Effective practice with the London Managed Learning Environment Brookside Infant School

    Brookside Infant Schools ICT Leader

    Nicola Maher and MLE Administrator

Wendy Pope have used the Forum

tool within the MLE to develop a

Construction Site allowing all users to

feed into the development of the MLE.

    This is proving very useful.

Ten Top Tips for making the most of the MLE all happening in Havering schools now...

    TeachingandLearning/ParentalEngagement Year Groups vs.

    Classes

    Year Groups offer

    great timesaving by

    allowing weblinks,

    homework etc to be

    shared across a year

    group, rather than

    duplicating content

    Supporting teaching

    and learning

    Add weblinks to

    reinforce work

    undertaken in class

    Post homework and

    even allow pupils to

    hand-in online

    Research projects

    linked to theme weeks

    with tasks linked to

    research skills e.g.

    using the Internet,

    local library etc.

    Literacy and Maths

    Letters and sounds

    room upload sound

    clips and weblinks

    Book Review room

    focusing on an author

    with weblinks, video-

    clips and activities

    Maths activity room

    linked to NNS

    Interactive Teaching

    Programs, websites

    (e.g. BBC Number

    Time)

    Intervention

    Programme room

    with links to resources

    to support learning

    School Council

    Room

    Add a Forum for

    pupils to discuss

    school council issues

    online, outside of

    meetings. This could

    then be shared with

    the whole-school to

    add comment

    Engage Parents

    Provide access to

    curriculum overviews

    Weblinks to support

    pupil learning

    Letters home

    Examples of their

    children's work

    Key schooldocuments and dates

PTA news and otherinformation such as E-Safety advice

    Leadershipand

    Management

    Reduce Meetings:

    Use a Forum to

    discuss an issue e.g.

    Bookweek instead of

    using time in a staff

    meeting

    Monitoring Planning:

Add a room for staff to

    upload planning,

    which can then be

    accessed without the

    need to print off

    copies

    Streamline School

    Improvement and

    SEF processes by

    uploading your SEF

    and School

    Improvement Plans

    with online folders to

    store evidence

    Create a Governors

    Room including:

    Meeting agendas/

    minutes/dates

    Policies

    Links to Governor.net

    Governor Training

    opportunities

    Site Manager/

    Caretaker Room:

    Add any sites and

    building issues,

    allowing the

    caretaker/site

    manager to see what

    issues have arisen

    and to plan their time

    even more effectively

    SAFEGUARDING: DATA SECURITY

Why the HIAS ICT Team advocate the LGfL (Atomwide) Encrypted Solution...

LGfL Managed Service Encrypted Storage Encrypted storage over the counterUSB & Hard drive versions

    password and biometric access available

    USB & Hard drive versions

password and biometric access availableRelatively expensive compared to unencrypted

storage and over the counter encrypted storage

More expensive than unencrypted storage, less

expensive than LGfL managed service encryptedstorageAllocated to an individual and linked to their LGfLUSO

No specific allocation, but could be shared. Only onepassword per device so passwords have to be sharedtoo.

If the password is forgotten the device password canbe reset by LGfL with permissions from the servicehead/headteacher. Identity authentication uses USOsecurity protocols.

If the password is forgotten the device will not be ableto be accessed, and rendered useless. If passwordsare stored elsewhere, written down, the security of thedevice is compromised.

If the owner of the device is unable to access it(illness/death) the device password can be reset byLGfL with permissions from the service

head/headteacher. Identity authentication uses USOsecurity protocols.

If the owner of the device is unable to access it(illness/death) the device will not be able to beaccessed, and rendered useless. If passwords are

stored elsewhere, written down, the security of thedevice is compromised.

If there are concerns about the owner of the device(capability/disciplinary etc), or there are concernsabout the contents of the device, it can be accessed, with assistance, by LGfL with permissions from theservice head/headteacher. Identity authenticationuses USO security protocols.

If there are concerns about the owner of the device(capability/disciplinary etc), or there are concernsabout the contents of the device, none of the contentscan be examined.

If the device is lost it has a public partition which asksthe finder to return to Atomwide (not LBH adeliberate decision), the school stands a chance ofhaving the device returned to them.

If the device is lost it there is nothing to indicateownership. If labelled in any way it may attractadverse publicity for the school.

Watch out Warner Brothers! As Scotts Primary School unveil their new Apple Mac film studio

Theres a touch of Hollywood over in Hornchurch these days, since Scotts Primary School converted acupboard in their Year 6 classroom into a film studio. Headteacher Simon Abeledo is rightfully proud of thework. Apple Mac computers, funded through Tesco vouchers and double-glazed windows to provide sound-proofing (for 1500) mean that pupils are now able to engage in film and animation work at a very minimalcost. Pupils have been developing their skills very quickly, with support from ICT Leader Jan Taylor.

Crownfield Junior School accept the National Story Telling Video-Conferencing Challenge

To celebrate National Storytelling Week, three professional

Storytellers working for Everyday Magic presented an exciting

videoconference challenge to Primary schools. Here Crownfield

Junior School ICT Leader Suzanne Nott explains...

Four of our Y5's took part. They received great feedback from theprofessional storytellers (all three were listening to thecontributions from the schools). They said our set was fantastic;the children's gestures and expressions when telling the storyreally brought it alive and that the ending sent tingles up theirspines! We were the final school to perform, so spent the

morning enjoying the performances from the eight other schools.

Music Learning Live: Another innovative use of video-conferencing

Engayne Primary School participated in thisexcellent video-conferencing event on Friday 26thFebruary 2010 supported by the Havering
