Perpetual Motion (PM) always strives to deliver news to the students in innovative ways. Through this edition of Perpetual Motion, we hope that you will be kept updated on MAE Club’s events, starting from the first ever MAE Beach Day, MAE Sharing Night, until the merry and lavish MAE Day! On top of that, we also featured one insightful workshop that organized by MAE Leadership Programme (LDP). We hope that this newsletter can fulfill your curiosity on what has been happening in MAE Club this one semester. President’s NoteOn behalf of the 33rd Management Committee, I would like to convey my sincere greeting to all MAE students.Over the past 2 semesters, MAE Club has striven to cater to the needs of all students in order to bring to them a holistic student life in MAE. This year MAE Club has made several breakthroughs in our 33 years of history. The most significant milestones is the launch of our new logo as part of our re-branding exercise. We hope that students will take pride and associate MAE Club as part of their student

life in MAE. Over the past 2 semesters the club has been working hard to bring the whole MAE Community closer through various events that aims to bond students together. Just to name a few, this year we have our inaugural MAE Beach day at Sentosa which has been a success. Our Night Cycling which is already in its second year and this year our cycling route bring us to the beautiful city landscape. Not to forget our annual MAE Games where professors, staffs and students came together to have a day of fun.

MAE We Get Together. Sounds catchy isn’t it? This is our theme for our MAE Day this year where students came together to have fun as well as to re-energize for the upcoming finals with our fun games as well as our Exam Goodies Bags. The new MAE Club logo will also be officially launched and introduced to the MAE Student community.This year our Freshmen Welcome Day will be 3 days 2 nights. Its core mission is to create a MAE without strangers as well as to integrate the freshmen into our big MAE Family. Do step

forward to be part of us in making this event a successful one.Our Convocation ball theme this year is hunger games and it’s going to be held in Pan–Pacific Hotel on 1st August 2015. Final year students lets come together for the last time to relive the memories for the past 4 years in MAE. Hope to see you there on 1st August.MAE Club is not just about fun. We do take care of the academic side of the students by providing them lecture notes and past year paper solutions. In addition to that, we hold

talks for students. We are very thankful to our wonderful alumni, professors as well as speakers for making those talk enriching.MAE Club will continue to work hard for the students and be the voice of the students. On January 24th, an alternate semester started with a recreational-competitive occasion at Siloso Beach which is generally known as MAE Beach Games 2015. That morning, as they arrived promptly at Sapphire Pavilion, crowds wearing “MAE Beach Games 2015” singlet were seen avid to strive for the day. Competitive environment was felt as they began warming up at the spot. The groupings were divided into 4 noteworthy major groups

with a CGL and 5 groups each.

MAE BEACH GAMES

The recreations were characterized into 2 sorts; The “Minute to Win It” main challenge games and side games. The Game Masters devised the main challenge games themselves, in which the members had to calmly continue hitting a ping-pong ball before passing it to their groupmates without letting it fall to the ground. Another game is “Poker Hunt”, where 2 members of the team assumed their role as poker players while the rest hunted down cards buried in the sand. “Water

Slap” is a game where every member got their general knowledge regarding NTU tested. His partner would get water slapped if he answered incorrectly. “Balloon Tapper” requires every member to act swiftly to tap balloons and keep it from touching the ground. The finale of the segment, “Water Balloon War”, is a large-scaled game played by all groups. The teams had to water-blast other CGLs while defending their own CGL from water-blasts. The team with the driest CGL

would be declared as the winner. The day ended with a remarkable “Minute to Win It” champion declaration with Team 4 as the overall winner.As brilliant as the day was, all participants took a group photo as the remembrance of the wonderful MAE Beach Games 2015 and looking forward to the next MAE Beach Games in 2016!

Guest of Honour, Prof. Louis Phee, gave a welcome speech

The MAE sharing night that was held on the 28th of February was a much awaited event, and the Events Committee of the MAE Club had outdone themselves yet again. Hats off! The final year students who still have not landed their dream jobs and third year students who were still quite hazy about their fu-ture career path, not to mention curious first year and second year students were amongst the attendees.

The evening began with a bountiful buffet dinner with the alumnus and professors. After finishing their dinner, the crowd made their way into the Tan Chin Tuan Lecture Theatre.

