush. The student must make arrangements with each teacher concerning missed work. If the form is not returned to the attendance office, the absence will be considered unexcused.

Early Dismissals. If your child needs to be dismissed during the school day, please have the student bring a note to the Attendance Office before first block. This is the preferred way for early dismissals and the least disruptive for classrooms and teaching time. We recognize that last minute doctor or dental appointments come up occasionally; however, please understand it may take time to release the student if they did not bring a note in prior to the school day start and you need to call or come in for student pickup. Your student will not be released from class until they receive a note from Attendance stating the specified time and reason for dismissal. A text from a parent to their student does not dismiss the student from class. An “appointment” excuse should come directly from the doctor/dentist, court, etc. Calls may be made home to verify an early dismissal note.

Emergency Information. Please fill out the emergency information form. It is available online or at the school. It is crucial that we have emergency contact information on hand. If you plan to be out of town without your child please send a note containing emergency contacts.

Tardy Sweep

2016-17

HVHS Students and Parents:

It is important for students and parents to be aware of the Tardy Sweep Policy for HVHS. It is critically important to remember that HVHS students are expected to arrive on time to school and to all classes each day. Late arrivals disrupt the learning atmosphere for all students in a classroom. Each day between all blocks the HVHS staff and administration will be conducting tardy sweeps. Students who are in violation of the tardy policy will be subject to consequences, which will be consistently and equitably enforced. The sweep will be conducted at the tardy bell to each class. Any student out of class, without a valid pass from a teacher, will immediately be directed to an administrator or staff member. The administrator or staff member will immediately assign a consequence and the parent will receive an email detailing the consequence assigned. The chart below details the consequences.

Number of late arrivals or tardy to class Consequences

1st and 2nd Tardy Warning

3rd and 4th Tardy One-Hour Detention (before/after school) Must be served within 5 school days

Parent will be notified by email

5th and 6th Tardy Two-Hour Detention (before/after school) Must be served within 5 school days

Parent will be notified by email

7th and 8th Tardy Saturday School Assignment

Parent will be notified by administration

9th Tardy Parent Conference will be scheduled by an administrator

10th and more Administrator will contact the parent and a referral will be made to the School Social Worker
