David’s prestigious place to study at Dutch university A former Holywell High School pupil, David Davies, a first year Bachelor’s student of Computing Science at the University of Groningen, was presented with a laptop, a bouquet of flowers and a university jumper by the president Sibrand Poppema to mark the milestone of being the 30,000th student to enrol at the institute. David said:” I was very surprised when they called me to announce that I was the 30,000th student of the University of Groningen. I am honoured that I am the one to reach this milestone”. John Weir, Acting Headteacher, spoke of the school’s pride after David hit the headlines over in the Netherlands. “We are all immensely proud of David for gaining a place at Groningen University. He is a very mature and amiable young man and I’m sure he will be a great ambassador for Holywell and for Wales”. GLAN LLYN 2014

Dear Parents & Carers, I can’t wait for Christmas! Nothing to do with the presents and everything to do with the atmosphere and the greater sense of family togetherness that is so special at this time of year. My children are still excited and wowed by the whole experience; it’s just great family fun. As you will see from the photos, a lot has happened since August. Fantastic results, which included David’s surprised, but well deserved place at Groningen University as mentioned on the front cover; congratulations once again David. Holywell High School is an ever improving school and the success of our Most Able and Talented (MAT) pupils was more impressive than ever this year, with 100% of MAT pupils achieving 5 or more GCSEs at grade C and above and a third achieving 5 or more GCSEs at A/A* including Maths and English. We are so proud of them and thrilled that their hard work has paid off so magnificently. We are determined to ensure that those aspiring to great things are supported in achieving great things! Best wishes for a safe, happy and fabulous Christmas

Congratulations to Holywell High School on your outstanding triumph at the Rotary Technology Tournament. The judging team selected Holywell High’s intermediate team as they said your students had produced a device that was robust, operated smoothly and worked every time. So that’s just brilliant! We look forward to working with Holywell High in March when we are set to provide mock interviews. Such success must be shouted from the roof tops! With best wishes, Steve Blakesley (Vocational Chair Flint and Holywell Rotary Club)

NEWS FROM THE PE DEPARTMENT

Maisie Williams in Yr 8 has been selected for the Flintshire Development Squad in Netball. A group of Yr 7 gymnasts entered a gym competition at Elfed School last week. They performed their routines and vaults extremely well and were a credit to the school. Well done! Yr 7 netball team beat St Davied’s High School in a home match. Yr 10 also played against St David’s Yr 11 team and whilst they didn’t win they played extremely well! Yr 7 & 8 have had the wonderful opportunity of having their dance lessons delivered by a dance company called NEW Dance. The 5 sessions formed part of the Music & Dance Holywell Art & Craft Mill residency funded by Flintshire County Council.