The emcee for the evening introduced the theme for the night, “Connecting the minds” and invited the President of MAE Club, Alvin Foo, to give the keynote speech. The President warmly welcomed the Guest of Honour, Prof. Louis Phee, the Associate Chair of Students, Prof. Wong Chee How, the Assistant Chair of Alumni & Development, Prof. Chow Siaw Meng, and the gathered alumni.

The Chairperson of the School of MAE, Prof. Louis Phee, revealed himself as an alumnus of NTU while addressing the attendees. His words were inspiring and instilled a sense of pride about the university among the students. His declaration that he wanted to take MAE into the world’s top ten and make it a globally-renowned school, received a round of applause. The president of the MAE Alumni Club,

Serene Chen then came up to podium where she recollected memories from her time in university and shared about her current career. The event that followed was perhaps one of the most anticipated of the night, a sharing session. It was hosted by Nadarajan Prakash, with three other alumni, Veerappa Rajan from P&G, Jean Chan from S.T. Aerospace, and Chor Yen, a PhD student at NTU. The alumni introduced themselves and as the session progressed, a wide variety of interesting and humorous questions were posed to the alumni. The host had done a pretty good job, and made the session quite fruitful for the curious students. The session came to an end with each person saying a few words of encouragement to the graduating batch and the other students. The most memorable quote was perhaps from Veera, “Follow your dream, and work hard to reach that dream, no matter how much others might discourage you.”

The night had come to a conclusion. Each of the alumni were invited to the stage where they received a memento for taking their time off to come down and share their experiences with the students. The event ended with networking session with refreshments served. The students used this opportunity to network with the alumni and get a first-hand impression of the challenges of the working world in Singapore and what they needed in order to have a successful career.

The alumni sharing night had achieved its purpose and objective to provide the students a platform to network with alumni and gain some valuable insights before then dive into the labor maket.

As the dawn approached, they returned to East Coast Park to view the beautiful sunrise while enjoying their breakfast of the day.

It was breezy, a silent night with faint streetlights all around East Coast Park. The noiseless night was abruptly liven up by the arrival of the crowds of MAE students. The participants proceeded to set up their cycling gears. The MAE crowd began cycling over the city avenue vibrantly. The chilly night could not dampen their spirit and the bicycles’ headlights lit their way forward.

The participants cycled through the city until arriving at Singapore National Stadium where they stopped for the first water break and took a few photographs. After which, they continued their way to Marina Bay Sands and Singapore Flyer. The view along the way was more elegant than expected with the city nightlights on.

After a few kilometers of cycling, they arrived at Satay by the Bay and stopped for a light supper. The special treats of the night were

skewered BBQ prawns, beef, and chicken.The light snacks fueled the

bikers’ appetite and refilled their stamina aswell. After being recharged, they made

their way to the Merlion before arriving at the bridge resembling

a DNA, the Helix Bridge.

After hours of cycling, they hit their final destination of the night, Marina

Barrage, where they relaxed for some time. Some participants were

flying kites tied with lightsticks, making them fly

FYP Talk 2015

Final Year Project (FYP) Talk is an annual event organized by MAE Club targetting the second and third year students. The objective is to give a better understanding of what FYP actually is and what is expected from the students. Attended by many curious and self-driven individuals, it provided a platform for students to clarify any doubts they have regarding FYP. Listed below are several dialogues which were the highlights of the event.

Q: “How does the school ensure fairness of grades across different professors/markers?

A: “Frankly speaking, it is indeed subjective. There is no fixed way to grade. Different professors have different ways to assess their students. Hopefully, the variations are small. However, please rest assured as there will be moderations. Instead of one single opinion, two people will do the grading. This way, it will be fairer.”

Q: “What are the benefits of doing IO-FYP and URECA-FYP? Can we choose a project from our previous company?”

A: “Of course. You can choose the projects from the company you are working for. One main advantage is that you will be able to carry on the work that you have done into FYP. However, please bear in mind that the expectation from the company will be different or sometimes higher.”

Q: “How many AUs to optimally take each semester, so that we will still be able to cope with FYP and other modules?”

A: “It depends on the ability of each student. However, we do not recommend to take more than 15 AUs as FYP can be very demanding and time consuming.”

Q: “How is FYP graded?”

A: “It assessed by 2 people. They are the supervisor and the moderator. The supervisor will grade you based on the quality of your report, while the moderator will grade the quality of your presentation. The good part is that no bell curve for FYP.”

