RIVER STOUR TRUST

Saturday 12th May saw the official opening of the River Stour Trust’s restored lock at Stratford St Mary by our Vice President Griff Rhys-Jones, Mark Harling of our major funder, Enovert, and Mrs Mary Harrison, the widow of Tony Harrison, whose legacy funded the new lock gates. We were delighted to welcome guests including James Cartlidge MP and John Flack MEP, council representatives from Essex, Babergh, Colchester, Langham, Dedham and Stratford, and the Inland Waterways Association to join our members in celebration. Our guests were taken on the newly accessible stretch of river in our electric launches, joining the flotilla of private boats. Apart from the lock gates which were made and installed by Hargreaves of Halifax, the restoration was done entirely by volunteers, who put in 15,000 man-hours of work on site over a period of 12 years. In recognition of his work on the project, the RST have re-named the lock Roger Brown Lock. Roger lives in Boxted.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS Ian Sutherland would like to advise all his friends that from the 1st July 2018 his new address will be: 106 Hughenden Gardens Village,

Hughenden Boulevard, High Wycombe

It's a new season for the 100 club on 1st September. Thank you to everyone that has supported the LCC over the last year. The first draw of the season and new year is on Friday, 28th September at 11.30. Tickets are available for £26 which entitles you to entry in 12 draws throughout the year. If you (or your club) would like to support our village community centre by buying a ticket, please contact: Sue Armstrong (01206 271127).

PATCHWORK PALS

Patchwork Pals has been in existence at the Langham C.C. for over 15 years. Pat Ward retired this year from running the club, members are extremely appreciative of her work during that time. We are currently looking for new members to join our group, whether you have experience in patchworking and quilting, or just enjoy sewing. Our members have a range of skills and can offer support whether you are a beginner or more experienced and would just like to be within a friendly and supportive group. Our meetings are every third Wednesday in the main hall of the Community Centre. From July times will be 10.00am to 2.30pm Contacts: Pam King 271079 Cynthia Ward 855207

BOXTED HISTORY GROUP

April’s meeting was preceded by the A.G.M. when the officers and committee members were all re-elected. This was followed by an illustrated talk by Paula Short on ‘Her Memories of Peru’. As the River Stour Trust is celebrating a festival of events throughout 2018 it was appropriate to have a talk from the Trust’s Treasurer Sue Brown, which outlined its history and its work.

LANGHAM LADIES

On Thursday 14th June the members

were given an enthusiastic talk by Leisa Nixon on how she achieves her attractive pictures and beautiful jewellery from fused glass. We were show how she constructed the pictures and told the temperatures she required to fire each piece. A face mask and goggles are required in some cases as some of the material used was as fine a icing sugar. Her various materials and final objects were passed around members for all to admire. Several members took advantage to purchase beautiful jewellery from her extensive selection. Our next meeting will be held a week earlier than usual on the 5

th July at

8.00 p.m. at Langham Community Centre when Alison Bradshaw and Jayne Lawson will be demonstrating how to do Flower Arrangements on a Budget. We also have a Barn Dance organised for members and guests on 7

th July and

a Garden Party on Sunday 12th August

to celebrate our 1st Birthday - both to be

held at Langham Lodge.

ARMISTICE CENTENARY: WORLD WAR ONE

Sunday 11 November 2018, Remembrance Day, is the centenary of the Armistice of 1918. This will be commemorated nationwide, with a series of major events taking place. Langham Parish Council is co-ordinating the village’s contribution to the centenary and would like to hear from those Langham groups, organisations and businesses that would like to participate on 11 November. In particular we should like to hear from those residents who have ancestors that served or lived through the war. It is contributing to the national commemoration by a Service of Remembrance, a peal of bells from St. Mary’s Church and the lighting of a beacon which will be erected on the recreation ground, followed by the sounding of the Last Post. It is hoped to show a film in the afternoon in keeping with the occa-sion. Donations and pledges of donations will be gratefully received. For further information please contact:

Cllr. Peter Dawson, Parish Council Chairman on 01206 272605,

e-mail [email protected]

or Cllr. Tony Ellis on

01206 231164, e-mail [email protected]

We trust that as many as possible can take part on Remembrance Day. Further details will be distributed in September.
