INDUSTRYSOLUTIONS INDUSTRYSOLUTIONS

Decorative healthcare lighting? The termwould have been an oxymoron just a few

years ago. But with more facilities adoptingwarmer, more inviting design cues, lighting forhealthcare facilities has gone from institution-al to appealing and even (gasp!) beautiful.

No matter where it is located, decorativelighting for healthcare applications must takeseveral requirements into account:

• It must be efficient. • It must be easy to maintain. • It must deliver adequate illumination for both staff and patients. • It must be comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. And for many projects, it must offer some

sustainability benefits.“Taken together, these requirements are not

always easy to achieve,” admits Doug Schae-fer, director of development at Wisconsin-based Manning Lighting. “But our new prod-uct line, the ambia collection, is a great fit forhealthcare facilities.”

The ambia collection combines provenlighting packages with dynamic new diffusersto create unique yet effective lighting solu-tions. Manning Lighting has partnered with3Form and Lumicor, leading-edge manufac-turers of high-performance resins, to createthese new products.

Both companies have patented processes toencapsulate various materials into layers oftranslucent resins. The choices range frompeaceful botanicals to lush fabrics to boldgraphic patterns. “Instead of simply buyingstandard, off-the-shelf resin material, we

worked withthe manufac-turers directlyto create exclu-sive diffusersdesigned to ourspecifications,”said Schaefer.“We include aninternal diffu-sion layer tominimize lamp imaging on the lens that alsoprovides a soft, pleasing quality of light forhealthcare environments.”

Six distinct product families make up theambia collection, offering a variety of pendant, sconce and ceiling-mount products in differ-ent sizes. All 60 products are designed toshowcase these dynamic materials. “The rangeof textiles – organic elements like leaves andgrasses, graphics and colors – is phenomenal,”according to Schaefer. “We’ve had fun withonly the twelve standard options we offer, butthere are thousands more available. We can’twait to see what our customers come up with.”

Proper lensing of the fixtures is also an impor-tant consideration. Many ambia products incor-porate top, bottom and side lenses to block adirect view of the lamps inside — an importantconsideration from a patient’s-eye point of view.

Though many of the diffusers appear deli-cate, they are incredibly durable — up to 40times the impact strength of glass — and areeasily maintained with common householdcleaners. Easy relamping is also addressed withhinged louvers and removable lenses.

Insufficient orpoor lighting hasbeen shown toaffect patient recov-ery time and gener-al well-being. Allambia productsinclude incandes-cent lamps, com-pact fluorescents ora mixture of both to

provide a range of options for specifiers. Com-pact fluorescent lamps in particular are fea-tured in ambia products due to their efficiency(they typically use one-fourth to one-fifth theenergy of an incandescent lamp to provide thesame light output) and long lamp life (up to20,000 hours depending on lamp type). Theyalso are available with good color renderingand warmer color temperatures than in thepast.

Emergency lighting in the event of a powerinterruption is also a significant concern inhealthcare environments. But many emergencylighting products compromise aesthetics tolocate an emergency lamp or battery. Ambiapendants offer an integral emergency option sono remote mounting is necessary. And ambiasconces include an optional emergency batterymounted behind the fixture in the wall cavity,so the emergency sconces in a corridor appearidentical to the nonemergency units.

Ambia products also have significant greenbenefits in addition to the energy efficiency. Thelens material is nontoxic and contains up to 40percent reclaimed material. Aluminum materialis used extensively in each fixture, includingreflectors and internal components that contain93% post-consumer recycled content.

Apparently, judges at the recent HealthcareFacilities Symposium & Expo, held Oct. 2-7in Chicago, agree. The ambia collection wontwo product awards: Best in Show and MostInnovative.