Q: “I am behind schedule in my FYP. Is it possible to extend the deadline?”

A: “No. the date for FYP presentation is already fixed. If you want to graduate on time, extension is not permitted.”

Q: “Can you give us some tips and tricks to get good grades in FYP?”

A: “First of all, impress your supervisor/professor during the first meeting. For instances, be on time and show that you are a hard working student and an

independent learner.Secondly, never say “I don’t know”. Even when you are encountering some problems, think of any possible solutions, propose your ideas, and then ask for advices from your professor. It shows that you are an active thinker. Last but not least, ask very clearly about the objectives of the projects, so that you know what is expected from you.”

Entrepreneurial Mindset and Marketing Strategy A Workshop organised by Leadership Development Programme (LDP)

On the 28th of February 2015, a one-day workshop was conducted for the student leaders, under the flagship of the Leadership Development Programme (LDP) in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU)

The workshop was conducted by our guest speaker, Mr. Jason Ho Kai Joo. Jason is a Private Jeweller and a Chartered Marketer (UK) with 12 years of experienc-es in the areas of B2B, B2C Marketing and Business consulting. He founded his venture, while studying in

the University of Cambridge (England) to offer end-to-end customised diamond jewellery to individuals to remember their unique life stories, The Guild of Storytellers: www.GoStorytellers.com

Academically he holds an Imperial MBA, from Imperial College London (England) and he teaches Marketing and Entrepreneurship, with adjunct faculty appointments from 27 universities in the UK, USA, Australia and Singapore - specifically in the Nanyang Technopreneurship Center, NTU.

Jason is an unorthodox thinker, he challenged the con-ventional flow of a business start-up. Instead of having a business idea first, he advocated the importance of personal readiness and opportunities recognition – and somehow the big idea will come. Also, your business should look for the problems of customers and help to solve them, only then you can capture the market.

Nevertheless, a business cannot flourish if a good mar-keting strategy is not used. What is valuable to a person might not be valuable to another. Jason also mentioned consumers’ buying behaviors based on mental percep-tion, but not on factual information. This point was illustrated with many real-life examples.

This workshop has reaped excellent responses from its participants. All of them were actively engaged to the study cases and mini activities during the workshop. We hope that participants who have business ideas in mind can be real entrepreneurs in the near future.

M A E GA M E S 2015Sweat glistening on their skin, legs cramping under the bright sun, the athletes were pushing themselves mentally and physically to their limits to come out on top. It was an all-out battle on the 13th of March at SRC.

It was a hot afternoon, and a huge crowd of budding mechanical engineers had gathered in-front of the upper field at the Sports & Recreational Centre eager to experience some serious mechanical stress and prove their resilience. Prof. Lee was invited to say a few words, where he gave a sneak preview of what awaited the athletes at the end of the day. And with that the MAE games was inaugurated with a bang. Following the inauguration, the students made their way to their respective venues. With so many intensive match-ups

occurring at the same time, it was a struggle for the spectators to decide which event to attend. Chinese chess at the activity hall, badminton, squash and table tennis at the indoor stadium and basketball at the courts. It was quite the exciting set of competitions lined up for the day.

Down at the activity hall, the four contestants taking part in Chinese Chess were competing against each other to decide who would be crowned the victor. It was a battle of wits and determination as the players stretched their imagination and strategic thinking skills to the brink. Meanwhile at the indoor courts, badminton, squash and table tennis were already in full swing. The matchup of the experience of the professors against the energy of the younger engineers

was perhaps the highlight of the games. The atmosphere at the basketball courts was electric. None of the teams wanted to suffer defeat and showed their prowess with the ball. But even this competitive spirit did not hinder the athletes from having a great time. Sportsmanship could be seen all around, even those who weren’t able to win, could be seen having an enjoyable time.

The showdown of the MAE Games was much more intense than any other games of the day. The atmosphere was filled with tension and the will to win, as the teams prepared for the finale tug of war. The students, professors and staffs were determined not to budge an inch and were all set to go for glory. It was quite an enjoyable day, and with everyone thoroughly exhausted, it was time for the day to come to an end.

The Chairperson of the School of MAE, Prof. Louis Phee gave out the medals to the champions of each sport and with that, the MAE Games drew to a close.
